The time has come, dear listeners. The end of June Gloom 2: Down to Frown. We hope you enjoyed this annual, well, bi-annual -okay, occasional - trip into the dark abyss of the "saddies" released by New World Pictures. And for our closing film, do we have a sad film for you: 1978's AUTUMN SONATA aka HÖSTSONATEN, written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, and starring Ingrid Bergman, Liv Ullmann and Lena Nyman. It's a real Bergman-off, with double your Bergmans for all your crying (and whispering) pleasure! How did New World get their hands on this? We explain! How well did the Bergmans (not related) get along during filming? We'll tell you! What's the best elixir for get deep into conversation with you mom? You may know already, but we discuss, and imbibe! Was Bergman a "bro," we explore! And do you want stories about piano lessons from our actual life? You just lucked out! Trust us, 'ol Berg put together a wild movie, and so our episode follows suit, as we discuss the business Bergie should have dived into, delve into Berg Berg's personal life, and hey, are those pizza bites ready yet? Did the timer go off? Are we wrapped for the day or do we have to film more close-ups? Trust us, this is the episode of Bergman you don't want to miss! A bucket list guest, director Fritz Kiersch, returns with the second half of our conversation that covers his move from the commercial world to the New World (ahem) of features starting with 1984's CHILDREN OF THE CORN and continuing with 1985's TUFF TURF as Fritz continued to deliver success after success for New World Pictures. And because the movies Fritz directed were so well received, he was one of the few directors to get a three picture deal, which would eventually end with 1989's UNDER THE BOARDWALK (and, in our eyes, should have included 1987's WINNERS TAKE ALL). We put CHILDREN OF THE CORN and TUFF TURF under the microscope and talk about the production of each, including casting, script changes, building a soundtrack, French New Wave, and what happened to the Cornmobile! As you will recall from the first part of our conversation with Fritz, he is as quick-witted and sharp as ever, so you don't want to miss this look back at two classic New World films. Again, we cannot thank Fritz enough for sitting down with us for such an extended discussion of his career! Don't miss it! June Gloom 2: Down to Frown is upon us dear listeners, and things are dark. Lucky for you, and us, we are joined this week by special guest and NWPPVIP Tommy Bechtold! Tommy is a comedian, and actor, and if you have been fortunate enough to see Tommy perform stand up or listened to our episodes on DEF-CON 4, BEVERLY HILLS VAMP, TRIAL OF THE INCREDIBLE HULK, you know he is hilarious. Truly a ray of sunshine in this otherwise gloomy month. In this episode we head down South to talk about 1976's NASHVILLE GIRL. Directed by Gus Trikonis (THE EVIL), this 1970's hicksploitation film follows a 16-year-old runaway, played by Monica Gayle (SWITCHBLADE SISTERS), as she makes her way to the big city of Nashville (spoiler in the title!) to pursue a career in the music industry as a county singer. In this episode, we laugh, we cry, we ask whyyyyyy would anyone not listen to us explore diners, fashion, and the highly questionable choices of the 70s when newspapers were the gateway to all our dreams. And does this have anything to do with another film from the 70s with "Nashville" in the title? Listen and find out! June Gloom 2: Down to Frown is officially underway, and we are kicking it off with the 1980 British drama RICHARD'S THINGS, starring Liv Ullmann and Amanda Redman.RICHARD'S THINGS is the story of Kate, a woman whose husband Richard has the decency to die before the movie even really gets going, leaving behind his things — and, as Kate slowly pieces together, his mistress. What follows is a methodical, quivering-lipped journey through grief, betrayal, and the unlikely friendship that blooms between a widow and her late husband's younger lover, Josie. United by their mutual loss, mutual exasperation, and a shared appreciation for lighting a cigarette without ever actually smoking it, the two women navigate the emotional wreckage of loving the same deeply average man. There's so much to uncover in RICHARD'S THINGS. And by uncover, we don't mean nudity. There's not much of that. But there are omelets. There are hugs — intense, hard-R hugs. There is a burglar in slacks. There are disgruntled in-laws. And eventually, there is a road-side breakup that may be the most efficient ending of a relationship in cinema history. We discuss the film's notoriously deliberate pacing — which is to say, every line of dialogue arrives as though it has traveled a great distance and needs a moment to rest. We gush over the film's undisputed highlight: a gloriously civil home burglary committed by a man in a sport coat who would go on to play Emperor Palpatine in the STAR WARS franchise. Just as soon as it began, Marc's Miserable Marvelous May 4: EVER! has come to a close, but not before we do battle in a - shhhhh! - "secret" war with SPIDER-MAN: SECRET WARS! Stitched together with five episode of the Spider-Man Animated Series and released on home video, SECRET WARS sees Spidey go up against The Beyonder and Madame Web in a test to see if good can triumph over evil! Why did The Beyonder have to