We begin this episode by discussing the news that Rafael Nadal has opted not to defend his US Open title due to health risks before moving on to re-live the 2004 Olympics in Athens. It was a Games which saw Justine Henin-Hardenne win gold, Roger Federer stunned by Tomas Berdych, and double gold for Chile as Nicolas Massu won singles and doubles, alongside Fernando Gonzalez. We hear from both men at length about their magical week together and what it meant to their country. The men’s singles silver medallist, Mardy Fish, also opens up about the heartbreak of missing out on gold, what he was feeling while standing on the podium with silver, and why the scar tissue from that experience meant he never played again at the Olympics. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. In this episode of the podcast I am rejoined by Mert Ertunga as we do a time travel episode and try to review Wimbledon 2006 men's edition in a retro live manner. The championships made the Fedal rivalry official as Nadal had won 6 of the 7 matches against Federer coming into this Wimbledon final. The match had lot of significance for Federer as he defended his prefered turf against his arch rival. Mert Ertunga weighs in on the important aspects of this match from each set. This also happened to be Andre Agassi's last championships. We discuss his Wimbledon career in depth and where does he rank with some of the modern greats of the game. Last but not the least the tour is seeing some new talent on the rise in the form of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Marcos Baghdatis and Tomas Berdych. Along with the already established players like Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt the tour is getting deeper in talent.

Catherine, David and Matt return with another episode of Tennis Re-Lived, this time looking back on a couple of classic finals and storylines from Madrid. In 2012, the clay turned blue, and Janko Tipsarevic explains what it was really like to play on, who it favoured, how it affected Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, why it was ditched, and the reason it was slippery.Plus, in what way was the final a microcosm of Tomas Berdych’s career? And how did Federer find his feet when others struggled? The 2014 women’s final between Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep turned out to be a prelude of the Roland Garros final that year, serving as an indication of Sharapova’s progress on clay. What was behind her mid-career transformation on the surface? Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the three best male players of all time, but they haven’t always been so great...In the final episode of our ‘worst of’ series (for now), we reflect on those rare moments when they struggled on court, including their respective slumps in 2013, 2015 and 2017.Plus, what happened to Federer at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics? How did he lose to Guillermo Cañas in back-to-back tournaments in 2007? Why did Nadal’s Wimbledon results go downhill from 2012 onwards? How much does it matter that he’s never won the ATP Finals? Why did Djokovic retire from so many matches early in his career? And what on earth was going on with his serve under Todd Martin? The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, featuring Matt Roberts. As the year draws to a close and the players either put their feet up somewhere warm and sunny or get back into the lung-busting job of pre-season training blocks, this week we start to look back on the story of 2018 by hearing again some of our favourite interviews from the first half of the season, from the American hard courts of the tennis mecca that is Indian Wells through to the sun-burnt clay and imperial majesty of Rome. We start in Indian Wells where Sascha Zverev was bidding to follow on from his breakthrough year in 2017. Key to building the Zverev game has been building the Zverev body and the responsibility for that job has fallen squarely on the shoulders of Jez Green. Formerly conditioning coach for Tomas Berdych and more recently Andy Murray, Green spoke with Jill Craybas at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and shared some of the secrets to his success. We then we move to Miami and another man off and running quicker than ever before in 2018 was Britain's Kyle Edmund, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open and already making huge strides under a new head coach, Freddie Rosengren. Always ready and available to share his thoughts, Freddie spoke with Seb Lauzier in the players' garden in Miami about Kyle's rapid rise. Moving to Europe and on the clay courts of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters we heard from Boris Becker, before moving to Madrid and a look at tennis in Spain with a legend of that country, Emilio Sanchez. Finally to Rome where along the way there had been plenty for Italian tennis to cheer about, Fabio Fognini rising to the occasion and good wins for Marco Cecchinato and Matteo Berrettini, all of which left the country's Davis Cup captain Corrado Berrazutti in a good mood when he spoke to us alongside the magnificent Pietrangeli court. And remember, these interviews and many more are also available on our 'Exclusives' channel on TuneIn - https://bit.ly/2CNeiz1

