Entrepreneur and Drunken Elephant Founder & Creative Director Tiffany Masterson discusses the Origin and Inspiration for her Cosmetics Company with Janet Gurwitch, the Founder of Laura Mercier Cosmetics and Operating Partner, Advent International
Mississippi native Janet Gurwitch was destined to join the fashion industry. Her father owned a chain of shoe stores and she herself graduated college with a degree in retail. After spending 14 years with Houston department store Foley's, Gurwitch went on to become the Executive Vice President for Neiman Marcus. While there, she met make-up artist Bobbi Brown, then just beginning to launch her make-up line. Although she never intended to become an entrepreneur, Gurwitch was inspired by Brown to start her own business. At the age of 42, Gurwitch left Neiman Marcus and sought a makeup artist with whom she could build a beauty brand. After networking with beauty editors at Vogue and other magazines, she made her choice, invested her life's savings, and created Laura Mercier. But after 13 years, when Nemain Marcus was sold to a private equity company, their 51% investment in Laura Mercier went with it. Gurwitch was forced to sell and she once again faced a career reinvention. Listen in to her conversation with CoveyClub founder, Lesley Jane Seymour, to learn how Gurwitch joined the private sector and bought five beauty brands in the course of ten years. FREE GIFT! Don't start your reinvention without downloading CoveyClub's starter guide called “31 Badass Tips for Launching Your Reinvention Without Fear!” Bio: Janet Gurwitch is an operating partner with Advent International, where she serves on the board of Olaplex, Inc. Gurwitch is the founder and former CEO of Laura Mercier Cosmetics & Skincare, a global brand of high-end niche cosmetics. Prior to founding Laura Mercier, Janet Gurwitch was the Executive Vice President of Neiman Marcus, where she developed strategy and managed 80% of Neiman Marcus' $2 billion sales volume across 35 doors. For many generations, Americans were sold the idea of upward mobility. But today’s generations are unfortunately and unexpectedly struggling with downward mobility, both financial and emotional. A new essay collection gives irreverent and empathetic voice to this generation, hurtling into their next chapter with no safety net, and author Annabelle Gurwitch joined us to discuss this unique book. In conversation with writer Susan Orlean, Gurwitch shared passages from You’re Leaving When?: Adventures in Downward Mobility, and about her inspiration for writing it. She explored her own experience with embracing homesharing, welcoming a housing-insecure young couple and a bunny rabbit into her home, as well as relearning to parent one pronoun at a time when her college student child sheds the gender binary. With humor, she related diving into the dating pool and flunking the magic of tidying up. In a time when so many believed they had a semblance of security but wound up with a fragile economy, Gurwitch offered stories of resilience, adaptability, low-rent redemption, and the kindness of strangers. She invited us to timely and eminently relatable conversation. Annabelle Gurwitch is the author of I See You Made an Effort; Wherever You Go, There They Are; You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up (coauthored with Jeff Kahn); and Fired! (also a Showtime Comedy Special). Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.08.27.271056v1?rss=1 Authors: Dick, A. S., Silva, K., Gonzalez, R., Sutherland, M. T., Laird, A. R., Thompson, W. K., Tapert, S. F., Squeglia, L. M., Gray, K. M., Nixon, S. J., Cottler, L. B., La Greca, A. M., Gurwitch, R. H., Comer, J. S. Abstract: As natural disasters increase in frequency and severity (1,2), mounting evidence reveals that their human toll extends beyond death, injury, and loss. Posttraumatic stress (PTS) can be common among exposed individuals, and children are particularly vulnerable (3,4). Curiously, PTS can even be found among youth far removed from harm's way, and media-based exposure may partially account for this phenomenon (5-8). Unfortunately, susceptibility to media effects has been difficult to characterize because most research is initiated post-event, precluding examination of pre-disaster factors. In this study, we mitigate this issue with data from nearly 400 9- to 11-year-old children collected prior to and after Hurricane Irma. We evaluate whether preexisting neural patterns predict degree of media effects on later Irma-related PTS. We show that "dose" of Irma-related media exposure predicted Irma-related PTS, even among children dwelling thousands of kilometers away from the hurricane. Furthermore, we show, using pre-hurricane functional magnetic resonance imaging data, that neural responses in brain regions associated with anxiety and stress confer particular vulnerability to media effects and PTS among certain children. Specifically, right amygdala predicted Irma-related PTS, and bilateral orbitofrontal cortex and right parahippocampal gyrus moderated the association between Irma-related media exposure and PTS. Collectively, these findings run counter to outdated "bullseye" models of disaster exposure that assume negative effects are narrowly circumscribed around a disaster's geographic epicenter (9). In contrast, for some youth with measurable preexisting vulnerability, consumption of extensive disaster-related media appears to offer an alternative pathway to disaster exposure that transcends geography and objective risk. This preventable exposure should be considered in disaster-related mental health efforts. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

