President Trump has just started his second term, and a lot of things have been changing – but sadly, not for the better. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is one of the most adversely impacted subjects, making discrimination, stereotyping, and inequality much more rampant. In this episode, Corinna Bellizzi is joined by DEI coach and consultant Rachel Siegel to discuss how to overcome the United States' current crisis with systemic racism, classicism, and authoritarianism. They explain why DEI should never lead to social division but bring people together in peace and harmony. Rachel also explains how to be more critical when consuming different kinds of media and how to cultivate the right mindset to stop yourself from following leaders blindly.About Guest:Rachel Siegel is a white, queer, Jewish mother, artist, organizer, and educator on Abenaki land in Vermont. It's 2023, not 1960.  We live in a world where electronic devices are there at any turn, are in any pocket, and are in any hand.  Where there are phones, there is social media. Where there is social media, there are pictures online. Pictures with lighting enhancement, filters, photoshopping, editing and much more. Seeing these pictures leads to a body dissatisfaction and wishing that one could change the way they look. These photos aren't just photos people view online; they increase body image insecurity and negative self-talk offline as well. What is the correlation between the media and the way we view our bodies?  What do teenagers do with a phone? Click on an app, swipe, and watch…  That watching affects the mental health of many teenagers and creates behavioral problems and outburst of emotions  Many questions may arise when you hear the phrase “social media and body image” To answer those questions join me on this episode with Dr.Len Newman, a professor of psychology and a social psychologist at Syracuse University Who conducts research on a wide range of mental health topics He specializes in the different effect social media pictures have on body image Join me on my next episode on bipolar disorder and the day to day life with one who is diagnosed Lastly, email me at mentalhealthimage@gmail.com for questions you would like answered or any concerns! Are you a teenager that constantly picks at specific parts of your body appearance you don't like? Are you constantly flooded with negative comments? Then you may want too look into BDD. Body Dysmorphic Disorder is the constant obsession with body image and the continual worry about flaws and how others perceive your opinions. In this episode we have a guest, Dr.Cynthia Van Golen a professor of neuroscience at the University of Delaware. We will go over the factors that play a role in BDD, the symptoms, the effects in behavior as well as go over questions you may have. Body dysmorphia and the feelings along with it can affect lives.  Hiding, feeling ashamed, embarrassed, can happen one day and the another day you are basically being eaten alive by negative self comments. Covering yourself, going to extreme lengths to hide yourself, constantly picking at yourself wishing you could look different.  The list of the thoughts that go around in patients diagnosed with BDD is endless. People have negative thoughts which leads to depression, suicidal thoughts and more.  This can be caused by a variety of reasons whether it may be the environment all the way to childhood drama. And many more factors. So how can we help those who are diagnosed?  Today we will answer this question with Dr.Cynthia Van Golen  Dr.Cynthia Van Golen is a professor of neuroscience at Delaware State It is vital to create a safe environment, make them feel comfortable and most importantly to be in a complete judge free zone. Letting an individual open up is the first step in getting better. Once that is established, help is the next step.  There are different treatments whether it may be therapy or medication or sometimes both.  How would I even know if someone is diagnosed?  What do I look for? To dive into these answers check out this episode on BDD with our guest speaker Dr.Cynthia Van Golen for more.  Join me on my next episode on how social media pictures affect teenagers where we can dive into the main root of this arising BDD problem  Lastly, email me at mentalhealthimage@gmail.com for questions you would like answered or any concerns! Highlighted quotes: “BDD is a gradual increase from an obsession of their appearance to the point it's affecting school, work, etc.”  “BDD and OCD have a very similar incidence.”  “This isn't ego, this isn't self absorption, there are changes that actually occur in the brain with people with BDD meaning this is a true illness.”  “If this is something you are facing, get help and do not feel alone.”

