Born and raised in the heart of the Pyrenees, Kilian Jornet is the GOAT of mountain running and skimo, and he's an accomplished climber too. This past summer, Jornet used his extraordinary fitness and deep reservoir of mountain skills and savvy to tackle one of the greatest challenges of the Alps: a traverse of all 82 of the range's 4,000-meter peaks, solely by foot and bike. The fastest previous time for this link-up was 60 days. Jornet did it in 19. Cutting Edge host Jim Aikman interviewed Kilian Jornet about his “Alpine Connections” project—the preparation, the physiological and psychological challenges, and the real dangers of covering hundreds of kilometers of serious alpine terrain at speed, often alone. For context on the history of grand Alpine enchainments and commentary on Jornet's latest feat, Jim spoke with Colin Haley, elite climber and Chamonix resident; Buzz Burrell, one of the originators of the Fastest Known Time (FKT) movement; and Dougald MacDonald, editor of the American Alpine Journal. Is it mountaineering? Is it running? Whatever you think of a feat like this, it's undeniably at the cutting edge.
Hosts Zoë Rom and Buzz Burrell discuss the rise of races that are 200 miles and longer, why different running goals are valid, and what draws us to different events. 14:20 Zoë interviews the winner of the 2024 Cocodona 250, Rachel Entrekin, about how she approaches multi-day races and balances training with work and life (or doesn't!). They discuss sleep strategies, and how people can train for their first 200 mile race. 38:02 Buzz interviews Candice Burt, owner of Destination Trail Races, which hosts the Triple Crown of 200-mile races. They discuss Candice's work as a race director, what it takes to put on a 200-mile race, and her approach to long-distance races and FKTs as an athlete.
00:49:47 Hosts Buzz Burrell and Zoë Rom discuss why the Western States Endurance run is getting so dang fast, and talk about why the Hardrock Endurance Run (which is not a race!!) attracts high caliber athletes and adventurers year after year. 14:54:35 Zoë Rom chats with Courtney Dauwalter about her historic triple last year, winning WSER, Hardrock and UTMB in a single summer, and how she's going to approach her big loop around the San Juan Mountains this weekend. 29:27:78 Buzz Burrell interviews Hardrock Race Director Dale Garland about why the event attracts runners from all over the world, what he's doing to make it more accessible, and what it takes to complete the wild and tough loop Thanks to our generous partner, LMNT! The health sector is getting a $16 billion boost over the next three budgets. It's part of the Government's plan to invest in frontline services. $12.2 billion of that will go towards primary health care, $31 million is going to increasing security in emergency departments, and $22 million will be used to train 25 more doctors each year. Buzz Burrell, Interim Chair of General Practitioners Aotearoa, told Mike Hosking that overall, they like what they saw. He said that they've got a baseline budget of $30 billion, and to an additional half of that coming over the next three years, they've got to welcome that. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And in the context of our health system, prevention looks like a strong primary care service that's focused on keeping you healthy and out of the emergency department. The problem is though, Primary Care, as we know it, is broken. Our current funding model has driven GP practices to the brink of insolvency. Many are forced to close down or are selling out to profit driven corporates, who want to make your sickness work for their shareholders. By overenrolling patients and pushing doctors to see more people in a day, we will see a two tier Primary health care service beginning to form. Where the days of knowing your local GP might be reserved for those that can afford the premium service. And at the same time, our fascination with medical specialists has relegated the humble medical generalist to the bottom of the pile. Fewer and fewer doctors are interested in pursuing pathways in generalist fields and instead are opting for more lucrative, but highly niche specialties. We know how important primary care is for keeping people healthy, but why aren't we prioritising it? It seems like we have things backwards. On the latest episode of Revolving Door Syndrome, I kōrero with the energetic power duo that is Dr Marcia Walker (Whakatōhea/Ngāti Porou) and Dr Buzz Burrell. Both passionate about the power of primary care, brimming with real ideas about how we can tackle these issues head on.

Questions over how the Government managed to spend $531 million on unused Covid tests. Our newsroom can reveal Te Whatu Ora has almost $60 million rapid antigen tests in stock around the country, with 30 percent of them either having already expired or due to by month's end. General Practitioners Interim Chair, Buzz Burrell, told Francesca Rudkin he's glad the figures weren't swept under the carpet. He says we need to be asking where they've gone wrong, as someone has given the Government some well-meaning but not very helpful advice. A Te Whatu Ora spokesperson says they're considering approaching the market - to seek recycling and disposal options or creative sustainable waste solutions. Have you ever wondered: what's at the root of Alex Honnold's need for speed? In this episode of the podcast, we sat down with the ever-fascinating Alex Honnold, and put him in conversation with one of ulta running's forefathers and one of the inventors of the FKT concept, or “fastest known time,” the one and only Buzz Burrell. In this episode, we took inspiration from Alex, who blends sports like running and rock climbing to create massive link-ups like the HURT and the CUDL, to investigate the philosophies behind climbing speed records, ultras, and mountain traverses and link-ups. Why are we so obsessed with speed in the mountains? How do speed records and first ascents play off each other? And what can putting ultra runners and speed record holders together in conversation reveal about these sports we love? The iconic Alex Honnold and Buzz Burrell weigh in on all this and more.