This episode is SO MUCH FUN! Pete Holmes and Annabelle Gurwitch grace Go Fact Yourself with their wit, joy and, yes, abject frustration. And we learn fun facts about the performers. For example, Pete Holmes reveals that The New Yorker rejected his avocado cartoon, and calls into question the magazine’s editorial judgment. J. Keith reminds Annabelle Gurwitch that they both appeared in a pilot together that was so unmemorable...he had to tell her what it was. J. Keith Van Straaten and Helen Hong sink to new lows with questions like, “What’s the difference between a treaty and an accord?”, and “What’s the difference between arbitration and mediation?” It’s madness! In the end, we’ll find out which of our guests can be crowned the winner. Pete Holmes’ areas of expertise are Vegan Nutrition, Judd Apatow Movies, and Mad Men. Annabelle Gurwitch claims to know about Joni Mitchell's Blue, Commercials from the 1970s, and Secessionist Painters in Vienna. You know, painters like Gustav Klimt and Rudolf von Alt. Spoiler alert: Gurwitch does not get a chance to demonstrate her expertise of that subject. Appearing in this episode: J. Wherever You Go, There They Are (Blue Rider Press) There’s an old adage: You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family. But is that true in the world we live in now? New York Times bestselling author Annabelle Gurwitch, asks this question in her latest collection of essays, Wherever You Go, There They Are, where she writes about her own family of bootleggers, gamblers, and philanderers, as well as the sisterhoods, temporary tribes, communities, and cults who have become surrogates along the way. “When I stepped into the role of care giving for my aging parents, it was the last thing I ever expected,” explains Gurwitch. “These stories are about the family I tried to run away from and the ones I’ve joined accidentally and on purpose. Writing about family gave me a chance to look at: Who is our tribe? Is it our blood relations? Our friends? Our pets? The people we work with or pray with? What I’ve learned is that no matter how hard you try to get away from your crazy family, you end up in another family just as crazy as the one you tried to leave.” Gurwitch explores family mythology, her immigrant southern Jewish clan and an inheritance on an ill-fated sliver of sand disappearing due to climate change known as Massacre Island; theater folk, secular humanists, Furries, a UFO cult, how corporations use sisterhood as a recruiting tool, the ladies who brunch at Tel Aviv Gardens Retirement Home in Miami, Florida, and finds common ground with her Syrian Uber driver’s kin. A timely paean to tribes over tribalism, Wherever You Go, There They Are is inspired by historian Yuval Harari’s Sapiens, Sebastian Junger’s Tribe, Star Trek and her secret desire to be the long lost daughter of Joni Mitchell. Annabelle Gurwitch delivers a provocative treatise on the importance and insanity of family. This is a must-read for anyone who's ever been even occasionally frustrated by the people they share carbohydrate-laden meals with every year. Praise for Wherever You Go, There They Are Annabelle Gurwitch claims to be related to her nutty family, but I suspect she’s really the secret love child of Nora Ephron and Groucho Marx. She’s an old-fashioned wit for the post-modern age, a curmudgeon with a deep well of empathy and a genuinely good soul. I’m so glad she’s back with another book."— Meghan Daum, New York Times Bestselling author of The Unspeakable “Annabelle Gurwitch tackles every life passage, with a courageous wit that makes even the darkest moments more bearable. Wherever You Go, There They Are hilariously explores the frustrations, catastrophes, and unforgettable thrills of navigating life with that gaggle of lunatics known as family.”— Heather Havrilesky, Ask Polly advice columnist and author of How to Be a Person in the World Annabelle Gurwitch is an actress and author of The New York Times bestseller and Thurber Prize finalist I See You Made an Effort. Gurwitch gained a loyal following during her years co-hosting Dinner & a Movie on TBS. Her essays and satire have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harpers Bazaar, and The Los Angeles Times as well as numerous years as a commentator on NPR. Gurwitch hosted programs on HBO, and The Planet Green Network, acting credits include Seinfeld, Boston Legal, Dexter, Daddy Day Care and Melvin Goes to Dinner. She is a prominent figure in the atheist and Jewish communities. Gurwitch’s live appearances include The New York Comedy Festival, The Moth, 92nd St Y and arts centers around the country. On this episode of “Hot Off the Press” Chef Pete welcomes home bestselling author, actress and comedian Annabelle Gurwitch. A native of Mobile, Ala., Gurwitch is best known for her time as hostess of the TBS original series “Dinner and a Movie,” a role she says she reluctantly took but that quickly gained her a loyal comedic following. Gurwitch has an impressive background in TV and as a writer. She’s written for countless magazines, and has appeared on a variety of talk shows, including Real Time with Bill Maher, The Anderson Cooper Show, Red Eye, and CNN's Show Biz Tonite. Her acting credits include Seinfeld, Boston Legal, Dexter, Daddy Day Care and Melvin Goes to Dinner. Gurwitch is also a prominent figure in the atheist and Jewish communities, active in the sustainability movement, and a comedic commentator on politics and culture. Her latest book, “Wherever You Go, There They Are,” is a hysterically funny and slyly insightful new collection of essays about her own family of bootleggers, scam artists, and hucksters, as well as the misbegotten cults, spiritual communities, and show-biz klatches who have become surrogates along the way. As Gurwitch likes to put it, ““No matter how hard you try to escape your crazy family, you just end up in another crazy family.” With her wry wit and hard-learned wisdom, Gurwitch explores the inescapable, yet rewarding, realities of life with her family—the one she was born with and the ones she found along the way, including show business, a Greenwich Village cult, a tribe of vegan Cosplaying plushies, the "Arbonne sisterhood," The P.T.A. of the Walter Reed Middle School, and most recently, the ladies who brunch at The Jewish Home for The Aged in Miami, Florida. She's learned that for better or for worse (you can guess which) it's worth celebrating the traditions, rituals, and recipes that come with a shared mythology and legacy, even if her own inheritance amounts to a small plot of land split between five relatives on an ill-fated sliver of sand known as Massacre Island (or as those of us on the Gulf Coast call it, Dauphin Island). Hilariously written and filled with surreal, yet poignant, family moments, Gurwitch delivers a provocative treatise on the importance and insanity of family. Connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.