Lily is diagnosed with BDD and is invited to a pool party which she dearly wants to go to but is held back by this invisible rope of fear: how others will analyze and criticize her body.  She goes through stages of sadness, frustration, embarrassment, and obsession due to the obstacles she faces throughout the story.  As she goes through these moments, it is important to analyze and break down what is happening and what is going through her head, as her internal monologue screams at her and floods her with negative thoughts.  Highlight Quotes:  Lily desires to be perfect and look like the ideal image she has in mind because “BDD is all about being obsessed with the whole idea of looking perfect even when there is no such thing as perfect”.  She goes through and expresses different behavior changes such as covering herself since “a patient with BDD would go to extreme lengths to make them feel comfortable and not bring attention to their appearance.”  Throughout the whole story she has negative comments filling her head. “It's quite simple. If you don't like the way you look or think there is something wrong, you won't have the confidence you wish to have.” Wishing she could change herself she does an online search looking for different ways to lose weight scrolling for hours and hours browsing through weight loss treatments and surgeries to diets to pre-made workouts that focus on losing fat.  For more research here are some resources I found helpful in my studying:  https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=k9jQCwAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PR9&dq=body+dysmorphic+disorder+feelings&ots=CITdRdWEA2&sig=2qEGLx3pNAgy4TMTEm5zUxx2Fu4#v=onepage&q=body%20dysmorphic%20disorder%20feelings&f=false https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7114025/ https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1357034X09347222  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1023/A:1022090200057 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0005796700001029 https://bmcresnotes.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1756-0500-6-36 https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/body-dysmorphia/#:~:text=BDD%20can%20seriously%20affect%20your,and%20even%20thoughts%20of%20suicide.

"Smart kids are good thinkers. They don't like to make mistakes, but they're going to. So many of them are perfectionists, as are many musicians. Beautiful things come out of that vulnerability."Heath Weber is Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Morningside University. During his tenure at Morningside, he has served as Associate Dean for Performing Arts, Music Department Chair, Director of Choral Activities, and artistic director for the Betty Ling Tsang Summer Performance Series. Prior to his appointment at Morningside, Heath Weber worked in public school music education at all levels, K-12.A South Dakota native, he found his home in Sioux City, Iowa, first teaching at East High School for 10 years before assuming his position at Morningside. His comprehensive choral program at East was the largest student organization in Iowa, engaging one-third of the student body at EHS. His competitive show choir, The Headliners, was voted one of America's top three favorite show choirs in Parade Magazine's first contest. As a performer, Weber has performed as a member of the GRAMMY-nominated South Dakota Chorale, an organization for which he has also served as Board President. Additionally, he has performed as a bass/baritone soloist with the South Dakota Symphony, The Sioux City Symphony, Opera South Dakota, and Together in Hope Choral Singers.Weber has directed camps for gifted and talented students for nearly three decades. We go out into the world to try to figure it out. How many years have been spent trying to find ourselves? Welcome back to the second part of this episode where I interview Katy Murray & Fiona Smith from Catalyst Collective; the co-founders of a global network of world changing women with a focus on changing the dialogue. They came together and founded Catalyst Collective just over 12 months ago and provide a community and resources, including on-line programmes and face to face coaching. Both have 20 years' experience in organisational consulting and leadership development and focus now on sharing that expertise (wisdom) with women leaders, and consulting with organisations that want to make a difference around inclusion. In part 2 Katy & Fiona share their insight and research into the gender pay gap, shifting the focus of discussion and how do we re-define leadership. They truly are two minds working in collaboration; looking to address the balance of leadership. We delve into comparison in the workplace and competition, discussing organisations and experiences where sharing isn't encouraged. They deliberately choose to work with an abundance mindset for themselves at Catalyst Collective; supporting and encouraging one another and creating together. Curiosity and boldness they hold one another's back rather than holding one another back. They've developed a partnership and sense of accountability which drives everything they're doing. This model was shaped in a time when men dominated the workplace. They are seeing women grappling with 'what is authentic leadership' and how can they remodel what 'good' looks like. In addition it's not just women either; it's men as well who are demonstrating feminised and masculine leadership. Passionate about what you do Hugely passionate about the work they are doing, they talk about the importance of full-body joy. However, saying yes to everything can become overwhelming and lead to a feeling of burnout. Katy says; "Everything we say yes to, is a no to something else." This is the Southern Rogue Podcast. This podcast features entrepreneurs, business owners, and change makers. With the idea of experience sharing in mind, I wanted the conversations to be real and unedited. This project has been a huge piece of 2019, and I’m looking forward to carrying it into the coming year. Ask yourself - what is your purpose? What are your goals? What is your why? Each person I interviewed for Season 2 was very different and you can feel the uniqueness in each episode. They share their jobs, their dreams, their challenges. I hope you’ll draw knowledge, strength, and insight to be your best self.  On this week’s episode, I sit down with Sunny Bray Cartmell, an entrepreneur and one of my best friends. Sunny has a background in technology and non-profits and has worked to combine those passions. In January 2019, she started a business called Catalyst Collective. You’ll be hearing a lot about Catalyst in this episode. Sunny is also responsible for bringing the successful networking group, Network Under 40 to Nashville. Inclusion Works
11. We’re Using the Wrong Bar to Measure Worker Success w/ Katy Murray and Fiona Smith

