Jim at the Goodlettsville office sent Paul a summit for younger investors held by a company that pushes value-based investing. The truth is companies profit from young investors who want to make a difference. Paul cautions young investors trying to make a difference in the world with their money because companies will market products that seem to make a difference, but the money doesn't actually go to the cause; it goes to the fund company. Paul explains what happens to your money when you invest, why the returns are so low for these funds, and how you can use your money in ways that line up with your values. Later in the episode, Paul talks about a conversation he had with an investor who was leaving to invest somewhere else. (Part 2 of 2) David Akeman affectionately known as “Stringbean” was born on June 17, 1915 to a farm family in Annville, Kentucky. Anneville is a small town in Jackson County, Kentucky. Stringbean's love for music began at an early age. Before he was 8 years old, he built his first instrument out of a shoebox and thread. He most likely developed his early love for music from his father who was a successful banjo player who often played throughout the community. By the time Stringbean was 12, he bought his own banjo and then began playing at local dances and built a reputation as an excellent musician. While working construction type work building roads and planting trees, he continued playing his banjo with a goal of making it big in the music business. His career began when he entered a contest being judged by singer-guitarist-musical saw player Asa Martin. After impressing Martin, he soon joined Martin's band.During a performance, Martin had forgotten David Akeman's name. So he just introduced Akeman as “String Beans” The nickname was given to him based on his tall lanky frame. Apparently, the name stuck and David Akeman would become known simply as String Bean. Not only did Stringbean become known for his musical abilities, he also became known for being a funny guy. Stringbean became known as a comedian musician. He also broadcast on WLAP out of Lexington, Kentucky, and played with different groups during the late 1930s. Strange enough, old country music back in the 30s didn't include much banjo playing. However, Stringbean was able to keep banjo playing relevant in country music.Interesting enough, Stringbean was also a decent semi pro baseball player. His baseball playing skills became known to Bill Monroe, who had his own semi pro club. Monroe was so impressed with Stringbean that he added Stringbean to his band. He played in Monroe's band from 1943 until 1945.After Stringbean left Monroe in 1945, he was replaced by another popular banjo player named Earl Scruggs, who had a different sound than Stringbean. Stringbean would also go on marry his sweetheart Estelle Stanfill in 1945. The following year he would begin working with another banjo player named Louis Marshall Jones, affectionately known as Grandpa Jones. The two men would both be together doing comedy in the television program Hee Haw. Grandpa Jones was a WWII veteran and would become Stringbean's closest friend. The men also became neighbors in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.Akeman was one of the Opry's top stars throughout the 1950s. Oddly enough, he didn't begin recording on his own until the early '60s, when he signed to the Starday label. He had hits with "Chewing Gum" and "I Wonder Where Wanda Went," and recorded seven albums between 1961 and 1972.His first album was titled Old Time Pickin' and Grinnin' with Stringbean which was released in 1961. His music was considered folk stories with a taste of comedy. At the time, Stringbean and his buddy Grandpa Jones became the two biggest old time banjo players of their era.In 1969, a country style comedy would come to television. The program would be called Hee Haw and was on television from 1969 to 1993. The program lasted for 26 seasons and recorded 655 episodes. Any popular country musician who was anybody appeared on the show.Unfortunately, Stringbean and his wife Estelle would be tragically murdered on November 10, 1973. After the couple returned home from a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, they walked in on a robbery by two men. Stringbean was shot to death in front of his fireplace and his wife Estelle was shot to death outside their home while trying to flee the robbers. It would be Grandpa Jones who would find the bodies of his beloved friends the next day. Grandpa Jones had plans to pick Stringbean up the next day for a a planned hunting trip. Grandpa Jones would learn the sad truth when he pulled up to his friend's cabin at 2308 Baker Road near Ridgetop, Tennessee. According to author Taylor Hagood, Stringbean and Estelle didn't believe in using banks. Both were alive during the Great Depression when many people who had money in their banks lost it all.Stringbean was known to keep thousands of dollars in cash laying around his house. Grandpa warned him many times to not keep his money in the house. He told Stringbean that one day, keeping that cash around the house would get him killed. When Grandpa found the bodies of his murdered friends, he knew the day he worried about had finally come. The murders shocked Nashville residents. Author Taylor Hagood would write a book about Strinbean's life and death. For his book about Stringbean, Hagood interviewed one of the lead investigators in the case, surviving members of Stringbean's family and fellow musicians who knew Stringbean personally. He then compiled his findings into the book titled Stringbean: The Life and Murder of a Country Legend. If you enjoy reading. In this 2 part interview, I'm joined by Leslee Kiser (author of The Course of This World) to talk about all the ways the enemy tries to keep you from fully walking in what God has for you.  