Rev. Cyril A. Stevens – Sermon 0480A recorded on January 17, 1982 teaching from Romans 7 – Carnal Christianity. Pastor Cyril Stevens examines Romans 7 in looking at the persistent struggle with sin even after salvation, which Stevens illustrates using the analogy of a corpse bound to a murderer. He argues that Paul isn’t describing “carnal…

Sunday Morning Service, August 20, 2023 Series: Faith in Motion Message: Carnal Christianity Passage: James 4:1-6 Speaker: Pastor Eric Johnson
In the life of the Church there have been many errors believed by those that profess faith, and even taught by those in the pulpit. Legalism, Antinomianism, and Easy-Believism are just three examples. One that is very common today is Carnal Christianity, where the sinner seeks salvation from Christ, but not His Lordship, as if there can be any redemption without the duty of obedience. In our text today, Christ makes it very clear that the love of God, obedience to His Word, salvation and sanctification are not a pick-and-mix assortment, but they are one complete package, whereby Christ must be Saviour AND Lord, or He is nothing to you---1. Loving Christ As Lord--2. Receiving The Father's Love--3. Experiencing More Of Christ
September 30, 2022 Daily Devotion: "Spiritually Higher " 1 Corinthians 3:1 New International Version 3 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. Division was wrecking the church in Corinth. Quite unbelievably, various ones were claiming allegiance to Peter, or Paul, or Apollos! Even Those who maintained allegiance only to Christ had become a cliquish fellowship to themselves. So much for Jesus' prayer for unity! When you consider the mix of Jews and Gentiles in Corinth, you can begin to make sense of this. By their culture, Jewish Christians would have been more attracted to the excitement of miraculous signs; while the Gentile Christians, being more intellectually-minded, preferred a focus on reason and heady doctrine. Paul's Response was blunt and incisive. Despite the unity that their common baptism into Christ ought to have produced, he argued, they had all missed the central message of the cross. For Jews with a long history of miracles, had any exciting miracle saved Jesus from the cross? For Gentiles enamored with human wisdom and philosophy, did the cross make any earthly sense? Put simply, the cross of Christ defied all worldly yearnings and expectations. The road to unity (and beyond) was through being spiritually mature, not carnally immature. Just how much has changed since Paul wrote his scathing letter? Are we not still carnally minded and worldly? How would you describe our various worship experiences-truly God-focused or self-satisfying? Our view of the end times transcendent spiritual triumph or cataclysmic earthly upheaval? Or our understanding of the nature of heaven and our resurrected bodies: otherworldly or still very much this-worldly? “When I was a child, I talked like a child, With Ought like a child, I reasoned like a child." Carnal Christianity is not simply a mark of spiritual immaturity, but a quintessential oxymoron. The cross-focused question is: If I were crucified alongside Jesus, would I Be looking down at the earth or lifting my human eyes spiritually higher? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gerzon-etino/message
Pastor Todd Lauderdale teaches an expository message through 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 titled, "Carnal Christianity."
What does it mean when the Bible talks about people being carnal or fleshly? Carnal Christianity is a big issue in the church. We all deal with it. In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares how we can conquer our carnal natures. What is a Christian? A Christian is a person whose belief in Jesus causes them to follow Him, cultivate a relationship with Him, and apply His teaching to their life until they begin to look like Jesus. What is a Carnal Christian? The word “carnal” means flesh, meat or the body. You are a three part being – body soul and spirit – and your body/flesh/carnal nature/natural man is broken.Romans 7:18 “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.” A carnal Christian is a believer who is still dominated by their old sinful, fleshly nature instead of their new spiritual, holy nature. *Being carnal is the opposite of being spiritual.Galatians 5:17 “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other…” *Carnal Christians are immature Christians.1 Cor 3:1-3 *Being carnal starts in your thought life.Romans 8:5-6 “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” How do you know if you're carnal?Galatians 5:19-21 Your carnal nature will try to show itself in your character, your communication, and how you deal with complications. How do we conquer carnality?1. Fight your flesh and strengthen your Spirit.1 Corinthians 9:27 2. Embrace your new nature. Colossians 3:10 “Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.” 3. Utilize intentional thinking.2 Corinthians 10:4-5 “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”You can use intentional thinking & deliberate speaking to reroute neural pathways, renew your mindand retrain your brain. 4. Practice the presence of the God.Romans 13:13-14 Galatians 5:6 “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Are you a carnal Christian?
Is there such a thing as Carnal Christianity? Hear Paul's explanation from Romans 7:14.

Carnal Christianity has emerged from centuries of the church trying to do the impossible: tame the flesh. In well-intentioned sermons, books, conferences and myriad other ways, ministry leaders have offered their secrets for taming the beast the Apostle Paul referred to as, “the flesh.” As a result, carnal Christianity has emerged. Not a Christianity that … Continue reading The post Taming the Flesh appeared first on Fueled By Grace.

Can a Christian be "worldly"? or "Carnal"? And if so, what does that really mean and look like in a practical sense for today's church? How would you define an "immature" Christian versus a "mature" Christian and does the maturity level of a Christian really matter anymore? As the Apostle Paul continues to confront the divisions in the Corinthian Church (as well as today's church), those are just a few of the questions he strives to answer and define. Could it be that one of the reasons so many Christians struggle in their relationship with God and their faith is their maturity level? Listen in as we try to allow Paul's teaching to shine some light on the "shallow" faith that seems to be so pervasive in the church today and what we can do about it. Could it be that spiritual immaturity is corrupting the message and ministry of the church and endangering Christ followers? Listen in! From 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:9.
Thru the Bible
The purpose of Christian teaching is to help believers grow in Christlikeness, and attain more and more to the status of who we have been called to be; children of God, a holy nation, heirs of the Kingdom of God (Romans 8: 28-30). On offer today across the world, and in particular in Africa and America, is the worship of the self where all teachings pertain to personal desires and achievements. Such teachings are false and stand against everything that the Word of God commands, and ultimately destroys its followers.

The gospel can be summed up in this one phrase, "die to yourself" yet at times, there seems to be a carnal mindset that gets into the culture of Christianity. This mindset makes loving Jesus more about a self help program then it does about reaching the world for Jesus Christ.
