In the current environment where consumers consider cutting back subscriptions, Bob Lang looks at Spotify (SPOT) which is down after earnings. The audio streaming giant's CEO said "The short term may bring some noise, but we remain confident in the long-term story." For Sofi (SOFI), Bob calls it a "lights out quarter" and says this is a company to watch as student-loans start to come back into the limelight after the Trump Admin. says collections will resume next month.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
Bob Lang considers last quarter to be the "kitchen sink" for Boeing (BA), where the company laid out all of its bad news to set the tone for a brighter outlook. He's expecting better numbers in tomorrow's earnings than what Wall Street's bracing for. Dave Wagner believes tariffs and relationships with China will ground the stock from a significant rally. ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC) and Morgan Stanley (MS) kick off big bank earnings on Friday. Bob Lang says the group has ways to go after falling below the 200-Day SMA. He notes signs of a technical bounce but believes a "world of uncertainty" will generate headwinds. Kenneth Leon says "we still like the group" but expects analysts to be conservative and look toward loan growth and reserves as key outlook points.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
"Volatility is a trader's best friend," says Bob Lang, and he believes there's still enough of it for investors to load up their portfolios. Despite the lingering April 2nd tariff deadline, Bob argues its impact won't be as significant as investors think. As for his stock buys, he labels Meta Platforms (META) as the Mag 7 company with the most upside potential due to its advertising strength.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Bob Lang reacts to McDonald's (MCD) mixed earnings. He says the value proposition is still there even as prices have risen, because competitors are “a little more overpriced.” He thinks the McRib promotion late last year was a “disaster,” and they need “fresh items.” He also looks at Tower Semiconductor (TSEM) earnings, noting their streak of earnings beats, but says historically their next quarter is the worst of the year.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Bob Lang breaks down GE Aerospace (GE) earnings. He notes its strong free cash flow, quarterly dividend, and continued share buybacks, saying it means the company is in “great condition”. His “only concern” is spending reductions from the new U.S. administration. On American Airlines (AAL), he's concerned about the cost per average seat mile (CASM) and how the company is managing its spending. However, he expects its demand to stay strong. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. As we approach the end of this short first trading week of 2024, we are back with a fresh AAP podcast episode with Chris Versace, who is joined by Bob Lang. The two discuss the fizzle that was the Santa Claus Rally and explain why it's not a major factor in their investment decision-making process. The conversation shifts to the market action this week and the factors both fundamental and technical driving it. Bob shares the technical support levels for the S&P 500 that he's watching, and notes we have a bevy of Fed heads coming that could throw some cold water on market rate cut expectations. Chris reviews this week's data, explaining why it supports the Fed not rushing to cut rates, and how one item adds another reason to be concerned about earnings guidance when the 4Q 2023 earning season gets underway. As the two discuss, that season begins with bank earnings late next week, with results from Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), JPMorgan (JPM), and Wells Fargo (WFC). We end the conversation talking about the change to the Fed's voting committee, and how that might influence monetary policy compared to last year.
Bob Lang joins us on this week's edition of the AAP Podcast as he chats with Chris Versace about the current state of the stock market, sharing why he sees 2023 closing out on a high note with the upcoming Santa Claus Rally. Moving into 2024 the two talk about the upcoming re-jiggering of Fed voting members, what that could mean for Fed policy, and how upcoming data is viewed. Chris gives a few reasons as to why we're likely to see further progress in the November inflation data, including next week's CPI report, while Bob shares why he saw this week's 3Q 2023 Productivity data as very important. The two discuss the market's expectation for four rate cuts next year and why the market could be getting ahead of itself with that thinking. The two touch on next week's Fed policy meeting and why they will be closely reviewing the Fed's updated economic projections. The conversation then pivots to the holiday shopping season, touching on their boots-on-the-ground observations for Williams Sonoma (WSM), Gap (GPS), Costco (COST), and several other retailers.
Dave Brisbin 11.26.23 My good friend these past eight years, a committed member of our faith community, Bob Lang, died last week. I was at his house the night before with his wife and daughter and again the next day after he had passed. Staying connected to him and his family during his illness, I was very glad that last night to have been able to say in his ear all I wanted him to know, hoping he could hear and understand. He leaves a big hole in my breakfast schedule, the conversations we'd have, and accepting that he's no longer callable will take some time. Moments like these call so much into question, maybe everything that matters to us as fragile humans. What is Bob doing now? Who is he with? Anyone at all? Does he know the answers to all the questions I have, that every human has ever had since we started this whole thing? Most of us are well steeped in religious and cultural doctrine, but moments like these have the power to strip all that away, undistract us, question everything we think we know and lay bare the reality of what we can't. Truth is, there's no certainty about the unseen parts of life. By definition, they are unprovable. Unseen, we can say they don't exist, or we can let what we do see convince us of something more. Fear makes us crave certainty, but certainty is only mind deep; conviction goes all the way to the bone. We choose our convictions out of the experience of our lives—not as a certainty, but as the basis of how we live. Now. Not then. All we have is now. All Bob has is now. I'm convinced it's the same now, shared, at different frequencies. Moments like these have convinced me that choosing to live based on love is to feel love's eternal quality. That we come from love and return to it, that we as part of love are never lost, just change form. Like energy and matter, we remain constant while constantly changing. I'm convinced that Bob is not lost, just unseen to me. We often say that the dead are still present and alive in our hearts, but I'm becoming convinced that our hearts, tuned to the frequency of presence, can make us aware of unseen life in our one, shared now…moments like these.

