Balancing work and well-being is a constant challenge for many, particularly for leaders who are managing both people and organizational commitments. Well-being easily slips down the priority list when pressing accountabilities come up, and it can feel like a “nice-to-have” rather than a necessity. However, well-being is a critical foundation for productivity, engagement, collaboration, and leadership, and research increasingly shows that when this foundation is lacking, it affects the overall health of the business. In today's episode, Emma Rose is joined by Conversant consultant and partner Kell Delaney and guest Eleanor Allen. Eleanor is CEO of Catapult for Change, focusing on empowering other leaders and organizations to overcome challenges and ignite innovative ideas that enable success. Having worked across the corporate and nonprofit sectors she brings a practical but whole-hearted perspective to the question of what it takes for businesses and people to thrive. She has recently been working to bring science-based tools to organizations that support workplace experience and peak performance. You can connect with Eleanor and learn more about her work below. Eleanor Allen is a visionary catalyst for positive change, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for both people and the planet. Her contributions to the engineering profession led to her induction into the National Academy of Engineering in 2020. Through her executive coaching and consulting business, Catapult For Change, Eleanor now focuses on empowering other leaders and organizations to overcome challenges and ignite innovative ideas that enable success. It's no secret that Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes are home to some of the largest petrochemical plants in the world. We're also a hub of activity when it comes to climate and resilience because of our sinking coastline and rising seas in an era of climate change. The intersection of these vast and important fields create some interesting opportunities for companies that also are based here and training young people to work in those companies in the future. Mark Fallon is CEO of APTIM, a Baton Rouge-based company that provides engineering, program management, environmental services, disaster recovery, complex facility maintenance, and construction services to clients in in the energy sector, as well as governments and the military. APTIM was spun off several years ago from CB&I, which, many in Baton Rouge may remember, bought The Shaw Group in 2013. Mark has been at the helm of the company since April 2020, which was, no doubt, an interesting time to start a new big challenge. But he came armed with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Prior to joining APTIM, Mark was president and CEO of sister companies – Envirocon, a national remediation and deocmmisioning contractor, and Modern Machinery, a distributor of heavy construction and minig equipment. He also worked at CH2M and started his career in the US Department of Energy under President Bill Clinton. Fran Harvey is Director of the Global Geospatial Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Innovation Park at LSU that teaches students to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage and display all kinds of spatial or geographical data using the only GIS Industry based certification program in the country. Are you wondering, "What exactly is GIS?" Well, you're not alone. Most people - and that certainly includes most highschool students - don't realize they are using GIS data every time they pick up their smart phone and open the map app or check the location of the Uber they're waiting on to pick them up or the Door Dash guy who is delivering their order. But GIS is everywhere and the Global Geospatial Institute believes that if young people can learn the skills that go into GIS they will be better prepared to enter today's workforce. Fran was introduced to GIS technology while working as an environmental scientist. She spent several years in disaster response and recovery as a senior GIS analyst and decided to go back to school for an advanced degree in the technology. She spent more than a decade at the La Dept of Environmental Quality as an environmental scientist and GIS analyst and went on to use her expertise in as a GIS specialist in the aftermaths of several gulf coast hurricanes. In 2014, Fran and her husband founded the Global Geospatial Institute. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Self Awareness and Openness Builds Winning Teams What can we learn from the Special Forces to build workplace teams? Noel DiBona has served on high performance teams in private business and in military Special Operations. Episode 109 (Noel is based in North Carolina) In this conversation with Noel DiBona we explore: How self awareness is the foundation for strong teams The importance of sharing strengths and blind spots Recognizing the effects of stress on you and your teammates Behavioral analysis and how to use it How not to forgo your perspective and authentic self When independence and collaboration clash About Noel DiBona: Noel began his career as an operations supervisor in a Clorox manufacturing facility and he was frustrated at the lack of productivity. He set out on a mission looking for ways to build better teams. Over 35 years he served on high-performing teams in military special operations and business. While serving in executive management at Fluor Corporate, CH2M and Tetra Tech he perfected a system to develop high-performing teams. As a consultant he has helped clients save millions of dollars through better resource use. His clients included Electrolux, DuPont, GSK and many others. Learn more about Noel DiBona and his services for building high-performing teams at the website www.ConsultDiBona.com You can arrange for a Team Improvement Plan (no charge) at the website. Excerpts from this conversation with Noel DiBona: 02:13 Delighted to be talking with you all. And I'm curious of all the teams you worked on, I would imagine working in Special Forces, one really learns how to appreciate all the nuances of a team working together for one purpose. 