The pioneer. Most famously one of West Bromwich Albion's so-called Three Degrees Brendon was part of the Windrush generation who came to the United Kingdom to work and to live but found a country that was often inhospitable and unaccepting. He had never played football when he arrived here but he quickly developed as a talent which resulted in a scholarship at Arsenal and ultimately resulted in him becoming Arsenal's first black player. It's his time at West Brom, and the battles that he, and the much missed Cyrille Regis and Laurie Cunningham, fought that stand him out as a pioneer and a hero to us at B5 Consultancy. He speaks beautifully and modestly about his incredible life experiences and we are honoured to have had him as a guest on the pod. This episode has been produced in partnership with our good friends and sponsors at Sports Fusion. Former Cobblers forward and reserve team manager Garry Thompson joins us to talk about his long career and being part of the "Birmingham mafia" that turned the club around under Ian Atkins in the late 90's.Dig beneath the surface on Thompson's career and he has some brilliant stories from playing at Jimmy Hill's Coventry, the England U -21's to playing with the great Cyrille Regis at West Brom and Ian Wright at Crystal Palace. Thompson scored a brace for Aston Villa in the Derby at Birmingham, a great moment for the childhood Villa fan.Tommo offers some interesting insight into the Northampton dressing room under Ian Atkins with the likes of John Frain, Ian Clarkson, David Rennie and John Gayle, all players with a connection to the Birmingham football scene. The story about the dust up between big John Gayle and Carl Heggs is one to sit back and laugh along with. Tommo talks about his friend "Akkers" management style and the many ups and couple of downs of the Atkins years."Stand on" is a Birmingham expression for standing up for yourself and that is what Thompson and his team mates brought to the Cobblers, building a team that went to Wembley twice in the playoffs. One of our favourite podcasts so far from an important player who didn't court attention but played with real pride. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Chaos reigns this week, as Josh is absent due to a potentially mortal illness. In his absence, Alex and Nathan depress about a damaging loss to Southampton, reflect on some emotional tributes to Cyrille Regis and look ahead to a daunting trip to Chelsea.
This week I’m joined by a wide variety of guests from around the world to help cover a range of topics related to the sport of football and the Southampton Football Club. First up I spoke with Andrew Coulton, a Baggies fan originally from Burton-on-Trent but now living in New Hampshire in the USA, about our most recent match against West Brom, his history with the club, coaching a former Saint, writing, the legacy left by Cyrille Regis, and more. We easily could have spent more than a full episode talking about all of it, but we kept it to a reasonable time given we still had more to cover. Andy is a passionate, caring, and knowledgeable man who understands the connection fans share and what makes the relationship between us and the football so special. I am truly grateful for the time I was able to spend with him. The link to one of his recent articles on Cyrille Regis is below. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it! As we have done previously, after the transfer window closes, it’s nice to get a range opinions on what’s gone on at the club. So, I took some calls from fans around the world and asked for their opinions on the window, the current state of the club, and what needs to change moving forward. I was overwhelmed with the number of people willing to call in to talk, but I was only able to fit 5 interviews on the show. I appreciate everyone's willingness to chat and share their time with me. The links to the Twitter handles of each caller, along with Andy and his article, are directly below. I hope you enjoy the episode and thank you for listening! Following the sad news this week that Cyrille Regis passed away at the age of 59, Caroline Barker speaks to his nephew Jason Roberts about the inspiring role Cyrille had on many lives but also how he shaped his own footballing career. Jason pays tribute to his hero and how he will remember Cyrille. On 14th February 2013, Reeva Steenkamp was killed by her boyfriend, the once idolised Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorious. At the time, he was sentenced to six years. A term prosecutors argued was shockingly light. Just under three weeks ago, the South African court increased Pistorius's jail sentence to 13 years and 5 months - a move Reeva's family welcomed. On the day she died, Reeva was due to give a talk at a school on violence against women and children - this was an area she was passionate about. So much so, in 2015 her mother June Steenkamp launched the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp foundation to raise awareness of abuse against women and children not only in South Africa, but around the world. We hear from June Steenkamp on how life has never been quite the same since that tragic day. Bilal Fawaz is 29 years old, he has represented England six times and has the London middleweight title to his name but now he faces deportation back to Nigeria by the home office. Bilal explained to the BBC’s Azi Farni who went to meet him that he feels lost, like he’s trapped in prison on a dog leash. He believes without boxing, he would not be alive and how he has had to cope from a young age without parental guidance as his mother died when he was eight and he has never known his father. Levi Siver has reached incredible heights in more ways than one which no other person has ever achieved. The 37 year old professional windsurfer became the first person to ever windsurf down a snowy mountain in Japan, braving temperatures as low as -13 degrees. Caroline Barker speaks to the so called, King of Style to see where this latest inspiration came from. Lisa Blair completed the epic Sydney to Hobart journey within three days. It was her third time she had managed to complete such a feat but it was the first time in 16 years an all-female crew contested Australia's longest ocean race. It capped off a momentous year for the Australian sailor, who became the first woman to circumnavigate the Antarctic in July which took a gruelling 184 days. She tells Caroline Barker how she managed to achieve all of this and how her next goal is to encourage more women to follow her footsteps and take up sailing.
Matthew Bannister on Surgeon Captain Rick Jolly, the navy doctor who set up a makeshift field hospital during the Falklands War to treat both British and Argentine casualties. Dolores O'Riordan, lead singer of the Irish band the Cranberries who sold forty million albums. Cyrille Regis, the West Brom and England striker who experienced racism from fans in the 1980s. Jenny Joseph who wrote Britain's best loved post war poem "Warning" Peter Wyngarde the actor who played the TV detective Jason King and partly inspired the Austin Powers films.
As usual, Sherryl and Jan commentate on all the latest news articles and then some… This episode, they say farewell to football icon; Cyrille Regis, question the parenting skills of those raising the young Black boy that recently become the subject of the H&M fiasco and talk about whether increasing stop and search powers in light of more stabbings in London, is the way forward. Seal fires shots at Oprah then feels some heat himself after crazy allegations are made by an old neighbour of his. Apparently Coco Austin paved the way for ‘thick girls’ – they talk about that and Ginuwine was reminded of his ‘blackness’ when flirting in the CBB house, took a very awkward turn for the worse. All this and loads of other bits including why research is going in to understanding the importance of stimulating the prostate gland and intense orgasms in men… Yes…you read right! The unexpected death of Cyrille Regis at the age of 59 unleashed tributes from the world of British football and campaigners for equality. He plied his trade at a time when black professional footballers were rare and racial abuse from the terraces was prevalent. In his pomp, he scored goals of savage beauty. Off the field his grace was legendary.

This week the panel pay tribute to the late, great Cyrille Regis. A top-class centre forward on the pitch, and a pioneer off it, we reflect back on what Cyrille meant to us as younger members of the Albion community. Also this week, Josh, Alex and Nathan finally have a Premier League victory to discuss, plus we examine a potentially tough trip to Everton on Saturday. Welcome along!
A female football fan tells us what it was like when her dream of watching her favourite team in the flesh came true. Fathers teaching their young daughters about football tactics, women attending stadia without guardians and, later in 2018, being allowed to drive. Is football heralding a new era in the Kingdom? In the week that Spartak Moscow describe three of their black players as “chocolates” in a joke, the Nigeria striker, Peter Odemwingie, tells us there’s no racism in Russia. Odemwingie is half-Russian, and played there for three years, but he says the amount of black players in the Russian Premier League proves that Russia is a welcoming country. We pay tribute to Cyrille Regis, who overcame fierce racism to be regarded as a hero by fans of all English clubs. We hear about how John Aldridge etched his name into the history of Real Sociedad, and the former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin calls on Arsenal fans to keep faith with Arsene Wenger. Legendary footballer Cyrille Regis passed away last night at the age of 59. Six months ago, in July 2017, I had the opportunity to speak to Cyrille about his life. From moving from French Guiana to London at the age of five, to preserving through poverty, racism in football and the loss of his best friend and ex-teammate Laurie Cunningham. Regis reflects on it all. He's one of a kind, a man who inspired thousands of young black British footballers. He played the game and lived life with a smile on his face. In this episode, celebrate his life. We can all learn from him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. RIP

In the late 1970s, three black West Bromwich Albion players revolutionised English football. Laurie Cunningham, Brendon Batson and Cyrille Regis had to face racist abuse, but won many fans thanks to their attacking flair. The three footballers even earned the affectionate nickname The Three Degrees, after a famous pop group of the time. The programme is a Whistledown Production and was first broadcast in 2012.
