India's stock markets are booming. One calculation from Bloomberg puts India as the world's fourth-largest equity market, overtaking Hong Kong, as domestic and foreign investors pile into the Indian stock exchange. But getting to the point where India's stock markets—and its financial system more broadly—could work effectively took a long time. As Rajrishi Singhal tells it in Slip, Stitch and Stumble: The Untold Story of Financial Reforms in India (Viking, 2024), India's financial system suffered from antiquated procedures, cartels and a confused paper trail that left the door for abuse wide open. In this interview, Rajrishi and I talk about India's financial sector, its earlier dysfunction, how it was fixed—and scammers like Harshad Mehta, “The Big Bull.” Rajrishi Singhal has been a senior journalist, banker and public policy analyst. Last fortnight, DMart reported ₹11.3K Cr of quarterly revenue, clocking a 25% YoY growth, putting it on track for ~₹40K Cr of annual revenue. Radhakishan Damani was a stock trader in Dalal Street. In the 80s, he was head-to-head with Harshad Mehta. Mr D lost big with Apollo Tyres - his first encounter with Harshad. But Damani is not a man to accept defeat easily. Damani learnt the art of trading under Manu Manek - the cobra of D-Street. By the turn of the century, Damani was doing significantly well for himself as a trader. He had won the battle against Harshad, been a value investor alongside Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, and an early predictor of HDFC Bank's supreme success. Yet, he felt anxious to start a business that brought value to Indian consumers for every rupee they spent. D-Mart was born, with its first store in Powai. Since then, it took eight years to grow to 10 stores, but only 5 years for the next 50 stores. It IPOed in 2017, and thereafter never touched the offer price again. With strong unit economics, focus on frugality and high customer satisfaction, will DMart continue being the blue-eyed boy of Dalal Street? A 3-km long revamped stretch, connecting Rashtrapati Bhawan to India Gate, was on Thursday evening opened to the public by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The road, popular as ‘Rajpath' so far, will now be called ‘Kartavya Path'. Part of the larger Central Vista project, the stretch is a glimpse of the future, a peek into the larger design. After the revamped boulevard and soaring spirits, let us shift our focus to fallen heroes of financial markets. They were like shooting stars, who rose, burnt bright and disappeared, leaving behind a trail. And unlike the stars, this trail was that of destruction. People like Harshad Mehta, Ketan Parekh, Ravi Narain and Chitra Ramakrishna had one thing in common - greed. Markets may not forgive them, but lessons can be drawn. These fallen heroes have, time and again, tested the resilience of financial markets. But markets have a habit of moving on. Meanwhile, Indian markets may see intermittent corrections due to policies of global central banks and some other factors, analysts expect India's relative outperformance to continue. It is now the world's fifth biggest equity market. Get a sneak peek into what analysts are buying and selling as India looks to shine amid the global gloom and doom. After the markets, let us shift our focus to a prolonged legal battle, on which curtains were recently drawn in India. In a big win for the Central government, the Delhi High Court has set aside an arbitral award that directed ISRO's commercial arm Antrix Corporation to pay over $560 million to Bangalore-based start-up Devas Multimedia. We break down the entire controversy and more in this episode of the podcast.
