MasterClass always has great offers for an annual subscription. If you use my link, you'll get at least 15% off! Head over https://masterclass.yt.link/cFxOSGk for the current offer! Want to know how to save money by decluttering your home? The connection between clutter and finances is real, and your messy house is draining your bank account. Today, I'm breaking down why overspending and clutter go hand-in-hand, plus giving you four challenges to stop the cycle right now. Okay, real talk. When I finally got my clutter under control, I'm not being dramatic here, the financial shift was insane. And for the longest time, I didn't understand why decluttering my home also fixed my money problems. But now I get it, and I'm sharing all of it with you. This episode is different, friends. We're not just tidying up—we're tackling the uncomfortable stuff. The scarcity mindset that makes you panic-buy things "just in case." The emotional spending that leads to more clutter, which leads to more shame, which leads you right back to the store. And yeah, I'm gonna say the thing that might make you uncomfortable: if you have too much clutter in your home, you have an overconsumption problem. You're buying too much. Sorry, not sorry. Here's what we're covering: Why my messy house was keeping me broke (and how yours might be too) The "spending to save" trap that retailers use to exploit your fear How disorganization costs you money in duplicates, late fees, and wasted purchases Why the more clothes you have, the less you have to wear (it's bonkers but it's true) But here's the best part: we're body-doubling today, and I'm giving you FOUR challenges to do while you listen. Because here's the truth: clutter isn't just stuff. It's wasted money, wasted time, and wasted mental energy. And when you finally deal with it? You get all of that back. Let's break the wheel together, Clutterbugs. Your future self (and your bank account) will thank you. Want to get organized? New here? Start with our Start Here playlist — five episodes that will change how you think about motherhood. You've tried the bins. You've tried the labels. You've watched the organization reels and bought the matching containers. And somehow, within a week, everything is a mess again. Here's what nobody told you: you're not messy. You've just been trying to use an organizing system built for someone else's brain. Cas Aarssen is a professional organizer, YouTube creator, and self-described recovering super slob. After years of failing at traditional organizing methods, she discovered that there are four distinct organizing styles — and once you know yours, staying organized becomes almost effortless. She's helped millions of people transform their homes by working with their brain, not against it. What you'll learn: Why traditional organizing systems fail ADHD and visual brains — and what to do instead The one question every organizing system should answer: does it work on your absolute worst day? The four Clutterbug organizing styles and how to figure out which one you are Why out of sight truly is out of mind for visual organizers — and why that's not a flaw The golden Clutterbug rule for shared spaces that stops the nagging and resentment cold How to start with your messiest spot and let your clutter tell you what system you actually need Why hooks, big labels, and no-lid bins work better than any fancy organizing system you can buy How to have the organizing conversation with your partner without it turning into a fight Why clutter attracts clutter — and the simple fix that breaks the cycle The Lego mat that will change your life (and your kids' cleanup habits) The 4 Clutterbug organizing styles: The Butterfly — visual and macro. Needs things out in the open to remember they exist. Out of sight truly is out of mind. Loves beautiful displays, hates hidden storage. The Bee — visual and micro. Needs to see things but also loves detailed organization. Color-coded files, labeled everything, things arranged just so. The Ladybug — hidden and macro. Likes things put away out of sight but in big broad categories, not detailed systems. The hider who shoves things in a drawer to clear a surface. The Cricket — hidden and micro. Loves detailed, out-of-sight storage. The person with the color-coordinated filing cabinet who knows exactly where everything is. "True organization is meant for your absolute worst day — so that you never have to catch up." Products mentioned in this episode: Lego play mat with drawstring — spreads out as a huge play surface, pull the string and everything collects into a bag. Find on Amazon. Life changing for kids' cleanup. Wall-mounted magazine rack or gold basket organizer — gets papers and bills off flat surfaces and onto walls where visual organizers will actually see them Ikea bathroom rod system with hanging buckets — keeps bathroom products off the counter and at eye level without taking up surface space Take the free Clutterbug quiz: Find out your organizing style and get personalized tips at clutterbug.me Resources mentioned: The Clutterbug Method — Cas's new course for organizing your own home with her coaching. Hey Clutterbugs! Today we're talking about how to declutter when you're emotionally attached to everything. Your clutter is telling you stories, and most