Our Score - 8.75/10 (A-) Rotten Tomatoes - 85% IMDB - 8/10 Chosen By: Aaron Cronican The Batman establishes a fresh identity that lays a fantastic foundation for a new franchise. Robert Pattinson makes for an interesting Batman and the supporting cast are all at the top of their game. Director Matt Reeves and cinematographer Greig Fraser bring Gotham to life with beautifully, and the haunting score from Michael Giacchino is the cherry on top of this great film.
DC and Warner Bros. has made yet another version of Batman. This time starring Robert Pattinson as the titular Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as the “not yet Commissioner” James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, The unrecognizable Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Paul Dano as The Riddler. Compared to other Bat Outings, the amount of time Pattinson spent inside the suit is surprising. Director Matt Reeves made it seem like Bruce Wayne was the mask to cover his true identity. Every direction and take they went with these characters felt right, sometimes even better than previous successful iterations of them. It was nice to see another of Batman's rogues get a chance to shine in the spotlight despite being depicted by Jim Carrey once before on the big screen. The Riddler fit well with the tone and the style of the film. The riddles were complex, and really threw the characters, and the audience, for a loop… in a good way. Finally, this film better win an academy award for best make up. Colin Farrell's transformation into the Penguin is phenomenal. He gets completely lost in the prosthetics, and in no way does it look like a guy wearing a fat suit with prosthetics. This movie is so good, the 3 hour run time couldn't prevent the Brothers Brotastic from giving this movie 2 tickets. Thrilled to have seen this movie in theaters, and would gladly have bought another ticket to see it again.

Could The Batman finally be DC's vengeance against its rival Marvel? Can a former teenage vampire sex symbol pull off the latest iteration of the caped crusader? Not only is it time to take to the streets of Gotham with our favorite masked vigilante... But also to cover my 5TH COMMISSIONED EPISODE. That's right! This episode is sponsored by my buddy Ron who commissioned me to cover The Batman. Director Matt Reeves brings the Caped Crusader back to the big screen in a much more dark and gritty take. With the Riddler on the loose picking some of Gotham's elect, it's up to Batman and Gordon to track him down and put a stop to his diabolical plans. And while this feature flick boasts a hearty three hour runtime, it is packed to the max with all the goodies us Bat-fans could want. Will Batman be able to stop the Riddler, protect Catwoman AND drop some justice on these bad reviewers? Tune in to find out! Nick and Foxx are back after a brief hiatus and reviewing the biggest movie of 2022 yet, The Batman. Robert Pattinson steps into the role of the caped crusader with Director Matt Reeves at the helm, utilizing a darker, grittier and more noir feel to the classic character. Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Colin Ferrel and more offer a crazy talented supporting cast that all deliver. The Batman is different from any predecessors and will challenge what you think about the franchise as a whole. Director Matt Reeves joins us again this week to discuss The Batman. This is part 2 of our special 2-part episode on this movie, where we discuss the film's incredible cinematography. If you haven't already, be sure to check out part 1, where we break down the sound and music of The Batman, in our podcast archive from earlier this week, or on YouTube: https://youtu.be/uZ_3Kdm_ZhE (https://youtu.be/uZ_3Kdm_ZhE) Joining Matt is Director of Photography Greig Fraser (who joins us separately, later in this episode, as he is currently on location in London), and Supervising and Lead Digital Colorist, David Cole. But this episode is not just a deep dive into the technical aspects of their fascinating post-production process, but also includes details on how Matt and Greig managed to make such an epic movie feel like you, in the audience, were right there in the middle of all the action. "When we shot things, even like the Batmobile chase, even though there's a tremendous amount of visual effects in the movie, I didn't want you to be aware that we were doing them at all. And so we always used the parameters of how you would do it if you were doing it practically. And so [with] the Batmobile chase, we're putting cameras and we're locking them onto hard mounts, so you're watching a lot of hard mounts and that kind of stuff. And then, 'what's in focus?' And it's in the middle of rain. And 'what does that rain look like?' And there were times when Greig would take a filter and put a little bit of silicone on it... so that when you put it in front of the lens and when it got wet, you had the sense that it wasn't just that we were in rain that was perfectly photographed. The lens itself got wet. So you feel like you're in the middle of it. And so everything was about putting you squarely in that experience." — Matt Reeves, Director, Co-Writer, and Producer, "The Batman" Be sure to https://www.thebatman.com/ (check out The Batman) at a Dolby Cinema near you. This week, we invite back friend of the pod and Bat-fanatic Paresh to share his thoughts on "The Batman." This latest movie adds an article to the title and subtracts all sunlight from the world. Director Matt Reeves' version of the Dark Knight detective is failing in his mission to rescue Gotham City from itself. If Tim Burton's Batman was grim and Christopher Nolan's was grimmer, then Reeves' take is grimmest of all.