Inclusion Works

Inclusion and diversity aren’t about lowering the bar. They’re about finding the right bar in the first place. Fiona Smith and Katy Murray, cofounders of Catalyst Collective a consultancy creating resources and community for leaders who want to shift the dial on diversity and inclusion, visited the Inclusion Works podcast recently to share their views on what’s wrong with our traditional models for measuring worker success. Many workplaces have an unspoken, unconscious view of what the ideal worker looks like. It’s typically been defined by the traditional white male model of leadership (which is, by definition, exclusive). It often defines success by focusing on a particular educational background or certain life experiences that all too often are closely linked to privilege. When we don’t question or consider the inherent bias in this model, we put undue stress on the few senior minorities who might be on staff. They consequently feel they must fulfill all of the mentoring, coaching, etc. responsibilities to junior minority staff. If you’re looking to reset your bar, Smith & Murray have three suggestions to start. Use your privilege to get people's voices heard. Use your privilege to take people places. Make sure people get the credit for the work they do in the spaces where their voices aren't heard.

On this episode I interview Richmond Stace the Pain Coach and one of the co-founders behind Understand Pain. Richmond is a Chartered Physiotherapist specialising in treating and coaching people to manage and overcome their pain. His purpose is to improve the world by reducing the suffering caused by chronic pain, measured by people living their best lives. His vision is a world that understands pain, which would mean less suffering and more living. Where it began Richmond started out training to be a nurse before he progressed into physiotherapy. Through working with people who were suffering, he made a conscious decision to focus his time and energy on pain. He explores with his clients (and his audience) what he calls a 'complete' approach to pain and suffering. He treats the person as a whole; combining biology with psychology as he sees them being dependant of each other. Richmond talks about the importance of mindfulness but not from the point of having a chilled out life, being calm or sitting cross-legged on a cushion! For him, it's about becoming familiar with the way you think, how that's embodied and becoming skilful with that and being able to let go of things that are unhelpful. Fascinating and inspiring, Richmond is on a mission to change the way we think about pain. At the end of the interview I ask each guest for a final take away. Here's some final words of from Richmond; When you understand pain, you're starting to change your pain. Understand your pain to understand your potential. Who Is Allowed To Be Well? Yoga, mindfulness, and all manner of "wellness" practices have become a big business. As western culture encounters the wisdom of other cultures, it often appropriates and co-opts that wisdom, with the result being that many of these mind-body wellbeing practices are now seen as the provenance of the wealthy and privileged.  Kerri Kelly came to yoga after years in a corporate marketing career left her burnt out and disconnected. As she experienced her own personal healing, she started to ask deeper questions about who had access to these practices and what responsibility the privileged had to the rest of the suffering world. In this episode we discuss the ways in which wellbeing is intricately connected to movements for justice. Note: Kerri joins us from her coworking space, so you may hear some background noise. Why do we need to be talking about White Supremacy even though we really don’t want to? Our Guests: Michelle Johnson is a yoga teacher, social justice activist, licensed clinical social worker and Dismantling Racism trainer. With a deep understanding of trauma and the impact that it has on the mind, body, spirit and heart, her work focuses on helping people better understand how power and privilege operate in their lives. She explores how privilege, power and oppression affects the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energy body. As a clinical social worker in North Carolina beginning in 2001, Michelle specialized in trauma, eating disorders and racial identity work. In 2008, she completed her yoga teacher training with the goal of infusing different treatment modalities into my practice to better help clients align their minds and bodies. Through her specialty teacher training Skill in Action, Michelle teaches the intersection of yoga and social justice and inspires people to consider how they can radicalize their yoga practice to create a just world.