transport Spider-Man and other heroes onto a distant planet to watch that when they seem to do it on the regular on Earth? Who knows! All we know is there are some rules and also not some rules.Joining us in the adventure is Karen Graci, a writer and producer for My Adventures with Superman (check out Season 3 on HBO MAX and/or Adult Swim) and the Head Writer and Producer of the upcoming series My Adventures with Green Lantern! We discuss why Madame Web represents life goals, why it sucks to be pulled into an interdimensional battle when you're in the middle of something, and how easy it is to ruin an entire planet's existence! Was Marc miserable? Did he enjoy it? Which character was his favorite? You have to listen to find out!For more about the New World Pictures Podcast, including previous episodes, t-shirts, mugs, sweatshirts, other merch and more, we DARE YOU to head here: https://newworldpicturespodcast.com/For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/
We continue Marc's Miserable Marvelous May 4: EVER! with an interview that dives deep into our Nearly New World selection from last week: 1995's BLACK SCORPION! Yes, we talk with screenwriter Craig J. Nevius about his career from writing plays in high school to casting Brad Pitt in his debut feature, 1989's HAPPY TOGETHER, to his beginnings with Roger Corman writing 1991's KISS ME A KILLER to 1994's FANTASTIC FOUR and, of course, the BLACK SCORPION franchise.Along the way we talk about the issues behind the infamous FANTASTIC FOUR production (and dispel some myths), what it was like working with Stan Lee, the difficulty in casting Adam West, what Craig learned from his years working with Corman, and, of course, Underoos. This is an amazing conversation filled with insight and stories never revealed before, so don't miss it! Marc's Miserable Marvelous May takes a turn towards Sexy Town with 1995's Black Scorpion. We're joined by Joan Severance super-fan and host of Get Me Another Podcast, Chris Iannacone. Made for Showtime, Black Scorpion is the first in a series of made-for-cable movies and a series. As Chris wisely points out, "it's Batman for Skinamax". Black Scorpion may not be what you're expecting and that's what makes it so much fun. Darcy Walker (Black Scorpion) is on a mission to rid Angel City of evildoers and "do" her former police partner. While he is worried about a potential HR violation, she knows that with some latex and an eye mask, he'll never know it's her. This brings up a legitimate question. If your co-worker or friend or spouse put on a mask and proceeded to romance you, would you think it was a completely different person? Be honest. We also really show our age with this episode. We talk about the challenges of trying to get through a 2 and a half hour movie in one sitting when your getting up there in years. There are two Robert Eurich references. We discuss the reboot of Love Boat and Side Out, the best volleyball movie ever made. There is an above average amount of "dongle talk". We get a visit by Jan from HR. We also flesh out a little more planning for Steamin'. We're looking for body doubles (especially in the wang department. We're also looking for financing. Steamin' demands a big budget. And big wangs. Please help us realize our dreams. For more about the New World Pictures Podcast, including previous episodes, t-shirts, mugs, sweatshirts, other merch and more, we DARE YOU to head here: https://newworldpicturespodcast.com/For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/
It's that time of year again, the time Marc dreads: Marc's Miserable Marvelous May, where we torture the non-superhero loving Marc with all the Marvel content produced while New World Pictures owned Marvel! In previous years we discussed The Incredible Hulk, the Punisher, even Power Pack, but now it's time to discuss the misfits of Marvel, The X-Men for our 4th installment of making Marc's life a superpowered living hell!In order to properly discuss this merry band of mutants, we brought back one of our most powerful previous guests, the hilarious writer and performer Peter Fluet! You may remember home from Episode 33: STAR CRYSTAL! Peter brings his deep Marvel knowledge to the pod to help us make Marc Miserable. This original pilot with 1989's PRYDE OF THE X-MEN was a pilot that didn't quite kickstart the X-Men Animated Series, but was certainly a precursor, though this version of the X-Men is slightly more... Australian than it needed to be. And also maybe a little pervy. Join us as we discuss the amazing theme song, the nostalgic animation, the wild collection of characters and their vocal choices. Don't worry Marc is still miserable, and we'll spend the month making sure he stays that way! We continue to celebrate #100YearsofCorman by pushing the boundaries of our "Nearly New World" sub-series to 1993, when Roger Corman decided to beat JURASSIC PARK at its own game and made his own dinosaur movie, CARNOSAUR! Joining us for this episode is author Joseph R. Palinkas, the writer of the new book, History of Carnosaur, which delves into the entire CARNOSAUR franchise of films, which also includes DINOSAUR ISLAND and Jim Wynorski's RAPTOR. First, we discuss how Joseph discovered the CARNOSAUR franchise and his decision to write the book, the difficulties of writing a book about the CARNOSAUR movies, and then we dive into the first