Director Matt Reeves joins us this week to discuss The Batman. This is part 1 of our special 2-part episode on this film, since there is so much to discuss with Matt and his team. So be sure to check out part 2, where we discuss the cinematography of The Batman, which will debut this Thursday! In this episode we are joined by Matt and his incredible team of sound and music artists: Michael Giacchino - Composer Will Files - Supervising Sound Editor Douglas Murray - Supervising Sound Editor Andy Nelson - Re-Recording Mixer Somehow, despite their very busy schedules, we managed to spend over an hour together (in-person!) discussing the amazing work this team did. And as you'll soon discover, this is a group that works incredibly well together, each bringing their exceptional creativity and craft to the process. But we also spend a lot of time discussing how Matt manages to bring everything together so seamlessly as the director: "You have to become an emotional compass. To me, that is the job of the director. Because you have so many incredibly creative people who you're working with. Here: I make a movie in my head and a piece of paper — that's one version of the movie. And it's a very narrow band of what that movie could be. And then you work with these artists and you want everyone to bring something... And I have to be an emotional compass to say, 'that idea is great! That idea really works!' Somebody has to do that. And the way you do that is by immersing yourself into that thing." — Matt Reeves, Director, Co-Writer, and Producer, "The Batman" This episode is a master class in filmmaking and collaboration, with a ton of insights into the process of crafting this latest superhero epic. With the recent successes of Batman properties in film and television media including James Gunn's Suicide Squad and Peacemaker and 2019 Joker, which is now the highest grossing R-Rated film of all time, it is to no one's surprise that the titular Batman was going to make his debut with high expectations to follow. Even with certain doubt in casting choices and repeating release date delays, The Batman will always rise and always be a box office hit. Not since Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy have fans been anticipating the return for The Batman on the big screen, not including Zack Snyder's version. Director Matt Reeves takes Batman and Gotham back to its dark and gritty roots paying homage and inspiration from the classic graphic novels of Frank Miller's "Year One" and the best selling Jeph Loeb "The Long Halloween", 2022 The Batman showcases everything fans have been yearning from the Dark Knight for years. Played by Robert Pattinson, Bruce Wayne has only been dawning the cape and cowl for 2 years, still trying to figure the best course of action of fixing Gotham's endless cycle of crime and corruption. With the help of Selina Kyle, played by Zoe Kravitz, Batman must face the likes of the enigmatic Riddler and crime bosses The Penguin and Carmine Falcone in tandem while also dealing with dark family history coming back to haunt him. We give our take and reactions towards the 3 hour film and what we think this reboot will mean for Batman in the near future! Fonseca talks with the late actor Richard Hatch from Battlestar Gallactica, The Batman: First Trailer Revealed at DC FanDome A new day is dawning in Gotham City and we finally have our first look at Warner Bros. and DC’s next iteration of the iconic Dark Knight. Director Matt Reeves took the virtual stage for Saturday’s DC FanDome event and introduced the first ever footage of his upcoming film, The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. Fans have been waiting for quite some time to see Pattinson in action, and this footage finally grants that opportunity. You can check it out above! The Batman was initially scheduled to arrive in theaters next summer, but the date was pushed to the fall due to the shutdowns caused by COVID-19. The film’s London production was put on hold a few weeks after beginning, so there is still quite a lot of work left to do. The current plan is for filming to resume next month, moving from an actual location to a set. Fortunately, according to co-writer Mattson Tomlin, these delays haven’t caused any changes to the film itself. “No. I mean, the movie is the movie, and I think that right now the plan is to just execute that vision,” Tomlin told us. “They were quite a ways into shooting as it was. And so it really is just how do you finish safely? How do you make sure that everybody can show up for work and then go home and all be okay?” Pattinson takes on the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, three years after Ben Affleck played the character in Justice League. Other actors that have portrayed the DC icon in live-action include Adam West, Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney. In addition to Pattinson, The Batman stars Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Paul Dano as The Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