We are back with a new AAP Podcast with lead portfolio manager Chris Versace joined by Bob Lang. It's been a bit since our last podcast with Helene Meisler, and some is catching up to do, but as that is done the conversation quickly shifts gears to the market, the Fed, and the data driving it all. Bob comes out swinging, aiming the Fed's updated economic projections for being too conservative, especially given the economic data that led the Atlanta Fed's GDP Model to up its outlook for the September quarter. That gives way to discussing inflation and wage pressures, something the team is watching closely, as well as the hotter-than-expected September Producer Price Index. The two discuss their concern the market may be too complacent when it comes to the aggregate data of late. It may give rise to yet another market re-think on what the Fed needs to do, and this could come in two different forms. The conversation ends by discussing market seasonality, which Bob sees as being favorable between mid-October and the Thanksgiving holidays, and the September quarter earnings. While discussing recently revised guidance from airline stocks, Levi Strauss (LEVI), and disappointing quarterly results from LVMH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton (LVMHF), we also explain why, as an investor, it's important to know what you own.
On this week's AAP Podcast, Chris Versace is joined by AAP team member Bob Lang and the two tackle the Fitch downgrade this week for the US's credit rating that roiled stocks just as we enter a seasonally weak time for the market. Bob puts some context around Fitch's downgrade comparing it to the last rating downgrade in 2011. With the S&P 500 breaking its 20-day moving average, the next level of support to watch is the 50-day moving average, which comes in near 4,350 for the S&P 500. Bob also tells listeners to watch for the market becoming oversold, something that has him watching the market oscillators. The conversation between the two then pivots to the June quarter earnings season, which so far has gone pretty well. However, as yet we haven't seen any material upward revisions for S&P 500 EPS in the back half of 2023 or 2024. Chris shares why he thinks this is important to gauge how much steam is left in the market, and by the end of this week, ~80% of the S&P 500 basket will have reported. Chris and Bob round out the conversation by discussing the recent rise in the 10-year Treasury yield back above 4%, and if that turns out to be a sustained move how it could be a headwind for stocks. The end discussing the Teamsters-UPS (UPS) contract and what it could mean for Ford (F), General Motors (GM), and Stellantis (STLA) just as the UAW shares it is looking for double-digit pay rises and defined-benefit pensions for all workers.

On this post-Independence Day edition of the AAP Podcast, Chris Versace is joined by Bob Lang to discuss the Fed's latest policy meeting minutes, the consumer and the housing market, membership business models, and the year-end holiday shopping season. Bob shares that he agrees with AAP team member Carley Garner that we could see the S&P 500 reach 4,500-4,520 if not a tad higher, and that he sees strong technical support at 4,400 and again at 4,350 and 4,335. The two also discuss why Bob is closely watching the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) and why, at least for now, it suggests wide swings in the market are likely to be kept to a minimum. We also talk about signals in the VIX that would point to wider market swings ahead. Bob and Chris discuss Netflix (NFLX), Amazon (AMZN), and Costco (COST) as well as Coty (COTY) and Morgan Stanley (MS) during their time together as well as which economic data point each of them will be watching in the coming days. Editor's note: Please be aware a short gap of silence occurs once during the conversation when the signal briefly cuts out.

