Daniel, in a real pinch me moment, welcomes someone whose work has contributed to some of the most beloved blockbusters the last 25 years including all eight of the Harry Potter films. David Holmes was the stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe across the Harry Potter films, and grew up on those film sets alongside some of the most talented cast and crew members of our generation. His stunt work is also featured in the films “Lost in Space” which starred Matt LeBlanc of Friends fame, fantasy films “Inkheart” and “The Golden Compass” as well as so many others. In January 2009, David broke his neck in an accident while carrying a stunt test for a sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. After being left paralyzed, David has bravely told his story in the HBO documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, produced by fellow Potter-alumni and friend Daniel Radcliffe. The documentary went on to be nominated for an Emmy and a BAFTA, and David is now set to release a memoir of the same name chronicling his years working on the Potter films and life after being left disabled. He is also the host of the podcast Cunning Stunts. On todays episode David will be chatting about his experiences on the set of Harry Potter, the nature of a career as a stunt performer, and the way in which he has used art as a way to move through the dark times in life and how it effects his outlook. Plus he'll be chatting about his memoir "David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived" and what he'd like to see from the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. All of this & more on today's episode of "Creatively Me". We head to Australia for a couple of VERY fun stuntman-focused films that both star the magnetic and truly daring Grant Page and both are directed by show-favorite Brian Trenchard-Smith. We start off with 1976's Death Cheaters which co-stars John Hargreaves as Page's partner who are recruited to help the government deal with a group of bad guys by using their stunt-focused skills. It is a blast and has some incredible stunt segments but is also really well written and paced. We follow that up with Stunt Rock from 1978 which has Page coming to America to help the band Sorcery with their live stage shows. It's full of the band's live performances and plenty of amazing stunts. We recommend both! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. Ryan and Matt "Small Favor" Amberg are back and blathering about Comic-Con trailers, Star Trek Beyond, Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Kill Command, The Mighty Ducks 2, Music of the Heart, Batman v Superman... EXTENDED!, Mr. Right, Edge of Tomorrow, and Race before it's [45 minutes and] on to time spent with GTA Online's Cunning Stunts, Overwatch, and Pokemon Go. Lesser men would stop here, and maybe we technically did, but we also kept talking about We Happy Few, Uno doodles, No Man's Sky, and Apple Watch RPG, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, Destiny Rise of Iron, Gears of War 4: Fenix Rising (not the title), The Walking Dead (game and show!), LEGO Dimensions season 2, Sonic (the Hedgehog), the happily fabricated mini-console wars, Injustice 2, Quake Champions, Rocket League's Rocket Please (sure why not), and the Nintendo NX!
Ryan and Matt "MmmBop" Amberg share words about Green Room, Stranger Things, Cursed, Allegiant, and O.J. Made in America before it's on to time spent with AaAaAA!!! A Reckless Disregard for Gravity, Pac-Man 256, GTA Online's Cunning Stunts update, Pokemon Go shoot somebody I guess, Mortal Kombat X DLC, LEGO Dimensions' Midway Arcade level pack, and... Overwatch! So why not talk about Overwatch's new character while we're at it, Batman video games, Star Wars Battlefront news, What We Learned from EVO 2016, Dead Re-Rising again some more, Rock Band 4 Rivals details, Xbox One S release date, and that mini NES that your mom posted about.
As mentioned by Rich on last week's show, the TA Podcast is now being recorded weekly! For you, the listener, it means you get at least twice the number of shows per month, and for us it means we can talk about more time sensitive news items and also forces us to actually play some games. On this week's show we talked about the new free to play title, HAWKEN, my thoughts on Inside, Jack's ongoing search for a decent Certified item in Rocket League, the announcement that all future Microsoft published games would be coming to Play Anywhere (and their subsequent backtrack, GTA V's new "Cunning Stunts" update, this year's Bean Dive and next week's new releases.
Welcome to episode 81 of Love that Album podcast. This month, I decided to take a break from the podcast (slackarse that I am), but there is no way I would deprive both the listeners of an episode- nosiree Bob. I called in Eric Reanimator (host of LTA: The Compilation Series) and Tim Merrill (my co host at See Hear podcast) to present some music discussion for you….and they’ve delivered the goods. First up, they discuss The Flesh Eaters’ “A Minute To Pray A Second To Die” from 1981. This features a lineup of LA roots rock royalty with members of the Blasters, X and (yet to join) Los Lobos. The final result is still something leaner and rawer than any of those outfits. Then the guys go for a real curiousity. The Minneapolis band Cows and their album “Cunning Stunts” comes under the guys’ gaze. A noise-rock band with a bugle and an interpretation of the theme from Midnight Cowboy sure as hell has my attention. I want to thank Eric and Tim for presenting a fantastic episode which introduced me to some good music and interesting discussion. I hope you dig it. You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum If you enjoy what you hear, please tell a friend or ten to tune in.
Steve & Jeffers meet to discuss the Goodies' series 5 non-classic 'Cunning Stunts' and demonstrate Graeme's long-lost crisis cookery.
Built to Play is amping up the disappointment, as we take on failure. That's a failure to play and a failure to learn, starting with why play video games in the first place. From Takeshi's Challenge. We suck at video games, as a species. Yes, some of us are amazing at Street Fighter, and that Chinese team won five million dollars in Dota 2, but on average most of us lose more than we succeed. In Call of Duty, you likely failed more levels than you won. In Super Meat Boy, people come close to throwing their controllers across the room in frustration. Rage-quitting is a word most players recognize and have experienced. So why do we play? Download here. Subscribe on iTunes.Subscribe on Stitcher. Jesper Juul, author of the Art of Failure: An Essay on the Pain of Playing Video Games, says that it comes down enjoying the game's basis, while being able to dismiss it. It's just a game after all. But that's not entirely true either. If people really didn't care about video games, he explains, they wouldn't groan when they lose, or throw the controller across the room after a bad run in Dark Souls. To some extent we want to know that we might lose in a game, if only to prove that we're better than it. It's a matter of how much failure we're willing to take. Jesper tells us all about being a sore loser in Starcraft, why the New York Post thinks soccer is a dumb sport, and how games rarely ask us to fail. Starts at 26:30. Courtesy Actual Sunlight We may lose a lot in video games, but video games rarely give us a good reason to fail. Screwing up in a video game feels like a glitch in the process. Mario saves the princess, even if you jumped into that Goomba, or fell off the cliff. BJ Blazkowicz blows up Hitler in Wolfenstein, regardless if a Nazi shoots you five minutes into the game. The player messed up. The character saves the day. Sometimes, there are exceptions. In Shadow of the Colossus, the hero's victory turns out to be for nought, and he turns out to be the true monster. But pyrrhic victories are few and far between, and outright failures are awkward to create. When the player beats the bad guy, only to discover the world's still ending, it rarely feels right. But that's not to say people haven't tried. _Actual Sunlight_is about Evan Winters, a 30-ish year old man working in communications. Evan has depression, and continually makes terrible choices. He can't help himself a lot of the time, and ends up stuck in a rut. In Actual Sunlight, you're forced to encounter his decisions, and then succumb to his inability to correct his own mistakes. Evan is in many ways, a failure. Actual Sunlight's designer, Will O'Neill, joins us to talk about how games treat characters who are stuck in their ways, and aren't world-saving heroes. Will tells us about Actual Sunlight's expression of realism, his own experience with loss and depression, and why there's still hope underneath it all. Check in 40:20. **Actual Sunlight is available on Steam and on its website. ** Cardinal Rule restaurant in Parkdale, Toronto back in 2012. But the future isn't so dim, so long as you're not producer Arman Aghbali at Trivia Night. Our producer is terrible at trivia. He confuses Dirty Dancing with Footloose. He thought the West Wing was about a hospital. He knows David Bowie as the cool science guy from The Prestige. So he went to meet up with some experts, and watched them nearly lose the whole game. But some golden VHS tapes are just worth fighting for. Russel Harder hosts a feisty game of trivia at Toronto's Cardinal Rule every Wednesday night, and the Cunning Stunts were on a winning streak when Arman dropped in. **This short doc was made back in February for a Ryerson University documentary course. It's still fun and about games, so we thought we'd share it with you. Today on the Trivia Club podcast our host Russel Harder does a passable (to him, at least) impersonation of Ira Glass (with a lot of love and respect) to introduce a short radio doc courtesy of Arman Aghbali, a Ryerson journalism student who stopped by Trivia Club @ Cardinal Rule on January 29th, 2014. Enjoy a four-minute look inside of a two and a half hour long event at Trivia Club, sitting beside then 10x Golden VHS winners, The Cunning Stunts! Yes, the intro and outro may be tongue-in-cheek, but the journalism is very real. Keeping you up to date on Toronto's premiere trivia game show, the Trivia Club podcast is hosted by Russel Harder (not Ira Glass). Not only is Trivia Club a podcast that will tease the mind, it's also an interview podcast, a conversational podcast, a review podcast... and a life podcast.