From distractions to our identity, the enemy comes at us from all angles as he tries to keep us focused on ourselves and turned away from God.  Leslee shares her own journey of wrapping her identity up in her performance, ability, looks and possessions and realizing none of that really defined her.  She talks about the power of knowing the Truth in Scripture and how the truth really can set you free from so much.  Some topics you'll hear about: What it really looks like to take your thoughts captive How to recognize the ploys of the enemy Keeping our thoughts focused on God  Embracing our identity in Christ Comparison steals our joy Confidence in Christ  and what that looks like Much more! As entrepreneurs, imposter syndrome and doubt are constantly coming up, so I know this conversation will resonate with so many of you.  I hope you're encouraged by this episode and that you continue shifting your mindset toward Jesus so you can do all that He is calling you to do.  More about Leslee I grew up in Goodlettsville, TN, in the same house for 21 years. I couldn't wait to get out, then I got out and couldn't wait to get back. I was raised in church but didn't grow spiritually like one would hope. Because I was just out of hell and into heaven, I made a lot of bad decisions based on what I wanted, how they made me feel, or what I got from them. This led me down the road to selfish ambition and insecurity. People who knew me at the time probably had no idea that the weight of comparison was crippling me. The way I coped at the time was to be more of all the things....have nicer clothes, better shoes, be louder, dance better, win more. I was very driven by what others thought. I remember praying that something had to change. I knew the road I was going down would lead to terrible things, possibly even death, but I didn't know how to get off it. After that prayer, little by little, God began to show me that His opinion mattered more than everybody else's. Once He started showing me who He was, and in turn showing me who I am in Him, my life turned upside down. The insecurity started melting away. I started to realize that all the things didn't sustain me, He did.   Watch Youtube video of this interview here: https://youtu.be/mZd52PA1wA8 Connect with Leslee   Email: lesleekiser@gmail.com Learn more about her book on Amazon (affiliate link): The Course of This World   ________________________________________________________________ Feeling stuck? To that end, Dollar General last month announced what it called an “evolution” in its media platform, DG Media Network (DGMN). The Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based discount store giant launched DGMN in 2018. “DG Media Network is here to deliver our brand partners an up-close and personal view of the Dollar General customer in a way that really no one else can,” Charlene Charles, head of DG Media Network operations, said in a podcast interview with Supermarket News. “We do this by creating more meaningful intersections between our partners and customers — essentially making it easier to reach the hard-to-reach and hard-to-measure [consumers] with the brands and products they want and need.” Dollar General said the DGMN upgrade includes a spate of new advertising partners from major CPG companies — Unilever, General Mills, Hershey’s and Colgate-Palmolive, to name a few — plus new strategic partners to expand DGMN’s technology, analytics and media capabilities. Dollar General certainly has a lot to offer CPG brands, with nearly 18,400 stores in 47 states. The chain noted that three-quarters of its stores serve markets of 20,000 people or fewer, a segment of customers often overlooked under current media strategies. The retailer’s mobile app also has 4 million monthly active users. “We very much pride ourselves in the fact that we can reach more than 90% of our active DG customers through paid media,” Charles said. “Building on that, we have speed in our reporting through a self-service dashboard showing near-time real attributable sales, and we’re focusing on striving to provide measurement to demonstrate performance for every dollar in and dollar out.”

In this week's episode we're featuring Melba Montgomery's complete Nugget Records sessions from the year 1962. Shortly after having spent almost four years touring with Roy Acuff's roadshow and marginally before being snapped up by United Artists, Melba was offered a chance to record for Lonzo & Oscar's newly-relocated Nugget Records in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. The result was ten sides which have largely been forgotten by country fans who focus instead on her duets with George Jones and UA solo material. Ten hard country nuggets (pun intended) all of which feature Shot Jackson on dobro and Buddy Emmons on steel. The two co-founders of the legendary Sho-Bud steel guitar company help push these Nugget recordings on a young, fresh and distinctive Melba Montgomery to the heights of honky tonk gold. Superb listening.

