Caring Hearts and Hands of Columbia is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to taking care of people at the end of their life. Nurse Jackie Reed and Deb Portell of Caring Hearts and Hands of Columbia joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable" program. Ms. Reed tells listeners that their home "basically takes the place of a person's own home. And our guests and volunteers, I mean our volunteers and our staff, are an extension of their family." Ms. Reed, who co-founded Caring Hearts and Hands of Columbia, is a nurse with 28 years of experience at Boone Hospital Center. Her passion for end-of-life care is due to personal family losses. Ms. Portell is a board member who has a heart for those nearing the end of their life. She appreciated hospice care during the final days of four members of her family and became a hospice volunteer in 2001. Jackie Reed and co-founder Dorreen Rardin saw patients throughout their nursing careers who needed end-of-life care but couldn't afford it. Those patients didn't have anyone to assist them at home at the end of their lives:

“If people know what you're doing, they will come out of the woodwork. If the commitment's there and you really want to do it, it's definitely possible.” This episode is sponsored in part by Telecom Consultants, Buzz to the Rescues, and Maddie's Fund. Stacy speaks with Carla Betlem, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology where she has been performing TNR for nearly 15 years. Carla along with several RIT students came together to establish a campus club, Caring Hearts For RIT Cats, which provides care, comfort, and security to the feral cats on and surrounding RIT's campus. Caring Hearts, which became an official college club in 2019[1], has over 400 student members involved. The club operates as a nonprofit entity and has a board of directors, along with various committees and subcommittees. Carla describes how this club was founded, how its members communicate, and the importance of training others to become leaders. She stresses the importance of educating students about the resources available in caring for their pets, as well as the importance of having them involved in caring for RIT's cats. Carla also provides advice for individuals that would like to begin a similar program at their own university. Today I chat with Terry Blaine, who is an internationally renowned jazz singer. She has enjoyed a varied musical career, including concert performances, radio, TV, recording and production. She is one of the few contemporary jazz vocalists specializing in the hot small band swing music from the 1930's. Terry is also a music therapist and she is internship director at Hospice, Inc., serving patients and families in Dutchess and Ulster Counties in New York's beautiful mid-Hudson Valley. Music Therapy is an integral part of the compassionate care provided by hospice professionals, helping to improve the quality of life for those facing terminal illness by addressing physical needs, offering emotional support, and encouraging spiritual connection to promote comfort, acceptance and peace. At Hospice, Inc., Terry provides clinical music therapy services to hospice patients and families in the home care, nursing home, and hospital settings, oversees the Education Program for Music Therapy Interns, coordinates music for children's bereavement groups and public memorials, and promotes an annual concert at Bard College called "Healing Voices, Caring Hearts" that raises awareness (and funds!) for the music therapy program. She is also an adjunct at SUNY New Paltz, teaching voice to music therapy students. This fall, Terry will be on tour singing classic jazz with longtime compatriots Mark Shane and Allan Vache. Terry lives in West Hurley, NY with her husband, composer/producer Tom Desisto, and their son, Michael.
