Today, let's acquire Wasim Munayyer's insights into the freight tech industry and its rising demand! Wasim shares his extensive experience in recruiting and logistics, the significance of industry knowledge for candidates entering tech companies, the positive momentum in freight tech-driven by factors like the re-industrialization of the United States, and his perspectives on recruitment trends!   About Wasim Munayyer Wasim started his career working for technology recruiting firms in his home state of New Jersey as well as one of the largest firms in NYC. Later he joined Yusen Logistics, tasked with driving corporate recruitment for their North America business. It was in those years Yusen still had 3 divisions; Domestic Transportation, Freight Forwarding, and Contract Logistics. Making over 200 hires in 2 years across 3 divisions offered a thorough introduction into multimodal logistics. Wasim also lead corporate recruiting at Ports America for 2 years, adding a layer of knowledge in terminal/port operations. Being on the client end of the recruiting firm relationship for 4 years in this industry, Wasim realized that the industry was evolving into a space that would demand technology driven supply chain talent and that there was not a search firm out there which offered this blended niche talent.   Connect with Wasim Website: https://munayyergroup.com/  Email: wasim@munayyergroup.com  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wasimmunayyer/

Today, let's tackle the current shipping and forwarding industry challenges with our guest, Sara Dandan! Sara covers disputes related to demurrage and detention fees, her focus on dispute resolution, the need for shippers to document all communications and transactions to navigate conflicts effectively, the varying roles of forwarders, the negotiation power of large shippers, and the ongoing challenges faced by drayage providers in collecting evidence for freight issues!   About Sara Dandan As a second-generation ocean freight forwarder, I've been immersed in logistics my entire life. As an ocean freight forwarder and supply chain consultant, I've handled the coordination and movement of thousands of ocean containers and air shipments, managing hundreds of millions of dollars in goods across global markets, performed internal audits at a major 3pl, and built out export operations and supply chain strategies for businesses of all sizes. Having proven my expertise in EAR, ITAR, and OFAC regulations I next immersed myself in years of study dedicated to the Shipping Act and maritime law and regulations. Now my focus is in resolving demurrage and detention and maritime disputes for shippers, truckers, and forwarders. Having been admitted to general practice before the Federal Maritime Commission as a non-attorney, I'm one of the rare professionals in the field who can combine deep regulatory knowledge with real-world experience when representing clients before the Commission. I founded my company with a clear mission: to make the maritime dispute process accessible to as many people as possible. Too often, shippers, drayage providers, and forwarders were shut out, left without recourse in a system stacked in favor of the carriers. I wanted to change that. By leveraging my deep knowledge of demurrage and detention, maritime regulations, and the shipping process as a freight forwarder; I fight to level the playing field and ensure an equitable supply chain for all.   Connect with Sara Website: https://fouroneone.io/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sara-d-0a344018/  Email: sara@fouroneone.io

This week's guest is Terry Donohoe, Senior Vice President of Freight Forwarding, U.S & Mexico for DP World. As most of us know, DP World is a leading global logistics company headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  They operate a large network of marine and inland terminals across more than 40 countries, handling approximately 10% of global container traffic.  In our conversation, Terry provides an overview of DP World as well as the global freight forwarding industry.  We discuss the impacts of the United States - Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) that superseded NAFTA, the challenges companies face in meeting changing and differing regulatory requirements across the globe, and DP World's evolution from a basic transport provider to an integrated solution provider moving product from “Factory Floor to Customer Door.”  Finally, we talk about the future of global trade.  As opposed to some pundits who have claimed that we have reached and passed “Peak-Global Trade”, Terry compares trade to water - in that, it always finds a way.

