This week on Yes But Why, I talk to Canadian improviser and film actor, VJ Delos-Reyes. VJ Delos-Reyes is an improviser and comedy teacher from Vancouver. Up until recently, VJ was performing at Vancouver Theater Sports, coaching improv troupes, and acting in films and television. In our conversation, VJ talks about all the different jobs in improv comedy that he has had throughout his life. From performing improv all over Vancouver to coaching a high school improv troupe to win the Canadian Improv Games, VJ’s love for improv has kept him steady making theater for the past 25 years. VJ is a positive and kindhearted soul. He was really nice to talk to. We had a lot in common. We talk about balancing family life with performing and teaching and having a day job. We talk about VJ’s recent announcement to his improv community that he’s decided to retire from Vancouver Theater Sports. Like many of us, the Covid shutdown has given him the opportunity to refocus on his home life. Still, VJ is a creative soul. We talk about how he has been investigating new and different styles of theater and performance. VJ talks about being inspired by Dan O’Connor to do dramatic improv. He tells me how he watched Middleditch & Schwartz on Netflix and learned how to do better audience interaction. This is not the last we’ve heard from VJ Delos-Reyes. But he is on hiatus. BRB. I’m glad I got to talk to him before he went underground. Support VJ Delos-Reyes by sharing this video of him dancing. Everyone in your whole family needs to see it right now. Dan O’Connor, retail expert and executive-in-residence with the HBS Managing the Future of Work project, traces the evolution of retail from the corner store through big-box, e-commerce, and the emergence of omni-faceted digital platforms. What are the implications for employers and employees throughout the sector? Retail accounts for more than 5 percent of US gross domestic product (GDP) and employs more than any other industry, roughly 16 million workers, or one in ten. Globally, the emergence of mega-platforms like Amazon and Alibaba, with their consolidated supply chains and mountains of customer data, is forcing the industry to adopt leaner and more responsive operating models while the workforce comes to terms with automation and other advances.

Dan O’Connor and Bradley Heaven are changing the game for people with disabilities through their company called All Access Life. Jennifer and Emily from Laval Senior Academy are joined by Abegayle from Laval Junior Academy to find out more. Bradley was born with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. I've been working alongside Brad for the past 10 years as his aide. Over the years we've built a very unique and everlasting friendship. Since Bradley is non-verbal we have our own way of communicating with his eye movements and body gestures. However, Bradley also uses technology to communicate with the use of switches located on both sides of his head as well as an eye tracker. Over the years we've seen the amazing effects technology has had on his life. He's already accomplished so much at his young age and has the technology to thank because of it. However, we've noticed how fast technology comes and goes, making it difficult to keep up with the current (sometimes superior) gadgets. Our goal is to create a website that updates the latest trends and movements in accessible technology, apps, and general information. Informed consent Facebook has been under fire for running a controversial 'emotion manipulation' study on 689,003 Facebook users. The experiment, to find out whether emotions were contagious on the social network, involved minor changes to users' news feeds. It's contentious because the users were not informed that they were taking part in an experiment. Facebook says, check the terms and conditions, but Dr Chris Chambers at Cardiff University says that the ethical standards for science are higher, and should involve informed consent. Dan O'Connor, Head of Medical Humanities at the Wellcome Trust, gives a short history of consent in experimentation. El Nino According to the Met Office, the world is almost certain to be struck by the "El Nino" phenomenon this year, with the potential to induce "major climactic impacts" around the world. Roland Pease investigates this flip in the climate state of the Pacific basin, and asks the experts studying this phenomenon, whether it'll be a major event and how it might affect the climate. Gravitational Waves The announcement, earlier this year, that the BICEP 2 telescope at the South Pole had detected evidence that gravitational waves exist may have been premature. Gravitational waves are theoretical phenomena, based on observation of polarisation of ancient cosmic light. Finding them, adds to the evidence that the Universe is expanding. The data has now been made public, but the confidence in the numbers is being questioned. Cloud cover A listener asks about cloud cover and night time temperatures, and how air temperature and moisture content interact. Our expert Peter Sloss from the Met Office answers. There's a reason why Zebras don't get ulcers. Their brains stop releasing stress hormones as soon as the stress factor is gone (according to Robert Zapolsky, author of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers). Our brains, however, keep releasing stress hormones and toxic chemicals long after the stress factor has left us. This is why we need a systematic approach to "disengaging" from stressful people and situations. This 4-step process is the best I have found.
