In this episode, we're breaking down a week that has fundamentally shifted the tectonic plates of the gaming industry. First, we tackle the "Dream Team" success of Edmund McMillen's Mewgenics—a 14-year labor of love that proves deep, uncompromising design still wins. We also check in on the "Indie Renaissance" with the undercover alien chaos of Roadside Research and the friendship-ending, $8 orbital-laser mayhem of Super Battle Golf. Then, we shift to the "Big Two" and the strange decisions coming out of the corporate boardrooms. With Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond departing Xbox and Bluepoint Games officially shuttered by Sony, the leadership of console gaming is in a total state of flux. Why is PlayStation pivoting to a stylized Horizon live-service game that fans didn't ask for? Can the "New Guard" at Microsoft find a soul for Xbox? It's a discussion about creative risks, corporate safe-bets, and why the most exciting things in gaming right now aren't coming from the names you expect. Show Notes: 0:46 - Housekeeping 2:51 - 14 Years to Success: Why Mewgenics Matters 42:41 - Super Battle Golf: 8 Players, 0 Rules, Pure Chaos. 1:04:54 - Paper Masks & Profit: Why Indie Sims are Saving Gaming 1:21:04 - PlayStation is Closing Studios.
Fresh off their interview with Mewgenics co-creator Edmund McMillen, the Triple Click gang dives into the game itself. They talk about the gross-out humor, the brilliant combat, and that truly spectacular soundtrack. On this week's All Elite Arcade, Chugs continues his run through the depths of Hades II, explores the disturbing world of Reanimal and gets a taste of High On Life 2. Meanwhile, Uno completes the detective mystery Penelope Pendrick and the Art of Deceit, continues his climb in Cairn and pours nearly 40 hours into Edmund McMillen's addictive new release, Mewgenics. In gaming news, the boys slice through a stacked Sony State of Play featuring Kena: Scars of Kozmura, Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, Silent Hill: Townfall and a tease of a God of War trilogy remake. The guys also look at the updates to Bungie's Marathon and the new Diablo expansions, including the addition of the new Warlock class. Over All in the GameAll in the Game is de podcast over games voor iedereen. Het komt allemaal aan bod in All in the Game. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Between the success of Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac, you might assume designer Edmund McMillen is feeling confident going into the release of his latest game, the tactics-focused Mewgenics. But it turns out self esteem issues, insecurity, and hoping people like what you've made is not a feeling that ever goes away, no matter how many people buy your games.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In 2011, Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl released The Binding of Isaac, a crude Flash project that grew into one of the most influential indie games of its era. We trace McMillen's path from comics to Super Meat Boy, his partnership with Himsl, and the deeply personal religious themes that shaped Isaac's grotesque story. The episode highlights its Zelda-inspired dungeons, roguelike randomization, and item transformations that turned every run into a new tale of survival. Our conversation explores critic and fan reactions, Nintendo's rejection over “blasphemous” content, and how expansions, remakes, and community mods expanded it into Rebirth, Afterbirth, and Repentance. From small experiment to genre-defining giant, we explore how Isaac sparked the roguelike revival. Join us as we dodge, cry, and descend into Isaac's basement on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Spelunky, part of a larger series on independent games. Tim uses the B word about the game, and we talk about the rigor with which one approaches the game, as well as some best practices for play, among other topics and listener mail. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Into the Jungle (Tim) Issues covered: relative lack of text but narrative, blending between levels, the Tunnel Man, the gold key and the chest, triggering the golden path, bouncing off the game originally, practice and rigor, in the learning/knowledge phase, a platformer Tim would play, embracing the process, how you spend the time and how to learn, learning from deathly mistakes, Always Be Carrying, looking down, the brilliance of breaking the platformer mold, "this could be the run," the patterns of Spelunky, learning to play Chess, remembering in chunks, slipping into flow and staying, dying to the shopkeeper in a new way, stepping back with the analytical brain, how to use ropes, everything's physical, building up the things you can do, the Polaroid simulating after you die, similarities to Outer Wilds, sacrificing on the altar, the safe space of a coffin, making a choice, running vs not running, the exception that proves the rule, how the random seed works, animating a sprite on a curve, the first commercial game, frying a video card. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Rogue, Rogue Legacy (series), Dark Souls (series), Mario (series), Andy Nealen, Outer Wilds, Hollow Knight, Remnant II, Chess, LostLake86, Legend of Zelda, Cave Story, Sasha/scarytiger, Daisuke Amaya, Wii, Nintendo Switch, Luke Theriault, Derek Yu, Aquaria, Alec Holowka, Bit Blot, World of Goo, Gish, Edmund McMillen, Lugaru HD, Wolfire Games, Humble Bundle, Penumbra, Frictional Games, Amnesia, Ori and the Blind Forest, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. This week, Zak and Aaron sit down with notable Austinite John Henderson, who has shipped numerous games and made a name for himself in the local development community for hosting Game Dev Beer Night and supporting aspiring professionals as they try to make sense of their careers.John was kind enough to share his insights on a wide range of topics from advice on finding fulfillment in your job to maintaining motivation to the state of the industry at large. A few technical difficulties during the recording may have changed the shape of this episode a bit, but John's perspective and honest opinions are well worth the listen. Also, apparently Aaron doesn't know what the word "erstwhile" means, and he deserves your scorn and derision. Please, enjoy.Listen to Beach Girl on SpotifyCheck out edouggieart on EtsyCheck out even more edouggieart on Instagram

It's not exactly easy to get into right away, but once you get it, you get it! Did we get it? Upon more research, no, no we did not. We got a lot of the rules wrong. No big deal though. Thanks! Kelly, James, and I look at Edmund McMillen's and Florian Himsel's "The Binding of Isaac." This wonderfully grotesque rouge like, is their shot in the dark when they didn't know it would be so well received. Come with us as we fawn over this game, and all its gross goodness.
Rob chats with game developer Edmund McMillen about getting started in the industry, The Binding of Isaac, and his upcoming tabletop game Tapeworm. The post #322 – Edmund McMillen appeared first on The Geek Generation.
Edmund McMillen's The Binding of Isaac helped kickstart the mainstreaming of roguelike elements in indie games that we have been seeing trickle into the AAA industry over the last few years. Mixing top-down shooting with the dungeon exploration of a classic The Legend of Zelda title, The Binding of Isaac plays pitch perfectly for what it's designed to be. The randomized elements fit together seamlessly for a gameplay experience that's never the same twice in a row. Should this 2011 indie hit be considered one of the best games of all-time? From humble beginnings as a Flash game back in 2008, Super Meat Boy sprang forth from the minds of Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes after a brutal development process that placed everything on the line for the duo of Team Meat. The plucky platformer stole the hearts, minds, and wallets of gamers when it helped to ease mainstream gamers into the indie scene back in 2010. Can its pinpoint platforming and blistering difficulty propel it to the pinnacle of gaming? Is Super Meat Boy one of the best games period?
