This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum cut through the media fog around Brett Favre's testimony to Congress. No, he was not summoned to Congress to testify about his Parkinson's diagnosis, as the headlines might have you believe (we wish him the best). In fact, he was there to explain his alleged misuse of welfare funds. While Mississippi failed to provide TANF benefits (AKA welfare) to its poorest residents, Favre managed to receive funding for speeches, volleyball stadium, and a startup from the same pool of funding. While he has yet to be punished, the woman who broke the story is facing JAIL TIME! In even more somber news, the hosts reflect on the state-sponsored lynching of inmate Marcellus Williams. In the lead up to his execution, the victim's family members, the non-profit group The Innocence Project, and even local prosecutors pleaded for a stay of execution, but the state of Missouri killed him anyway. This is America y'all, our hearts go out to the families. Check out The Innocence Project at innocenceproject.org and help them in their mission to prevent wrongful convictions. And we close the show with a heated discussion sparked by Whoopi Goldberg's defense of Janet Jackson, after she made false comments about Kamala Harris's ethnicity. Should celebrities be commenting on current events, and how do they do so responsibly? Our hosts offer differing opinions. And of course we'll hear from you, our #NLPFam listeners. And Alicia, Michael, and Symone look ahead to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle's Congressional testimony on Monday with national security analyst Clint Watts
Tonight on The Last Word: Donald Trump visits Capitol Hill for the first time since January 6. Also, the Supreme Court immunity ruling delay helps Trump. Plus, the House votes to hold Attorney General Garland in contempt. And Trump reportedly calls Milwaukee “a horrible city” ahead of the Republican convention there. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Andrew Weissmann, Rep. Eric Swalwell, and Rep. Gwen Moore join Lawrence O'Donnell.
Tonight on The Last Word: Florida's six-week abortion ban is now in effect. Also, Wisconsin becomes a key battleground state in 2024. Plus, Donald Trump lies about the criminal justice system while saying he'd consider pardons for January 6 rioters. And Vice President Harris visits Atlanta to court Black voters. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, Florida State Rep. Fentrice Driskell, Mayor Donna Deegan, Rep. Gwen Moore, Ben Wikler, Neal Katyal, and Davante Jennings join Jonathan Capehart.
What's Trending: Police in Washington are raising their concerns about a ban that has been proposed to no longer allow officers to hog-tie individuals who are non-compliant and need to physically be restrained. MSNBC somehow ignored the statement by a legal analyst that claims that the Hur Special Council were not the ones who brought up the topic of Beau Biden's death. UFC's Dana White leaves Howie Mandel and other hosts stunned when he walked of his podcast. // LongForm: Dr. Renata Moon (formerly of WSU) is still dealing with bad faith attacks for questioning the Covid vaccine and kids. // The Quick Hit: California Congressman Mike Garcia believes we are facing the most important National Security issue that we as a country have faced. Rep. Gwen Moore is against Israeli carpet bombing and the ground offensive in Rafah
The national media is touting a Child Care Tax Credit that passed the House of Representatives Wednesday, but long time child poverty advocate Gwen Moore and Mark Pocan voted no. Why were the champions of President Biden's Child Tax Credit against this bill? What does the bill have to do with more big tax breaks for self-dealing corporations? Next we dissect the details of the latest state Legislative GOP tax cut for the wealthy, where taxpayers with incomes under $100,000 (59.6% of all fillers) would receive only 26.4% of the cut and taxpayers with incomes of $100,000 or more (40.4% of filers) would receive 73.6% of the cut! Gov. Evers rightly vetoes the latest GOP Legislative maps, as Republicans press Janet Protasiewicz to recuse herself from the challenge to the state's Congressional maps. Robert tells us more about a Calumet Co. Judge ruling that factory farms may not avoid DNR permits and the GOP pushing constitutional amendment to ban preferences for historically marginalized groups. We look at Wisconsin Republican efforts to support TX Governor Greg Abbott's nullification of federal immigration law. Finally we discuss some real solutions to the sudden and dangerous closure of major hospitals and clinics in Chippewa Valley.
As what is being dubbed a genocide going on in Gaza, with now over 25,000 killed the majority of whom are women and children, and with over 62,000 injured. The US anti-war movement is struggling to impact the US Congress and President Biden to actively call for and work for a ceasefire, as well as to stop funding Israel's military operation. The US historically provides over $3 billion in aid each year to Israel, the largest to any other country. Additionally, the Biden administration bypassed Congress through an emergency provision in the Arms Export Control Act to sell Israel $106 million worth of tank ammunition. Biden's unilateral support for Israeli policies in Gaza has earned him the moniker “Genocide Joe”. Our guest is Kevin Martin, President of Peace Action and Peace Action Education Fund. And there is news on the Child Tax Credit. After millions of families were disappointed when Congress allowed the popular expanded CTC to expire after one year, there is new hope for a bi-partisan deal to bring back some elements of the expanded CTC. But who will be left out of the credit? The Expanded CTC lifted at least 4 million children out of poverty and cut child hunger by ¼. In contrast the new bipartisan proposal under pressure from the GOP would roll back some of the earlier gains of the Expanded CTC. The new proposal would lift 400,000 children out of poverty leaving behind millions of the most impoverished. Congresswoman DeLauro who has championed the CTC for over two decades said that the bi-partisan CTC proposal “will keep millions of children in preventable poverty.” Most NGO advocates on Capitol Hill including the Children's Defense Fund, Economic Security Project and others are supporting the bi-partisan compromise though they admit it doesn't go far enough out of fear of no action in this Congress on the CTC and with the hope that it can be improved on in 2025. We will hear remarks by Congresswoman Gwen Moore a champion in Congress against poverty, as she spoke during the House Ways and Means Committee Hearing this past Friday on the proposed compromise. And our guest is Phoebe Jones Schellenberg who has been actively supporting bringing back the expanded CTC. Phoebe is with Care Income Now and is a co-coordinator of the Global Women's Strike in the US.