02:31 Absolutely George, in a team such as that high performance team, we all knew what our jobs were, we could fill in with for each other, we were cross trained, and were brutally honest with each other. But we would put our lives on the line for one another. So it was what you would consider to be the utmost highest respect, trust and open communication that you could possibly expect of any high performance team. It was truly a pleasure and an honor for me to be part of that through my career. 03:03 And Noel, did you find that you could take lessons learned in that team environment and apply it into business? 03:11 Absolutely, George, one of the things that we were able to do, when I came out of the military was really understand how people are orienting themselves towards getting their work done and how everybody works just a little bit differently. And when I came out of the military, I was very prone to looking forward to talking to people to understand what they were doing. And to just put myself in the learn mode. I was very inquisitive, asked lots of questions. I wanted to know how everything worked. And I got that from being in the military, because we're in contact with so many people, so many different folks from different walks of life, that I'm extremely comfortable dealing with many, many different types of individuals. And so right from the very beginning, when I got out of the military, I was focused on really building relationships with the people I worked with. ----- 06:52 In taking a deep dive into understanding ourself, and perhaps putting into words, features, characteristics that we never put into words, that's probably good for ourself. Is that also meant to be shared with the team saying, Hey, guys, here's how I think here's how I think through things. So please don't take it wrong when I do this? 07:18 Absolutely. The second part of this is for each individual on the team, to have an honest conversation with one another about their strengths, and their potential blind spots, the things that might make them a little bit not so easy to get along with when there's pressure and stress. We can talk with each other very openly, honestly, and in a cordial way, when there's no heat on us. But as the team comes under stress, the stress of everyday business, depending on what's happening in that company, people begin to work in a way where they might over utilize their strengths. And when they over utilize their strengths, there's a flipside to the good things that we do. For example, we might be really proactive, and we might be independent minded, which is a really good thing when you're trying to bring change about in the organization. However, if the other people are more collaborative, and I'm under a lot of stress, then it's going to come across in a way that might not really be that good to build teamwork from it might tear down teamwork a little bit. So we want every individual to have an open and honest conversation with one another, in order to gain a better sense of appreciation of who we are. And we can do this with people that have worked with each other for years and years. And sometimes they know, obviously, a little bit more than if they had just started working with each other. But it's really, really interesting to note that in most cases, they learn things about people that they never knew. ----- That's what we want is a situational awareness, in terms of what we're doing, and how we might need to do something different in order to bring the results that we're after. ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by improving your communication skills. After being called a conspiracy theorist and being censored, I now present you with the specific details of the evidence showing Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, Joe Biden, Christopher Heinz, James Biden, and the late Beau Biden's corrupt financial transactions. Recently, I presented government documentation and government contracts showing the U.S. government's financial interest in the Ukrainian Bio-Labs and the financial connections between Rosemont Seneca and Ch2M, Metabiota, and Black & Veach. Joe Biden's Brother James Biden was a minority partner in Hillstone International, a subsidiary of Hill International aka CH2M Hill, who not only was awarded over $1 billion in government construction contracts between 2010 and 2014 with no prior completed construction projects but also currently holds government contracts for operations involving the Bio-Labs in Ukraine. CNN and other large MSM sources claimed that Hunter Biden never received $3.5 million from Rosemont Seneca by way of Devon Archer, and I now prove that wrong. Hunter Biden not only received the money but was wired money to 4 different accounts, all of which I provide the account numbers for in the video. I also provide the entire account details that the money was wired from. Below is a link to the statements themselves, which are stamped as Evidence of the Department of Justice. The statements also show transactions washed through a corrupt Latvian Bank, and Devon and Hunter's dealings with the Bank of China. The Biden Family has a substantial conflict of interest and illegal ventures in China and Ukraine and this can not be ignored any longer. #Ukraine #BioLabs #JoeBiden #HunterBiden #JamesBiden #DevonArcher #ChristopherHeinz #DepartmentofDefense #DepartmentofState #DepartmentofJustice #RosemontSeneca #Burisma #Metabiota #HillstoneInternational #CH2M #JohnKerry #DonGraves #BankofChina Rosemont Seneca c/o Devon Archer Account Statements from 2014-2016: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6003585-Rosemont-Seneca-Bohai-Bank-Records-Listing.html The case regarding Steven Graves corruption in handing out government contracts between 2010-2013: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/texas-construction-company-s-owner-and-ceo-sentenced-prison-defrauding-state-department The article specifies Hunter Biden's Connection to the Ukraine Bio-Labs. I am providing viewers with concrete evidence linking Hunter Biden, John Kerry's step son Chris Heinz, and Devon