Under cover of his signature top hat and distinctive moustache, Lewis Wilson has accomplished more than most people dream of. His list of achievements includes success as a glass art instructional video producer, demonstrating lampworking artist, promoter of the world's largest hot glass competition, and founding member of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers. A fixture at glass bead and pipe shows, “Looie” is also a fire-eating juggler, knife swallower and a black belt in karate. In his Crystal Myths gallery, you'll find everything from goblets and vases to birds and dinosaurs. The fantasy realm is where this artist draws much of his inspiration. Being from New Mexico, it is only fitting that Wilson is also known for glass sculptures of Native American ceremonial dancers. The intricately costumed pieces have not only become prized additions to private collections, but were also given as official presentations from the state of New Mexico to visiting dignitaries such as King Juan Carlos of Spain, blues legend Bo Diddley, and Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Born in 1949 in Roswell, New Mexico, Wilson was part of a military family that moved frequently to places such as Dallas, Texas, then Morroco, North Africa, and on to Riverside, California. In 1960, 11-year-old Wilson moved with his family to Goose Bay, Canada, where he taught himself how to eat fire, juggle, throw knives and do various magic and circus tricks. In 1963 following a move to Albuquerque, New Mexico, he started learning Shotokan karate, receiving his first-degree black belt in 1969. Joining the United States Air Force in 1970, Wilson was a medic during the Vietnam war, stationed at Cocoa Beach, Florida. During the slow hours of the night, he taught himself about glass through an old scientific glass blowing book he found in the Air Force base library. The medical lab was his studio and a Bunsen burner his equipment. There he made intricately woven animal figurines from 4 mm Pyrex stirring rods. Wilson's first real lessons in glass blowing came in 1973 under the tutelage of Alfonso and Tomas Arribas who had reportedly caught the attention of Walt Disney when the brothers represented Spain at the 1964–‘65 New York World's Fair. Wilson talked them into an apprenticeship at the Crystal Arts on Main Street, U.S.A at Disneyworld where he made thousands of crabs, teapots and birdbaths for the tourists. Mexican glass blower Miguil Bonilla, who also worked for Disney, was another of his mentors. Upon leaving the Air Force in 1974, Wilson went the following day to Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida, to try to secure a job as a glassblower. There were no glassblowing openings, however they did have a vacancy for a juggler and fire-eater. For the next two years he worked with tattooed belly dancers, a magician, and an organ grinder and his monkey. Later that year, Wilson married, and his family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he opened his glass business, Crystal Myths. In 1993, Wilson produced his first glassworking video, Glass Bead Making, and now has produced more than 20 titles. In 1996, Crystal Myths promoted its first show, The Best Bead Show, in Tucson, Arizona, earning him the nickname of “the P.T. Barnum of Beadmakers.” In 2002, Wilson promoted the world's largest hot glass competition called the Albuquerque Flame-Off. There, 300 glass workers from the U.S. and Canada worked on six torches running for 12 hours a day for two days. In 2005, Wilson demonstrated at the Kobe International Lampworking Festival in Kobe, Japan, and only spoke Japanese, which he taught himself, during the demo. Later that year, a building was named after him at Art Glass Invitational in September, one of the highlights of his career. Wilson sold the Best Bead Shows in 2008, re-emerging as a talented artist able to concentrate fully on lampworking. Later that year, at the Oakland ISGB convention, he was presented with the Hall of Flame Award. In 2011, Wilson married glass artist Barbara Svetlick with whom he founded Soft Glass Invitational, promoted for two years in Hilliards, Pennsylvania. In 2015, the event was given to Kris Schaible, and she continues to promote the event. These days, Wilson spends the bulk of his time filling commissions and doing standard production work, with the remainder dedicated to new designs. He and his wife enjoy collaborating, which comprises about 10 percent of each artist's work. With Svetlick's flowers added to Wilson's glass sculpture or her sculpture incorporating his beads, the artwork benefits from the best of both worlds.