The recent arrest of Ravi Narain -- the former chief of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) -- for alleged money laundering is a stark reminder that governance structures still need nurturing. Markets have seen quite a few fallen heroes, and they offer lessons to investors and regulators. Let us have a brief look at some of them How can we talk of market mishaps and not start with Shantilal Harshad Mehta. In the second quarter of 1992, the securities scandal roiled the markets. Till the scam broke, Mehta epitomised rags to riches story -- someone who started as an outsider to Mumbai to become one of leading market brokers in BSE. The Rs 4,000 scam involved Mehta taking advantage of the loopholes in the banking system to manipulate the Bombay Stock Exchange. From a wave of followers flocking to his investment choices, Mehta's fall was stark. He was charged with over 70 criminal offences. The securities scandal brought about many changes in the financial regulatory system. Investors look up to market leaders for investment choices. But not all of them live up to the expectations in terms of conduct. Ketan Parekh was one such figure. A protege of Harshad Mehta, he had learned trading from him. Ketan was revered as the “Bombay Bull” and was famous for picking stocks that turned to gold. Like Harshad Mehta, Parekh exploited the loopholes in the market and faced allegations of insider trading and manipulating stock prices. He was also accused of misrepresentation of facts to borrow from the banks. After Harshad Mehta, Ketan Parekh had markets on the boil and took regulations for a toss. Another billionaire market leader whose enviable rise was jaw-dropping and eventually fell prey to his own ambition was Jignesh Shah. Shah revolutionised commodities trading in India when he set up Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). He later launched the National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL), the country's first electronic spot exchange for commodities, which eventually led to his downfall. Shah was arrested in a Rs 5,600 crore payments scam, where contracts were sold without collateral, at NSEL. This marked the beginning of the fall of his empire and Shah was forced to move out of everything that he had built. From market stakeholders, let us move on to the regulators themselves. Chitra Ramakrishna was part of a core team that built the tech-driven National Stock Exchange, now a favourite for retail investors. Chitra Ramakrishna brought with her an understanding of debt markets to NSE. When she was appointed head of NSE in 2013, Chitra Ramakrishna was one of the rare women CEOs leading a bourse. But in 2015, reports emerged about the co-location scam where select traders were allegedly given preferential access to data and trading systems through the co-location facility at the exchange. There were also allegations of money laundering. This has severely hurt the credibility of the exchange. Ramkrishna resigned from the NSE in late 2016 and earlier this year, the CBI took her into custody. Even as the Chitra Ramakrishna continues to dominate headlines, the enforcement directorate has arrested former boss of NSE, Ravi Narain in a money laundering case. Narain was the longest serving chief of the NSE, from 1994-2013. Under Narain, NSE established an edge over BSE and facilitated large volumes of derivatives trading. But then, the shadows of the co-location case haunted him. Earlier this year, Narain was questioned by CBI for his role in the co-location scandal and regulator Sebi had also imposed a penalty. Allegations of governance lapses during his tenure as NSE chief marred his image. Deven Choksey, MD, KR Choksey Investment Managers says regulations have always been in place, but individuals always found a way to overstep these norms. The systems and frameworks should be more simple With strict regulations in place, the governance standards have improved leaps and bounds over the years. Effectiveness of these norms sh
The Big Bull of Dalal Street, India's Warren Buffett, Man with the Midas Touch, the Eternal India Optimist, King of the Stock Market – the legendary investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala carried many nicknames. His death on Sunday at 62, prompted an outburst of tributes from businesspersons, politicians and investors big and small who followed his insights and stock bets. Jhunjhunwala's investing career started in 1985 with 5,000 rupees of borrowed money. At the time of his death, his net worth is estimated at $5.8 billion or 46,000 crore rupees. His first big profit came from the 5,000 shares of Tata Tea he bought in 1986. In three months, Jhunjhunwala tripled his money. There was no looking back after that. In the late 1980s, the qualified chartered accountant made a leveraged bet on iron ore exporter Sesa Goa which brought him his first crores. He bought the stock at 25-26 rupees and sold the holding in tranches, riding the stock till it reached 2,200 rupees. His investment in Tata Power also paid off at the time. Jhunjhunwa's affinity for Tata group stocks continued. In fact, Tata's Titan Company made him the most wealth. He first purchased the jewellery and watch maker's shares in 2002. His other stock holdings from Tata group were Tata Motors, Indian Hotels Company and Tata Communications. He also multiplied his investments several times in stocks such as Lupin and CRISIL. His biggest holding at the time of death remained Titan, accounting for over Rs 11,000 crore or one-third of disclosed portfolio