Caryn Riswold believes that conversations about vocation should give greater attention to issues of social justice, identity, and culture. As a professor of religion at Wartburg College, she reminds us that our callings help us to “be human together, better.”  In this conversation, Caryn describes how her own dual callings as teacher and public theologian help her pursue such goals. But she also suggests that asking good questions is a key for discerning whether our words shed “heat or light” on important and difficult topics in ways that empower others.

I have a Christmas and Hanukah gift for you: my show with Stephen Dunn. This is one of my favorite shows and he was one of my favorite poets. He published something like 21 collections of poetry. The show you're about to hear from 2001, the first time he was a guest on the show. Writers on Writing was on the radio then. Podcasting wouldn't be along for four more years and it would be a number of years—I've lost track—before my cohost Marrie Stone joined us.   I first learned of Dunn back in the early 1980s. I was on a bus in San Francisco, looking up at the placards that lined the roof of the bus and there was a poem of his. It may have been his poem, “Contact,” which he reads during the following interview. Back then the City posted poetry on MUNI busses (I think it's doing that again). Dunn and I never met in person but he graced me and the show with his presence a half dozen times. Stephen Dunn was born on June 24, 1939, in Forest Hills, Queens. He graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1957. He earned a BA in history and English from Hofstra University, attended the New School Writing Workshops, and finished his MA in creative writing at Syracuse University. Dunn's books of poetry include the posthumous collection The Not Yet Fallen World (W. W. Norton, 2022); Pagan Virtues (W. W. Norton, 2019); Lines of Defense (W. W. Norton, 2014); Here and Now: Poems (W. W. Norton, 2011); What Goes On: Selected and New Poems 1995-2009 (W. W. Norton, 2009); Everything Else in the World (W. W. Norton, 2006); Local Visitations (W. W. Norton, 2003); Different Hours (W. W. Norton, 2000), winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry; Loosestrife (W. W. Norton, 1996), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; New and Selected Poems: 1974–1994(W. W. Norton, 1994); Landscape at the End of the Century (W. W. Norton, 1991); Between Angels (W. W. Norton, 1989); Local Time (William Morrow & Co., 1986), winner of the National Poetry Series; Not Dancing (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 1984); Work & Love (HarperCollins, 1981); A Circus of Needs (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 1978); Full of Lust and Good Usage (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 1976); and Looking For Holes In the Ceiling (University of Massachusetts Press, 1974). He is also the author of Walking Light: Memoirs and Essays on Poetry (BOA Editions, 2001), and Riffs & Reciprocities: Prose Pairs (W. W. Norton, 1998). About Dunn's work, the poet Billy Collins has written: The art lies in hiding the art, Horace tells us, and Stephen Dunn has proven himself a master of concealment. His honesty would not be so forceful were it not for his discrete formality; his poems would not be so strikingly naked were they not so carefully dressed. Dunn's other honors include the Academy Award for Literature, the James Wright Prize, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. He has taught poetry and creative writing and held residencies at Wartburg College, Wichita State University, Columbia University, University of Washington, Syracuse University, Southwest Minnesota State College, Princeton University, and University of Michigan. Dunn has worked as a professional basketball player, an advertising copywriter, and an editor, as well as a professor of creative writing. Dunn was the distinguished professor of creative writing at Richard Stockton College and lived in Frostburg, Maryland with his wife, the writer Barbara Hurd. He passed away on June 25, 2021. He won a Pulitzer Prize for Different Hours, the focus for our talk on this day in 2001. We also talk about the poets' state of mind, writing poems during and after the moment, existing in the world of ambiguity, being a retrospective poet, how his focus has changed over the years, how he taught poetry, good training for a poet, hearing from readers, National Poetry Month, and more. Mike Jensen, Professor of Vocal Music at Wartburg College, was an extremely active man in his late-thirties when a tonic-clonic seizure, formerly known as a grand mal seizure, struck out of nowhere—leaving him and his wife, Jennifer, searching for answers. Raising kids, in the midst of a demanding career, and with a high-deductible insurance policy, Mike pushed off the doctor's visit, and chalked it up to an isolated event. Months later, the diagnosis of brain cancer seemed absurd when the family received the news. Having the support of their entire community, the Jensen family vowed to never give up, and they planned to defeat the brain cancer. Mike Jensen ultimately lost his battle with brain cancer, and he was called Home on Friday, September 30, 2022, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer. Hear the extreme strength it took to never give up, despite the grim conditions. As we reveal that no matter the circumstances we're dealt, we still have the ability to write our own fairytale ending.

France held out for a 2-1 win that sent the defending champions back to the semifinals and England home. Penalties have cost the Three Lions time and again at major tournaments. They have lost shootouts on seven occasions in World Cups and European Championships since 1990. It didn’t come down to that against France. But Kane still faced a test of nerve from the spot when standing over the ball in the 84th minute. FIFA – Mbappé to face good friend Hakimi in World Cup semifinal Kylian Mbappé is going to meet his good friend Achraf Hakimi again at this World Cup. The France star went to visit his Paris Saint-Germain teammate at the Morocco team hotel in downtown Doha last week. Mbappé will be marked by Hakimi in a World Cup semifinal on Wednesday. His path to Morocco’s goal down the French left wing blocked by a player he has called the best right-back in the world. Their friendship in Paris had bonded over music, video games and choreographed goal celebrations. Only one friend can advance to a World Cup final against Argentina or Croatia. FIFA – Ronaldo says his dream of winning World Cup has ‘ended’ Cristiano Ronaldo has said in a cryptic social media post that his dream of winning the World Cup with Portugal has ended. But he stopped short of announcing his retirement from international duty. The 37-year-old Ronaldo left the field in tears after Portugal lost 1-0 to Morocco in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Ronaldo said Sunday on Instagram in his first comments after the elimination that it was “time to take stock.” But he didn’t explicitly say if he wants to carry on being available for Portugal. Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in men’s international soccer with 118 goals. He said putting Portugal “on the highest level in the world” was his biggest dream. FIFA – After Neymar, Croatia aims to end Messi’s World Cup dream Croatia has already ended Neymar’s World Cup dream by beating Brazil in the quarterfinals. Now it hopes to do the same to Lionel Messi in the semifinals on Tuesday. The 2018 runner-up Croatia is the next obstacle for Argentina to overcome as Messi bids to win the one major trophy that has eluded him. Croatia was beaten by France in the final in Russia and is on its own mission to go one step further this time.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The death penalty is a controversial topic, especially for Christians--people who see the reign of God as one of forgivenss, restorative justice, and mercy. How do we reconcile ending someone's life with the all-encompassing grace and love of Jesus Christ? Today's guest, Dr. Jenny McBride, talks us through those conflicting concepts.Jenny is Associate Dean and Associate Professor at McCormick Theological Seminary. She was the Board of Regents Endowed Chair in Ethics at Wartburg College in Iowa and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Initiative in Religious Practices and Practical Theology at Emory University, where she served as program director for the Atlanta Theological Association's Certificate in Theological Studies at Metro State Prison for Women. Jenny's deep friendship with Kelly Gissendaner, Georgia's only female death-row inmate who was executed in September 2015, grew out of her experience as a professor in the certificate program. Jenny got to experience Kelly's deep and growing faith and walked with Kelly through the final moments of her life, reminding her that “Jesus is going to be with you.” Jenny's latest book, You Shall Not Condemn, tells Kelly's story through her own friendship with Jenny and other religious leaders and advocates. You Shall Not Condemn doesn't have a release date yet, but as soon as it does, we'll let you know on The Weight's social media.
