Today, the German capital is a busy, fun and coherent city. But I first knew Berlin when the Wall carved through its streets, dividing families. Some of those oppressed in East Berlin were allowed to leave – along with curious tourists like me.The main way out was at Friedrichstrasse station, where the Tränenpalast – or Palace of Tears – is now the most powerful reminder of division. This podcast is free, as is Independent Travel's weekly newsletter. Why being car-free is a distant future in Berlin

Across Europe, several cities are taking steps to remove cars from their city centers, but one capital is going in the other direction—Berlin's new government wants to protect drivers' rights. While many European cities, such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Paris are drastically reducing car traffic in their city centers in favor of cycle paths, Berlin is lagging behind, according to many critics. At Potsdamer Platz, cyclists are not impressed with the city's infrastructure. “There have been a lot of plans, but not much actual building. I think the discussion is happening, but much more needs to be done,” says Elena Witte. “It is difficult (to cycle). But it is better compared to ten years ago. I come from Freiburg, in South Germany, and there it's a biking paradise. In comparison to there, it is very hard here. But it is getting better,” says Eva Albers. But there are other opinions, of course, on the streets of Berlin. Motorists often criticize cycling infrastructure for eating up cars' public space. “Of course, each city needs bike paths. But you can't steal the space from the cars and give it straight to the cyclists,” says Sergei, a car driver. Some areas that had been dedicated as car-free, such as a section of the Friedrichstrasse street, have seen cars return. Other bike path projects were put on hold, or delayed, pending a review. But the Christian Democratic party, who made a proposal to change the mobility law in the city, says that they are simply correcting the previous government's unfair focus on bikes and negative view of other types of transport. “We think that the safety of all types of transport is important for all,” says Johannes Kraft, mobility spokesperson for the Christian Democrats in Berlin. “That includes pedestrians, which means mass transit like the underground and local rail and buses. But that also includes the car.” The German capital is not likely to become car-free anytime soon. If anything, it's becoming more car-friendly. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Sometimes I get fanciful and think the buildings speak. That all their history is locked into the walls and if you listened closely enough, you could hear all the people who'd once been there. Sigi lived upstairs from Sara at Friedrichstrasse 19, yet before they met, Sara had no idea that Berlin could be so thrillingly irreverent or that sex could be so intoxicatingly wonderful. But then came the war and hunger, loneliness and barbed wire. It was just as a young girl, a protegee of the Academy of Magical Arts situated in Friedrichstrasse at the start of the century, had predicted. Battered and divided, Berlin, like its people, endured. Hans yearns to be part of the boundary-breaking spirit of the age, but he's haunted by his mother's part in the war and the absence of a father. Ilse, who escaped from the East, wants nothing more than the freedom she risked her life for. In 1989 in a wild act of spontaneous joy, Heike leapt from the Wall into the arms of a stranger from the West. Thirty years later, she recognises that what she'd willed to be destiny was nothing more than naivety. Recently divorced, she moves into Friedrichstrasse, to begin a new life. But it's impossible not to hear the echoes of the secrets and lies, visions and misunderstandings, lost loves and fatal mistakes, that have come before her. Time-travelling between decades, through the interlocking lives of six people, Friedrichstrasse 19 relives the tumultuous experience of a city on the front line of history.