Davis Cup – Will the new changes signal the death of the event? Two-time winner Tomas Berdych believes so – It’s the world’s largest annual international team competition in sport. This weekend, The Davis Cup final is taking place in Lille between France and Croatia - it will be played for the final time in its current format in its 118 year history. So why is it changing? ITF president David Haggerty explains to Caroline Barker exactly why and how they aim to keep the Davis Cup the crown jewel of the ITF. Alena Grabowski is an Assistant Professor in INTEGRATIVE PHYSIOLOGY at the University of Colorado-Boulder. In 2008, her research helped counteract a study accepted by the International Association of Athletics’ Federations, the IAAF, which would’ve prevented Oscar Pistorius from stepping on the start line at the London Games in 2012. Ten years on, she continues to work to challenge the sport’s governing body and to establish a level playing field, as we’ve been finding out. The Formula 3 driver Sophia Florsch needed an 11-hour operation on the fractured spine after she survived her high-speed crash at the Macau Grand Prix. This week, Caroline speaks to Paul Trafford who is the doctor of the British Tour Championship who was in Macau and we ask him, what more can be done to prevent crashes like this in Motorsport? He was made for the big occasions – Didier Drogba is a two-time African Footballer of the Year, he’s won four Premier League titles at Chelsea and was also the key protagonist in their historic Champions League victory in 2012. The 40 year old has called time on his playing career and this week, he reflected on his career with Caroline and gave us an insight into what he may be doing in the future. On Saturday, it’s the second leg of the final of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s version of the Champions League. Involving Argentina’s two biggest clubs….River Plate v Boca Juniors. The first leg finished 2-all. We hear from two brothers, one supports River Plate and the other Boca. Picture - France winning the 2017 Davis Cup champions (Credit - Getty Images)
All of the four quarterfinals played on Wednesday were won in straight sets, but each had its own story, and the resulting semifinals are mouth-watering, according to the Tennis Podcast team. Hyeon Chung is one of the stories of the tournament and he backed up his straight sets win over Novak Djokovic by overcoming a very difference challenge - being the favourite to win against the World No. 97, Tennys Sandgren. It made Chung the first Korean ever to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament and put him into a semifinal against Roger Federer. Sandgren continued to create headlines of his own because of his social media activity, and responded with a statement in his post-match press conference. What sort of challenge do the Tennis Podcast team think Chung can pose to Federer? Catherine Whitaker and David Law weigh up whether the similarities of his strengths to those of Djokovic might be a factor.Federer saved set points against Tomas Berdych and has yet to drop a set, but how well is he actually playing? In the women’s quarterfinals, classics were hoped for but didn’t materialise, partially because of the brilliance of Angelique Kerber and Simon Halep, partly because of erratic displays from Madison Keys and Karolina Pliskova. Surely Kerber vs. Halep is going to deliver?Meanwhile, Kyle Edmund prepares for the biggest match of his career in the semifinals against Marin Cilic. It will be live on Eurosport and BBC Radio 5 Live from 8am UK time. A Tennis Podcast will follow the match, presented by Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) and David Law (BBC 5 Live), in association with Telegraph Sport and Eurosport. Novak Djokovic found himself ‘playing in front of a mirror’ according to The Tennis Podcast team, as he was knocked out of the Australian Open by Hyeon Chung at the fourth round stage.Chung out-Djokovic’d Djokovic, pounding whiplash groundstrokes, hitting lines, reaching seemingly irretrievable balls in a blur of speed, and doing the splits when forced out wide. After winning 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 Chung was given a standing ovation inside the Rod Laver Arena. On the podcast, concern turned to the health of Djokovic, who admitted he was in a bad way with his elbow, and that he was back to the drawing board.Elsewhere, World No.96 Tennys Sandgren defeated Dominic Thiem in 5 sets, and will now meet Chung in the quarters. Is that clash, between the World No’s 97 and 54 one of the most unlikely last eight clashes ever? In the other quarterfinal in the bottom half of the draw, Roger Federer will take on Tomas Berdych for a 26th time. Federer leads the head-to-head 19-6, winning their last eight clashes. Can Berdych to turn it around? In the women’s draw, Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys will face off in a blockbuster quarterfinal. What kind of impact will this have on the rest of the WTA season, all of which will take place on the hardcourts which Vika has dominated? Also, how is this rest of the season shaping up narrativewise without any calendar slam intrigue? Then we take a number, and Courtney plugs in while Ben switches off. In their respective press rooms in Halle and Birmingham, which are full of fun sudden ambient noises, Ben and Courtney discuss the start of the grass season. And lastly what is making Tomas Berdych such a phenomenal tweeter? All this and more in a short-but-sweet episode, because Mikhail Youzhny had to do a press conference, or something.