In this episode we talk with Buzz Burrell, a co-founder of fastestknowntime.com, a tracking website that has been cataloging the modern FKT movement here in the United States and abroad, to my knowledge, for the better part of the last decade. While there is no governing body for FKT certification, fastestknowntime.com has acted as the informal arbiter of these records. We spend the majority of the conversation getting into the details about the recent sale of fastestknowntime.com to Outside Magazine earlier this month. But there's a lot more to Buzz that's interesting that we delve into at various points. For example, he's been trail and ultra running since the late 1960s and has set a wide array of fastest times and first attempts at many classic routes here in the United States including the Colorado Trail and John Muir Trail. And in addition to his work on the FKT site, he has also been an athlete manager for La Sportiva and Brand Director for Ultimate Direction and will be joining Ultrarunning Magazine next month as a regular columnist.Timestamps:(1:50) - what it was like being in the trail and ultra scene before it was popular(5:18) - slow growth on the professional side of trail and ultra running(11:13) - whether the growth of the FKT community is good(19:07) - description of fastesknowntime.com(21:09) - the inspiration for building the website(23:12) - whether there were always business aspirations for the website(24:42) - the pros and cons of full-time versus part-time investment(30:06) - why the website was sold in 2022(34:39) - the assets that Outside Magazine was most interested in(36:29) - audience numbers for the website(37:40) - improvements coming to the website(39:48) - whether the people working on the site should be community experts(42:46) - objections to the sale to Outside Magazine(45:36) - the realities of social media and content businesses in trail running(50:42) - requests for startups in the trail and ultra running space(51:58) - favorite guests on the FKT podcast(55:59) - Lazarus LakeLinks:Fastest Known Time WebsiteOutside Magazine acquires fastestknowntime.comAdditional Episodes You May Enjoy:#7 - Mark Gainey | Co-Founder of Strava, Trail Running, Athlete Creators#8 - Larissa Rivers | Trail Running Stores, Sports Marketing, Strava#3 - Jimmy Daly | Social Media, Content Creation, Branding For Trail RunnersSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/singletracknews)

Shanty and Mary review this year’s FKT round up with Buzz Burrell, co-founder of FastestKnownTime.com and co-host of the FKT Podcast. Buzz takes us through the rise of the FKT, what makes a solid FKT route, the allure of the solitary push to set a speed record, and why the FKT has become so popular in this year of pandemic lock downs, civil unrest, and wildfires. Widely known as the "Father of the FKT" and a champion of many FKT records of his own, Buzz delivers this year’s round up of robust FKT activity and his four tips for pushing on as the years pile up. Plus, you’ll never guess what indoor activity Buzz has mastered, proving that Buzz is so much more than a mountain athlete!
Usually accomplished solo — even in normal times — and often in remote locations, FKTs seem immune to the ravages of COVID-19 shut-downs and quarantines. FKTs have been providing a virtual racing milieu informally for the last ten years, and a more formal platform since 2018. It didn’t take long for runners, all trained up with nowhere to go, to find their way to FKTs. “It’s grown [since the pandemic shutdown] by about three-and-a-half times.” said Buzz Burrell, one of three volunteers who manages the FKT website. I am planning on doing the Inman 300: What is the Inman 300? It has been called “the world’s first urban thru-hike.” There is no trail or signs to follow, but there is a more-or-less official route. The Inman 300 gets it’s name from it’s creator, Bob Inman, and (roughly) the number of public stairways incorporated into the route. At 218 miles with 344 public stairways, it’s roughly the same length as the John Muir Trail. Endurance Noise & Random Musings Please Subscribe to my YouTube Channel! Stay Healthy. Be Boring. Fastestknowntime.com volunteer Craig Randall discusses with Buzz Burrell that this virus is not going away any time soon ... so what are we going to do about it? "We put our own country into a medically-induced coma ... I think it's time to revive the patient." The pandemic is certainly an enormous tragedy, which we fortunately took extreme action to limit. And now two months in, we have learned a few things so we can correct some early misconceptions, and hopefully develop a sustainable plan. "Every day we have been counting the terrible illnesses and deaths. But we should also try to consider and avoid the huge collateral damage caused not by the virus itself, but by our attempts to control it."
Peter Bakwin and Buzz Burrell popularized the term Fastest Known Times when they set the FKT on the John Muir Trail in 2000. A few years later they created the website that helps our community record cool routes around the world. With the cancellation or postponing of many races this year, more people are "projecting" adventures that might lead to an FKT. Buzz joins us to talk about the rise in popularity of FKTs and how you can participate! Tune into the Fastest Known Time Podcast Listen to Buzz's past podcast with us.
