Backpacker Danielle McLaughlin knew that her mother Andrea worried about her when she was away on her travels, so every day she'd text home to Donegal. Then one day in March 2017 there was no text and Andrea soon learned, from one of Danielle's friends in Buncrana, that her 28-year-old daughter had been murdered in Goa.The friend had seen the news on Facebook and it was up to Andrea to go to her local Garda station to seek help.Last month, Vikat Bhagat, 24 at the time of the killing, was found guilty of the rape and murder of the young Donegal woman. He was handed two life sentences with additional time for concealing evidence. The case took eight years to conclude (Bhagat has 90 days to lodge an appeal) and was before the court more than 250 times.Andrea, her second daughter Jolene McLaughlin-Brannigan and Danielle's best friend, Louise McMenamin, travelled to India for the verdict.Irish Times reporter Kitty Holland travelled to Buncrana to talk to Andrea about her daughter, the slow-moving Indian legal system, the scenes in court as Bhagat was sentenced and what they hope will happen now. They still don't know exactly how Danielle died.Presented by Bernice Harrison. We've already shared the first part of an exploration into Ireland's Night Time Economy, where DJ and Give Us The Night campaigner, Sunil Sharpe gave us a comprehensive overview of the topic. In this episode, the concluding part, Zara Hedderman interviews Mark Davies and Deputy James Lawless.Something discussed in Part One was the importance of a Night Time Economy Advisor - also known as Night Mayers in other parts of the world. As of this year, this role is being piloted in 9 cities across Ireland: in Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Sligo, Buncrana, Galway, Kilkenny, Longford and Drogheda, where Mark Davies is presently working as its first ever Night Time Economy Advisor. Mark spoke to Zara about his previous experiences working with Cardiff County Council and as a DIY musician and describes how they help him effectively navigate his current position. He also explains exactly what's involved in the role of Night Time Economy Advisor - from organising community workshops, finding ways to enrich and elevate independent musicians and venues and much more. Zara also speaks to Deputy James Lawless of Fianna Fail. Deputy Lawless was appointed Chair of the Committee on Justice back in 2020, and a crucial component to reforming Ireland's licensing laws centres on the Sale of Alcohol Bill. In November of 2023, The Joint Committee on Justice published their report on Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Sale of Alcohol Bill, 2022. Deputy Lawless speaks about what's involved with this bill and how it will impact Ireland's Night Time Economy, as well as giving some indications into when we can anticipate this bill to complete its legislative journey and herald a new era of what we hope will be an even more vibrant and inviting foundation to a modernised night time culture in Ireland. Thanks for listening, I hope you've enjoyed these episodes and we'll be back again soon.

"Caighdeán maith nó sárchaighdeán" i mbunáite uiscí snámha. The country's bathing waters are of good or excellent quality, according to a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency. Tá caighdeán maith nó sárchaighdeán i mbunáite uiscí snámha na tíre, de réir tuarascála nua ón nGníomhaireacht um Chaomhnú Comhshaoil. Of 148 swimming waters, it is said, 144 of them have the required basic quality or above, that's 97%. As 148 uisce snámha, a deirtear, tá an bunchaighdeán riachtanach nó os a chionn sin i 144 acu, sin 97 faoin gcéad . In fact, 117 of them are said to be of good or excellent quality, which equates to 79%. Deirtear go deimhin go bhfuil caighdeán maith nó sárchaighdeán i 117 acu, ar cothrom é sin le 79 faoin gcéad . It is the local authorities who decide what constitutes a bathing water spot and these places are regularly monitored from the beginning of the year. Is iad na húdaráis áitiúla a chinneann cad is láthair uisce snámha ann agus déantar monatóireacht rialta ar na háiteanna sin ó cheann ceann na bliana. The EPA claims that the contents of the report show that good management of bathing waters offers high protection to people who benefit from them. Maíonn an GCC go léiríonn a bhfuil sa tuarascáil go dtugann dea-bhainistiú uiscí snámha ardchosaint do dhaoine a bhaineann leas astu. The report indicates that there has been a great improvement over the last few years at Traan Sruthan in Portrichran in the north of County Dublin and at Forbacha Beach in Co. Galway. Tugtar le fios sa tuarascáil go bhfuil feabhas mór tagtha le cúpla bliain