You Might Know Her From

And we're back! Folks, after over 5 months of actress-less episodes, we are finally back with the iconic Lea Salonga. You Might Know Her From Aladdin, Mulan, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, and Broadway productions of  Here Lies Love, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, and Flower Drum Song. Lea was the coolest and gave us all the behind-the-scenes scoop on her Tony-winning turn as Kim in Miss Saigon, Madame Thenardier and the Broadway hat trick we hope to live to see, and whether playing Mouse's mom is a play on her legend status with the House of Mouse. All that plus, auditioning as both Jasmine and Fa Mulan, the secret Les Mis chorus track (and did Patti Lupone do it?), and her favorite drag queens. Anne and Damian, we twin flames writing this, are just pleased as ever to be back and interviewing actresses.

Deconstructing Disney

Episode SummaryErin and Rachel explore the mess of gender and culture in Mulan (1998), Disney's adaptation of an ancient Chinese legend. The plucky heroine promotes the “Girl Power” feminism that has fueled the female protagonists of most Disney Renaissance films, but does so in a way that manages to completely misrepresent Chinese culture and values. Spoiler alert: Chinese audiences did not love this movie. Episode BibliographyAbbott, J. (1998, June 21). FLORIDA ANIMATION STUDIO COMES OF AGE WITH MULAN. The Orlando Sentinel. Gender is a social construct.

Now she's starring in live-action projects like Hulu's new queer high school rom-com, CRUSH, in which she plays the hardworking and mysterious A.J. But before all of that, Auli'i saw herself in another mold-breaking Disney princess, Fa Mulan. We're so excited to bring you this very special episode just in time for our first ever MaxFunDrive! We are celebrating AAPI month here at What Would Mom Do Pod!And we are doing, in my opinion, the BEST Disney movie Princess, MULAN!The tagline:This time, the princess saves the prince.Mulan is a 1998 American animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation for Walt Disney Pictures. It is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, and was Disney's 36th animated feature and the ninth animated film produced and released during the Disney Renaissance. It was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, with story by Robert D. San Souci and screenplay by Rita Hsiao, Philip LaZebnik, Chris Sanders, Eugenia Bostwick-Singer, and Raymond Singer. Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer and BD Wong star in the English version, while Jackie Chan provided the voice of Captain Li Shang for the Chinese dubs of the film. The film's plot takes place in China during the Han dynasty, where Fa Mulan, daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou, impersonates a man to take her father's place during a general conscription to counter a Hun invasion.Enjoy this week's episode!

Episode Twenty-Four sees us musing over the inspirational tale of Fa Mulan (specifically the Disney version) and wondering if this is possibly the origin story of one of China's most formidable Empresses? Both Wu Zetian and Empress Cixi have mysterious pasts, is it possible one of them (or both of them) took up their father's armor and fought against one of China's many, many enemies? Prepare for a lot of history (and complaining about anachronisms) in this one!