As the landscape of Japanese e-commerce undergoes a seismic shift, we're fortunate to have e-commerce experts Nick Katz and Gary Huang join us again to unpack the transformation. It's a world where Amazon goes toe-to-toe over local stalwart Rakuten, a surprising twist given the resilience of Japan's physical storefronts during a pandemic that skipped a full lockdown. Their insights shed light on Rakuten's gamble to step away from their cornerstone points program, a move that has sellers keenly watching the horizon for its ripple effects. Steering through the complexities of international logistics, this episode covers the strategic use of freight forwarding when entering the Japanese market, a journey our expert guests navigated firsthand. We dive into the benefits of Japan's proximity to China, the advantages of trade agreements with other Asian nations, and reminisce about the global hiccup caused by the Suez Canal crisis. These discussions are not just theoretical musings; they're actionable insights for bolstering your bottom line and carving out a niche in one of the world's most dynamic Amazon marketplaces. Finally, we celebrate the cultural tapestry that is Japanese business ethos, examining the surprising competitive edge that international sellers can unleash with astute analytics and Amazon product reviews. These narratives of success and support—from local sellers to global players—culminate in an invitation to an upcoming event in Okinawa, promising to be an epicenter for networking amongst the entrepreneurial elite. It's here where the theoretical becomes tangible, and where the future of selling in Amazon Japan takes shape before our very eyes. In the podcast interview, Martyn, Gary, and Joe discuss digital freight forwarding and importance of using technology to reduce cost, streamline functions and stay competitive in the increasingly tech-centric logistics space. Freight forwarding is one of the most difficult services within the logistics industry. The nature of freight forwarding is much more complicated because there are so many companies involved in the process including, but not limited to the shipper, receiver, multiple trucking carriers in multiple countries, customs brokers, customs officials, steamship lines, warehousing companies, and the receiver. These stakeholders speak different languages, live in different countries, different time zones and are governed by different laws. Magaya logistics tech solutions include: Digital freight portal - a branded, interactive digital experience with all the functions of a digital forwarder in a single solution. Supply chain - all-in-one solution for modern logistics and supply chain management. Rate management - modernize and optimize your freight rate data and processes with a single control tower for searching and comparing rates, managing margins, filing tariffs, responding to RFQs, and preparing winning quotes. CRM - Integrated with Magaya Supply Chain, this time-saving logistics CRM solution eliminates redundancies and fosters collaboration across sales and operations teams with greater visibility, streamlined processes, and built-in business intelligence. Customs compliance - accelerate, streamline, and simplify your compliance workflows with a cloud-based, ACE-certified ABI software solution for customs brokers, FTZ or CFS operators, and self-filers. Supply Chains Differ greatly by industry, but if there is one supply chain we have all been watching closely over the last year, it is the healthcare supply chain. During this time, UPS has been on a noble mission - playing an active role in distributing PPE, test kits, vaccines, and other necessarily materials despite the disruption caused by the pandemic. They have partnered with the government in addition to working with private industry, leveraging their air, road, and storage capabilities as needed. Dan Gagnon is the Vice President of Global UPS Healthcare Marketing and Strategy and Tim Fosnough is the Senior Director of UPS Global Freight Forwarding. They have each played a direct role in this effort, finding ways to scale up quickly, using their own resources as well as working through trusted third-party partnerships to increase their capacity for cold chain logistics. In this conversation, Dan and Tim join hosts Scott Luton and Greg White to share their stories of struggle and success: • The three key innovations that UPS either unveiled or strengthened in order to support the pandemic effort • Investments UPS has made to expand their healthcare-specific transportation and storage capabilities • The pride associated with realizing that the work they were doing on a daily basis was making a difference to people in the U.S. and abroad Additional Links & Resources: Learn more about Supply Chain Now: https://supplychainnow.com/program/supply-chain-now Subscribe to Supply Chain Now and all other Supply Chain Now programs: https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe (https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe) UPS Supply Chain Solutions Virtual Connect: https://hopin.com/events/supply-chain-virtual-connect-2?ref=b748cd994367#sponsors (https://hopin.com/events/supply-chain-virtual-connect-2?ref=b748cd994367#sponsors) Register for the 2021 Supply Chain Insights Global Summit: