If you've listened to our most recent episode of Talking Taiwan, you'll know that the sixty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women or CSW69 is now taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York. It began on March 10th and runs until March 21st. Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/taiwan-on-the-margins-of-csw-69-celebrating-womens-resilience-progress-at-taiwan-main-stage-ep-307/ On March 12th the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO-NY) hosted an event called “Taiwan Main Stage: Celebrating Women's Resilience & Progress on the margins of CSW 69.” This smartly worded event title is undoubtedly a soft reference the fact that Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, and therefore on the margins of CSW69. We were there at TECO-NY's fully packed event on the 12th where we heard from Po-Chun Sophiyah Liu and Chia-Hui Lu. Sophiyah is Ambassador-at-Large for Sports Diplomacy of Taiwan, and she is Taiwan's first female umpire. Chia-Hui Lu is a classical musician, cross disciplinary artist and an associate professor at National Taiwan University of Arts. Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: · How Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations · Sophiyah Liu's remarks at TECO-NY's event called “Taiwan Main Stage: Celebrating Women's Resilience & Progress on the margins of CSW 69” · How the Global Sports Mentoring Program that set Sophiyah on the path to sports diplomacy · How when Sophiyah won the IOC and UN Women: Women and Sport World trophy in 2019, a special arrangement was made for her to enter the UN building to receive the award · When Sophiyah was invited to attend the UN Global Sport Program working group which met in a conference room in the United Nations building but when it came time to attend the meeting, she was told she couldn't enter the UN building because she has a passport from Taiwan · Sophiyah's thoughts on the controversy over questions about the gender eligibility of female boxer Lin Yu-ting at the Paris Olympics · Sophiyah's thoughts on gender eligibility testing in sports · Chia-Hui Lu's remarks at TECO-NY's event called “Taiwan Main Stage: Celebrating Women's Resilience & Progress on the margins of CSW 69 · The technology, AI training and experimentation involved in creating the real-time music recognition system that captures melodies from Chia-Hui's piano playing and transforms it into a surreal visual story · The mission and past projects of the Egret Cultural and Education Foundation · How the Egret Cultural and Education Foundation's cross art productions combine theater, music, dance, technology, culture, and history · How the Egret Cultural and Education Foundation was published books about Taiwan's history, nature, music, and art Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/taiwan-on-the-margins-of-csw-69-celebrating-womens-resilience-progress-at-taiwan-main-stage-ep-307/
Send us a textA seasoned diplomat with a wealth of experience in international relations, Ya-Ping (Abby) Lee has been the Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Tel Aviv since January 2022, where she leads the mission in promoting Taiwan-Israel relations across a wide range of sectors, including consular services, economic and commercial affairs, and cultural exchange. Since October 7th, she's been outspoken in her support and solidarity with the Israeli people as natural democratic allies against authoritarian threats. Eylon sits down with the Taiwanese representative to discuss the key to saving these two democracies in the face of existential threats.Co-Creator and Host - Eylon LevyCo-Creator and Creative Director - Guy RossExecutive Producer - Asher Westropp-EvansDirector - Lotem SegevGraphics - Thomas GirschEditor/Assistant Director - Benny GoldmanStay up to date at:https://www.stateofanationpodcast.com/X: https://twitter.com/stateofapodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/stateofapod/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... Over the past three years, several seemingly frozen conflicts (Sudan, Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, Armenia/Azerbaijan, etc) have broke out into hot conflicts that are challenging the current international order. There is, however, one of the longest standing potential flashpoints that has not entered the fray, but is listed as one issue that could embroil the world. That is the unresolved issue of cross-strait relations between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC), also known as the island of Taiwan. For more than seventy years, the question of who controls Taiwan has simmered just under the surface of geopolitical tensions, as the PRC continues to claim control of Taiwan, while recognizing that reunification is necessary (the juxtaposition here is insightful). The ROC continues to maintain that the political status of Taiwan can only be decided by the people of Taiwan, who currently support maintaining the status quo (having their own democracy, while not openly trying to claim full independence). In this episode we speak with Director General Charles Liao of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Boston. As the US and Taiwan do not maintain official relations, they do not maintain an embassy or series of consulates throughout the US, so these offices act as the representatives of the ROC in the US. Listen to gain insights into the current