of them are lies. We have to learn the decluttering psychology behind why we keep things we don't use, love, or need—and how to finally let go of sentimental clutter, guilt, and shame. A few months ago, a 20-second clip of me telling a client "no stories" during a decluttering session went viral—millions of views, and the comments weren't all kind. But through my own journey and after years of decluttering for clients, I've discovered that we talk ourselves into keeping things by telling elaborate stories about why we might need them, why we should use them, or why letting go makes us a bad person. In this episode, I'm teaching you how to spot the toxic narratives your belongings are whispering to you—shame, identity, and scarcity—and how to rewrite the story so you can take your power back. You'll learn: The "story spotting" tool: red flag words that mean you're about to talk yourself into keeping something How to separate facts from stories (42 coffee mugs vs. "it would be wasteful to get rid of them") My personal story about Joe's grandmother's guilt-inducing sweaters and how I finally let them go Real examples from my recent NYC makeover with Chloe and Gretchen Rubin How your Clutterbug organizing style affects the stories you tell yourself And of course, there's a challenge involved: find one space where clutter is telling you a toxic story. Clear it. Then ask yourself: what is this space telling me NOW? Because clutter makes us feel small and suffocated. But space? Space makes us feel endlessly big. Hey Clutterbug! Still exhausted even after self-care? That's because it's a scam! If you're feeling frustrated, tired, lonely, and in over your head with housework, I've got you. We've all heard: “Put your own oxygen mask on first.” In an emergency, yes—absolutely. But when that metaphor becomes your whole approach to life, it can quietly teach you that survival is a solo sport. If you're overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and trying to do everything alone, this conversation will help you build healthier boundaries and stronger support systems—without guilt. Today we're unpacking the two extremes that leave so many of us burnt out and lonely: 1. giving until you're empty, and 2. protecting your peace so hard you end up isolated. The middle ground is interdependence: a place where care is shared over time—without keeping score and without one person carrying the whole load. We'll talk about the four real-life relational skills this takes, the ones no one teaches us. Plus, two practical tools to help you build towards balance: 1) Chris Guillebeau's “8th day of the week” exercise 2) The 3-3-3 method If you've been thinking: “Why am I STILL tired?” this episode is for you. Why You Keep Buying Stuff: The Reward Behind Thrifting, Yard Sales, and Impulse Buys | Clutterbug Podcast #322

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2026 50:52

Hey Clutterbugs! Decluttering, overconsumption, and dopamine: why getting stuff for free, thrifting, dumpster diving, yard sales, and “treat yourself” shopping can feel addictive. Today, we're talking about controlling the clutter we bring into our home. If you're stuck in the thrill of the hunt, impulse buying, or accepting hand-me-downs you don't need, this episode breaks down the brain science and the emotional triggers behind clutter. I'm sharing my ABCs of Clutter—the 3 ways clutter enters your home: Acquiring (free stuff), Buying (shopping for a dopamine hit), and Consenting (letting other people store things at your place). I'm talking about the real reason the hunt feels so good (anticipation dopamine vs possession dopamine), why instant gratification keeps us scrolling and spending, and how loneliness, boredom, stress, and overwhelm can push us into overconsumption. Then I'll show you how to fight back with practical “dopamine hacks” that make decluttering easier, simple boundaries that create friction before you buy, and a 7-day Stuff Hangover Detox you can do with me; it starts with identifying the emotion that starts the scroll (or the shop), unsubscribing from shopping triggers, donating one bag of “free” items, setting a container limit, getting an earned-dopamine win by clearing a surface, doing a no-buy day, and practicing urge surfing instead of shopping. Plus: an easy decluttering task you can do while you listen for fast progress with minimal regret. Hey Clutterbugs! I fall off my routines hard, and in this episode I'm getting real about why I can't follow through . . . and how to fix it. If you're trying to stop procrastinating, get organized, and actually stick to habits, this conversation will change how you start your day. I'm joined by Amy Landino (author of Good Morning, Good Life) to talk about morning routines, sleep, motivation, accountability, and follow-through, especially when you know what to do but keep renegotiating the deal with yourself. We dig into how friction derails not just your mornings but your days, and how to build tiny systems that make success inevitable. In this episode, we cover why motivation is fleeting and how to stop letting your phone (email, news, scrolling) hijack your day. And I know I talk about vision boards all the time, but what if they lead to the trick that gets you out of bed and ready for your day more