https://lnkd.in/dMYq3Rv (https://lnkd.in/dMYq3Rv) Register for the OMNIA Partners Connections Conference: https://bit.ly/3jHlwdv (https://bit.ly/3jHlwdv) WEBINAR- A Data-Driven Approach to Smarter Deals: https://bit.ly/2VYRQiD (https://bit.ly/2VYRQiD) WEBINAR- State of the Supply Chain Report – Priorities for Building Resiliency in Your Supply Network: https://bit.ly/2XIRZHf (https://bit.ly/2XIRZHf) 2021 Supply Chain and Procurement Awards: https://lnkd.in/gxp7bQy (https://lnkd.in/gxp7bQy) Download the 2021 Q2 U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index: https://bit.ly/3f1LO6S (https://bit.ly/3f1LO6S) This episode was hosted by Scott Luton and Greg White. Safety concerns have forced Ports of Auckland to suspend its automation progamme, after it lost control of a massive robotic straddle carrier that moves around shipping containers. In a statement it says a software fault saw the 70-tonne machine smacked one container into a stack of others. No one was hurt in the incident but programmes are suspended pending further investigation. The Port says it is increasing manual operations to keep freight moving. The beleaguered ports have been under the microscope over serious safety concerns and delays unloading freight. Freight Forwarding Basics with Miles Varghese Miles Varghese and Joe Lynch review and discuss freight forwarding basics. A freight forwarder is an agent in the supply chain whose objective is to organize a shipment, acting as the intermediary between the exporter or importer and transportation companies. About Miles Varghese Miles Varghese is the co-founder and CEO of Cargologik, an all-in-one transportation logistics collaboration software developed for freight forwarders. Prior to founding Cargologik, Miles was employee number three leading sales, and go-to-market strategies for Octopi Terminal Operating System (TOS), the first true SaaS TOS in the industry. Miles is a proud first-generation, Indian-American, modern sales pro turned SaaS leader. Miles is a 2009 grad of Herbert Business School at The University of Miami. About Cargologik Cargologik is a modern, web-based freight collaboration and communication platform that helps independent, small-to-medium-sized, freight forwarders and brokers collaborate, better stay in-sync, and improve operations together with an affordable, digital customer experience. It is a two-sided facing application that sits between the independent forwarder and their small shippers, akin to slack or teams for freight forwarders and their customers.  The platform provides automated tracking, document management, alerts to create and add structure to your business, and communication for you and your client. Cargologik is headquartered in Miami, Florida. Key Takeaways: Freight Forwarding Basics The process described below is the freight forward basics from the freight forwarder's perspective. 1.    Receive initial quote request. 2.    Gather and prep all the key information required to send a quote. 3.    Build and share a quote using the best available options. 4.    Present and obtain quote confirmation to win business and proceed with booking. 5.    Share booking details with clients 6.    Coordinating and communicating the movement of cargo and monitoring for exceptions 7.    Modify the delivery plan as necessary 8.    Confirm delivery, and collect payment Learn More: Miles Varghese Cargologik The Logistics of Logistics Podcast If you enjoy the podcast, please leave a positive review, subscribe, and share it with your friends and colleagues. Freight Forwarding Catches Up with Sharm Chelliah Sharm Chelliah and Joe Lynch discuss the topic, "freight forwarding catches up" which refers to the recent technology advancements made in freight forwarding that has enabled it to offer a customer experience and visibility on par with tech-enabled 3PLs and freight brokers. About Sharm Chelliah Sharm Chelliah is a Global Account Executive at Flexport, a digital freight forwarder, and customs broker. Sharm is laser-focused in achieving Flexport’s goal to make global trade easy and accessible to everyone with total visibility. With 15 years of experience in Healthcare, Retail, Supply Chain, Consumer Packaged Goods, Insurance, and Automotive industries and having delivered enterprise solutions to companies such as Coco-Cola and Home Depot, Sharm approaches each customer on their own merit, He maps out their unique supply chain requirements to deliver a customized platform that gives control to each client in an ever-changing operational environment. Sharm, having lived in several international cities, possesses in-depth knowledge of the diverse global environments and the vision to operate seamlessly in the global freight market space.   