Ocean Robbins, was born a changemaker. Recently, his Dad John Robbins (author of Diet for a New America and other great books) was on the podcast, and the response from that episode was overwhelming. Many of you wrote in to say just how moved you were by John's authenticity and his willingness to walk away from the Baskin Robbins fortune to forge his own “rocky road” of happiness without the strappings of running a multi-million dollar company that simply didn't align with his values. John and his wife built a one-room cabin in Canada and had a son. That son, now 48-year-old, Oceans is “a chocolate chip” off the old block of his father. As co-founder and CEO of The Food Revolution Network, Ocean thrives as an active author, activist, educator, and speaker. His goal? To educate and inspire people to bring their life and food choices more in alignment with their values to create a more healthy and loving world. From his very first peace rally at the age of seven, to his own natural bakery business at the age of 10, all the way through his non-profits and speaking tours in high school and beyond, it's obvious that Ocean is living his purpose to be a beacon of love and kindness - hoping to bridge the gaps that separate us and, instead, shine a bright light on our commonalities as humans and stewards of this wonderful earth. Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecue Presented by Adrian Miller Food Writer, Attorney, Certified Barbecue Judge Join us as James Beard Award-winning author Adrian Miller discusses the history of African American barbecue culture from his book, Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecue. Black Smoke describes how African Americans inherited a type of cooking that fused Native American meat smoking and European grilling techniques that became known as “barbecue.” By the early 1800s, African Americans were firmly established as barbecue’s “go to” cooks. Black Smoke further explores different aspects of African American barbecue culture. You’ll find out how barbecue permeated plantation culture and spread with slavery. You’ll see the ways that African Americans made barbecue an essential part of social life in the rural South whether in religious life, politics, or special occasions. You’ll see how African Americans became barbecue’s most effective ambassadors by giving those outside the South a taste of southern barbecue as freelance caterers at special events and restaurant entrepreneurs who settled in new communities during “The Great Migration.” For generations, African Americans gave people of all types their first taste of barbecue. To accentuate this phenomenal history, Black Smoke profiles sixteen men and women who epitomized barbecue excellence. Ocean Robbins is an impassioned food revolutionary, author, public speaker, facilitator, father, dancer, movement builder and transformational social change leader. Co-founder and CEO of the 500,000+ member Food Revolution Network, one of the largest communities of healthy eating advocates on the planet, Ocean is author of 31-Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, and Transform Your World (2019). He has held hundreds of live seminars and events that have touched millions of lives in 190 nations. He is on a mission to transform the industrialized food culture into one that celebrates and supports healthy people and a healthy planet. Ocean’s work focuses on the two fronts of advancing public policy and speaking directly to people about choosing healthy eating habits. He inspires people to look at how their food choices can make a lasting difference in the world, believing strongly that, “We are everyday food revolutionaries with our knives and forks.” He is passionate about real, healthy, fair trade, natural, sustainable, local, plant-strong and delicious food. Ocean’s family’s story is an amazing story of health and transformation. His grandfather, Irvine Robbins, co-founded Baskin-Robbins (31 flavors) ice cream. His father, John Robbins, grew up swimming in an ice-cream-cone-shaped swimming pool and being groomed to join the family company. When John was in his twenties, John’s uncle who had co-founded Baskin-Robbins with Irvine, suffered a heart attack and died in his early fifties. So John decided that he couldn’t spend his life working for a company that could contribute to making people sick, contributing to obesity, heart disease and diabetes. John walked away from the company and the family wealth. The family says that John followed his own “rocky road”. So Ocean’s father John moved to an island off the coast of Canada with his wife (Ocean’s mother) Deo, where they built a one-room log cabin. This is where Ocean was born and spent his first ten years. His parents lived simply, grew most of their own food, living on less than $500 per year, and practiced yoga and meditation for several hours every day. In 1984 Ocean’s family moved to California where John began work on his bestseller, Diet for a New America, and became a renowned health advocate. At a young age Ocean started running marathons with his father. When Ocean’s grandfather became ill with heart disease, diabetes and other health problems, his doctor recommended that he read and follow the advice in his son John’s book. Irvine Robbins, the founder of an ice cream empire, started to follow his son’s advice, which included giving up ice cream, and lived another 18 healthy years. If Ocean’s grandfather could give up ice cream, Ocean thinks there’s hope for the rest of us. His own family has witnessed the powerful impact that healthy eating can have on our ability to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. He sees his father