Archer to investments made in Bio-Labs in Ukraine. Hunter Biden's firm Rosemont Seneca listed on its website in 2014 that it had financial interest in Metabiota, Ch2m, and other private entities contracted by the U.S Department of Defense to construct and and do research in Ukraines Bio facilities. There is also well documented relationship between Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, and Burisma. The show also provides detail about the Freedom Support Act of 1992 and how the restrictions of the act were repealed in 2007 under the Nunn-Luger Cooperative Threat Reduction Act of 2007 to allow for the Department of Defense to fund private entities for the purpose of operating these Bio-labs. I show how the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was going to cut Ukraine out of a substantial source of revenue in the form of transit fees for oil and gas exported out of Russia. The links provided below come from the department of state website, or other U.S government sites and is all verified. #Biolabs #Ukraine #Burisma #Joebiden #hunterbiden #JohnKerry #BarackObama #Russia #DevonArcher #RosemontSeneca #NunnLugerAct Freedom Support Act of 1992: https://www.congress.gov/102/statute/STATUTE-106/STATUTE-106-Pg3320.pdf Nunn-Luger Cooperative Threat Reduction Act of 2007: https://www.congress.gov/109/bills/s313/BILLS-109s313is.pdf 2005 Ukraine Weapons Proliferation Agreement signed by Barack Obama: https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/05-829-Ukraine-Weapons.pdf Senate Report on Hunter Biden's Dealings and Transactions with Burisma, Metabiota and other foreign businesses: https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Ukraine%20Report_FINAL.pdf Document showing the Department of Defense funding to private entites for the purpose of building and conducting research in Bio-Labs in Luhansk: https://photos.state.gov/libraries/ukraine/895/pdf/dtro-luhansk-eng.pdf Document showing the Department of Defense funding to private entites for the purpose of building and conducting research in Bio-Labs in Kharkiv: https://photos.state.gov/libraries/ukraine/895/pdf/dtro-kharkiv-eng.pdf This article provides other links to documents regarding DOD funding of Bio-Labs in Ukraine: https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2022/03/breaking-us-department-defense-funding-ukrainian-biolabs-russia-releases-list-biological-agents-tested-us-biolabs-ukraine-including-salmonella-e-coli-anthrax-plague/

Read more about this episode. This week I speak to Ozzie Gonzalez, a former CH2M colleague. Ozzie founded P3 Consulting, dedicated to helping businesses grow while improving their environmental and social footprint. Ozzie calls himself an urban ecologist and has dedicated his career to designing and building solutions that bridge environmental health with community prosperity. Ozzie was Portland's first Latino candidate for mayor.Ozzie started P3 Consulting to bring people-, planet-, profit-centric solutions into projects. “I have a foundation in environmental science, and I apply it to a human ecosystem to try to figure out how to bring balance between the way human beings live and the quality of life that we would like to hold onto into the future.”We spoke about his role on the TriMet board, where he's helped bring transit-oriented development guidelines into the agency; create the first low-income fare program and decriminalizing fare evasion; and adopted a policy to decarbonize the entire TriMet vehicle fleet. Then I asked him about Portland. Ozzie and I talked about the Black Lives Matter protests, the ongoing houseless and business challenges, and how to reboot Portland.“The future is cloudy, but what I'm certain of is we we've got to come back...The Pacific Northwest is poised for livability for decades to come…there's a lot of fear of taking risks from our elected officials, and it was part of what motivated me to run.”Then we moved into the issues of displacement and gentrification. I asked him how we design for equity. Ozzie shared his ideas for creating a model where people could buy into affordable housing but have a stake in it for the long term.I knew Ozzie has a passion for sustainable food, so we delved into that topic in our conversation. “We have major things to change in our food system...we need to recognize it is unsustainable...the institution of food is heavily reliant on monoculture and mass industrialization, and on genetically modified seeds that depend on a very specific regimen of petrochemical-based fertilizers and insecticides.”He'd like to see less reliance on mass food systems, more focus on dealing with food waste, and more local food production.“I'm a big believer in love...I try to eat as much pure love as I can. And what I mean by that is I care about how it's cooked. I care about how it's grown. I care about how it's transported and in all those instances what I'm really looking for is a chain of custody filled with people that are doing something that they love doing that feel honored to be doing it. That's what I look for first.”I asked Ozzie what's next in his life after working as an urban ecologist, architect, dad and husband, sustainability manager, professional actor (we didn't even touch on that role!), public speaker and activist, business mentor, diversity manager, and candidate for mayor. “I plan to die fighting to make this world a sustainable, equitable place.”He's working on a passion project, a development in a pueblo in Mexico. Ozzie wants to build an ecotourism playground where virtual workers can live, work, and play in the same location. He plans to create a net zero, highly efficient smart home for digital nomads, content creators, and others who can work virtually.I asked Ozzie for his advice to others who want to create companies that care.“Well, do it. Go for it please. We need them companies that care. It's the only way to ensure longevity. Every company out there is going to have to learn this lesson sooner or later of how to care for its people, for its natural resources. There's simply no way around that, and many companies will go bust, not ever having learned that lesson.”

