The late Syd Mead was a visual futurist who was hired to imagine the worlds of Blade Runner, Tron, Aliens, Elysium and other sci-fi films. His work in Hollywood has been lauded for decades, but there's a new exhibit in New York that shows a different side of the artist. Syd Mead: Future Pastime is a collection of his personal and commercial paintings, which are all works of science fiction. Despite his connection to the dystopian world of Blade Runner, Mead's personal vision of the future was unwaveringly optimistic. I talk with Mead's husband and business partner Roger Servick, and the curators of the exhibit, Elon Solo and William Corman, about Mead's predictions for the future of technology, sexuality and spirituality. Dave's pick this week is the family comedy sci-fi adventure, Short Circuit from 1986. Short Circuit was a collaborative effort that blended innovative special effects with a light-hearted, family-friendly narrative. Directed by John Badham, the film tells the story of a military robot, Number 5, who gains sentience after being struck by lightning. The production was notable for its advanced use of robotics and puppetry to bring the character of Number 5 to life. Special effects supervisor Syd Mead, who had previously worked on films like "Blade Runner" and "Tron," was instrumental in designing the robot, creating a character that was both mechanically believable and endearing. The use of practical effects and on-set puppetry, operated by a team of puppeteers, gave Number 5 a lifelike presence that CGI could not have achieved at the time. Filming took place in various locations around Oregon, including Astoria and the Columbia River Gorge, which provided picturesque and diverse backdrops for the movie's action and comedic sequences. The cast, featuring Ally Sheedy as Stephanie Speck and Steve Guttenberg as Newton Crosby, brought warmth and humor to the story, further enhanced by the chemistry between the human characters and the robotic protagonist. The production faced challenges, such as ensuring the robot's functionality and coordinating complex scenes involving the animatronics, but the crew's dedication paid off. "Short Circuit" was well-received upon its release, praised for its charming story, groundbreaking special effects, and the memorable character of Number 5, which quickly became a cultural icon of the 1980s. Escaping from the military facility, Number 5 finds refuge with Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy), an animal-loving young woman who initially mistakes him for an alien. As Stephanie helps Number 5 understand the world and the concept of life, they form a bond, while the robot's creators, including Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), and the military, led by the determined Captain Skroeder, are on a relentless quest to retrieve him. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

TCW Podcast Episode 204 - Exploring the Mass Effect   In part one of a two-part exploration of the original Mass Effect trilogy, the game emerges as a synthesis of diverse influences from literary books, video games, art styles, TV shows, and movies. Drawing heavily from Bablyon 5 and the TV series 24, the main framework of Mass Effect reflects a blend of narrative inspirations. The art style, inspired by luminaries such as architect Santiago Calatrava, futurist Syd Mead, and John Harris, contributes to the game's visually captivating universe. The initial year of development was dedicated to crafting a compelling hard sci-fi universe. A key goal was to imbue the game with cinematic qualities and broaden its audience appeal, challenging the conventions of RPGs at the time. The innovative use of a dialog wheel, featuring concise words to convey dialog choices, coupled with full voice acting for both player characters and the main protagonist, marked significant strides in the gaming landscape.   KOTR in 3 Minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTCSPo7ZuSE SCTV YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFb0L4MQziTjEsJKTbFgm8Q The Wild Life - Rick Moranis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mM9qvLYeI8 Rick Moranis - SNL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzeyvaj1FiM "The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3": https://me3finalhours.com/#:~:text=Q%3A%20What%20is%20the%20Final,creative%20process%20behind%20the%20games. In addition to his studies, he was on the rowing team in the bow position.   After two and a half years at Oregon State, Scott transferred to Art Center College of Design, where his father had attended before him. He graduated with honors with a B.S. degree in Transportation Design in April 1990.   The day after graduation, Scott opened a product design consulting firm in San Francisco with friend Neville Page. Soon they were designing a variety of consumer products, the majority being durable medical goods and sporting goods. Clients included Everest-Jennings, Kestrel, Giro Sport Design, Nissan, Volvo, Yamaha, Scott USA, and Schwinn.   In 1995, both Scott and Neville relocated to Vevey, Switzerland to teach drawing and industrial design at Art Center, Europe. Upon the closing of ACE in the middle of 1996 they relocated to Los Angeles. Scott continues to share a studio with Neville where they do consulting work for a wide range of clients. Since returning from Europe, Scott's clients have included BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Raleigh Bicycles, Mattel Toys, Patagonia, 3DO, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Troxel, Rock Shox, Universal Studios, Black Diamond, Angel Studios and Fiat.   In 2002, Scott founded Design Studio Press, a publishing company dedicated to art and design education. DSP's first book, Concept Design 1, released in 2003 and now out of print, is a collection of original artwork by seven of the top concept artists working in Hollywood. All seven artists reunited for Concept Design 2, published in 2006, this time including the work of fourteen guest designers as well. In 2004 Scott art-directed 240 illustrations for Mattel's Hot Wheels AcceleRacers collectible card game and authored How to Draw Cars the Hot Wheels Way for Motor Books Inc.   Furthering the mission of design, drawing, and rendering education, Design Studio Press teamed with The Gnomon Workshop to create a library of 'how to' DVDs. Scott has instructed on nine DVDs, focusing on drawing and rendering techniques for industrial and entertainment designers. He has co-produced an additional 41 DVDs with various top artists, designers, and instructors, including renowned designer Syd Mead.   Scott is married to film editor Melissa Kent and they live in Los Angeles.   ====================================================   ABOUT ME: I am a South African Designer, Digital Modeller and the host of Crown Unfiltered. Greetings and welcome to The I/O Tower: a podcast for all things TRON. I'm your host, David Fleming. Harrison reflects on conceptual artists Syd Mead, Jean "Moebius" Giraud, and Peter Lloyd, and how their combined talent and vision for TRON was both intimidating and exciting. He describes the casting process, and the challenge of conveying the story of TRON to auditioning actors—a challenge not all would overcome. Harrison details many scenes, such as Jeff Bridges' improvised "big door", Flynn's Arcade, Dillinger's helicopter, and Wendy Carlos' iconic soundtrack. And Harrison was crushed that Yori's "love scene" was left out. We close the interview with funny voices on the set of TRON, and Harrison's film about making a film—"Stardumb (Dead Silence)".