state of cross-strait relations and how the ROC views their relationship with the PRC. This becomes increasingly important as the PRC continues to ramp up military drills surrounding Taiwan, increasing the chances for a miscalculation or accident that can lead to all out war. In an age where military might has returned to the global stage as a way to resolve conflicts, the question of Taiwan and how to encourage a diplomatic resolution remains one of the most important of the day.As mentioned in the podcast introduction, if you are interested in learning more about what foreign policy might look like as the United States enters a second term for President Trump, please watch our conversation with Dan Negrea of the Atlantic Council and co-Author of "We Win, They Lose: Republican Foreign Policy and the New Cold War". Wallace Chow, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines, handed over a bag of rice printed with a Republic of China (Taiwan) flag and "Love from Taiwan" to Philippine officials during the ceremony. Chow also says the Taiwan Technical Mission in the Philippines will soon begin projects in Isabela and Cagayan provinces in northeastern Luzon to increase rice production, in a bid to ensure (確保) no one will suffer from hunger when the Southeast Asian country is hit by natural disasters in the future. Philippine officials say their country appreciates the generosity of Taiwan for the donation, which will go a long way in easing the burden of victims and the poorest in the communities. Dario Klein & Riatsu – Radler EP (Vinyl Release) Originals from Cologne and Mumbai, Remixes from Berlin and Hamburg What happens when two artists from completely different musical worlds meet across continents? The answer is provided by Cologne-based live act and DJ Dario Klein, along with ambient sound artist Riatsu from Mumbai. The two musicians met in 2022 as part of an artist exchange organized by the Cultural Office of the City of Cologne and the Goethe-Institut Mumbai. Their musical journey led them from live performances and collaborative studio sessions in India and Germany to the release of their debut Radler EP on vinyl. The original tracks "Radler" and "Fading Light" capture the unforgettable moments of their collaboration in two danceable and driving tracks. The EP is rounded off by remixes from Überhaupt & Außerdem from Berlin and Metatext from Hamburg. The result: an EP that has grown in clubs and festivals and matured in the studio. A special thanks goes to the Cultural Office of the City of Cologne, which significantly supported and facilitated this project. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Taiwan donates US$50,000 to flood-hit Brazil Taiwan's government recently donated 50 thousand NT to Brazil to help the country cope (應付) with devastating floods. The floods have wreaked havoc across nearly 90 percent of municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Over 300 thousand homes were damaged, as well as roads, bridges and a hydroelectric plant. Local media reports say the death toll has risen to 126, and 141 are missing. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sao Paulo said the overseas Taiwanese community in Brazil have delivered essential supplies to disaster areas. The office hopes all victims can return to normal life as soon as possible. Brazilian officials said they're very grateful to Taiwan for providing immediate assistance. They say the people of the state will not forget the good deed. It said pet-owning passengers can choose from 16 local service providers listed on the website of the City's Transportation Bureau. And many drivers are pet owners themselves. Transport officials said passengers are required to place their pets in a cage before boarding. But officials caution that those who choose non-traditional ones with various sizes and functions should pay attention to how they charge. Afghanistan Flash Floods Leave Dead and Missing Flash floods in northern Afghanistan sweep away livelihoods (生計), leaving hundreds dead and missing AP correspodnent Karen Chammas reports on floods in Afghanistan. Russia Putin Proposes Removing Defense Minister Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed removing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu from his post. Putin nominated First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov for the role. The change comes weeks after a Russian deputy defense minister in charge of military construction projects, was jailed pending an investigation and trial on charges of bribery (受賄). In line with Russian law, the entire Russian cabinet resigned on Tuesday when Putin began his fifth presidential term at a Kremlin inauguration. The announcement came as Ukrainian officials say thousands more civilians have fled Russia's renewed ground offensive in Ukraine's northeast. The attacks have targeted towns and villages with a barrage of artillery and mortar shelling. The intense battles have forced at least one Ukrainian unit to withdraw in the Kharkiv region. This is a loss of more land to Russian forces across less defended settlements in the so-called contested gray zone along the Russian border. Prince Harry Meghan Visit Nigeria Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are visiting Lagos, Nigeria. They are promoting mental health for soldiers and empowering young people. The couple visited a local charity using sports to empower young people.