In this week's AAP Podcast, lead portfolio manager Chris Versace is joined by AAP team member Bob Lang to discuss the Fed's March monetary policy statement and comments made during Fed Chair Powell's corresponding press conference. In a prior note to members, we shared our initial reactions to the policy statement and updated economic projections, but as we learned during the presser, the Fed does not see any rate cuts ahead in 2023. As we've been sharing that disrupts the current market narrative depicted in the CME FedWatch Tool, and those comments led the market to turn down. Moreover, depending on the impact of tighter credit conditions, the Fed could do more than telegraphed in its updated economic projections for the fed funds rate. The tighter credit conditions reflect the fallout from recent bank failures, which as Powell said could act as a rate hike to the fed funds rate. However, because we are still in the early days of those tighter credit conditions, the full impact will take more time to understand. This means the market didn't receive a definitive answer as to when we are likely to reach the terminal level for the fed funds rate. It also means we must continue to watch the labor market and upcoming inflation data. Powell confirmed what we've been saying to you, that recent inflation data was running hotter than expected, and based on the updated economic projections both the core PCE and PCE inflation metrics aren't expected to hit 2.5% until the end of 2024. We discuss all of that in much greater detail, and Bob runs through the technical levels he's watching for the S&P 500. We also share the two things that surprised us between the March policy statement, Powell's comments, and the updated economic projections.

On the latest AAP Podcast, portfolio managers Bob Lang and Chris Versace cover quite a bit of ground since the last episode. Out of the gate, the duo discusses the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 2022 holiday shopping forecast and why it could prove to be a bit too optimistic. The portfolio managers will be leaning heavily into quarterly earnings from retailers to check that NRF forecast as well as where retailers stand with inventories. Even before the September quarter earnings season began, Bob and Chris thought consensus S&P 500 EPS expectations would need to come down, and they have started to do just that. Now for those retail earnings and the concern they have is for margins given markdowns and sales to blow through that inventory before reloading for the 2022 holiday shopping season. They see further downward EPS revisions ahead for the S&P 500. Chris shares why he thinks there is more room to go in those downward revisions for 2022 and 2023 even though Goldman Sachs (GS) just slashed its 2023 EPS growth rate for the S&P 500 to zero. Bob takes us through the current divergence in the market and does a quick tutorial on volatility, including why we're likely to see the VIX fall as we approach the end of 2022. He also touches on the mid-term elections, and it being just a few days after the Fed's November meeting that shocked markets, the two share what they expect ahead of the Fed's December monetary policy meeting and the Fed Funds rate. Next up is the September Consumer Price Index, and Bob walks us through the Cleveland Fed's Inflation Nowcasting model. Near the end of the podcast, Bob shares the one thing he'll be focused on this week, and the stock he'll be watching the most in the coming days. Chris does the same, and here's a clue as to what stock he'll be watching – it's the home of the crab chip. But as to why he's focused on that stock, you'll have to listen to this episode of the AAP podcast.

Today's "Try it Tuesday" is a look at Bob Lang's "Woodworker's Guide To Sketchup". A really amazing tutorial covering just about every aspect of Google's Sketchup 3D modeling system that a woodworker would need to create stunning and detailed drawings for their next project. Bob is a great teacher, author and of course woodworker. Bob has taken it upon himself to learn as much about Sketchup as humanly possible, and for the past couple of years has been teaching woodworkers how to get the most from it. "Woodworker's Guide To Sketchup" is a fully interactive eBook that you load onto your computer and can access while using Sketchup on your next project. It's like having Bob sitting next to you while you're designing. And to add to all of this are the multiple built-in videos that highlight the topics discussed throughout and reinforce the lessen. Trust me, if you've ever wanted to learn how to use Sketchup or just dramatically improve what you're already doing with it, this is the book for you! To learn more about it, to download a preview chapter or to checkout some of the embedded videos head over to Bob's website www.craftsmanplans.com.
