On this episode we chat with lead singer and songwriter A.L.X. from the NYC-based rock band, Love Crushed Velvet. LVC's music, like New York City, is diverse, edgy and enticing. Carefully crafted songs combine elements of alternative, glam, post punk, new wave, modern & classic rock, and the roster of producers and musicians A.L.X. has worked with is impressive to say the least. After collaborating with drummer Thommy Price (Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Blue Öyster Cult) and acquiring lead guitarist Jimi Bones (Joan Jett, Blondie) and bassist Enzo Penizzotto (Joan Jett), Love Crushed Velvet recorded their debut album at Shabby Road Studios, Kingsland Recording in Brooklyn, NY, and at Brian McGee's NY studio. Mixed by veteran producer and engineer Dave Bascombe, the album was released in 2011. In 2015 the band released both the EP 'Delusions' and the album 'Firefly'. The next few years saw the singles "Other Places", a re-release of "Rise Up" and "It's a Holiday, Come Over" a Christmas song accompanied by a fun animated video. Now, after teasing with singles and cutting-edge videos for the past few years, Love Crushed Velvet has released their latest full-length album, Souls and the Barren Heart. We chat about A.L.X.'s background growing up around NYC, his songwriting process, Nashville, collaborations, the new music and the impressive Virtual Reality videos such as The Light Inside and The Future that have accompanied recent singles. The latest, Saddened Eyes, was just released to coincide with the new album. The band's lineup has varied for live performances but some veteran players include keyboardist Linda Leseman, bassists Drew Mortali & Darren Korb, drummers Aaron A. Brooks & Massimo "Max" Majorana and guitarist and long-time songwriting partner, Jay Stone. A.L.X. has been performing shows in Italy and has toured around Europe as well as the U.S. The band even did a sponsored tour of Australia. Owen Paul is everyone's favourite waste of time. Singer, producer and co-writer of the 1986 pop hit My Favourite Waste of Time, Owen was the overnight sensation who spent years honing his craft and who went on to forge a very successful career in the entertainment business. Since that song topped the charts, he's played a leading role in a major musical theatre production, toured the UK and Europe with Phil Collins as one of Mike and the Mechanics, and was harassed by The Osbournes in the infamous 'noisy neighbours' episode.  But the love the live performance is in his blood and Owen returned to the stage in 2009 as lead vocalist for XSM featuring original Simple Minds members Derek Forbes and Brian McGee and has since released new solo material as well as remixed versions of his unforgettable 80's classic. The tracks featured are: My Favourite Waste of Time (original version), My Favourite Waste of Time (30th anniversary version), Breathe in Breathing Deep (Song for John), and Sleeping on the Same Pillow.  For more information about Owen visit www.TheOwenPaul.com

Commissioner Johnston has previously laid out the foundation for a just society as emanating from the principles of natural law. The value of individual human lives is recognized in natural law as the predicate for a just society and just laws. As America’s Founders said, “To ensure these rights, governments are instituted among men.” In this episode Johnston explains the current climate in the battle of ideas which rages against the idea of a right to life for innocent individuals.  The current climate even rages against the use of natural law principles in creating society’s laws. The greatest, single fountainhead for this antithetical approach to the basis of our laws is best summarized in the philosophy of Hegel.  Hegelian Progressivism, which swept through the academic world of the 19th century, quickly began to fulfill its asserted “destiny” by seizing governments in the 20th century. Essential to Hegelian thought is the pseudo-spiritual idea that history itself gives spiritual purpose and direction to mankind; and specifically the form of government is what enables the human spirit to be fulfilled. This combined spirit of contemporary government with its human participants (or “zeitgeist”) is the essential, animating and spiritual aspect of the Hegelian view of history.   Because Hegel builds on the conflict of ideas - the dialectic - the synthesis of new ideas and forms of government replacing previous ones, the revolutionary idea of constant change and ‘progress’ has become a familiar invocation for social warriors.  Individuals are not held to account for justices are injustices but social groups and classes are either oppressed or oppressors. Elevating the oppressed and suppressing the oppressors becomes the goal of the Hegelian Progressivism. Such thinking in the late 19th and early 20th centuries lead to widespread civil unrest and anarchy, and finally the collapse of Russian government and its Marxism takeover.   Decades later, the identical principles were put into action, but as philosopher Brian McGee puts it, the ultimate goal is simply changed.  Instead of economic justice, German National Socialist sought racial justice. As Magee states, it’s very easy to substitute for ‘X’ as your goal and use the formula for Hegelian thinking to see his government for whatever purpose you may seek.  Within a few years, the competing Hegelian progressive idea of national Socialism focusing on racial superiority emerged in Germany. It was a direct stepchild of the socialist and Hegelian worldview. By its very nature, Hegel‘s philosophy of progress demands changes of government. Everywhere Hegelian progressivism has taken over, millions of lives have been taken. Individual human lives are disposable to the flow of history. Johnston includes direct comments from contemporary philosophers: Peter Singer, the animal rights activist who teaches at Princeton, and public intellectual, BBC commentator, Brian Magee.  Commissioner Johnston points out that the Hegelian notion of progress pushing towards a brave new future and dismissing traditional values has become an inherent part, not only of foreign governments and ideology, but is widely accepted currently in American academia and even by large numbers of American office holders. With significant quotes from Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, the current push to embrace certain new truths and new principles and a new radical form of government, is religiously and spiritually exciting to individuals who otherwise have no spiritual or ethical foundation. Hegel’s compelling, ‘spiritualized’ religious motivation is extremely widespread throughout American culture of the 2020s. Hegelian disciples (even if they never heard his name) practice the routine ‘grouping’ of individuals, by race or class, or any other social structure. Rather than holding individuals responsible, the social conflict of groups is an essential element of Hegel’s dialectical conflict. The American principles of the value and significance of the lives of individuals is dismissed by Hegelian thinkers.  