n this episode of The Reformed Brotherhood, Jesse and Tony dive into the final verses of Colossians 4, reflecting on Paul's closing words and the rich theological and practical insights they offer. The discussion begins by addressing the significance of these often-overlooked sections of scripture, emphasizing their God-breathed purpose and the enduring lessons they provide for the church today. Paul's ministry partners, including Tychicus, Onesimus, and Luke, take center stage as Jesse and Tony explore how God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes in His kingdom. The conversation also highlights the theme of reconciliation, particularly through Onesimus' story, as Paul sends him back to Colossae, urging the church to embody the gospel by welcoming him with grace. This practical application of theology reminds listeners that the gospel transforms relationships and calls believers to live out Christlike love in their communities. Jesse and Tony also unpack the broader implications of Paul's instruction to share the letter with the Laodiceans, underscoring the importance of scripture's universal application across time and culture. As the episode wraps up, the hosts reflect on the unity and encouragement found in Paul's words, reminding listeners of the value of every member of the body of Christ. They also prepare for their upcoming exploration of Philemon, which continues the story of Onesimus and offers further insight into living out faith in real-world situations. This episode is a rich blend of theology, practical wisdom, and encouragement for believers seeking to grow in their understanding of scripture and community. Key Points: The Significance of Paul's Final Words: Paul's closing remarks in Colossians 4, though seemingly mundane, reveal God's interest in the details of ministry and the importance of community within the church. God Uses Ordinary People: The episode highlights Paul's ministry partners, showing how God works through ordinary individuals like Tychicus, Onesimus, and Luke to advance His kingdom. Reconciliation in Action: The story of Onesimus demonstrates the transformative power of the gospel, as Paul encourages the Colossian church to welcome him back with grace and forgiveness. Universal Relevance of Scripture: Paul's instruction to share the letter with the Laodiceans emphasizes the broader application of scripture beyond its immediate audience, affirming its value for all believers. Practical Theology and Community: Jesse and Tony discuss the importance of living out theological truths in everyday life, particularly in fostering unity and encouragement within the church. Questions for Reflection: How does Paul's inclusion of specific names and details in his letters inspire you to see God's work in the “ordinary” aspects of ministry? What lessons can we learn from Onesimus' story about reconciliation and living out the gospel in challenging situations? How can we as believers ensure that our churches reflect the unity and diversity seen in Paul's ministry team? Why is it important to view scripture as universally applicable, and how does this perspective affect how we read and apply the Bible today? In what ways can you, like Paul's ministry partners, support and encourage others in your church or community?

In this episode of "Sermon Notes," host Jay Strother and guest Brian Ball delve into the intricate connections between medieval architecture, church leadership, and scriptural teachings. Using the metaphor of "flying buttresses," the episode explores how strategic support structures extend beyond the church walls into the community, similar to relationships in gospel ministry. The discussion encompasses church discipline, the essential role of lesser-known ministries, and the pressing need for prayer and faithfulness to scripture. As they analyze Paul's pastoral letters, particularly Second Timothy, they underscore the importance of contentment, mentorship, leadership development, and combating false teachings within the church. This episode richly intertwines theological insights with practical guidance for contemporary Christian living and leadership, ultimately reinforcing Jesus Christ as the only path to salvation.

A startling hole in most missionary training is a broad foundation of personal ministry in the local church content. Church planters desperately need to understand the dynamics, the highs and lows, the disappointments and joys, of ministry with and to real people in their sending church. The rewards are great! Relationships, skills, and growing in grace found in this context are foundational to long-term effectiveness in a missionary context. Take a deep breath. Let's do this right and do it with joy for the sake of Christ.
In this episode, hosts Cheryl Russell and Tiffany Dahlman dive into a critical and timely topic as they interview Collin Packer to explore a challenging topic that is on many of our minds in this season: Christian nationalism. We are just scratching the surface in this conversation as we discuss how Christian nationalism distorts the gospel, damages the church's witness, and poses significant challenges for pastors today. We also explore practical steps for navigating these difficult waters in the hopes of a communal remembering of the plot of our story, a story which centers on a crucified Lord. We are glad you are here to consider this with us. Collin Packer is the Scholar-in-Residence for the Siburt Institute for Church Ministry at Abilene Christian University. Following 13 years as a Lead Minister for congregations in Colorado and Texas, Collin served as the Director of Faith-Based Partnerships for CitySquare, the most comprehensive and effective poverty-fighting organization in Dallas, and the Communications Director for Texas State Representative Carl Sherman Sr. during Texas's 88th Legislative Session. Ever wondered what middle and high schoolers are worried about these days? Are their conversations at church similar to the ones we had as kids? Are their fears and worries the same, or how are they different? In today's episode, we sit down with Anna Aaron Harvey, a mom and the Minister to Middle and High School Girls at Hebron Church, to get a look behind the curtain of student ministry. Anna shares the latest trends she's seeing among these age groups and how they're currently navigating their faith journeys. She also offers advice for parents on how we can support student ministers and reinforce church teachings at home. And for parents of younger kids, Anna gives us advice on how we can prepare our elementary school kids for middle school if they aren't there yet. The Christian life isn't always straight forward. What does it mean to experience God? How important is Scripture? Is truth more about knowing facts or knowing a person? Can we really say we've been saved from sin if we continue to sin? Why does it sometimes seem so hard to follow God? Theologian, Don Love, joins us to answer these questions and more! Join the Naked Gospel Disruptor Initiative! https://www.provenmen.org/disruptors/Don Love spent almost two decades as a Biblical Studies professor and during that time, he taught over 10,000 students. He holds BS in Biblical Studies and Youth Ministries, an MAR in Church Ministries, a Masters of Divinity (MDiv), a Masters of Theology (ThM), and a PhD in Biblical Theology. His desire is to teach others how to pray through things and how to discuss Biblical truths of the Kingdom of God, the Role of the Holy Spirit, Intimacy with God and Inner-healing through prayer. His most recent authored works are Pray Through It: Letting God Right Your Story and “Worship in the Gospel of John” in Biblical Worship: Theology for God's Glory (Biblical Theology for the Church). Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. Together, we pray for workers for the Kingdom of God and encourage children to consider church work vocations. Here are three easy ways you can participate in SAS: 1. Pray with your children for God to provide church workers. 2. Talk to your children about becoming church workers. 3. Thank God for the people who work in your congregation. To learn more about Set Apart to Serve, visit lcms.org/set-apart-to-serve.
On today's program, an Arizona church is fighting to continue its food pantry ministry—but city zoning regulations threaten to shut it down. We'll have details. Also, the rise in crypto currency is forcing nonprofits to consider the pros and cons of taking crypto donations. We'll take a look. And, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability announces a new leadership standard. But first, Adam Greenway is suing the Southern Baptist seminary he once led. Lawyers for Adam Greenway, who resigned as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in September 2022, alleged in a complaint filed Wednesday (March 20) that the school and the chair of its trustee board defamed Greenway, violated the terms of a non-disparagement agreement and made him “unemployable.” Greenway's attorney had previously sent the school a demand letter for $5 million to settle the dispute. The school denies any wrongdoing. FINAL THOUGHTS: Next week I'm headed to the True Charity Conference in Springfield Missouri.