If you like what you hear or read, visit my Fertile Ground Communications page on Patreon and find out how you can support my work.I interview two of my CSR mentors. Elisa Speranza chaired the CH2M Foundation board, and Ellen Sandberg was executive director. We spoke about how CH2M rebooted its foundation and invested in sustainable development around the world. CH2M was an engineering firm founded in 1946. By 2016 it had become a $6 billion global project management powerhouse, with 20,000 employees and thriving, award-winning sustainability and corporate citizenship programs, including a charitable foundation. The company was acquired by Jacobs in 2017. Elisa Speranza was a VP and chair of the CH2M Foundation board. She helped to relaunch the foundation in 2013 by hiring Ellen Sandberg; rebooting the board; redefining the mission; and identifying strategic giving pillars: STEM education, sustainable communities, and employee engagement. In 2014, the foundation formalized relationships with 10 strategic partners to focus giving for greater impact, and also established a disaster matching gift program for employees. During Ellen's time as executive director, the foundation:Equipped teachers and students around the worldPartnered with clients such as Dow and The Nature Conservancy in STEM educationFocused on volunteerism, building seven footbridges with employee volunteers from around the world with Bridges to ProsperitySet a policy requiring donations to support STEM education or environmental stewardship to align with clients' goals Broke records for its workplace giving program in support of Water For PeopleI had the fortune of working with both Ellen and Elisa as the marketing communications manager for CH2M's sustainability and corporate citizenship programs, including the CH2M Foundation. As for Ellen, she describes her role as executive director of the CH2M Foundation as “definitely my most meaningful corporate social responsibility role to date.” Before Ellen was hired, CH2M HILL's foundation was taking an old-fashioned approach, giving checks to universities where executives had gone to school and supporting the CEO's favorite causes in Denver. Listen to the podcast to learn how they overcame stumbling blocks and persuaded people that this was the right approach. To determine the strategic giving pillars for the foundation, they started with the company's strategic plan and our company values and aligned corporate giving policies with those values.CH2M tied its giving goals with its business priorities, so STEM education and sustainable community-building were critical areas of focus. The other emphasis was employee volunteerism, and the foundation provided plentiful opportunities for employees to volunteer their technical skills to build sustainable infrastructure. CH2M earned multiple accolades and awards for our commitment to sustainability and corporate citizenship, including the World Environment Center (WEC) Gold Medal Award for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development and garnering the #22 spot on FORTUNE's Top 50 Companies That Change the World. We wished we were all in one place, sharing a glass of wine. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane!
The term sustainability is thrown around a lot. While we can understand its meaning, what does it look like and what are some ways we are already being more sustainable people. Jose B. Menzer Pehlivan, whose passion came when she experienced an earthquake at age 13, earned a PHD in Civil Engineering in 2013 from the University of Texas at Austin with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering and is currently a Geotechnical Engineer at CH2M. Civil Engineering has 6 types of Majors; Structural, Geotechnical, Transportation, Hydro-logical, and Construction Engineering. A Geotechnical Engineer specializes in Earthquake engineering/ground motion and a masters degree will be very useful vs simply a 4 year undergraduate degree. What is exciting about Geotechnical engineering is that every project is different as you need to make sure that every building will stand up and the ground is always different. Menzer notes that engineering is all about solving problems and there is always A way! She was questioned by her high school teacher why a girl would want to be an engineer, but her grandfather who believed in her said to go for it! When you believe you can do it, then do it!! and there will be many times you will doubt yourself, so find that one person who believes in you to bring you up when you are doubting. Menzer was also involved with the IMAX movie Dream Big. Recommended book is “Talent Is Overated” By Geoffrey Colvin.