They view humanity as groups - oppressors and oppressed, and injustices as accomplished as only corrected by sweeping social change, and not by holding individuals accountable for their individual actions. Ultimately, The human individual is seen as merely a cog in history. Their purpose and fulfillment is only to be found through the flow of history and righting society’s wrongs. Those who refuse to go with the flow seem to be obstacles to “the changes progress is calling for,” and must be re-educated or removed.   Wherever the Hegelian worldview is embraced, that form of government routinely dismisses the lives of entire classes of human individuals. The right to life of each individual is of little or no significance when it comes to changing mankind’s destiny and affecting the flow of history.  That is the ultimate goal of the Hegelian progressive. While many progressives associate the feelings and quasi-spirituality of Hegelian thinking with freedom, they are often disappointed with the reality that it mandates a belief in a controlling government which is “necessary to bring this inspired “freedom.” Their faith in statism is, in fact, an alarming call for authoritarian change. The vague, pseudo-spiritual appeal of Hegel is akin to the now widespread American syncretism of George Lucas’ Jedi religion, which many Americans now espouse as their personal model. See, “How we all became Jedis“.” (Religious News service December 20, 2019.) Failure to recognize the widespread influence of Hegel and his influence on contemporary society is a failure for those who wish to protect innocent lives. The falsehoods, the pseudo-science, pseudo-religion of Hegelian progressivism must be directly repudiated. As Pope Pius the Tenth wrote in his encyclical on Modernity (1907), progressive ideology seduces and destroys clear thinking, the desire to recognize truth and instead presents a synthetic truth, a synthesis, which misleads and superimposes itself on other human beings.

Plow United is an American punk rock who formed in Wilmington, Delaware in 1992. They played fast punk rock with pop, thrashcore and hardcore influences. Their lyrics are sometimes labeled "emo" postfact. Band members are Brian McGee (vocals and guitar), Sean Rule (drums) and Joel Tannenbaum (bass). In 1996, the band recorded and released their second record ("Goodnight Sellout"), and received attention from major labels. They declined to pursue a career in rock and roll, however, and in 1997 the band broke up at the height of its popularity. In 1998 Creep Records released a posthumous third LP ("Narcolepsy"), a darker take on the band's loose, aggressive pop-punk sound. In 1998, Plow United reformed to play three shows in New York and Pennsylvania to promote the release of "Narcolepsy". They got back together in 2011 to play some shows including Gainesville. Florida’s FEST, and recorded a full length in 2012 called Marching band. Arik from Creep Records said I should reach out to Brian. I did and here’s what we talk about: Their “show” with Busta Rhymes Playing in the High School band having an influence on Plow Who was the main songwriter in the band Throttle Jockey hair on fire story The Bouncing Souls Their time on Creep Records How they have a ton of merch left over Making merch to help save Day Laborers His chance to sing in a little band called Kid Dynamite Square Dancing And a ton more If you're in Carrboro check out his new store  Before we begin, this week’s episode is sponsored by my animation company drive80. This episode is a live recording of Brian McGee's set at The Station in Carrboro, NC on 12/2/17. Brian McGee has always been a little out of step with the times. When his cousins were starting cover bands and selling out college bars in their native Philadelphia, Brian co-founded the legendary East Coast pop-punk band Plow United. When pop-punk was in every mall and Plow United was over, Brian found his way to the mountains of North Carolina, where he became a skilled multi-instrumentalist with a deep knowledge of the darkest corners of American folk music. And by the time every 30-something punk dude and their mom had picked up an acoustic guitar and started singing “This Land is Your Land,” Brian had found his way back up to the East Coast, this time to Asbury Park, New Jersey. With the internet abuzz over Plow United’s 2011 reunion at Riot Fest East and 2013 album, Marching Band, Brian stepped into the studio with the Bouncing Souls’ Pete Steinkopf to record what he suspected might be the best songs of his life. The result was Ruin Creek, his third solo album. A stripped-down affair, Ruin Creek combined punk brevity with rain-streaked folk minimalism. Plow United is currently on hiatus. Brian formed a band in NC called Sneakers Award and they have begun gigging in earnest. This week's cold open is an iTunes review from Brian McGee of Fargo, ND. We loved it so much, we had to open the show with it. The Stanley Cup Final is here! Nashville vs Pittsburgh Game 1 begins in the midsts of this week's podcast with Ryan, Geeta and our black ace Stu Walters of TSN 1040. We gather this week to talk all about the yellow Final of 2017. They give their Stanley Cup predictions and discuss the storylines going into the Final. From Nashville's defence and rock solid goaltending, to those two guys in Pittsburgh with the big numbers who appear to be amazing at hockey. They discuss PK Subban's recent media spotlight, John Scott's comments and share their thoughts on the Montreal/Nashville trade and how and why Montreal made the deal. Maybe PK's personality didn't jive with the Montreal core and dressing room. It appears to be doing great things in Nashville... the same maybe cannot be said for Shea Weber. Finally, the gang discusses the Vancouver Canucks recent signing of Philip Holm out of the IIHF World Championships. He played on the gold medal winning Team Sweden and was the one defensemen without NHL rights. Canucks fans see this as a total win for the team as they're able to land a sought after prospect.