The Way through Baguazhang -

Compared to humans, most animals live in the now. Even if their concerns are for the coming winter and being able to survive it, they still pretty much are mentally and emotionally in the here and now. Humans on the other hand are always thinking about a better tomorrow or fearing it, while spending most of their energy trying to get back to the past and living the way life used to be. So I am glad on a number of levels that when it comes to physics, time travel for the most part, is a mechanical impossibility. Because if it were possible, we humans would totally fuck things up. For most people can't even handle multiple opinions and need just one view, one vision, one reality. And it is in this mind-frame that the beauty of Qin Shi Huangdi 秦始皇帝, the first emperor of China shines through: All under heaven, one land, one country, one people, one everything! When we practice Baguazhang, the constant whirling and twirling around, trains the brain to stay alert from multiple angles while mentally stitching together a quilt that makes visual sense out of a patchwork of confusing signals. Done repeatedly over a long period of time, this ability to sow seemingly conflicting ideas and paths into one Wayland that can be understood, gets incorporated into other areas of our lives that might have nothing to do with martial arts. When this happens to a master of Baguazhang, a lot of what the master says, starts to sound like grey when the question was black or white. And that is just the start to the proverbial "There is no black or white" answer. To give an example: There are many versions of the Fa Mulan story. There is the Disney animated version which is different to the live action version. Both are different to the original Chinese poem. And none match the Wuxia versions floating around. To most people, only one of them is the right version with all others being wrong. There is only one Mulan in one universe. Case closed. However, to the Baguazhang master, all versions are correct and all versions get read or watched. Each Mulan exists in its own reality. And by doing them all, the brain compares notes on their similarities and differences (however tiny) so that when something in our own world is "off", we become highly sensitive to those changes before it becomes a major issue. Thereby allowing us time to quietly adjust without alerting others because a lot of the events that affect the world now are only the tangible proof manifestations of what's been going on for years under the cover. It is this Baguazhang ability that allows us to jump between different opposing realities like a game of draughts or checkers, without the weird multi-dimensional paradoxes that are so popular amongst sci-fi writers. Going back to the Fa Mulan example, what we are looking for is: If Mulan's world has these cultural and physical parameters governing it, the Mulan's life would most likely be like 'x'. And by extension, if I were living in 'y' country, doing roughly what I'm doing now, my life would only change by 'z' amount. Therefore, it would be reasonable to assume, given that humans like a fair degree of certainty, my life wouldn't change that much. Unless an unforeseen factor is brought in to disrupt it like an act of God event. That whole last statement is both reassuring and disappointing at the same time, because more epic shit is on its way — each event being a step up from the next. May God have mercy on us all.

The Way through Baguazhang -

With the ascent of coffee, for a lot of people, tea 茶 was relegated to a quiet drink in the afternoon shared with nobody. Or tea 茶 drunk quietly at home in the evening; in private. In those quiet moments alone, a lot of people are actually in their way practicing Tea Time equals Me Time, even if they didn't realise it. It is in these private moments that some of our daily pressure can come off and we are able to unwind, let go and de-stress in a gentle way. And when ready, take an account of wars we've been through. While I cannot speak much on the female side of things, for a lot of men the pressure to save-face, be-a-man and win against the odds can take their toll: Mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. I got reminded of the importance of Tea Time equals Me Time just the other night during a family reading session of Mulan 花木蘭. Not the Disney version, nor the traditional Chinese version but another version which should have been called... Mulan 花木蘭 goes to War and what she learnt there: Leadership Lessons for the Aspiring Business Woman. And what I learnt was that in the worst of times, sometimes that simple cup of tea 茶 is all that we have to keep us going. A small break, allowing us to rest and make sense of it all. Wars will come and go. And we don't always get a chance to celebrate our victories, no matter how good we are... Going hard all the time will make us brittle, unfeeling and uncaring. This is one of the reasons why so many martial artists eventually quit before reaching their peak - never to self-realize their inner warrior. Mulan 花木蘭 drank her cup of tea 茶. And she returned home victorious. I know from experience that business and life isn't so simple. It just grinds on and on and on. Until we demand enough is enough and say: You know what? I'm going to make myself a cup of tea. Let that be the start of a new direction! Liked what you heard & want to connect with me? Join me at… linkedin.com/in/peterhainzl/

One of Sarah's favorite Disney Films of all time is Mulan, a 1998 American animated musical action-comedy-drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation based on the Chinese legend of Fa Mulan. The 36th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics, it was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, with story by Robert D. San Souci and screenplay by Rita Hsiao, Philip LaZebnik, Chris Sanders, Eugenia Bostwick-Singer, and Raymond Singer. Ming-Na, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer and BD Wong star in the English version, while Jackie Chan provided his voice for the Chinese dubs of the film. The film's plot takes place during the Han Dynasty, where Fa Mulan, daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou, impersonates a man to take her father's place during a general conscription to counter a Hun invasion.--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/southarcadia/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/southarcadia/support
