On this exciting episode of Fishing the DMV, I have on Susquehanna River fishing guide Chris Gorsuch returns to Fishing the DMV for a detailed look at summer smallmouth bass fishing across one of Pennsylvania's most recognizable river systems. From the main stem near Harrisburg and North Liverpool to the North Branch around Laceyville and the Endless Mountains, Chris explains what he is seeing from the fishery and how anglers can adjust when quality smallmouth are not holding in their usual places.Chris believes the Susquehanna River is still fishing well, especially for anglers looking to catch numbers of smallmouth bass. However, he has seen fewer fish in the 19- to 20-plus-inch range than during the previous several springs. Bigger bass are still available—including two 23-inch smallmouth caught from his boat—but finding them has required more movement, more fuel and a willingness to fish away from the same heavily pressured areas. We discuss how year classes, winter ice, delayed grass growth, floods, low water, high summer temperatures, pollution, predators and changing forage can all influence the Susquehanna River smallmouth population.The conversation also turns toward summer smallmouth fishing techniques and the best baits for different sections of the river. Chris considers a chatterbait essential on the lower Susquehanna and main stem, while crankbaits are a major part of his North Branch fishing from spring through late fall. On the nearby Delaware River, he leans heavily on spinnerbaits, especially white skirts paired with silver, gold or copper blades that resemble young American shad and other baitfish.Chris also breaks down several developments from FITT Lures, including the Flea Flicker swimbait, VIG and Javelin. The Flea Flicker features a keeled body that allows anglers to shorten the bait while maintaining its profile and action. The VIG is a compact, thick-walled tube-style bait that can be fished on a Ned head, screw-lock jig, Carolina rig or other presentations. Chris explains how these baits can be used around grass, deeper holes, current breaks and other productive river smallmouth habitat.Fish care is another important part of this episode. Chris shares why he nets every bass, keeps his camera ready before lifting a fish from the water and releases weak post-spawn fish without taking a picture. CORRECTION: The Loyalsock Trail and the Old Loggers Path is maintained by the Alpine Club of Williamsport.When people find out that I've visited every state park, I often get asked the same question. What's my favorite? And consistently I give the same answer, Worlds End State Park. It's an easy answer for me since I fell in love with the park the first time I walked into the s-shaped gorge to see it surrounded by tree-covered mountains and boulders. But when it comes to state forests, I haven't always had an answer. And that's because I just haven't spent enough time in them to give an educated answer. That was until 2024. In September of that year, I went on a Slack Pack with the Keystone Trails Association. Slack Packs allow you to get dropped off and picked up at the trial every day while leaving the majority of your gear and meals back at the campsite. Hence, having a slack pack.Over the course of few days, we hiked about 20 miles on the Loyalsock Trail through Loyalsock State Forest. The state forest – which surrounds Worlds End – provided me with everything I wanted. Mountains. Views. Waterfalls. Big beautiful tress. It was the most time I'd ever spent in a Pennsylvania state forest. And, still, the best time. I contend that if you can't find something unique or special or breathtaking over Loyalsock State Forest's nearly 115,000 acres, then buddy, you ain't trying. Loyalsock simply has it all. And all of it is splendid. From the cool rushing waters of Loyalsock Creek, to the beautiful nightsky at High Knob Astronomy Area, there is a lot to take in on the forest. Arianne Scheller, Ph.D., LPCDr. Scheller has a bachelor's and master's degree in Counseling from the University of Scranton, her PhD., in Human Development from Marywood University, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Scheller is an adult child of an alcoholic and has worked with families dealing with addiction in various counseling settings for the last 25 years.  Dr. Scheller has a private practice where she and her significant other, Peter Smith, MS, see patients on an individual outpatient basis and is the Chief Executive Officer of Endless Mountains Extended Care. Endless Mountains is an inpatient, dual diagnosis, drug and alcohol residential facility for adult males located in the beautiful NEPA countryside on 9 acres. Dr. Scheller and her father Steve, who is in long-term recovery, built Endless Mountains together, as a family business.  Steve is a commercial builder and renovated the building and Dr. Scheller licensed the brand-new facility through the state and created the entire clinical program, starting in 2017.  In terms of treatment protocols, Dr. Scheller and her clinical team focus on a trauma-informed model of treatment which first pinpoints the patient's trauma and reason for the patient's self-medicating behavior.  Dr. Scheller is trained in EMDR and regression hypnosis which are two techniques used to address trauma.  TF-CBT and the Seeking Safety group curriculum are two other ways Endless Mountains therapists address patient trauma. After the trauma is addressed and processed, patients receive an individualized treatment plan which can include but is not limited to: 12 step work, SMART recovery groups, Life Skills, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and DBT, Coping Skills, educational counseling and inventories, nutritional counseling and exercise, Reiki, daily meditation, breathwork, medication management and MAT, and a continued focus on mental health in conjunction with physical well-being This can be a lengthy but certainly worthwhile and successful process, which is why many patients stay at Endless Mountains anywhere from 30 days to 6 months.  Dr. Scheller believes that the most important aspect of treatment is to view mental health, physical health, and addiction together in order to appropriately and individually treat each patient. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/allbetter)
