Their original intent was simply to release a single to document their recently defunct band, Teen Idles. However, the label has gone on to release music from more than 60 bands, with more than 160 albums over the last 25 years and counting. As musicians Ian and Jeff went on to form Minor Threat, who along with Bad Brains are credited in the early 80s with introducing the D.C. hardcore ethic to an audience well beyond Washington, D.C. In 1986, Ian formed Fugazi with Joe Lally, Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. Over 20+ years the band has released seven albums and toured the world extensively covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between. Fugazi is self managed and maintains a policy of affordable access to their work through low record and ticket prices and all concerts are all-ages. In 2003 Fugazi decided to take an indefinite hiatus from recording and touring as young families and other priorities began to take center stage. Since 2001, Ian has played in The Evens, a duo with Amy Farina. The Evens revel in short-circuiting the conventions of rock music and perform mostly in non-traditional music spaces — libraries, art spaces, schools, theaters, etc. They have released two albums and have toured extensively in North America, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Ian has also been taking on speaking engagements, delivering talks that take the form of informal Question and Answer sessions.

Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

Sam Quartin is an actor, activist, and frontwoman for The Bobby Lees, which she founded after discovering her future bandmates at a music school in upstate New York. The two discuss her recent role in Candy Land, a film about the underground world of truck stop sex workers. Sam tells Rhett about the impact that Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way had on her life, shares her process for boosting self-confidence, and explains why she's opted out of having a digital profile.A band that proves it pays to think young, the Bobby Lees are a frantic garage punk act from Woodstock, New York, whose sound is fast, fresh, energetic, and filled with a snotty sense of fun. Boasting a revved-up attitude and a level of precision that matches the tempos without making them sound stiff, the Bobby Lees made a bracing debut on their 2018 album Beauty Pageant. They got tighter, speedier, and rowdier on 2020's Skin Suit, produced by Jon Spencer, and they developed a more polished but no less powerful approach for their third LP, 2022's Bellevue. Growing up in upstate New York, young Kendall Wind took piano lessons before migrating to bass guitar and leaning into The Rock Academy founded by School of Rock's Paul Greene. Her piano knowledge would later inform her bass and guitar playing in the band she put together at Rock Academy with singer Sam Quartin called The Bobby Lees, now on it's 3rd LP Bellevue out now on Mike Patton's Ipecac Records. She's working with Jon Spencer regularly now who also produced the bands 2nd record before working with Vance Powell on Bellevue. It's been a whiplash ride for Kendall and The Bobby Lees, touring heavily since their inception. Unsurprisingly they were a bit relieved when the pandemic offered them time to make new music and refuel the machine.

Pipeman comments on how he didn't expect the sound he heard from them when he first seen the name of the band, but in the best possible way. The guys joke Bobby Lee might sue them for taking his name. They actually went on his podcast and he was really nice so they're safe. Speaking on social media, the guys say they stay far away from TikTok and would ideally be off social media but they have to these days to promote themselves. Pipeman says he wishes he could just throw all his tech away sometimes cause he remembers before it and it was better. The guys make sure to mention some of the positives of social media, like people discovering their music through their pages and promoted posts which is awesome cause they never have seen them otherwise. Pipeman asks them to describe their music to anyone who hasn't heard of them before. They use two simple words to describe it; really good. Pipeman agrees and adds that it is super high energy. Sam Quartin is the guitarist and vocalist for THE BOBBY LEES. They're one of my favourite bands, rooted in punk, the blues, the garage and a big old dose of weird. Live, they are a tight, ball of wild, nihilistic claustrophobia that comes and finds you and detonates in your face. They're free of inhibitions and straitjackets and this just feeds into the crowd. It's proper rock n roll, respectful of the past but very much for today. They've just announced their new album, Bellevue, to be released on Ipecac Recordings on 7th October 2022. Stick that in your diaries, it's going to be a belter.I'm so grateful to Sam for coming on and so openly sharing her thoughts about her personal journey and the role her mindset has played in her life. We're getting into some of this deep stuff:Clearing out the inner self to get comfortable in our own skinTrusting the journey that we go onDealing with anxiety and overcoming fearsMaking a difference to fansInstinctive creativityStaying with your convictionThe healing peace of nature  Removing inhibitionsI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste
