American comic book artist
POPULARITY
Dan Brereton is, simply put, a terrific artist. Inspired by some of the early painters drawn to comic book work in the early 90s, Dan brought an entirely new look to Superman and Batman, Robin, and Batgirl, to name a few. He wrote and painted his own creator-owned team called The Nocturnals and continues to stun with his unique, inimitable style. includes excerpt of "Atomic" by Blondie Join our Patreon Gang! https://www.patreon.com/randomactsofcomicspodcast
Matt here, and I am going to be writing in the first person for this one. When I started this podcast, I don't know what I was expecting. Will and I had been writing the BatChat column for a while. Dan Grote and I had been recording the ComicsXF Interview Podcast (then WMQ&A) for quite a bit longer. I just wanted to talk Batman some more. I didn't know if it would work, and if it did if it would last. And here we are, ranking story 400. I just want to thank everyone for listening, out Patreon backers for backing, and Will and my friends and partners for putting up with all this chatting about Bat. We're going back to some anthology series this week, a favorite topic for us, with a collection of Batman: Black and White stories, a Legends of the Dark Knight from James Robinson (a favorite of mine) and Dan Brereton (a favorite of Will's) and a Secret Origins with some truly excellent creators. Batman: Black & White- The Gotham Knights Stories V.1 (Batman: Black & White Vol.2 TPB) Playground (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight # 114) Original Sins (Secret Origins V.2 Special # 1) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

Dan Brereton is an artists' artist. Skilled as much with a paint brush as a pencil, he broke onto the comics scene via Eclipse Comics and the Black Terror limited series. He then hooked up with DC, where he brought his painterly style to titles like Batman: Thrillkiller, Superman and Batman: Legends of the World's Finest, and JLA: Seven Caskets. He's perhaps best known for his own series, The Nocturnals, a team book that originally started at Malibu Comics. Dan's work has appeared outside of comics as well, including TV shows, video games, and album covers, most notably for Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe. For all Dan's sites and info check out his link tree HERE.__________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. On Tuesday, January 11, 1972, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER terrified and delighted audiences on ABC. The TV movie — written by horror legend Richard Matheson (I Am Legend) and based on an unpublished novel by Jeff Rice — was the highest-rated TV movie in U.S. history. It subsequently spawned both a second TV movie, THE NIGHT STRANGLER, and a cult TV series that ran for just one season, but inspired a generation of storytellers, notably including X-Files creator Chris Carter. In 2022, Moonstone Books will celebrate this pop culture milestone with a Kickstarter campaign for KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL, edited by James Aquilone (Classic Monsters Unleashed). This all-new, 100+ page, full-color graphic novel will feature 10 startling stories chronicling the life of monster-hunting reporter Carl Kolchak. The stories are written by such master storytellers as Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia), Kim Newman (Anno Dracula), Peter David (The Incredible Hulk), and Jonathan Maberry (V-Wars) and illustrated by such amazing artists as Colton Worley (The Shadow), Warwick Johnson-Cadwell (Mr. Higgins Comes Home), J.K. Woodward (Star Trek), and Paul McCaffrey (Anno Dracula). THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL features a cover by Colton Worley, as well a cover by Jerry Ordway (The Power of Shazam!). KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL also includes an introduction by Richard Christian Matheson, the bestselling horror author/screenwriter/producer and son of THE NIGHT STRANGLER and THE NIGHT STRANGLER writer Richard Matheson, an essay on the 50th anniversary by Mark Dawidziak, the author of The Nightstalker Companion, and a retrospective of Moonstone Book's Kolchak publication history by publisher Joe Gentile. The KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL ANTHOLOGY will be available in limited-edition softcover and hardcover editions, both with variant covers. In addition Moonstone Books is creating a special 40-page standalone comic for the Kickstarter, featuring the story "Satanic Panic '88," written by James Aquilone and illustrated by Colton Worley, featuring a cover by Dan Brereton. “It's been half a century since Carl Kolchak made his first appearance on TV and it seems the fandom for the character is stronger than ever,” said editor James Aquilone. “I wanted to create something very special for the anniversary: a look at the life of my favorite monster hunter, from his childhood to his last case…the ultimate Kolchak story, full of creatures, frights, and the reporter's iconic wit.” "Carl Kolchak is one of the great horror genre characters of the 1970s,” said Kim Newman. “KOLCHAK changed my life,” said Killadelphia writer Rodney Barnes. “The story we're telling brings the character into some wholly unexpected places and it's a genuine thrill to be a part of this incredible anthology.” More contributors will be announced in the coming months. THE BATTLE OF THE BADASSES IS BACK! JAMES, GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, bring back a time honored MONSTER PARTY favorite! It's a classic school yard game, turned nerd podcast gold, and it's called... WHO WOULD WIN? VOL 5: A NEW BEGINNING!!! In case you never listened to any of our past WHO WOULD WIN? episodes (and if you haven't...really?), the concept is pretty simple. Two fictional characters from the world of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy, walk into a room...and only one leaves. Of course, if it's two giant monsters fighting each other, imagine an extremely large room. To say that the guest we got for this episode was excited about the topic, would be the understatement of the century. He's a five-time EISNER AWARD NOMINATED comic book artist and writer, who has quite the knack for picking a fight. Please welcome, for the first time on MONSTER PARTY... DAN BRERETON! Please send all complaints to: The Elders Of The Internet. Let the ass-kicking comence!

It is so much fun to be able to bring one of our favorite creators onto the show to talk comics or movies or even the Hero Initiative. It's even more fun when we can talk about all three of those things with a favorite creator. Such is the case this week as the guys sit down with Dan Brereton. See, for more than 20 years, Cullen has been a huge fan of Dan's work, going back to his original Nocturnals series. Since then, we have seen his work on Thrillkiller, Legends of the Dark Knight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and so many more books. Along the way, Dan became a regular contributor the Hero Initiative's 100 Cover projects. Tonight, Dan will be in Portland at a special screening of the 1982 movie John Carpenter's The Thing in 70mm. Following the showing, Dan and other artists will be signing The Thing: Artbook, which features 375 images inspired by the movie. If you can't make the showing, and it is sold out, then you can meet Dan tomorrow at Excalibur Comics in Portland from 12-3 PM. Following our talk with Dan, we take a look at the recent New York Comic Con, which turned out to be a rough weekend for Marvel without it being entirely their fault. We also review some upcoming appearances, including the Free State Comicon (October 21) and the Kansas City Comic Con (November 10-12). We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. This time around the Beards talk with comic illustrator, writer and creator Dan Brereton, the driving force behind The Nocturnals, The Psycho and Giantkiller and an accomplished painter who's worked on The Punisher, Batman and many other Marvel and DC titles. Naturally, we talk pop culture and listen to the accusations and defenses between Dan and Chris!
