Mark Petchey kicks off this episode with his analysis of the Laver Cup, where he witnessed Team Europe reclaim the trophy in Berlin. Petchey assesses why the event remains one of the best spectacles on the tennis calendar, how it amplifies the doubles game, and why it's another example of how everything Roger Federer touches turns to gold. The commentator also disscusses the current happenings in the "Asian Swing" section of the season, with Marin Cilic & Jerry Shang claiming trophies, and an enormous combined event with many of the game's stars kicking off in Beijing. And then Magnus Norman, one of the game's premier coaches of the 21st century joins the podcast for conversation about his life in tennis. Norman looks back at his playing career, which saw him reach a major final and #2 in the rankings before it was cut short by injuries. He explains why he chose to become a coach, working with Thomas Johnassen, Robin Soderling and Stan Wawrinka. The Swede recalls Soderling's historic win over Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros, and how he worked with Wawrinka to find that killer instinct that propelled him to three major titles. And Norman reveals why he decided to found the "Good To Great Tennis Academy," the first of it's kind in Sweden.Rounding out the show is Joel Drucker, a prominent writer with decades of experience covering the sport around the globe. Drucker discusses the generational shift at the top of the sport, and why there are always ebbs and flows in the pro game. The writer also examines the state of team events with the Davis & Laver Cups at center stage, and analyzes the pros and cons of mid-match coaching. Drucker is a member of the USTA Northern California Hall of Fame, and on the eve of that honor he professes why writing about tennis is the best job in the world. Hosted by Mitch Michals.

During the Australian Open, ATP Tennis Radio commentator Chris Bowers was fortunate enough to sit down with Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis, who opened up about the mental health issues that he's gone through as a result of time away from the game due to injury and illness. We hear that extended chat and then Chris and fellow commentator, Peter Marcato discuss some of the points raised in the discussion. Later on in the programme we also air a recent feature from the ATP Uncovered show which focussed on Swedish tennis player Robin Soderling's own battles with mental health. The feature, which was which originally was broadcast as part of the ATP and WTA series, Tennis United, gave presenters Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Vasek Pospisil the opportunity to delve further into the subject. Peter and Chris also mention the efforts that the ATP have made to help support players who may be struggling with aspects of mental health, by linking up with both the Sporting Chance organisation and Headspace. With Sporting Chance, players have access to their 24/7 hotline through phone, text or email and following the initial outreach, are referred to Sporting Chance's network of therapists, all experienced at working with elite sportspeople (including the Premier League, the Professional Crickets' Association and the Football Association) who provide virtual appointments for the players. Headspace gives members access to Headspace's Plus subscription. There is no cost for either of these services to ATP members. Finally, this conversation is meant as an open discussion about the various issues surrounding players health and wellbeing, but the views stated in the programme are those of the presenters, who are independent contractors and not necessarily those of the ATP.

As Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem warmed up before the French Open final, the booming voice of an announcer at Court Philippe Chatrier called out each player's bona fides.Nadal's introduction included a year-by-year accounting of every time he'd already won the title at Roland Garros. The crowd responded, initially offering polite applause, then adding their voices, rising into a full-throated roar.Go ahead and 2018 to the lengthy list. Nadal won his record-extending 11th championship at the French Open on Sunday, overcoming a late problem with a finger on his racket-swinging hand and displaying his foe-rattling best for a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 7 seed Thiem, the only person to beat the Spaniard on clay over the past two seasons.Up a break at 2-1 in the third set, Nadal stopped serving after a fault because he couldn't straighten his left middle finger. At the following changeover, Nadal was given a salt pill by a doctor and had his left forearm massaged by a trainer."Tough moment in the third set when I got a little bit cramped on the hand," Nadal said. "I was very scared."Nadal's form never wavered, though, and soon enough he was celebrating his 17th Grand Slam title overall, second among men only to Roger Federer's 20. The two stars have combined to win the past six majors. The victory also allowed the 32-year-old Nadal to hold onto the No. 1 ranking, just ahead of Federer.Nadal called it "not even a dream" to gather 11 titles in Paris, saying it was "impossible to think of something like this."Thiem, a 24-year-old from Austria, was appearing in a major final for the first time. Not much more of a daunting task than doing so against this particular opponent at the French Open, where Nadal is now 11-0 in finals and 86-2 overall. The only losses came against Robin Soderling in the fourth round in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals in 2015."What you did and what you are doing," Thiem told Nadal during the trophy ceremony, "is one of the most outstanding things that any athlete is doing in any sport."If there were any reason for a bit of intrigue entering Sunday's match, it was this: Thiem beat Nadal in two sets on red clay at Rome in May 2017 and again at Madrid last month."I am sure you will win here in the next couple of years," Nadal told Thiem afterward.Nadal is so dominant and so impervious on clay, in general, and at this tournament, especially, it made sense for Thiem to go for broke as much as possible, accepting that there would be risks along with the rewards. If standard play would likely lead to a loss, why not try for the spectacular, instead? So that's what Thiem tried. He pounded huge serves, topping 135 mph (220 kph) — about 25 mph (40 kph) more than Nadal's fastest — and that translated into seven aces, but also five double-faults. He attempted drop shots; some worked, some didn't. And he took the biggest of big cuts on his groundstrokes, his feet leaving the ground as he threw his whole body into them, as if the very outcome of the match — not any individual point, but the whole shebang — depended on the strength of that one whip of his white racket. That led to 34 winners (eight more than Nadal), but also 42 unforced errors (18 more than Nadal). It worked. For a bit.Thiem stayed with Nadal in the early going on a cloudy and steamy afternoon; the temperature was 77 degrees (24 Celsius), the humidity approached 70 percent. Midway through the opening set, Nadal's aqua T-shirt was so soaked with sweat it stuck to him, so he changed into a fresh one at a changeover, drawing catcalls from spectators. From 4-all, 15-all in the opening set, Thiem faltered. After Nadal held there for 5-4, Thiem basically handed over the next game — and the set — by making four mistakes in a row. A volley into the net. A forehand wide. A forehand into the net. A forehand long. Just like that, Nadal was off on a five-game run that put him up 3-0 in the second set.Soon, Nadal was f...