ar Thrá an tSrutháin i bPort Reachrann i dtuaisceart Chontae Átha Cliath agus ar Thrá na bhForbacha i gCo na Gaillimhe. On the contrary, however, it is said that the water is of poor quality in three places, that is, the Beach Began in Ballybriggin in the north of County Dublin; Women's Beach in Buncrana, Co Donegal; and Women's Beach in Spidéal, Co Galway. Os a choinne sin, áfach, deirtear go bhfuil droch-chaighdeán san uisce i dtrí áit, mar atá, an Trá Thosaigh i mBaile Brigín i dtuaisceart Chontae Átha Cliath; Trá na mBan i mBun Cranncha, Co Dhún na nGall; agus Trá na mBan sa Spidéal, Co na Gaillimhe. On the contrary again, and fortunately, improvement work is said to be underway or to begin in those three places. Os a choinne sin arís, agus ar an dea-uair, deirtear go bhfuil obair fheabhsúcháin ar bun nó le tosú sna trí áit sin. Runoff from homes and farms, dog fouling and algal blooms were the biggest contributors to bathing water pollution last year, says the EPA. Eisilidh ó thithe agus ó fheirmeacha, salú ag madraí agus blás algach ba mhó ba shiocair le truailliú uiscí snámha anuraidh, a deir an GCC. The swimming season officially starts in Ireland on June 1st and ends on September 15th. Tosaíonn an séasúr snámha go hoifigiúil in Éirinn ar an 1 Meitheamh agus críochnaíonn sé ar an 15 Meán Fómhair. RTÉ News and Current Affairs Nuacht agus Cúrsaí Reatha RTÉ

It's the story of a “useless girl who lived happily ever after.”  In this version, Marisa imagines the scene in which the father, John Joe, tells the story to his daughter Annie. We call together these threads in our conversation: - The process of weaving itself and the modern attempts to bring back lost arts - What it means to be "useful" or "useless" - How we celebrate the time it takes to make something by hand now, but how this tedious work was a burden to women in the past - How to escape the projections of others; the only evil in this story are other people's expectations - A story with an ambiguous ending in which the not-so-virtuous heroine was victorious  - The way that modern, high-achieving women are troubled by similar outdated belief systems as are presented in the story - The power of “the stool” which appears repeatedly in the story: how to allow yourself to pause, and make a conscious decision from stillness rather than feeling we need to be constantly busy  - Fiber and cloth offer a powerful set of metaphors, but we also celebrate the meditative practice of working with your hands. Contemporary research shows that dand crafting is a great way to deal with anxiety.  - Fite fuaite: an Irish term meaning “interwoven or inextricably connected.” Manchán Magan, a teacher, broadcaster, and ambassador for the Irish language writes about the Irish words for weaving at https://www.making.ie/stories/irish-words-weaving (making.ie) - The final word from Nicole: trust the process, but also take your action steps Our Music Music on the show is by the wonderful Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental Duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. On this weeks episode Simon k speaks to Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh from the band Altan Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is a native of the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair. Her first language is Gaelic and she has learnt many of her songs from family and neighbours as well as sourcing older material from archive facilities. She is renowned as one of the leading exponents of Donegal fiddle music and likes to promote the music which she has inherited from her late father Francie, whenever possible. She is a founding member of Cairdeas na bhFidléirí, which was set up 25 years ago to preserve and facilitate the development of the Donegal fiddling tradition for future generations. Mairéad's musical inspiration initially came from her family and neighbours, her father being a great fiddle teacher with a wealth of unusual local tunes, many learnt from his mother, Róise. She also received tuition and inspiration from Buncrana fiddle player, Dinny McLaughlin, who was a frequent visitor to her home when she was growing up. Mairéad founded Altan along with her late husband, Frankie Kennedy; from humble beginnings they brought their music to the world arena without compromising the deep musical tradition they loved. Along with her work with Altan, Mairéad is always in demand for solo work or presenting traditional music programmes on radio or television; past projects include the classic radio show The Long Note and the television series The Pure Drop and The Full Set on RTÉ1. Mairéad has recorded with other musicians such as Enya, the