On this episode of the Openwork podcast, we look at luxury pricing. Of course, we've already done a deep dive on how watches are priced. (Check out our episode with Mike Margolis of Czapek and Singer Reimagined for that.) However, in the past, we've largely focused on how inputs like cost of labor, materials, inflation and currency exchange impact pricing. But there's of course more that goes into pricing for watches and luxury goods more broadly. There are considerations like brand value, product positioning as well as consumer psychology that also impact pricing. And that's what we explore today – those other more nebulous, but equally significant, inputs into pricing. To help us with that we have the perfect guest: Katharine K. Zarrella is a writer, editor, and the Fashion Critic-at-Large at Document Journal. With a background as Fashion Director at the Wall Street Journal's Off Duty section and as a lecturer at Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins, she has contributed to numerous renowned publications, including Harper's Bazaar, The Business of Fashion, and most recently The New York Times, where she recently published the guest essay: Obscene Prices, Declining Quality: Luxury Is in a Death Spiral. Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology, Openwork goes inside the watch industry. You can find us online at collectivehorology.com. Fast fashion has a crisis on its hands. The industry is wreaking havoc on the environment, and even the execs are starting to notice. Massive amounts of pollution and textile waste have taken a toll on the planet as these shops continue to send runway styles to mainstream markets in record time. The bargains keep consumers coming back for more, but how long can it last? And what will it take to change the habits of shoppers used to getting the latest trends for cheap? To unpack fast fashion and its future, we spoke with Rachel Tashjian, Fashion Critic at GQ, who's written extensively about the fashion world and its relationship with the environment. We'll explore the dilemmas facing the space today, and some of the ways the industry and the consumers are working toward building a more sustainable closet. Vanessa Friedman sees the fashion world from a vantage point few others can as the Fashion Director and Chief Fashion Critic at the New York Times. She arrived there after pioneering roles covering fashion at Financial Times in a first-ever role there, InStyle, Vogue, Vanity Fair, the New Yorker, and Elle. She shares the industry's forays into sustainability---or responsible fashion in her terms---as well as sharing her thoughts on it.Right off the bat she talked about reducing consumption, which I differentiate from reusing and recycling, which most people jump to, but I consider tactical. Reducing is strategic. Harder to get at first, but leads to easier life and work.I was awkward, as I don't know the fashion world, but you can hear from her that environmental responsibility is catching on in fashion. Barely so far, but in some places at least authentically and growing. It looks like there's hope in the industry, though they have a long way to go, a lot of resistance, and many players acting in the opposite direction.I'm also glad to hear Vanessa's personal attention, thoughtfulness, interest, which all sounded heartfelt, thorough, and genuine. At the New York Times she's at a leverage point so I suspect she will influence. I like that celebrities are acting because, however small that change, they influence others. I believe they can help change culture. How Vanessa Friedman Became One of the Foremost Critics in the Fashion Industry See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This intro is going to be a very short one. Basically, I want to jump right in and let you all listen for yourself as the French fashion critic Carine Bizet, who is not one to live her life as an open book on Instagram, finally gives us a glimpse into her life in fashion. Carine is one of only a handful of true “take no prisoners”, speak truth to power fashion writers working in the industry. Well, actually she is no longer working in the industry. Earlier this year, after building a name for herself at Madame Figaro and leaving an indelible black ink mark on Le Monde with her must-read fashion reviews as the renowned French newspaper’s lead fashion journalist, she quietly, with no fan fair or big send-off, decided to leave it all behind. After decades of working at the epicenter of the fashion universe, sitting in the front row at ALL of the shows and interviewing every designer under the sun...that she found worth profiling….Carine decided to start her second act, working in a totally different field. Yes, a creative one, but still a 180-degree change from her career as a writer. So I felt this was the perfect time to speak with her. To have a no holds barred discussion about what got her interested in fashion in the first place, the current state of the industry, and where she thinks it will go. And why, when she was at the top of her game she decided to walk away from it all to chase a new dream. Full disclosure. I have known Carine for years and I feel that I can say without a doubt that, in a world where superficial friendships are part of the game, she is ride or die. Carine is one you can count on. She will give it to you straight, whether you are one of her closest friends, a designer, or a billion-dollar fashion house. Just on a technical side note, I did want to let all you listeners know that Carine and I did our interview over Zoom Video. So don’t be surprised by a couple of very minor audio issues. And now I am going to turn it over to Carine, because if there is one thing I love to do is listen to her tell it like it is.