In part 3 of my interview with TRON visual effects supervisor Richard Taylor, we jump in with Jeff Bridges, Cindy Morgan and Bruce Boxleitner playing video games, and hear more about Syd Mead's and Moebius's designs and the challenges of creating the first film ever to take place in a computer environment. Richard shares stories from the making of TRON, like when their massive lights blew out the transformers in all of Burbank, CA! He reflects on the Oscars from that year, and why TRON wasn't nominated despite being the first film to feature 20 minutes of full-frame computer-generated imagery. TRON didn't do very well at the box office, but Richard describes how a key marketing opportunity fell through, leaving much of TRON's potential movie-goers in the dark. He compares the computing power required for all of TRON to that for just one frame of TRON: Legacy, and tells us the best way to view TRON today (spoiler alert: it requires that Blu-Ray disc you already have and a giant projector/screen combo that you probably don't). Richard opens up about the stroke he suffered last August, his greatest fear, his renewed admiration for the human mind and life, and how he's recovering and growing creatively. Lastly, he pays tribute to legendary visual futurist Syd Mead, who passed away in December. Read more about Richard and his vast body of work at richardtaylordesign.com. END OF LINE

But for some young shoppers, vintage means... the '90s. KCRW's Tyler Boudreaux reports from ThriftCon.

Today we are so happy to be welcome back Man One! He has been gallivanting all over the world and in particular had an amazing research trip to Asia, spending time in Hong Kong and Tokyo for an upcoming job he is working on with RTI. The trip was so special and inspiring in many ways and we reflect on the highlights and talking points from the experience. The conversation covers cultural exchange and embracing difference, a ton of interesting observations that Man One made around norms and practices, and the art scene in both the major cities he visited. We also get into why the Japanese offer pay per view golf in their hotels, an amazing venue in Tokyo where Man One spent time, and trash trucks that play music on their garbage routes! Man One also reminisces about his time in Osaka in 1999 and painting with design students in the mountains, contrasting that experience with this trip, twenty years later. For all this and then some, be sure to join us on the Not Real Art Podcast, today! Key Points From This Episode: Man One's recent trip to Hong Kong and Japan and what he got up to. The importance of relationships in business and career development. How Man One visited Japan in 1999 to teach graffiti to design students. Pay per view golf in Japanese hotels and the strange reason it even exists. Trash trucks, respect for the blind and how different cultures approach death. The bar that Man One visited in Tokyo and the surprising guest who was there. The Japanese art scene, bombing and the maintenance of the city. On this episode of 70s Trek, we’ll discuss the man who designed V’Ger. Syd Mead was brought in to do one job: That was designing something strange and unusual for the alien craft seen in Star Trek The Motion Picture. What he created was actually the second V’Ger model.  The first was made by Abel and Associates. It didn’t turn out so well...just like so much that was connected with this film.  The model was only four-feet long and looked like a submarine. After Abel and Associates were fired, the new visual effects supervisor, Douglass Trumbull, hired Syd Mead to do a new design.  The resulting model was 68-feet long!  Big enough to show on screen how large and imposing V'Ger was meant to be. His creation looks like it has organic origins, like it was grown, rather than built. Unfortunately, we never get to clearly see the whole model in the theatrical version of the film, only sections up close.