excited than ever? Decluttering, organizing, and building habits that stick — today I'm talking with Gretchen Rubin (author of The Happiness Project and The Four Tendencies) about why clutter keeps coming back, how to finally follow through, and how to get your home under control for good. If you struggle to start, procrastinate, or can't maintain a tidy house, this episode will change how you see your expectations, yourself, and the systems you use. Gretchen Rubin is one of my biggest heroes. Her work changed my life when I was drowning, and in this conversation we go deep on the ideas that help you actually do the thing. Maintenance sometimes feels like the hardest part of home management, and that's what we tackle in this episode. Gretchen breaks down The Four Tendencies (Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, Rebel) and explains how she discovered this framework by noticing a simple pattern: the same person can do something effortlessly in one context and feel totally stuck in another. We talk about what it means to meet or resist outer expectations (deadlines, other people) vs inner expectations (the promises you make to yourself)—and why that difference matters so much when you're trying to declutter or keep up with everyday housework. You'll hear why I'm an Obliger (and how outer accountability helped me grow my business), how to “speak someone's language” instead of trying to force your system onto them, and why Rebels often feel trapped by routines—even the ones they choose. We also dig into something I'm obsessed with right now: the perfectionism/procrastination loop that keeps people stuck, and my approach to breaking through the roadblock so you can finally get momentum. We cover Obliger Rebellion—that moment when you've been giving and giving… and suddenly you go nuclear. If you've ever snapped, quit, cut someone off, or hit a breaking point that felt like it came out of nowhere, Gretchen's explanation will make you feel seen (and give you a better way forward). If you've ever thought, “I know what to do . . . I just can't make myself do it,” this is the episode you've been waiting for. Want to get organized? Hey Clutterbugs! Today, I'm breaking down how your clutter is HELPING you. It's why clutter keeps coming back and why you feel stuck organizing (on top of ADHD, burnout, perfectionism, and overwhelm). If you've tried every organizing system and still can't keep up, this episode will help you understand what your clutter is doing for you (other than making you feel bad about yourself). In this episode, I'm diving into teleology (don't worry, you can forget the word after, and I can't pronounce it either), which is just a fancy way of asking: What purpose is this mess serving right now? Because clutter isn't random, sometimes it's protecting you from decisions, emotions, conflict, perfectionism, or even visibility.I'll walk you through the seven most common “jobs” clutter does (like decision freezing and identity preservation), then we'll do a quick exercise to uncover what your own clutter is helping you with. Finally, I'll give you practical replacement strategies, and one 10-minute action you can do in the next 24 hours to create real momentum. If you're ready to stop the shame spiral and start using strategies that match your brain, let's go! Hey Clutterbugs! Decluttering after death, estate clean out reality, and how to deal with inherited clutter . . . today I'm sharing what it was really like to clear out my grandmother's condo. But this matters before you find yourself in the situation I did too: the same “what's important vs what's just stuff?” problem is why our homes get cluttered, our decision fatigue skyrockets, and letting go feels impossible. Two years after my grandma passed, we did the final clear-out, and the shocking part was this: we didn't know what mattered because we didn't know the stories. Everything just looked like “stuff,” and it completely paralyzed us. I'm also joined by Nick Fox, the creator behind “millennial inheritance” videos where people share the wild things families are left to triage after a loved one passes. These are important conversations to have, and I'm hoping this podcast will give you a roadmap for doing so. We dig into the philosophy behind minimalism (hint: it's not about a certain number of plates), the Becker Method for decluttering with momentum, and what to do when you're stuck in guilt about donating, recycling, or throwing things away.We also talk about the “just-in-case” mindset, why keeping trash in your house doesn't save it from the landfill, and the categories almost everyone has too much of—hello duplicates and clothes! We're using January as a container and focusing on one small doable decision that you can repeat—because that's how real change sticks. I'm also introducing what I'm calling the Boss Rule. If you have to negotiate with an item—debate it, justify it, imagine a future version of you who finally fixes it, paints it, returns it, uses it, or finds the “perfect system”—that item is breaking the rule. You're the CEO of your home. Hey Clutterbugs! Decluttering, organizing, and mindset shifts are the real foundation of a tidy home—and I'm getting brutally honest about all three today. I'm sharing 46 life lessons that will help you get organized, stop feeling behind, and make decisions faster (without trying to become a whole new person). It's my birthday, I did the math (yes, I'm actually 46), and I'm celebrating by handing you the stuff I wish I knew sooner—about confidence, perfectionism, money, boundaries, happiness, and why everything you own is work. We talk about how “good enough” beats perfect, why you can't plan your way into progress, how tiny consistent steps matter more than big dramatic overhauls, and the truth nobody wants to hear: you probably won't miss most of what you declutter—but you will regret what clutter has cost you.   #happybirthday #gettingolder #wisdom #organization #decluttering #lifelessons #finances #planning #selfhelp   Website: http://www.clutterbug.me YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@clutterbug TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@clutterbug_me Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clutterbug_me/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Clutterbug.Me/

Hey Clutterbugs!  Today is about decluttering tips and home organization systems to match your current season of life. If your life has changed but your home hasn't, you're probably feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and tempted to shop for “solutions” instead of update your systems. We're going to talk about why your home isn't a museum—it's a living organism that has to evolve as you do. I walk you through the seasons of life (solo starter, early family/merging households, “city girl” single-income leveling up, school-age chaos, career sprint/burnout prevention, boomerang kids, empty nest feelings, and downsizing) and the exact shifts your home needs in each stage. We'll cover how to identify your current “dominant energy,” how to declutter what no longer fits your life now, and how to build simple, low-friction systems so your home stops feeling like a part-time job. You'll also hear my real talk on scarcity mindset, why “filling the space” too fast can lead to debt and clutter, how container limits protect your budget, and why every item you let go of gives you something you can't buy: time. Plus, I'll challenge you to declutter two guest-notice zones (bathroom + kitchen) so you can feel proud of your space immediately—especially with the holidays coming.   #clutterbug #podcast #emptynest #starterhouse #decluttering #phasesoflife #seasonsoflife #planning #future   Website: http://www.clutterbug.me YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@clutterbug TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@clutterbug_me Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clutterbug_me/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Clutterbug.Me/

Perfectionism is a trap, and today we're talking about how letting go of it can transform your productivity, time management, and overall happiness. Why? Because embracing 'average'—yes, average—is actually the secret to freeing up your time, energy, and mental bandwidth for the things that really matter. I know, I know, the word 'average' doesn't sound appealing. Nobody wants to feel mediocre, right? But here's the truth—most of us waste so much energy trying to be ‘perfect' at things that don't actually move the needle forward in life. And when we focus on perfection, we burn ourselves out and have nothing left for the stuff that truly makes life extraordinary. In this episode, I'll share why embracing 'good enough' in the areas that don't matter—like household chores, decluttering, or even certain work tasks—can give you more time to focus on what does matter. I'll also explain how taking shortcuts, like my ‘Do It Shitty' method, can actually lead to more success, not less. Whether it's cleaning your house, improving your career, or strengthening your relationships, I'll show you where you can cut corners, save time, and still get things done without the stress of perfectionism holding you back.   #clutterbug #podcast #mondaymotivation #motivation #mindsestshift #doitshitty   Website: http://www.clutterbug.me YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@clutterbug TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@clutterbug_me Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clutterbug_me/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Clutterbug.Me/

If you've ever looked at your life and thought, “How did I end up here — and where the heck are my shoes?” — this episode is for you. Whether you're stuck in a shame spiral over clutter, afraid to start because you might fail (again), or dreaming of a better life but don't know how to take that first step… you are so not alone. You'll hear the power of finding your people, discovering your style, and finally realizing that you're not messy — you just organize differently. ✨ We chat about: What it's really like to fail (a lot) and keep going anyway The chaotic backstory behind Clutterbug (and how it almost didn't happen) Vision boards, viral videos, and how to manifest your dream life — one basket at a time How “It's not a cat” became a clutter mantra (and a t-shirt!) What to keep when you're living in a “temporary but forever” space Why your kids don't think you're cool — even if you're a YouTuber The life-changing magic of saying “I deserve this” — and meaning it