Samson and Qamar Titus were both born and raised in Pakistan as the fourth generation Christians. Their great grandparents converted from Sikh religion in the early 1900’s, when John Nelson Hyde (more commonly known as Praying Hyde) was preaching through India. Both accepted Jesus Christ as their savior and were baptized in Pakistan. According to the Pakistani tradition their parents arranged their marriage in 1989. They attended All Nations Christian College in London, England and returned to Pakistan in 1991 to work with the tribal (Bheel) people in southern Pakistan. In 1994 they came to United States of America and were ordained to be ministers of the Gospel in 1995. They set up the mission’s office to raise much needed financial support for the work in Pakistan. When (Qamar’s Father) Dr. William Daniel passed away in 1996, it placed them in the leadership position to oversee the work in Pakistan and raise financial support. In addition to the work in Pakistan; they teach seminars/conferences on Cross Cultural Outreach, as well as minister in prayer and counseling as the Lord is bringing so many needy people across their path. The concept of mink is offering beautiful pieces of merchandise at affordable price points. The way I see it, the amount of times wearing an outfit after being photographed in it are slim to none. I want the consumer to feel good about their purchases and not guilty about the price. Each piece of merchandise sold is offered in limited quantity because I want each person to feel unique and one of a kind wearing their pieces, knowing not everyone has it! The merchandise is hand picked- which, amazingly, coordinates with each piece in the collection. I would like to think the pieces I purchase are influenced by my style. I think it is important to look effortlessly chic and comfortable." http://www.minkscollection.com

Brian Avery and his wife, Marina, have three children with stunning academic credentials, each tracking toward rewarding careers. After entertaining questions about how their children performed so well, and listening to dismissals that not everyone can be a genius, the author is sharing the approach he and his wife took. He is an environmental manager for a steel company in Alabama. Both he and his wife have a formal education in engineering. The book, Raising Genius, focuses on preparing children for a globally competitive economy wherein specific disciplines are highly rewarded. Helping prepare children for options in tomorrow’s world is the key objective. With a little effort, guidance, and assistance on your part, life options for your child can be dramatically improved. Raising Genius is an intentional misnomer. Many might dismiss your child’s academic and career success as the result of having a genius IQ, but this is not usually the case. Often what we see as “genius” is the result of focused and applied work over time. In Raising Genius, the author provides methods, guidance, and strategy to help parents set their children up for academic and career success … success that will enhance options for your child. http://www.amazon.com/Raising-Genius-Brian-Avery/dp/1631358871

Allison Fagundes is the founder of BusteeLady, which makes fashionable and supportive clothing for busty women. Fashion is Allison’s calling. Attending FIDM and LMU helped land her careers in apparel manufacturing and costume design. As she developed the brand concept, a particularly humiliating, but now funny moment, catapulted Bustees into reality. Bustees promotes health and wellness and supports 2 causes, one of which Allison directly encountered, breast and thyroid cancer. Bustees designs bikinis with fit, fashion, as well as performance in mind. We want our clients to be beachside, or poolside, and only be focused on enjoying themselves as well as reveling in the fact they look fabulous! If a customer wearing our product goes to the beach and decides she wants to be a part of a pick-up game of volleyball, she will be left without a doubt knowing her curves are secure, properly supported, and she won’t have to worry about anything “popping out to say hello” no matter how active her day becomes. Bustees bikinis mimic the support of a brassiere, while maintaining better dimensional stability through the layering of performance textiles. In fusing these two ideas, you end up with an impressive product that will last. https://busteelady.com/

Pam Shainhouse, Alli Style. Allistyle was the brainchild of Alli Shapiro who along with Pam Shainhouse, her mother, realized that there was little available for the plus size market that was not cheap, frumpy, made of polyester and from outside of Canada. At the time of inception, Alli had been suffering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma since 1999 experiencing different bouts of weight gain and loss. She had difficulty finding clothing that she would wear and even cried when she went shopping. Alli passed away in July 2006, leaving Pam with the vision to continue on her legacy. Four years later, Pam began working on Allistyle, and when Whitney Thompson, the winner of America’s Next Top Model, signed on to become the face of the line, the line began to take flight. Throughout the past year Allistyle has moved from just producing plus size to producing all sizes. We believe that “great style has no size”. Our Brand is inclusive natural intelligent fashion. Allistyle is made in Canada, with the fabric imported from the Orient. The viscose from bamboo and organic cotton fabric is milled in Canada. The characteristics of the line are simplicity, comfort, and sophistication, travel friendly and classic. Allistyle does not advocate large shapeless dressing, but clothing that hugs your curves providing a gorgeous silhouette. http://www.allistyle.com/

Debbie McAlester started Cheyenne's Designs about 6 years ago, she wanted to make a product that everyone could afford. Mineral makeup is so good for one's skin and she wanted to try it, but couldn't afford it. She knew she wasn't the only one, so her journey began. McAlester started making soaps because one must have a clean face before putting makeup on, especially mineral makeup. So, the research started for facial soaps, too. The line has expanded from just a few makeup items to a full range of mineral makeup and soaps and perfumes, candles, wax tarts and even makeup brushes. www.cheyennesdesigns.com (662)640-9482