movie, writer/director Adam Simon's original CARNOSAUR, starring Diane Ladd, Raphael Sbarge, Jennifer Runyon, and Harrison Page! We talk chicken eggs, shelf-stable pie, and why it's important for a company not to leave the mad doctor they've just hired alone and with no oversight. Plus, Bobcats, hippies, and the scenes that didn't make the theatrical cut!Don't miss this dive into CARNOSAUR with someone who literally wrote the book on the subject! Then, go buy Joseph's book! We discuss Jonathan's time working at new World, the company's philosophy, and his insights on what Larry Kuppin and Harry Sloan had in mind when they purchased New World from Roger Corman in 1983. We also discuss his brief distribution venture with Studio Three Film Corporation, which released 1991's POPCORN! Plus, as celebrate #100Yearsof Corman, we end by discussing Roger Corman's legacy and who might fill his much-missed shoes. This is an interview you don't want to miss and Jonathan fills us in on something we've wanted to talk about for a long time, what it was like to work at New World Pictures! But even if you have, here's a longer version of that recording with even more discussion about Canadian director James Makichuk's debut film, shot on location in Alberta, Canada. We discuss all the important aspects of the movie: the importance of being grateful for free coffee, difficult monologues, the beauty and terror of Alberta winters, and All-Dressed chips! Also, how exactly does one say, "wendigo?" Erica finds an all-new and unexpected pronunciation! Yasmina dives deep into Makichuk's post-GHOSTKEEPER career! Marc explains how snowmobiles work! This week on the New World Pictures Podcast, we explore the “hills” of Chicago as seen in this action crime feature 1975's CAPONE, a movie New World Pictures nearly released! Join us as we analyzing its unique (and questionable) perspective and the overwhelming number of characters, spoiler alert, most of whom are barely introduced! Starring Ben Gazzara (SAINT JACK) as a both young and old Al Capone (though, mostly old), Sylvester Stallone (DEATH RACE 2000) as a young and alive Frank Nitti, Susan Blakely as the true Lord of Flatbush, and the greatest name to ever exist in Hollywood, Royal Dano (HOUSE II: THE SECOND STORY) as short term Chicago Mayor Anton J Cermak! If you love film deep dives into syphilis (and, really, who doesn't?!) and have always wanted to learn more about Marc's eclectic work history, leading into a surprisingly detailed and entertaining look behind the scenes into the pros and cons of being a newspaper delivery boy, from early mornings to the realities of the industry, then you won't want to miss a single minute of this episode. Now in it's sixth year, we celebrate Roger Corman's birthday by watching films from his directing history, and this year, we brought in a special guest: filmmaker and author Kier-La Janisse! Kier-la is a badass! Not just because she wrote the book House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films, or because she directed and produced the documentary WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED: A HISTORY OF FOLF HORROR, or even her work for Severin as an editor and producer of special features, but because she joined us from her home in Canada where a windstorm had knocked out her power! Armed with her cellphone and a lantern, she discussed her Roger Corman film selection and discussed her new book, Cockfight: A Fable of Failure, which examines the 1974 Monte Hellman film COCKFIGHTER released by New World Pictures! They discuss why Kier-La decided to write a book about COCKFIGHTER, why Monte Hellman didn't want her to write one, and the difficulty of getting Ed Begley, Jr. to do an interview! All that plus much, much more, including Roger Corman movie picks from Marc, Erica, and Ryan! What did they choose? You'll have to listen to find out! Happy birthday, Roger! To close out #MarchMadness 2: Let's Get Nuts, we had to go to the Light - Judith Light - with this made-for-TV movie co-starring an incredible cast of TV stars: Rhea Perlman (Cheers) and Jimmy Smits (L.A. Law)! Yes, we lost our minds watching DANGEROUS AFFECTION aka STAMP OF A KILER (as New World would release it on VHS), a New World Television production that stars Light as a pregnant children's book author (and illustrator, apparently) whose son happens upon a stamp that has secret plans imposed on it though the magic of 1980s computer technology! This makes her the target of a killer played by Michael Parks (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN) who may be lethal but his planning is not!In this episode we talk about the dangers of friendship's affection, the importance of blending in, and a brand-new culinary creation that is sweeping the Seattle food scene! Oh, hey, about that last part, we should warn you, even though we are talking about a TV movie, don't listen to this episode with your kids! GRAMMY-winning producer, artist, and songwriter Charlie Peacock defies categorization. Paul chats with him about everything from his early days on the Norther California jazz scene, to writing hits for the Christian music world, to producing everyone from the Civil Wars to Switchfoot. PART ONE:Scott and Paul talk about aging, the Rolling Stones concert Scott just saw, the centrality of energetic drummers, and other fun stuff. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Charlie PeacockABOUT CHARLIE PEACOCKFrom jazz to pop to rock to country, gospel, and Americana, Charlie Peacock is a Grammy-winning producer, artist, and songwriter who defies categorization. In addition to his own wide-ranging work as a recording artist, he has written well-known songs such “Every Heartbeat,” which was a major pop hit for Amy Grant, and “In the Light,” which is best known for the version recorded by DC Talk. He's responsible for developing and producing the Grammy Award-winning duo The Civil Wars and the Modern Rock band Switchfoot, including their multi-platinum Top 40 pop hit “Dare You to Move.” Peacock launched his career as an artist on the Northern California jazz scene before recording his debut album, Lie Down in the Grass, which was released by A&M Records in the mid-1980s. After a stint with Island Records, he moved to Nashville to work as an artist and producer. His 1990 album, The Secret of Time, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rock/Contemporary Gospel Album. In that decade, he produced nearly 50 albums for other artists, and was named the Gospel Music Association's Producer of the Year for three consecutive years. The long list of artists he has produced includes Nicole Nordeman, David Crowder, Holly Williams, The Lone Bellow, Al Green, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It's Die Hard in the war on drugs! For this very special episode, Phil and Liam are joined by a VERY special guest: actor, writer, director, comic book author, renaissance man and podcasting superstar PAUL SCHEER! That's right, the effervescent host of top film podcasts Unspooled and How Do This Get Made? chartered a helicopter and flew in to join Phil and Liam for an intensive analysis of this mid--90s classic! The film's complex plot is thus: after a close friend is murdered by international drug traffickers, the vengeful US President (Donald Moffet) tacitly instructs his National Security team to launch a series of secret military strikes against the parties deemed responsible. Soon the new CIA deputy director Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) discovers himself to be an unwitting pawn in a covert, illegal war between American paramilitary forces and the Colombian drug cartels. As the carnage escalates, Ryan must find a way to quell the bloodshed and expose the corruption at the heart of his own government. CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is the third entry in the Jack Ryan film franchise that started with THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. That particular movie was of course directed by DIE HARD helmer John McTiernan, meaning that there is plenty of ‘DIE HARD DNA' in the mix here…but does this motion picture also share some key similarities with Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER? The guys assess its influences and its legacy, while also wrestling with another burning question: is this the ultimate ‘Dad movie'? Paul talks passionately about his deep and long-standing connection with DIE HARD and his youthful love for all things Bruce Willis, and the guys go deep on the film's eclectic creative contributors, that includes personalities such as Tom Clancy, Harrison Ford, Philip Noyce, John Milius and Steven Zaillian. They also discuss the virtues of an outstanding ensemble cast that features the likes of Willem Dafoe, James Earl Jones, Anne Archer, Thora Birch, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Raymond Cruz, Benjamin Bratt and Miguel Sandoval. Paul even discusses the part he'd most love to play! The stacked cast makes for a particularly entertaining edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a tantalizing trivia quiz provides some stimulating brain-teasers…along with a warm and fuzzy moment or two. This highly entertaining episode is not to be missed - how DARE YOU not listen to it?! Today, I continue to share the story of my real estate journey from the years I held W-2 jobs, through getting my license and becoming a Realtor. In the past few episodes, you've heard how I lost my last W-2 job and the mental breakdown that followed, along with the incredible support I received from the people around me. I was able to get through that dark time, but there was the lull of not being able to find another job. It was this lull that led me to getting my real estate license. Today we're going to talk about new life—not only had I finally finished getting licensed on August 28, 2019, but our son was born a few days later on September 2nd. It was a wonderful, stressful time, trying to figure out how to juggle working my real estate business, Valerie going back to work, and our new baby. I think it prepared me for the stress and changes that can come with being a Realtor because so much happens at the same time in real estate as well—and you just have to handle whatever comes your way. I was trying anything I could to do the real estate work and get my name out there, while also helping with my son at home. New life was a theme for this season of our life—new opportunities and beginnings. That's how we closed out 2019. So, I was busy interacting with people and telling them about my real estate business, learning to be natural and not a pushy salesman about it. Once you get licensed, you don't start making money right