Chieftains, Dolly Parton, The String Sisters, T With the Maggies, and many more. Mairéad's first solo project, Imeall, was released in 2009. Chan provides a personal perspective to our conversation: Born in Hong Kong, he came to Donegal when he was eight years old, to the small town of Buncrana, and lived with his uncle who ran a Chinese restaurant. We talk about what it was like being the only Chinese kid in town, how he rediscovered his own Chinese heritage, the history of Chinese food in Ireland and what its future holds as local palates and attitudes evolve. How did you run a Chinese restaurant when you got rice and soy sauce from England once a month? Why are there separate menus for the Irish and Chinese? This week we review - Derry Girls (Series 1 Episode 1)It's 1994 - a time when nobody can seem to agree on anything, except how much they all enjoy using an acronym (The IRA, The UDA, The RUC). Armed police in armoured Land Rovers, British Army check points and "peace" walls are all an everyday reality for 16-year old Erin and her friends.Erin lives with her uncompromising mother, her long-suffering father and the fearsome 'Granda Joe', a man whose love for his daughters and granddaughters is surpassed only by his contempt for his son-in-law.Erin is used to seeing her country on the nightly news. This is a time of armed police in armoured Land Rovers and British Army check points. But it's also the time of Murder She Wrote, The Cranberries, MJ and Lisa Marie, Doc Martens, bomber jackets, The X Files, Nirvana and Wayne's World. And while The Troubles may hang over her home town, Erin has troubles of her own...Terrible with boys and convinced nobody understands her, Erin would love to be a rebel, and sometimes flirts with the idea of standing up to those in authority, like her Principal - the eternally unimpressed Sister Michael, or divorcing her parents, à la Macaulay Culkin, but she never quite has the nerve. She has grand ambitions to become a famous writer and thinks of herself as thoroughly liberal and worldly, yet she's never ventured further than Buncrana...Written by Lisa McGeeDirected By Michael LennoxProduced by Catherine Gosling Fuller and Sam PinnellA Ha Trick Production for Channel 4.Derry Girls is available here: https://bit.ly/37crlplThe Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube.Subscribe for a new episode each Monday.Get in touch - we're @ComedySlab on Twitter and ComedySlab on Facebook.

Shrine Seventeen: the lost souls.  Location:  55.197781, -7.553101 Fort Dunree and its surroundings are possibly the richest site from which to reflect on several momentous events in not just local history, but in our national heritage. Hear more in this audio piece from racontour founder, John Ward. Certain landscapes, such as the Boyne valley or Kinsale harbour, have borne witness to seminal dates in Irish history. Lough Swilly, whose name appropriately derives from the Gaelic for eyes, "suile" on account of St. Colmcille slaughtering a beast with many eyes on its shores, must rank highly amongst such sites. It is said that when the human memory has been outlived, the landscape remembers; peering across Lough Swilly from Dunree Head, feeling the Atlantic breeze upon one's face, take a few minutes to sense the redolence of momentous events that helped shape Ireland's destiny. To the left of the lough beyond Fahan lies the ancient seat of the high kings of Ireland at Grianan of Aileach.  On the right of the lough is the port of Rathmullan, where the old Gaelic order came to an end with the Flight of the Earls on the 14th September 1607. In the garrison town of Buncrana, the Irish patriot Wolfe Tone's crusade for Irish freedom came to an end on November 3rd 1798 after his boat The Hoche foundered and he was arrested. On the 18th September 1914, the inhabitants along the shore awoke to find the lough filled with warships, becoming the main base of the British fleet under Admiral Jellicoe in World War One. Finally, consider the very soil of Dunree itself and neighbouring Leenan fort, the last parcels of land to be handed back by the British to the Irish on the 3rd October 1938.  Consider the thousands of souls that have passed between Dunree and Saldanha Head across the lough: the forlorn hopes of Wolfe Tone before being apprehended; the despondency of the chieftains fleeing these shores, never to return; the imminent death of 274 people on the H.M.S. Saldanha on the 4th December 1811; the relief of an incoming British battleship at escaping the German mines or the gratitude of the wary traveller such as John Newton arriving on the 8th April 1748 from a tempest, immortalised in his song, Amazing Grace.