Pojazd został zatrzymany, rannego skatowano, a zmasakrowane ciało wrzucono do pobliskiej Rawy. Następnego dnia bojówkarze zdemolowali siedzibę polskiego komitetu plebiscytowego w Katowicach w hotelu „Deutsches Haus”, napadano na siedziby redakcji polskich gazet i sklepy, planowano atak na Polski Komisariat Plebiscytowy w Hotelu „Lomnitz”. Ett barn kvar på andra sidan. Murrester i en påse. Ett nedlagt kollektivjordbruk med konst. Kvaddade Trabanter. Gick upp i återföreningen. You are listening to the audio track of a video interview. Find the video here: https://www.startuprad.io/blog/my-fashionary-com-connects-online-and-offline-fashion/ In this interview, we talk to Beatrix v. Winterfeldt-Heuser, co-founder of My-Fashionary, management consultant and mother of two. My-Fashionary.com is a fashion platform where you can find independent designers, who design premium fashion you won’t find anywhere on the high street. Since the designers and the brands are not known yet they decided to combine online and offline fashion. For example, did they have a pop-up store in Berlin’s Friedrichstrasse at the beginning of 2018. My-Fashionary just did a pivot. Before they have been a platform for high-end fashion boutiques, which did not work. They even worked with external developers and had to throw everything into the bin at for a re-launch. Now you can buy high-end fashion form the designers directly via their platform, cutting out the middle (wo)men and enable unknown designers to build up a customer base. They now work with a unique way of social selling they developed. “People get bored by the always similar high street shopping experience. It is always the same whether you are in London, Singapore, Berlin or Frankfurt” “If you don’t know it will work, work with bootstrapped stuff, that already exists” You can learn more about their pop-up store in Düsseldorf here with this behind-the-scenes video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KByEAU73qg You can learn more about the company here: https://my-fashionary.com/ Or follow their Instagram account for inspirations: https://www.instagram.com/my_fashionary/ https://www.instagram.com/p/-kSCt1ipsU/ Or YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGhQPbP_W3cdhuYIYYwECJA Folge direkt herunterladen

Berlin Game -Len Deighton - Spybrary Book Club Edition   Spybrary listeners voted overwhelmingly for Berlin Game to be the first spy book to be discussed in our first ever book club Spybrary edition. Listen to an in-depth conversation on this spy classic with Spybrary host Shane Whaley, Deighton expert Rob Mallows and newcomer to Len Deighton's work but not the spy genre Peter Newman. WARNING - Please do not listen to the Berlin Game Book Club edition of Spybrary if you have not read the book. Unlike other episodes of the Spybrary Spy Podcast this episode if full of Berlin Game spoilers. It is a book club edition so we cover lots of aspects of the book including many of the twists and turns.   Spybrary Host Shane Whaley claims that this is one of the top 3 spy books ever written, if not the best! 'Not just a multi-layered spy novel but also a love letter from Len Deighton to Berlin' he says. Rob Mallows says Berlin Game is the book that got him hooked on Len Deighton. Peter Newman delivers a fresh approach as this was his first time reading Berlin Game. What did our panel think of the plot, the characters, the writing, the conclusion? Tune in to find out! 'Fleming made spy fiction globally popular, but it took Deighton in the Sixties with novels such as The IPCRESS File to make it hip. His finest work, though, came later, in the Eighties, with this trilogy (completed by Mexico Set and London Match) about the disillusioned SIS agent Bernard Samson. Less exuberant than his early books but more subtle, Berlin Game is a terrific feat of plotting that out-le-Carrés le Carré in its sardonic portrait of Secret Service office politics. Tarantino (who had Max Cherry read a copy in Jackie Brown) should hurry up and film it, like he said he would.' Jake Kerridge - The Telegraph.   Notable Quotes from Berlin Game by Len Deighton 'How long have we been sitting here?’ I said. I picked up the field glasses and studied the bored young American soldier in his glass-sided box. ‘Nearly a quarter of a century,’ said Werner Volkmann. His arms were resting on the steering wheel and his head was slumped on them. ‘That GI wasn’t even born when we first sat here waiting for the dogs to bark.’ Bernard Samson ----- 'Do you know some quiet restaurant where they have sausage and potatoes and good Berlin beer?’ ‘I know just the place, Bernie. Straight up Friedrichstrasse, under the railway bridge at the S-Bahn station and it’s on the left. On the bank of the Spree: Weinrestaurant Ganymed.’ ‘Very funny,’ I said. Between us and the Ganymed there was a wall, machine guns, barbed wire, and two battalions of gun-toting bureaucrats.'