Across the Cumberland River basin, the Cumberland River Compact implements innovative stream restoration in vital ecosystems. The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2021–2030 as the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The Decade positions the restoration of ecosystems as a major nature-based solution towards meeting a wide range of global development goals and national priorities. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. The Cumberland River Compact addresses the root causes of water quality issues often through restoration. Our goals with restoration are to mimic nature, protect vital habitat, and replenish stream flows. Depending on the situation, we use a variety of techniques to do this from green infrastructure to dam removals to streambank stabilization. We complement our restoration work with community engagement across a watershed to address these issues on a broader level. Mansker Creek is a well-known and well-loved stream in Goodlettsville, TN, that meanders through neighborhoods and communities before entering the Cumberland River near Moss-Wright Park. Like many of our urban streams, Mansker Creek has several water quality impairments, including high levels of sediment and pathogens. As with many other watersheds, heavy urbanization and increased runoff in the area created conditions of severe bank erosion in parts of Mansker Creek, contributing to sedimentation in the creek among other problems. To address the problem, we worked with the City of Goodlettsville and KCI Technologies to repair the eroded bank in Moss Wright Park. In this podcast, Will Caplenor, Field Operations Supervisor with the Cumberland River Compacts, speaks to Adam Spiller and Zach Mryncza with KCI Technologies about this stream restoration project and how it addressed the root causes of water quality issues in Mansker Creek. We explore the process of restoration and how these projects can make our streams more resilient into the future. My dear friends, Happy 6th week of Easter, and, today is another Special Day, it's Mother's Day, a day of passing Love through your smile, send them your love, tell them of your love for them! My sisters and my brothers, for all our mothers, and, for all mothers everywhere, here with us on earth, or looking over us with their inner Spiritual smiles of Love from their heavenly home, a very happy and blessed Mother's Day to all! You know, I love and miss my mom so much, and sometimes the memory of the way she would smile at me her smile of love, fills me with such joy, and I thank the Lord for her smile still blessing my life! Today's podcast is about how Love, through just a smile, can be healing. Our podcast song is, ‘Pass That Smile', and that smile we pass, is Love. God is in that smile, God is Love! Love is also at work in just a smile. Our song, ‘Pass that Smile', is just a simple little song reminding us of God's Love in a simple little smile. It was written while living in Goodlettsville, TN. Only twenty minutes from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nashville, which was the church we were going to on Sunday mornings. It was in that church where the Holy Spirit kept nudging me with thoughts. The Reverend there gave a beautiful homily. Though I do not remember the words he spoke, I do remember the peacefulness of this church and the people therein. I stayed after the Mass Service, for I was aware of the promptings of the Holy Spirit. I usually keep my Spiritual Journal with me to be ready for times like these, and I must have stayed there until the inspirations within me were written down. Of course at that time, I wasn't aware that these thoughts would be composed into a song. I was only writing what came into my thoughts. Like the reaching out to people I was witnessing, or the smiles I noticed being passed, and in response the brightness on faces from that simple little smile. I started realizing that a simple little smile is a form of God's Love within us, and when we share that smile, we share part of God's Love. What a blessing, right?

The decision was made early on to go with all natural ingredients and to add flavors a few at a time. After some not so delightful forays into the larger retailer market, Eric decided to keep the focus on the Gourmet and Specialty market which fortunately, began a growth surge that continues to this day. In 2015, Willa's was awarded a Best of the South Award from Southern Living magazine that led to appearances on Unwrapped 2.0 and Tennessee Crossroads as well as articles in numerous nationally known magazines. Don’t compromise product quality and don’t cut your prices. Live within your means. It's okay to be frugal when you exhibit at expensive shows. Stay at a cheaper hotel, eat reasonable or even in your room. You are investing in your future business. Watch the crowd and observe the trend as you analyze the shows you attend. Are the attendees your proven customer base? Things are changing! If you’re not seeing the younger buyers, you have a dying market. It's time to switch things up. If you’re a new maker with new products, trade shows may still be good for you. Take a look at your vendors in a different way.