Sharm earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Information Systems and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Maryland. Sharm enjoys spending time with his wife, their dog, and cat. An avid golfer, Sharm’s way of unwinding is at a golf course. About Flexport Flexport is a freight forwarding and customs brokerage company based in San Francisco, California. Flexport is the first international freight forwarder and customs brokerage built around an online dashboard. Flexport was first to market with purpose-built cloud software and data analytics platform, Flexport today serves more than 10,000 clients in over 100 countries, offering a full range of services, including ocean, air, truck and rail freight, drayage & cartage, warehousing, customs & compliance, financing, and insurance – all powered by Flexport’s software platform. Flexport has offices in San Francisco (HQ), New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Copenhagen, Vancouver, and Dallas (and expanding rapidly). We have warehouses in Los Angeles, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Chicago. Flexport is #8 on Inc. 5000, a list of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. Key Takeaways: Freight Forwarding Catches Up Freight forwarding technologies and systems have lagged behind the tech-enabled 3PLs and freight brokers. One reason for the disparity in tech is the differences in the businesses. Freight forwarding is much more complex than domestic transportation. Each freight forwarding shipment involves many more companies, people, borders, languages, and cultures than the average domestic freight shipment. Because of the extra players, distances, timezones, and hassles, developing a system that would connect the far-flung operations was tougher. Today, freight forwarders like Flexport provide a system that enables their customers to enjoy the experience, automated functionality, visibility, connectivity, and speed of communication that is the hallmark of the best tech-enabled 3PLs serving domestic freight customers. The best freight forwarders are now able to deliver the following: Ability to manage by exceptions using filters. Predictive transit times with confidence levels. Easy to use, intuitive customer interfaces that improve communication and collaboration. Search functionality on a variety of attributes including part number, order number, invoice, customer name, etc.. Email functionality within the system so all communication is connected to the system of record. This functionality encourages faster, more useful collaboration around the shipment. In addition, as Chief Commercial Officer, Tom led Schenker AG’s global sales and marketing activities. Probably the most intimidating thing about sourcing products for private label sales from an overseas supplier is the issue of shipping. There are all kinds of issues that you have to be aware of including export licenses, taxes, when ownership of the products transfers to you (thus in indicating your liability), customs fees, and more. You can walk that path yourself or you can have someone help you. Scott definitely advises the later. Find out how it works on this great episode where Scott is chatting with Ryan Peterson, of Flexport. How Ryan started thinking about creating a freight forwarding company. It’s often the pain we experience ourselves that prompts us, entrepreneurs, to build something to solve that problem. That’s how it was for today’s guest, Ryan Peterson. Ryan had experienced some issues with his supplier and the sea shipping options that not only cost him a lot of money through fees and delays but also didn’t allow him to keep his products in stock as easily as he expected. He’d already worked in the overseas markets and figured he might be the guy to figure out some better systems to make things happen smoothly for others. Flexport is his solution. Find out more about Ryan and the Flexport story on this episode of The Amazing Seller. Product shipping issues can trip up your sales pipeline in a number of ways. One of the many problems Ryan Peterson ran into that caused him to build the Flexport solution for purchasers of overseas products was regarding timing. What he discovered was that everything had to legally be done in a certain sequence. If it wasn’t, and his product was shipped before a certain requirement was met, the shipping company would charge him daily fees for having his products “stored” at their facility. It’s just one example of the kinds of headaches it can be to ship by sea. But there are answers and Ryan has built the solution, which you can hear about on this episode of The Amazing Seller. When it comes to dealing with overseas shipping, make sure you understand the terms. There are all kinds of acronyms and terms used in the sea shipping and freight forwarding that can get you confused. And if you choose the wrong options, thinking they are the right option (which is not entirely unheard of) you can wind up paying lots of money in the form of customs fees and taxes that you really didn’t have to pay. So how do you navigate a field of landmines like that? You need someone to guide you - and on this episode of the podcast, Scott has just the guy - Ryan Peterson of Flexport. How are you going to deal with your freight issues for private label products? If you’re sourcing your products from overseas - China in particular - you are going to have to decide how you are going to handle your shipping issues. You can do it yourself. It’s possible, but you have to know what you’re doing. Or you can hire a company to be the go-between and the one to ensure all steps are being followed properly. To help you make that decision Scott’s brought on an expert from the freight forwarding industry to help you understand the pros and cons of each option - and hopefully to make a good decision for your situation.