as an example of what can happen when we truly follow and stand for our values, when we walk our walk. Following in his father’s footsteps, Ocean was inspired from a young age to reach out to his own generation, making his own indelible mark on the world. But his commitment was not without challenges, as he often felt disconnected from the people around him, including his peers, because of his strong stance on not eating animals. He learned compassion at a turning point in his young life when his father helped him to explore what it means to be true to one’s integrity and passion in a way that is congruent with all of humanity, with people wherever they may be on their path. His father taught him that all people and all choices deserve to be listened to, to be respected, and to be loved. John quoted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr to his young son to drive home this message: “You have no moral authority with those who can feel your underlying contempt.” Since that turning point he has pondered what it means to release contempt and to stand with compassion for all life. As Ocean became aware that the American way of eating was being exported around the world at a heavy cost to the health of people around the world and to the planet, he joined forces directly with his father to launch The Food Revolution Network. Ocean explains that a “revolution” is needed because there is no longer time for a little less toxic food, stating that “our modern food system is financially profitable for a few but has become morally bankrupt.” It is contributing to illnesses in epidemic proportion, is cruel to farm workers and animals, and is unsustainable for the planet and lethal to millions of people. Ocean’s efforts on behalf of a better world have been honored by the Giraffe Project (for people who stick their necks out for what they believe in), the National Alliance for Animals (The Compassionate Youth Award), EarthSave (Volunteer of the Year Award), the Freedom’s Flame Award, the national Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service by an Individual 35 Years or Younger, and the Harmon Wilkinson Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Social Sciences. .Both Time and Audubon magazines chose him as among the heroes of the new millennium. Ocean has mentored and learned from some of the world’s most inspiring change makers. His earlier published books include: Choices for Our Future: A Generation Rising for Life on Earth (1994), The Power of Partnership: Building Healthy Bridges Across Historic Divides (2009), and Voices of the Food Revolution (2013, co-authored with his father John Robbins). For every new copy that is sold of his latest book, 31 Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, and Transform Your World, he has pledged to donate to Trees for the Future so that they can plant an organic fruit or nut tree in a low-income community. Ocean has served on the Board of Directors of Friends of the Earth, Creating Our Future, and EarthSave International. He is a founding member of the Turning Tide Coalition, co-founder of the Leveraging Privilege for Social Change program, and a founding convener of Leverage Alliance, both of which convene privileged young leaders and support them in their commitment to positive social impact. He and his father provide a forum for leading health and nutrition experts to reach hundreds of thousands of individuals through the Food Revolution Summit. Ocean is a living embodiment of his message to the world: “When you bring any area of your life into alignment with your values, your life takes on a potency, and a beauty, that you never could previously have imagined.”

The Food Revolution http://learntruehealth.com/food-revolution/ Ocean Robbins' Food Revolution Network Food is not just a commodity - it's also a community. Ocean Robbins expounds in this episode on why becoming informed about your food is an act of liberation and empowerment for yourself and your world. Today's guest is going to blow you away. In fact, his family has probably touched your life in some way. If you've eaten one of the delicious 31 flavors of ice creams that Baskin Robbins serves, then his grandfather has affected your life. Ocean Robbins is my guest today, and I am so inspired he dedicated his life to helping people to live a healthy life through sustained agriculture and a whole foods diet. He is also on a mission to save the planet. Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Empire Ocean Robbins' grandfather founded an ice cream company called Baskin Robbins and Ocean Robbins' dad John, grew up with an ice cream-shaped swimming pool in the backyard. He was groomed from early childhood to one day join in and run the company. John Robbins invented the Jamoca Almond Fudge flavor and a lot of other flavors. But he walked away from running the business and followed his path. One of the primary emphasis for that was that his uncle, Burt Baskin, who was Ocean Robbins' grandfather's brother-in-law and business partner, was dying of heart attack. He died at the age of 54. "My dad's uncle Burt was one of the most successful entrepreneurs in American history. He seemed to have everything, but he didn't have his health," shared Robbins. "That was an eye-opener for my Dad." Moving To Canada After a few years, Ocean Robbins' dad moved to Canada with his mom and built a one-room log cabin. They practiced yoga and meditation for several hours a day and named their kid Ocean. "I grew up monetarily poor, but I grew up with healthy food and a lot of energy. I ran my first marathon when I was ten years old," Robbins recalls. Diet For A New America When Ocean Robbins was 