Hello and welcome to the Monday Breakfasts show, on today's show:Interview with Nadia Gavin from Harm Reduction Victoria about keeping safe while using drugs, stigma, upcoming workshops and more  In response to the recent 9 news report — first on 60 minutes, then The Age and other Fairfax outlets, spearheaded by Nick McKenzie — Monday Breakfast spoke to members of Defend The Unions, Defend The CFMEU. Last August, the CFMEU faced baseless allegations by Fairfax Media, leading to the reactionary measure by Albanese's Federal ALP government: to put the — not only the Victorian branch — but all CFMEU branches along the eastern coast of the continent into a government-approved administration. Hundreds of democratically-elected CFMEU were subsequently sacked on the spot with no right to reply. Esther Van Arend, an outspoken critic of the administration and staunch advocate for workers' rights in the union, was sacked under questionable circumstances after speaking to journalist Nick McKenzie outside a coburg cinema late last year. Esther was fired by the administration with no legal recourse, in any other circumstances this would be considered unfair dismissal and she has not yet had a right of reply. Rob spoke with Dusty, Amelia, Julie, and Janine, four rank and file members of the CFMEU and members of Defend the Unions Defend the CFMEU, a community group of rank and file CFMEU members, including a small handful of delegates plus community members in support of the union.  Speech by Amy Ciara from Kill Your Lawn Kick Ya Fence, at the IWWD in Geelong covering transgender and environmental issues as they relate to unions.  Music:Acolyte by Slaughter Beach, Dog Community events:On Wednesday the 26th of March there will be a picket of the Avalon airshow to stop death-dealing arms trading. The picket will trake place on Beach Road between Princess Highway and airshow Gate 1. Attendees are encouraged to wear black bloc to protect yourself and your community, comrades are also encouraged to carpool. See more info here.

Marked annually on August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day 2021 is the world's largest annual campaign to end overdose. As the event's website explains, the day is an opportunity to ‘remember without stigma those who have died and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.' International Overdose Awareness Day 2021 is a time to remember and, importantly, a time to act. To mark the occasion, the DruGS team hosted an online discussion focussed on recent legislative changes in Victoria aimed at supporting the health and wellbeing of people who consume drugs. While a range of issues were covered some key topics include the: • Recent changes to regulation of the overdose reversal drug naloxone; • Recent decriminalisation of peer distribution of new injecting equipment and; • Limits of the recent changes and other ambitious reform goals for the sector. The discussants were Mr Sione Crawford, Executive Officer of Harm Reduction Victoria, Ms Jane Dicka, Health Promotion Team Coordinator, Harm Reduction Victoria and DruGS team member Associate Professor Kate Seear, Lead of the Gender, Law and Drugs (GLaD) program at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University. The discussion was facilitated by DruGS team members Dr Renae Fomiatti and Dr Adrian Farrugia, Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pharmacotherapy is a treatment for opioid dependence that plays a vital role in many Victorians' lives.  In response to COVID-19, a number of changes were made to the way it is delivered. Please also check out part 2 for an interview with Sarah Lord, who works at Pharmacotherapy Advocacy, Mediation & Support, a service of Harm Reduction Victoria. The world is changing fast due to COVID-19. As part of APSU's broader effort to understand the impact on people who use alcohol and other drug (AOD) services, Straight From the Source is inviting a range of consumers and peer workers to share their experiences. Our first guest in this series is Jane from Harm Reduction Victoria. Harm reduction services find themselves at the sharp end of many of the lockdown restrictions, with the advice they deliver and the way it is done having to be drastically adapted.  Jane gives a fascinating insight into to the many challenges faced by harm reduction services and the drug-using community, and a few reasons to feel hopeful.   Straight From the Source presents the real-life stories of people affected by alcohol and other drugs, as well as relevant perspectives from experts and professionals.  The show is brought to you by the Association of Participating Service Users (APSU), which is a service of the Self Help Addiction Resource Centre (SHARC). APSU is a Victorian consumer body that believes the voices of people with lived experience of AOD issues should be heard and incorporated into service design and delivery.  The views expressed in this podcast are not necessarily the views of APSU or SHARC. Names and identifying details may have been changed for privacy reasons. Music is by dbh. There’s plenty more of it here. And there’ll be more from us. Thanks so much for listening.

Harm reduction is a broad approach to drug policies, programmes and practices that aim to reduce the harms associated with the use of psychoactive drugs in people unable or unwilling to stop. The defining features are the focus on the prevention of harm, rather than on the prevention of drug use itself, and the focus on people who continue to use drugs.Peer workers are vital to harm reduction. They bring the wisdom, knowledge and connections needed to prevent and reduce harm in our community.GUESTSPeter Wearne, Chair of Yarra Drug and Health ForumAssoc. Our minds immediately go to illegal drugs when discussing overdose, however alcohol and prescription medication are two of our biggest killers. In honour of loved ones lost and dearly missed, our aim is to raise awareness and reduce stigma within our communities around this significant health issue.Read the Vancouver safe supply statement

Over the 2019 summer, music festivals - particularly those in NSW - have been put in the spotlight with a number of young people overdosing on substances. This prompted health and other professionals to renew their calls for pill testing. These calls were rejected by the New South Wales Government who instead decided to crackdown on festivals by introducing a raft of proposed changes to the industry. In this show, we speak with Steph Tzanetis, the Coordinator of Harm Reduction Victoria’s DanceWize program, a nightlife and music festival harm reduction service offering peer education and support. We also speak with Fiona Measham Professor of Criminology at Durham University since 2012, with over two decades of research and work across a broad areas including criminology and social policy.

The two elements seem to be intertwined, inseparable; that mythical phrase “sex, drugs and rock and roll” has been bandied about with a wink and a grin for decades. But is it all smoke and mirrors, or does that cliché ring true for some of our best-known performers? In this fascinating book, journalist Andrew McMillen talks with Australian musicians about their thoughts on – and experiences with – illicit, prescription and legal drugs. Through a series of in-depth and intimate interviews, he tells the stories of those who have bitten into the forbidden fruit and avoided choking. Finally on the show, we discuss a range of topics around reforming drug policy in Australia.