away. At home we were trying to get into a routine, my son wasn't sleeping well. I tried to support my wife during her 10-12 weeks of maternity leave. When she went back to work, it was a big adjustment. I learned that if you're going to have success in real estate, you have to figure out how to get work done around things. Even if you only have a 15-minute break, get stuff done—emails, calls. I worked while he rested, while I was feeding him, or while he was playing quietly—getting podcasts done or connections with clients or other Realtors. Watching my son at home really helped me learn the importance of using my time wisely. When you're a new Realtor, you're not going to have success in the beginning. I didn't have any settlements until April of 2020, but I learned to use the relationships and connections you make to tell everyone about real estate. I could build relationships with people and let them know I was in real estate. I still do that in my business today. I reached out on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc., to connect to people. A friend reached out to me from Wisconsin as a joke and asked if I could help her buy a home out there—I was actually able to say yes, because when you're a Realtor, you can refer to any Realtor across the country and get 25% of the commission. I ended up making a connection and a thousand dollars. Some of those early conversations paid dividends later, but I had to be patient. Whether you have a new child, or start a new business, it takes time—like riding a bike. Just like with a child, you are trying to grow and mature your real estate business and keep it alive. It was definitely a journey and those first couple of months were tough. I just continued trying to create and build relationships with people. As a person of faith, I think about resurrection and new life. There's this great line in the song, Dare You to Move from Switchfoot that says, “Maybe redemption has stories to tell. Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell,” and I think the lesson is that there's always a chance at redemption. In real estate, there is always a chance at success, a chance to grow and develop—you just have to find it and create success with it. On the next episode, we'll talk more about connecting to my first client and how things went from there. Thanks for listening. Let's start here: Jon Foreman is not a brand of elegant men's watches. Far from it, in fact. He's the frontman of the popular rock band Switchfoot, which reached its peak of commercial chart success in the early 2000s with a pair of mammoth hits. But this not some has-been rock-and-roll outfit looking to hang on. Switchfoot has continued to produce a string of strong records, while Foreman has led some notable side projects, since the band debuted under the name “Chin Up” in 1996. Switchfoot's most recent album, “Interrobang” – released in late-summer 2021 – is no exception to the band's string of strong work. Foreman and Switchfoot first gained mainstream recognition in 2002, when four of its songs were used in the film “A Walk to Remember.” This led to the band's major label debut – 2003's “The Beautiful Letdown” – which ultimately sold 2.6 million copies and produced megahits “Meant to Live” and “Dare You to Move.” The sad reality, however, is that American music consumers often tire of hitmakers receiving frequent airplay. The Counting Crows, Goo Goo Dolls and Hootie & The Blowfish come to mind, and certainly Switchfoot could fall into that pocket of peers. But the band also wrestled with a conflict of brand – much like NeedtoBreathe, which will tour with Switchfoot this Fall. The band's initial success in the late 1990s first came in the Christian Contemporary Music (CCM) scene. And despite later bringing its sound to more secular audiences in the early 2000s, Switchfoot is frequently referred to as a “Christian rock band.” In fact, at one juncture, the group's management purposely steered the band away from religious festivals and media. But here's the thing: Forman and his brother Tim – Switchfoot's bassist – grew up in a deeply religious home with a father who leads a San Diego-area megachurch. So yes, Foreman is a Christian. Get over it. Does that fully color the band's art? Not at all. Ultimately, Switchfoot perseveres and continues to thrive. From early hits to the “Hello Hurricane” album (which received a Grammy award in 2011) and beyond. The band continues to rack up notable accomplishments. In our conversation, Foreman comes across as a kind, introspective artist, hiding from, nor behind, any of the challenges or successes the band has faced over the past quarter-century. Switchfoot merely endures – rather well, indeed – continuing to delight the band's remarkably dedicated fanbase and producing quality music. So enjoy the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast with Switchfoot founder and frontman Jon Foreman.

Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman found success in the 2000s with a string of hits including "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move." A devout Christian, Foreman and Switchfoot are often mislabeled as a "Christian band." But as he explains, Christianity is a faith, not a genre. From his studio in Southern California, he talks to Jordan and Demi about his new album and 25 years in the music industry.
