David is back from holiday to join Catherine and Matt in discussing week one of the Canadian Open, where lots of the big names are out, there has been loads of good matches, and both draws feel pretty open heading into the final few days. Part one - WTA Montreal. We cover Victoria Mboko's special run to the quarter-finals, Coco Gauff's recurring double fault issues, Naomi Osaka's resurgence under new coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, compelling matches involving Madison Keys, Elena Rybakina and Marta Kostyuk, the unorthodox game of Aoi Ito, and the decision to give Eugenie Bouchard a wildcard so she could retire. Part two - ATP Toronto (from 49m). How much meaning can we take from a tournament without Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic? That's the task when assessing the men's event, which has seen Alexei Popyrin mount an impressive title defence so far, Daniil Medvedev continue to slump, and compelling final set tiebreak wins for Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton. There was also a strange complaint from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina leading to sweet spot social media aggro involving Dan Evans. Part three - US Open news (from 70m15s). With most of the US Open mixed doubles pairings having been announced, we quiz David on his views, and he throws a fun name into the ring for one of the remaining wildcards. There's also the launch of the US Open's matchmaker show to discuss. Tickets are on sale now for the Tennis History Conference at Wimbledon on Tuesday 9th December. Jimmy and Brett are back to discuss last weeks Washington results. Alex de Minaur saved 3 championship points to capture his first title of the season in dramatic fashion. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina played great tennis all week beating two top ten players along the way to the final. But could not close the match out losing 3 championship points to the Australian. This isn't the first time this has happen to the Spaniard this year. Sinner, Alcaraz, Djokovic, Draper and Sabalenka all decided to skip the Canadian Masters this week. This draws more attention to the fact of how long the tennis season really is and the demands it puts on the tops players who go deep every week. Scottie Scheffler did it again, won a big golf tournament. This time across the pond at the British Open defeating the rest of the field by at least 4 shots to pick up his 4th major so far. The North American hard court swing is heating up as we head toward the US Open, with the Canada Open in Montreal and Toronto just around the corner. But first, join Joel and Chris at Tennis Weekly HQ as they reflect on all the action this week including Washington, DC — where Leylah Fernandez and Alex de Minaur dazzled their way to titles, leaving their opponents still searching for that elusive trophy. And get the violins out as sadly yes, that does include another heartbreaking loss for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who let championship points slip away once again this season.Emma Raducanu also reclaimed the British No.1 spot with a strong semi-final run, and Venus Williams reminded us of her timeless talent at 45, turning back the clock against Peyton Stearns — a player half her age! Elsewhere, Jannik Sinner made headlines by rehiring his former fitness coach involved in the controversial clostebol case. And in coaching news, it was splitsville for both Naomi Osaka and Stefanos Tsitsipas, parting ways with Patrick Mouratoglou and Goran Ivanišević, one amicably and one not so amicably. A dramatic Monday in Madrid as a power outage across Spain and Portugal cancelled play for the day at the Madrid Open. Join Joel, Kim and Chris at Tennis Weekly HQ as they look back on all the events of the first week where Novak Djokovic lost for the third time in a row leaving us to question (for the umpteenth time) whether he is a serious prospect for another Grand Slam title with the French Open looming. It was also a similar story for defending champion Andrey Rublev who left Madrid with a 1-4 Masters record this year, falling out of the Top 15 for the first time since 2020.It was not all doom and gloom though as Maria Sakkari returned to form of old with a demolition job over Jasmine Paolini whilst Coco Gauff put Sunshine Swing disappointment behind her to set up a tantalising quarterfinal against teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva. The Brits also enjoyed a solid first week with Draper, Fearnley, Norrie all into R3 and Katie Boulter winning her first clay match on the WTA Tour. Emma Raducanu also revealed there is an 'informal agreement' in place with Mark Petchey on her team. And though Carlos Alcaraz wasn't in Madrid due to injury, his new docuseries Carlos Alcaraz: My Way launched on Netflix with the gang discussing what they learned about Carlitos (other than his mum being a really good cook). Patrick talks politics with tennis fan and former Communications Director for the RNC Doug Heye. How does Doug size up the current political climate, and does he see another Biden/Trump matchup in the next Presidential Election?A veteran of politics since 1990, Doug has served in leading communications positions in the House of Representatives and United States Senate, the Republican National Committee, as well as serving in the George W. Bush Administration. Heye most recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, where he garnered on the record bi-partisan praise for his team-building, communications and strategic planning abilities. Upon Heye's arrival in the Capitol in 2012, Roll Call quickly named Heye one of their “Fabulous 50,” noting Heye's ability to “set the tone and frame the debate” as someone “in the room when decisions are made.” In 2010, Heye served as communications director of the Republican National Committee. During these historic elections, Heye excelled in his handling of multiple large-scale public relations crises and pursuing an aggressive media strategy. Upon announcing his departure from the committee, Heye won unanimous, bi-partisan praise for his performance, being called a “pro's pro” in POLITICO by his counterpart at the Democratic National Committee for his handling of what CNN labeled “one of the most demanding jobs in Washington.”Heye is a sought-after commenter on political events and public policy, making more than two hundred appearances on national and international television networks, leading POLITICO to write in 2011, “when the red camera light turns on, Heye doesn't disappoint.” He has written for many publications, including U.S. News & World Report, POLITICO, The Hill and Capitol File magazine. With Madrid well underway, Catherine, David and Matt catch up to discuss everything that's happened so far. There's chat about an impressive win for Maria Sakkari over the improving-but-not-there-yet Paula Badosa, more forehand woes for Coco Gauff, Mayar Sherif becoming the first Egyptian to reach a WTA 1000 quarter-final, and the thrilling run of 15/16 year old Mirra Andreeva to the fourth round. On the men's side, Holger Rune brought the aggro (of course), Dominic Thiem came so close to beating Stefanos Tsitsipas, we all had a fun time watching Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Carlos Alcaraz has ignited after a slow start.