#PodcastersForJustice Busy screenwriter and director, Mattson Tomlin, took a minute to rap with me about debuting a film during a pandemic, what it takes to break into Hollywood, and how he was brought on to co-write The Batman with Director Matt Reeves. "Every script is an opportunity to change your life. Every script is an investment in yourself."—Mattson Tomlin Mattson rose to prominence in 2017 after a bidding war for his original screenplay that became the Netflix film, Project Power, starring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and breakout Dominique Fishback. Hollywood Reporter describes the film as an "... action-packed tale that tackles themes [like] government control and the exploitation of marginalized communities." Tomlin recently gained attention for being brought on board to co-write The Batman with Matt Reeves; the reboot will star Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, and Jeffrey Wright among others. He is writing a film adaption of the video game character Mega Man for 20th Century Studios and sold a spec script, titled 2084, to Paramount Pictures. While getting his Master’s Degree in directing at the American Film Institute, Mattson created over a dozen short films, most as writer-director. Tomlin has appeared on the annual Hollywood's Black List six times in the past four years. The Batman is officially on the way and will land on June 25, 2021. Ben Affleck has exited the role in favor of a new, younger actor to play Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego. Names like Armie Hammer and Jon Hamm have been thrown out — even Nick Jonas! A discussion about the integration of sound within the storytelling process for the film "War for the Planet of the Apes" with Director Matt Reeves, Composer Michael Giacchino, and Sound Designers Will Files and Douglas Murray.
Director Joe Wright discusses his new film, Darkest Hour, with fellow Director Matt Reeves. Set during the early days of World War II, the film tells the story of how Winston Churchill wrestled with the decision of whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler or continue to fight against incredible odds, with full knowledge that the fate of Western Europe would hang in the balance.
Director Andy Serkis discusses his new film, Breathe, with fellow Director Matt Reeves. The film tells the inspiring true story of Robin and Diana Cavendish, who are determined to live their lives to the fullest after Robin is confined to a hospital bed by polio at the age of 28 and given only a few months to live.
Director Matt Reeves discusses his new film, War for the Planet of the Apes, with fellow Director Drew Goddard. The third installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise reboot finds Caesar leading a colony of apes who are forced into a struggle with an army of humans who want to destroy them.
Director Matt Reeves took over for the final two films after Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and has topped off a remarkable trilogy. Aside from two or three inconsequential problems, there is not much to complain about here with War for the Planet of the Apes. If you're able to take your eyes (mind) and ears away from the film's stunning visuals and sets and/or Michael Giacchino's (Lost, Star Trek 2009) brilliant score, then it's possible you'd might notice that there's not much more to the story than a rehash of elements from The Ten Commandments (1956), The Great Escape (1963), and Apocalypse Now (1979), just with a little extra fur. Cleverly, the setting of the story's events during a snow covered winter time, was a smart way to keep this one from looking too similar in location appearance to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. As someone who hasn't seen the original film and its lackluster sequels in a very very long time, I still was able to notice a vibe in this picture's style of little nods to those films, most definitely with the music. Along with the other movies in this trilogy, War shows not only the effort that was put into the Apes mythology, but also the importance of character interactions.

Filmmaker Matt Reeves knew his new film, War for the Planet of the Apes, had to work even without any help from computer-generated effects. He tells us about shooting whole film first with his actors in special motion capture suits, and shares early thoughts on his next project, The Batman.
Matt Reeves talks about directing actors for motion capture and his plans for the new Batman film.
