There isn't anything else like the Queen of the Classics and, if this season so far is anything to go by, we've got an exciting weekend of racing in front of us. The women's field will face the thirty cobbled sectors under the sun on Saturday, while there's a chance of rain and mud for the men on Sunday as Tadej Pogačar aims to be the first reigning Tour de France champion to win the Hell of the North in decades. Velo's Andrew Hood, Jim Cotton, and Mike Levy sat down to chat about how to ride the cobbles like a pro, Roubaix bike setup, favorites and wildcards, the chances of anyone beating Kopecky in the velodrome (slim), and how van Aert, Pedersen, Ganna, and Van der Poel could tag team Pogi.

Voor het betere sloopwerk moet je bij Pogi zijn. Vanaf de tweede keer Oude Kwaremont bleef hij hameren tot ze uiteindelijk bij de laatste keer Oude Kwaremont moesten capituleren. Geen Pogi, geen Mathieu, geen Ganna, geen Wout. Wellicht dat de organisatie van Gent Wevelgem ietwat beteuterd naar de startlijst heeft gekeken aangezien een hoop van die jongens op voorhand wel hadden aangekondigd om langs te komen. Wij bankzitters maalden er niet om. De kans op een mooie strijd werd met elke afzegging namelijk een stuk groter. De koers ontplofte uiteraard in de Moeren en Pedersen liet daar al zien dat het menens was. Op de Kemmel deed hij een sollicitatie naar het whatsappgroepje en in de kilometers naar de finish zette hij dat nog extra in de verf. Wat een renner. Heel benieuwd naar wat hij zondag kan want dan staat De Hoogmis op het programma!

Een late afmelding in een groepsapp is nooit leuk. Zeker niet in het appgroepje van het totaalwielrennen. Maar Pogi startte niet in de E3 Prijs te Harelbeke en die werd daarmee helaas toch wat minder spannend. Ondanks het nieuwste groepslid Ganna en dat andere groepslid Pedersen beiden (en teams) in geweldige vorm. En een valpartij die voor wat spanning zorgt, dat wil je niet. En als het dan gebeurt, dan in ieder geval tijdens de tv-uitzending. Mathieu van der Poel wint andermaal een van onze favoriete koersen van het jaar en pakt ook de gratis badkamer. But are the superteams good or bad for the sport, and is riding for one of them actually all it's cracked up to be? In this month's Talking Tactics, Southam fills us in on the upcoming UCI meeting to discuss whether additional wild cards should be issued for the biggest races. Now that some of the biggest riders, the likes of Pidcock, Hirschi, and Alaphilippe, have stepped down to ProTeam level, race organisers are stuck between a rock and a hard place if they want to keep the classic second division teams happy whilst also getting the fan favourites at their races. Plus, the UCI undermining all the hard work the lower ranked World Tour teams over the last few years to avoid relegation - it's absolute chaos.  Of course, we wrap things up with the Communi-quiz. Southam's quiz master this month, and he's bought out the race commentary clips for Durbo and I to guess the rider and the race. Kan een koers mooier zijn dan Milaan-San Remo? Giertje beweert al jaren van niet. Het begint en eindigt wat hem betreft bij La Primavera. En we moeten langzaamaan toch toe gaan geven dat hij wel eens een punt zou kunnen hebben. Afgelopen zaterdag trakteerden drie renners ons op een finale om handen, voeten en neus bij af te likken. Mocht je daar trek in hebben natuurlijk. Pogi deed toch weer het onvoorstelbare. Van der Poel ging daar naadloos in mee en Ganna pushte zichzelf, en die twee voor zich, tot het uiterste. Wat een koers. Wat een finale. Wat een winnaar!

In her music, jazz singer and composer Ganna Gryniva combines traditional Ukrainian folk songs with the sounds of modern jazz and electronic music. She came to Germany at the age of 13 and moves between two cultures and manages to combine these different influences in her art. In aanloop naar de wegwedstrijd worden we de komende week verwend door van alles en iedereen op een fiets. Afgelopen weekend stond de tijdrit bij zowel de mannen als de vrouwen op het programma. Vooraf leek er maar 1 favoriet te zijn en die maakte het dan ook waar, Evenepoel. Maar gelukkig wist Ganna het wel spannend te maken door een knallend slot. Bij de vrouwen wisselden Vollering en Brown stuivertje maar viel het dubbeltje net de verkeerde kant op voor onze landgenote.

Zondag 22 september - Thijs Zonneveld en Hidde van Warmerdam Thijs is duidelijk na de zege van Remco Evenepoel; 'hij is echt een fenomeen!' Ganna was een stuk beter dan dat hij vooraf deed voorkomen. Bij de vrouwen pakte Demi Vollering een hele mooie zilveren plak op de tijdrit vandaag. En ondertussen werd Van der Poel in Luxemburg van alle kanten aangevallen en kon hij zich opnieuw testen in aanloop naar volgende week. Op papier waren het 3 sprintetappes, in de praktijk ging het heel anders. Pogi en G vielen aan, evenals Ganna maar zelfs deze klasbakken haalden het niet tot de meet. Benjamin Thomas daarentegen, gaf een lesje hoe je moet durven verliezen. Hij won, tegen alle verwachtingen in. Niets is wat het lijkt in de Giro.