ANNABELLE GURWITCH The actress and bestselling author shares a hilarious new collection of essays about family in Wherever You Go, There They Are When Annabelle Gurwitch (best recognized as the co-host of TBS’s Dinner & a Movie, among many other roles) was a child, surrounded by a cast of epically dysfunctional relatives, she secretly prayed that it was all a terrible mistake. A family of bootleggers, gamblers, and philanderers, the Gurwitches have always been a bit vague on the standard ideal of a loving and supportive family. Their definition includes people you can count on to borrow money from, hold a grudge against, or blackmail. One day, unfortunately, Gurwitch woke up to realize that she'd made pretty much the same mistakes as everyone else before her--just in a new zip code. Wherever she went, there they were. Annabelle Gurwitch discusses (in her hilarious way): · her southern Jewish roots · her flirtation with surrogate families, including theater folk, pet people, a UFO cult, the sisterhood, and the ladies who brunch at Tel Aviv Gardens Retirement Home in Miami, FL · that, for better or worse, it's worth celebrating the traditions, rituals, and recipes that come with a shared mythology and legacy (even if her own inheritance amounts to a small plot of land split between five relatives on an ill-fated sliver of sand known as Massacre Island.) · the spectacularly daunting search for the community where her aging parents will spend the last chapter of their lives. Both hysterically funny and moving, Gurwitch shares the importance and insanity of family for anyone who's even occasionally been frustrated by the people they share carbohydrate-laden meals with every year. About the Author Annabelle Gurwitch is an actress and the author I See You Made an Effort (a New York Times bestseller and Thurber Prize finalist); You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up (coauthored with Jeff Kahn), and Fired! also a Showtime Comedy Special. Gurwitch gained a loyal following during her stint cohosting Dinner & a Movie on TBS and years as a regular commentator on NPR. She’s written for the New Yorker, the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Hollywood Reporter. Gurwitch was the new anchor on HBO's Not Necessarily the News and hosted WA$TED on Planet Green network. Her acting credits include: Seinfeld, Boston Legal, Dexter, Melvin Goes to Dinner. A veteran of many lauded and even more misguided theatrical productions, she regularly performs at arts centers around the country. Annabelle is a Jewish mother, a reluctant atheist, and an ardent environmentalist. She is empty-nesting in Los Angeles. www.annabellegurwitch.com

I See You Made An Effort: Compliments, Indignities and Survival Stories from the Edge of 50 (Blue Rider Press) Is 50 the new 40 or is 50 still 50? Maybe. In this wickedly funny new collection of essays, I See You Made An Effort, actress and writer Annabelle Gurwitch explores the hazards of turning 50, outsourcing your endocrine system, and falling in lust at the Genius bar. From the woman the Washington Post calls “hilarious,” this new book is the ultimate coming-of middle-age story and a must-read for women everywhere. The panic began to set in when Annabelle turned 49. The solicitations from the AARP began flooding her mailbox as she weighed going back to school, getting divorced and raising llamas. She couldn't afford a vacation, so she was taking a lot of naps. A visit to her gynecologist ended not with one of his usual benign send-offs—stay healthy, stay happy, stay hydrated—but instead with the slightly ominous: "Stay funny." In this new collection of essays, Annabelle Gurwitch has taken her gynecologist's advice to heart. Whether she's navigating the extensive anti-aging offerings in the department store beauty counter or negotiating the ins and outs of acceptable behavior with her teenage son, Gurwitch bravely turns an unflinching eye towards the myriad of issues women can expect to encounter in their middle years. For tonight's reading Annabelle Gurwitch will be joined by members of the Suite 8 Writer's Collective, Jillian Lauren, Heather Havrilesky and Joshua Wolf Shenk.