12 years old, his dad started working on a book called 'Diet for a New America' which came out in 1987. It became a runaway bestseller. It's about how our food choices affect our health and happiness. Ocean Robbins says the media had a blast that time. They called his dad 'The Rebel Without The Cone,' because of this would-be ice cream heir, became an advocate for healthy food. Ocean Robbins' grandfather was initially devastated that he didn't take over the company and ended up selling the business. He was bitter when he retired and blamed my dad for it. Turning A New Leaf In 1990, Robbins' grandfather had severe health problems --- diabetes, high blood pressure and weight issues. His doctors told him he didn't have long to live unless he read this book and followed its advice. It turns out that the book doctors wanted Robbins' grandfather to read was the one written by Robbins' father. So he read the book and got incredible results. He then lived for another 18 years. Robbins' grandfather cut down on meat consumption, stopped eating sugar and ice cream. He ate a lot more vegetables and whole foods. Drive To Help Others "We've seen in our family, what can happen when we follow the standard American diet. And we have also seen what can occur when we make a change," said Robbins. "So that drives me to want to help people." At the age of 16, Robbins ended up co-founding an organization called YES! (Youth for Environmental Sanity) that he directed for the next 20 years. "Everywhere I went, I saw how people eat and the impact it had on their health. More people were suffering from chronic disease," said Robbins. Eventually, Robbins decided to work with his dad and help take this food revolution message to the modern era. He wanted to use the online technology, so they launched The Food Revolution Network in 2012. Robbins says they reached more than a million people through their live online event. Here they saw that all over the world, people are hungry for change. They are fed up with toxic food. "People are so sick of being sick. They want to change their lives. And that gives me immense hope," Robbins said. "I can see how toxic our food system has become, but I also see how much better they can be with the change." Medical Doctor Turned Believer Robbins narrates that there's a practicing physician in Oregon named Pat who was 50 pounds overweight. He had several health issues. Then he participated in Robbins' food revolution event and learned about whole foods plant-based diet. He changed his diet, got off medication and lost 50 pounds. After that, he went as far as changing his medical practice from focusing on health rather than pills. "Honestly, Pat is struggling to make it work financially as a doctor. Because he doesn't have too many patients anymore since they don't need him anymore," Robbins revealed. And insurance companies reimburse based on pills and surgery. They don't reimburse based on spending an hour talking to a patient about nutrition. But according to Robbins, Pat is committed to figuring out a way to make it work financially to do the right thing. Because now that he understands what's at stake, it's not acceptable to him to spend his life profiting off a system that is dependent on sick care. Alarming Statistics The Naturopathic model of health is that symptoms are not healthy. These symptoms are the language of the body talking to us. "Three-quarters of medical expenses in the United States goes towards managing lifestyle-caused chronic illness," Robbins said. He added, "Medical costs are the leading cause of bankruptcy for families. The cost of Medicare in the United States is expected to double in the next generation." Meanwhile, the federal government provides billions of dollars a year in subsidy for so-called commodity crops like corn, wheat, and soy, that are processed into high fructose syrup, white flour and animal feeds for factory farms. So we are subsidizing the very things that science tells us we should be eating less off. Not to mention, it is destroying our environment. They are the leading source of climate change. The Food Revolution Network "There is some effort involved if you want to change. It takes time, energy and attention to make a new habit," said Robbins. We only have a small amount of willpower. Most of what we do in our life is out of habit. Creating change takes some attention. Robbins says that The Food Revolution Network is about a movement. A movement in our lives and a movement in our world. Ultimately, we want real food. The top barrier people face is time, money and confusion about what is healthy and what is not. Furthermore, Robbins says we need to create other ways in having speed and convenience in eating real food. Like cooking in bulk or food sharing programs. Consequently, choosing healthy food is maybe the best financial decision you made in your life. It will save you money in medical costs and increase your productivity. Save Money While Eating Healthy Minimize eating out. Making your food is cheaper and healthier. We need to eat less processed sugar, white flour, and carbs. Avoid eating factory farm animal products and dairy. Eat more legumes, vegetable, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. If you will eat animal products, chose wild fish. Stick with your shopping list. Avoid impulse purchases. Plan on what meals to cook. "Whether or not you ever go to foodrevolution.org, you are a part of us every time you choose real food over processed food," Robbins said. "Every time you get informed, inspired and empowered, you are part of The Food Revolution." Ocean Robbins is co-founder & CEO of the 450,000+ member Food Revolution Network.
