Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist and author of the New York Times bestselling book My Stroke of Insight. As irony would have it, at 37 years old, Dr. Jill experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain. Within hours, she lost the ability to walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Today, Dr. Jill passionately shares her 8-year-long journey to rebuild her brain and recover all physical, emotional, and thinking abilities, in addition to her latest groundbreaking work: Whole Brain Living. Beyond neuroscience, this conversation will teach you how to work with your most powerful ally, your brain, and give you the insight to deepen your inner peace, joy, and fulfillment. SHOW NOTES: After her brother's diagnosis with schizophrenia, Dr. Jill became intrigued with the brain, earning her doctrine in neuroanatomy from Harvard. Have you had the experience where you thought you were doing your fair share of the conversation, but someone had a sarcastic comment like “keep it down over there.” Or how about”Why are you so quiet?” What is the introvert comeback to a statement or question like this? These statements and questions are rarely helpful and can even be harmful. Introverts can be confident in conversations knowing themselves and sometimes it is time to speak and sometimes it is time to think and embrace the quiet.References in this podcast: Amy Krueger, “The 5 Words Introverts Loathe to Hear: Why Are You So Quiet?”David Keirsey, “Please Understand Me II” Get my book: Minding Your Time: Time Management, Productivity, and Success, Especially for IntrovertsContact the host of Quiet and Strong :David HallAuthor, Speaker, Educator, Podcasterquietandstrong.comGobio.link/quietandstrongdavid@quietandstrong.comTwitter | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedInTake the FREE Personality Assessment:Typefinder Personality AssessmentYou may also like:Quiet & Strong Merchandise
In this episode, I interview type expert Linda Berens about the ethics of personality type instruments, the self-discovery process, and how to best use personality typology as a tool that doesn’t cause harm. Linda Berens, founder of Interstrength, has been working with the theory of personality types since 1975 and was even mentored by David Keirsey, founder of Keirsey Temperament Theory. She has integrated Keirsey’s temperaments with the works of Carl Jung and MBTI and looks at the 16 holistic patterns of type through multiple lenses to help people find their best fit. Now, she offers a full curriculum for personality type practitioners and has written several books about typology. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA but currently residing in Austin, TX, Peter built his career developing full-stack applications for over 25 years. He has held multiple roles but enjoys teaching and mentoring the most. After working on a comp sci degree from Point Park College and then leaving early, Peter has held down a variety of roles in the tech industry including programmer, software architect, principal engineer, front end engineer, director of technology, and senior software engineering manager. Over the years, Peter has worked for the likes of Dell, Perficient, MarketVine, SuperNaut and ClickVine. He’s even co-founded his own company, Checkmate Technologies and served as their Chief Marketing Officer. Quotes“Folks coming out of boot camps or learning on your own, you’re writing a lot of things from scratch. In the real world, you don’t do that a whole lot. That’s rare, especially in larger companies. So I learned how to read code, how to understand code and how to hold a lot of information in my head.”“What really drives me now is mentoring and teaching. I love research, I love to build things. I’m a great starter but not a great finisher. But I found that I could explain technical things to lay people and to more junior technologists and even to senior technologists.”“I do about 5 or 6 people at a time and take them through about an 8 month program. The full list from my website - I have skipped some just because this is the longest podcats I have ever recorded and I wanted you to get the end! But I think maybe it's a good way to see the sheer diversity that goes into my thinking and writing. *Note - slight slip where I called it the 'Progressive' Democrats Convention this week - But that has been because it's been so Progressive to me! I think it is really important to credit others work – what has gone before you. And to allow your readers/listeners and so on to form their own opinions of the work. You don’t have to love or agree for them to inspire you – but many of these are my heroes. Not in any order – just as they came to mind. I seem to add to the list weekly as I continue to learn. In our 3rd episode on Personality, we dive into the Four "Ancient" Temperaments first introduced by Galen of Pergamon, a Greek physician and surgeon. We talk our own individual reflections on the aforementioned identities, the utilization of these in popular media and how Keirsey realigned them to work alongside the Meyer-Briggs theory on personality. All of this and more, to ultimately learn how to make sense of your identity while also living in peace with those around you. Dr. David Keirsey was an American psychologist, a professor emeritus at California State University, Fullerton, and the author of several books. With a focus on conflict management and cooperation, Keirsey specialized in family and partnership counseling and the coaching of children and adults. Episodes 25-29 of Desire Line Podcast- Attachment Theory Sermon On The Mount: Judging Romans 1 & 2: Sexuality Stage II: the stage at which a person has blind faith in authority figures and sees the world as divided simply into good and evil, right and wrong, us and them. Once children learn to obey their parents and other authority figures, often out of fear or shame, they reach Stage II. Many so-called religious people are essentially Stage II people, in the sense that they have blind faith in God, and do not question His existence. With blind faith comes humility and a willingness to obey and serve. The majority of good, law-abiding citizens never move out of Stage II. Matthew 22:21 Jesus said "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's." ... For there is no authority except from God and those which exist are established by God." If the law of the land is that everyone must pay war taxesthen that is what we must do. It is the law! Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh
I have always had a fascination for personality tests, and the Myers Briggs Indicator has been the granddaddy of them all for decades. My friend Jewel Kaste (meet her in Episode 4 of the podcast) has been diving deep into the MBTI for decades and is the perfect guest to share a clear and practical description of the traits and how they affect our lives in practical ways. So fun! According to researcher David Keirsey in his book Please Understand Me, only about 24% of the population has the intuition preference. I tend to agree with that research. So how can it be that 90% of the podcast hosts, who try to describe the Myers Briggs system have the intuition trait? The answer is that they don't have it. They just want to have it. Everyone - and I mean "everyone," wants to have the intuition trait because it is seen by others as having a sixth sense. Where the general population has five senses, they believe that if they have an extra way of taking in information, that they are a little bit special. It is like having a superpower. In this episode, I discuss what it really means to have the intuition trait, and how it may not be a super-power after all. In the extreme case, it is often diagnosed as autism. So what I'm getting at here, is that sometimes, it can be a curse. The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is a not stand-alone system, but is linked to the Myers Briggs System. What David Keirsy does with the system he created is to tie the four temperaments to specific personality dimensions from the Myer's Briggs. We like the Myers Briggs for selling because it is about how decisions are made. Most people see personality as "behavior," because it is easy to pick up by observing others. There are four styles of people that are relatively easy to categorize, which are called the four temperaments. Other taxonomies are like DiSC are set up to describe these four temperaments. But the original Myers Briggs system did not have a way to define these temperaments until David Keirsey spotted and notated the dimensions from Myers Briggs. In this episode, we'll briefly cover the four temperaments, and how we can use them to quickly convert them to Myers Briggs and other personality taxonomies.