Rafael Nadal won his 36th consecutive set of clay court tennis, dropping an average of two games per set, to claim his 11th Monte Carlo title. Afterwards, the Tennis Podcast team found themselves asking who can stop him on the surface, and how?Presenter David Law was joined by Telegraph Sport tennis correspondent Simon Briggs to work their way through the potential candidates to ‘do a Robin Soderling’ - who beat Nadal at the French Open in 2009 - and how. Is it an in-form Juan Martin Del Potro? Could Novak Djokovic return to exert his former hold over the clay court master? Maybe big John Isner? Or is it simply impossible if Nadal is fit and at his best? They also wonder whether underarm serving might be a legitimate tactic to use against Nadal, given that he operates so far back behind his baseline. The Fed Cup weekend results are discussed - Great Britain’s narrow, heartbreaking defeat to Japan, and the wins for Czech Republic and the United States to reach the final. Was there anything that the British team or captain could/should have done differently? Briggs was in Miami when the controversy over Caroline Wozniacki’s treatment by the crowd erupted, and he gives his view about the reaction of the tournament, and also tells us the story of Rob Fahey and Camden Riviere, the ‘Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal of Real Tennis’, who will face off at The Queen’s Club this week. The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments, in association with Telegraph Sport and Eurosport, and presented by Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) and David Law (BBC 5 Live, BT Sport). Ashley Giles was an England cricketer playing on the biggest stage of all, contesting an Ashes series in Australia, when the call came from home. His wife, Stine, had been diagnosed with a brain tumour – the size of a cricket ball. A decade ago she had surgery to remove it, and then -- later -- further treatment when a second tumour was discovered. Now, Ashley and Stine have founded the Giles Trust to help the next person that finds them self in the same situation. Dallas with Balls The new BBC drama The Rack Pack recalls a time when Britain was Snooker Loopy. How the brilliant but dull Steve Davis and the mercurial but flawed Alex Higgins took the sport to the top of television ratings. Steve Davis and his then manager, Barry Hearn, recall the 1980s heyday captured in the film, along with Steve Davis and Barry Hearn, actors Will Merrick and Kevin Bishop. Racing the Clock British sprinter Charles Eugster breaking records at 95, ‘The Golden Bolt’ doing likewise in Japan at the age of 105 ... veteran athletes are capturing the imagination as never before. Whatever happened to taking it easy? 88-year-old Betty Jean McHugh tells us that’s not an option. Since her first marathon at 55, she’s run another 20+ and broken multiple age-group world records. When she started, she’d train in the dark so people wouldn’t point and stare at an old lady out running. Why it’s Family Fortunes, not Family Feuds The Borlees are runners - Dad and Coach Jacques, identical twins Jonathon and Kevin, little brother Dylan and big sister Olivia. After three of them qualified for the Beijing Olympics, and two for London 2012, they're aiming for all four siblings to be on the plane to Rio. The three brothers join us from their training base in South Africa to talk Rio, family and what it's like having your Dad tell you what to do every day. Why world beaters can’t beat the Fever With the Australian Open nearing the end of its first week, this must be a strange time for Robin Soderling. It's the first Grand Slam event since his retirement last month. Once the fourth best player in the world, Glandular Fever had prevented him from playing a match since 2011. One person who wasn't surprised at all by Soderling's decision was Kate Grey. A year out from London 2012, the Paralympic swimmer was World Number One and favourite for gold. But, by the time the Games came around, she'd already been forced into retirement. Kate describes how coaches just thought she was tired, and then how her hair started to fall out and how she took so many antibiotics she became immune to their effects. Arthur who? When 1009 not-out was scored this month by a Mumbai schoolboy, the cricketing world compared him to Sachin Tendulkar and predicted a bright future. But what about the man whose record he broke? English schoolboy Arthur Collins, with his scored of 628, had held the world record for more than hundred years. Arthur's name was mentioned in this month's stories .. but that's about all. Four glorious afternoons of batting promised so much, but Arthur was weighed down by all the expectation. He joined the army and played for his regiment before, like so many, losing his life in the First World War.