Tonight on The Last Word: Mark Meadows loses his bid to move the Georgia case to federal court. Also, a lawsuit seeks to bar Donald Trump from Colorado's 2024 ballot, citing the 14th Amendment. We have a special interview with U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan to discuss his fight against the Big Health Insurance take over Medicare. These profit hungry corporate behemoths are running multi-million dollar campaign falsely promoting Medicare Advantage programs as Medicare, duping seniors into inferior coverage and bilking the federal government. In reality, these programs are rife with abuse, and threaten the long term existence of Medicare. We review the historic bailout of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and the role of incomplete financial reform following the Great Recession, dangerous bank deregulation in the Trump years supported by Republicans and conservative Democrats. Should wealthy Tech Industry players who claim to be Libertarians get a bailout from the government? We review Tuesday's bankruptcy of Diamond Sports/Bally Sports Network and its potential impact on the Milwaukee Brewers' financial stability. We make the obvious connection to the sudden demand of the Brewer's owner for a massive state tax giveaway. China hysteria continues in the U.S. with a move to force the sale of Tik Tok to a U.S. company. But is Tik Tok data really less secure than the other big tech monopolies? Also, we reveal conservative Wisconsin Congress members Glenn Grothman and Derrick Van Orden's shameful and hypocritical effort to force people in need of food assistance to regularly report to the government that they are working in order to receive food. Congresswoman Gwen Moore fights back on behalf of needy families.
In this week's Capitol Chats podcast, U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Milwaukee, says lawmakers need to keep in mind ways to dismantle Milwaukee's historic segregation issues while crafting legislation. The Ways and Means Committee member also says she hopes the fight to raise the debt ceiling won't again result in a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating as happened in the 2011 fight to raise the debt ceiling.

Congresswoman Gwen Moore of Wisconsin shares the truth in the history about housing discrimination and how we can do better for Black and brown Americans in 2022.
We open the show with immediate reactions to the full scale invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin, and the odd split on the conflict in the Trump-era GOP. Is the backing of Putin by Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump himself, and others the new normal in Republican foreign policy? We welcome new WEAC president Peggy Wirtz-Olsen for her first interview on Battleground Wisconsin to dig into what is behind the record number of teachers who want to leave their profession. Is conservative scapegoating of schools and educators making the professional unlivable? Turning to the State Legislature, we evaluate a series of historically bad bills that gut public education, expand a separate private education system, and break up Milwaukee Public Schools without any consultation from the parents and school board members of Milwaukee. Claire updates us on Senate Republican attacks on BadgerCare by GOP legislators. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, and community and labor leaders continued a push for Build Back Better and the jobs it will create this week with a media event. Finally we close by encouraging our listeners to attend a Solidarity Rally @ Noon Saturday in support of UAW Oshkosh Co. workers' effort to land the USPS truck contract, and introduce Sulma Arieas, the new Executive Director of People's Action.

How can we move beyond the dominant narrative, to hear stories that have been erased? Artist Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn and curator and public historian Gwen Moore find similarities in growing up in communities that were violently transformed or completely erased. Building on earlier discussions of trauma in this program, the two talk about how their practices of storytelling and public memory are a response to damage leveled on Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Mill Creek Valley in St. Louis. Their mutual interests point to listening to the voices of ancestors, the testimonial power of objects, and our collective responsibility to understand history.Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn's artistic practice explores strategies of political resistance enacted through counter-memory and post-memory. Extracting and re-working narratives via history and supernaturalisms is an essential part of Nguyen's video works and sculptures where fact and fiction are both held accountable. Gwen Moore is the Curator of Urban Landscape and Community Identity at the Missouri Historical Society focusing on race, ethnicity, race relations, and social justice issues in St. Louis. An important part of her work has been documenting the Ferguson protest movement, which includes a collection of physical materials along with an oral history project. Gwen was also the curator for the Missouri History Museum exhibition, #1 in Civil Rights: The African American Freedom Struggle in St. Louis. -As a major component of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis's exhibition Stories of Resistance, Radio Resistance assembles the voices of intersecting local and global agents of change. Artists featured in the exhibition are paired with figures from the past, present, and future of St. Louis, coming together to transmit messages of dissent. Eleven episodes will be released over the course of the exhibition, amplifying shared struggles, collective dreams, and models of individual and group action. Using a historically rebellious medium, Radio Resistance broadcasts social narratives of defiance and hope.Selections of Radio Resistance will be broadcast on St. Louis on the Air, the noontime talk program hosted by Sarah Fenske on St. Louis Public Radio. Full episodes will be released biweekly in a listening station at CAM, and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Stitcher. A publication celebrating Stories of Resistance, featuring episode highlights, will be released later this year.

House Democrats have launched an impeachment inquiry into Republican President Donald Trump — after a whistleblower claimed that Trump asked the new Ukrainian leader to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son. Two of Wisconsin's Democratic members of Congress, Gwen Moore and Mark Pocan, fully support impeachment. But a third member, Ron Kind of La Crosse, stopped short of saying Trump should be impeached.
In a very serious bit of news befitting a very serious Congresswoman, Dan tracked down the exclusive audio of Gwen Moore calling for President Trump to be removed from office.
