This week in the Labyrinth: Katy Perry's questionable choreography has Lizzie scratching her head, Tim dives into Tim Heidecker's absurdist takedown of Kill Tony with Kill Timmy, and we look back (and forward?) at the first 100 days of the new Commander-in-Chief. Lizzie had no idea what Match Game was—so of course we hit her with a crash course in Gene Rayburn, '70s weirdness, and the newly announced reboot hosted by Martin Short. From the News Desk:

The Gong Show was a spicy blend of talent, shock and zany, sprinkled heavily with the special sauce that was Producer/Host Chuck Barris. 70s TV was all about The Gong Gang and Game Show Guru Adam Nedeff's newest offering, Gong This Book chronicles the weirdly hypnotic cultural touchstone that was The Gong Show.Adam joins us with returning guest, author and Game Show Writer Shelley Herman. She appeared on The Gong Show and The Dating Game and her book is called My Peacock Tale: Secrets of an NBC Page. Together, we're celebrating game show history and delving deeply into The Gong Show, The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game. We take a look at Adam's all-time favorite hosts, Bill Cullen, Dennis James, Alan Ludden, Gene Rayburn, Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest. Adam shares The Gong Show's origin story which includes original hosts Gary Owens and John Barbour before the NBC head of daytime let Chuck Barris know that he was the only person who could host such a specifically strange show. He did and it worked, but it consumed him.Was Chuck Barris really a CIA spy???! We CAN tell you without having to kill you. Did The Gong show usher in the phenomenon that would become reality TV? Probably. What happened on those Dating Game dates!? Shelley is telling all. Fritz almost hosted two game shows but his tenacious weather job kept pulling him back in and Weezy's very first Hollywood show biz experience was her appearance on the game show, Face The Music!Adam and Shelley also discuss the fascinating intricacies of game show question writing and researching. And, they share the heartwarming story of Adam's book about Alan Ludden appearing dog eared and well loved in the very last photo taken of Betty White. Adam is now the proud owner of Betty's copy of his book. And in recommendations, Fritz has been loving Palm Royale on Apple Plus and Weezy went book to screen with We Were The Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter. The radio and TV personality is best known as host of various editions of the game show Match Game for over two decades.
Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back for another TV retrospective. Joining them is Digital Trends Editor Allison Lips as they talk about Match Game ‘73. Match Game ‘73 (retitled for every new year) is the first revival of the 1960s game show The Match Game. The show premiered on CBS in 1973. Though CBS canceled the show in 1979, a new syndicated version premiered later the same year and ran until 1982. On the show, contestants attempt to match a panel of celebrities' answers to humorous questions. Regular panelists include Richard Dawson, Charles Nelson Reilly, and most notably Betty White, who appeared on the old Match Game. Original host Gene Rayburn also returned. Match Game has seen more revivals since the 1970s, the last of which was hosted by Alec Baldwin and ended in 2021. Aaron, Josh, and Allison briefly look at the ‘60s version before going into ‘70s iteration and its unique humor. They also discuss game shows in today's TV landscape. For another podcast with Allison, you can listen to them chat about Bill Nye the Science Guy. Match Game ‘73 is streaming on Hulu. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popbreaktv/message

This brief episode of NBC Monitor was recorded from WCOP in Boston on March 16, 1968. The host is Gene Rayburn with a report from NBC Newsman Peter Hackes. A WCOP newscast presented by announcer Jim Dixon. I suspect the primary NBC station in Boston, WBZ, did not carry Monitor but did carry the hourly newscast from NBC. Thus WCOP aired Monitor and excerpted NBC commercials for a locally produced newscast.

1964 Gene Rayburn is host to a 68th birthday salute to comedian George Burns. Burns died at the age of 100. George Burns (born Nathan Birnbaum; January 20, 1896 – March 9, 1996) was an American comedian, actor, singer and writer, and one of the few entertainers whose career successfully spanned vaudeville, radio, film and television. His arched eyebrow and cigar-smoke punctuation became familiar trademarks for over three-quarters of a century. He and his wife Gracie Allen appeared on radio, television and film as the comedy duo Burns and Allen.

As we continue to introduce younger listeners to all the cool Pop Culture stuff of the past that they may have missed out on, TV Game Shows are certainly on that list! Game shows from the 60s to the 80s were wildly popular throughout those decades, and viewers of those shows have fond memories of them to this day. The Price is Right, Match Game, Family Feud, Hollywood Squares, Let's Make a Deal, and the $20,000 Dollar Pyramid are just a few shows that are considered classics today, and still popular in reruns online and on the Game Show channel. We have a special guest today who was host of several Game Shows including Card Sharks, Dream House, Rhyme and Reason, and Infatuation. Bob Eubanks hosted The Newlywed Game off and on for five decades, on both network and in syndication. The Newlywed Game became one of the top game shows in television history. But our guest is not just a game show host! He's had a long career that delves into many different facets of the entertainment business, and we're hoping to get to as much of his career as we can. So sit back and listen to a fun interview with a man who is truly a legend in Game Show history! Bob Eubanks can be found at http://www.bobeubanks.com, and the 60Up Balance Board at https://60up.com. The TV game show Match Game was canceled in 1963 for being too bland and not connecting with viewers. Figuring you couldn’t get canceled twice, the show’s writers put in cheeky questions designed to make the contestants blush at the celebrity panel’s witty banter and sexual innuendo. It won audiences back over and it stayed on the air until 1969.The game show then brought back as Match Game 73 and was nominated for several Emmys. Its risqué humor changed the tone of daytime TV game shows forever.Today camp culture historian A. Kevin and Kornflake have always secretly dreamed of being Match Game host Gene Rayburn. (Don't pretend you haven't too, you weirdo.) And so for our live version of The Flopcast at MarsCon last week, we decided to play "The Flop Game"! We don't have Charles Nelson Reilly, but we do have a celebrity panel of some of our favorite comedy musicians: the great Luke Ski, Tony Goldmark, Devo Spice, ShoEboX of Worm Quartet, TV's Kyle, Lindsay (aka Lindzilla), DJ Particle, and Rob Paravonian! We have prizes ranging in quality from "pretty good" to "incredibly stupid"! And of course, for players, we have the craziest people in Minnesota -- the MarsCon attendees. (Warning: Weird chanting and random singalongs break out frequently.) We assure you, a silly time was had by all... and you can take that to the BLANK.