value. Although famous for his bets in listed stocks, Jhunjhunwala did not shy away from taking bigger risks through private market investments He reaped a windfall when three of his portfolio companies, Nazara Technologies, Metro Brands and Star Health and Allied Insurance, hit the public markets last year. A Business Standard analysis showed that 76% of the value of Jhunjhunwala's disclosed portfolio emerged in the last seven years after he turned 55 and the biggest gains came in the past two years. The value of his disclosed portfolio rose from 8,431 crore rupees in March 2020 to 30,652 crore rupees in August 2022. Raamdeo Agrawal, Chairman & Co-Founder, Motilal Oswal Financial Services says, he was an ‘economic philosopher', liked making predictions. Jhunjhunwala was a terrific bargain picker and he always tried to help his friends, be it with money or guidance, says Agrawal. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was astute not just as an investor who picked stocks for long-term holding but as a trader too. In 2018, he said he made a lot of money by shorting stocks and one of his biggest fortunes came from short selling in 1992 when the Harshad Mehta scam roiled the markets. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala had his misses too in stocks, like Dewan Housing Finance Corporation, DB Realty and Mandhana Retail While some of his private investments paid off handsomely, In March last year, he acknowledged that half of his 20 private equity investments by then had turned out to be duds. His last bet was Akasa Air, in which he held a 40% stake. Motilal Oswal's Agarawal described this bet as the ultimate bargain, as Jhunjhunwala made the most of the discounts offered by the aircraft manufacturer. Jhunjhunwala made his last public appearance at the inaugural flight of Akasa, on August 7th. Among India's notable philanthropists, Jhunjhunwala's faith in the India story and bullish commentary on the economy and markets was visible till the very end. Such was his infectious optimism for India that Jhunjhunwala told a business news channel six days before his death, that regardless of global developments, Indian markets will grow, but at a slower pace. According to him, India was entering a golden age.
As our country celebrates its Platinum Independence anniversary, here's a throwback on the many events that brought financial markets to where they are today. Even before India got independence in 1947, it had at least one stock exchange up and running in BSE in 1857. The other prominent exchange, the NSE, was incorporated in 1992, and was recognised as a stock exchange by market regulator Sebi in 1993. BSE, meanwhile, remains one of the world's oldest stock exchanges and the 8th largest exchange in terms of market capitalisation. One of the first few steps taken by the government post-independence was enactment of The Capital Issues (Control) Act that set the ball rolling for the Indian capital markets. And as investors equated investing in stock markets with wealth creation, the pool of investors kept growing over time. At the end of fiscal year 2021-22, the total demat account holders in India stood at 89.7 million compared to 35.9 million at the end of FY19 – up almost 150% in three years. In all these years, veterans have innumerable stories of booms and busts spread across decades. Within a decade of independence, India saw its first market scandal, involving Life Insurance Corporation of India and Haridas Mundhra group. The scam led to the resignation of the then finance minister. After the markets stablised, Reliance Industries launched its initial public offer in 1977, which market mavens say, brought about the equity cult in India. In fact, Dhirubhai Ambani had booked an entire football stadium in 1985 to hold its annual general meeting - a gala event for its 12,000 shareholders back then. And then there was no looking back for the equity markets then. After the big-bang ‘reformist' Budget in 1991, FPIs and FIIs were allowed to invest in Indian equities in 1992. Today, they hold stocks worth around a fifth of India's total market capitalisation. The period, thereafter, saw more frequent troughs than peaks. The Harshad Mehta scam hit the markets in April 1992, when the Sensex tanked 13%. While Mehta died in 2001, the stories of his modus operandi live on through OTT series like Scam 1992. The crashes that followed, include the Dot-com collapse of 2000; the 2004 fall post NDA's defeat in the national elections; and 2008's market slump amid the Global Financial Crisis. The GFC led to a sharp crash with the Sensex plunging 63% in 2008 to under 7,700 levels. 2008 also saw India's financial capital under siege amid the 26/11 attacks, rattling investors. The last market crash came in 2020, when the world was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Sensex and Nifty closed at their lowest level in four years, after nosediving 33% in just 13 trading sessions. In the commodity market, WTI crude oil futures dropped 306% on April 20, 2020, to settle at minus 37.63 dollars a barrel. The one-day plunge was the largest based on records going back to 1983. But, between these crashes, there were periods of massive gains. India's Sensex touched 1,000-mark for the first time in 1990, and marched to hit the 10,000-mark in 2006. The index, then, hit the milestone of 25,000 in 2014, and scaled mount-50K in 2021. The lifetime high for the markets was during the same year. Going ahead, as India looks forward to its Centenary year celebration 25 years down the line, equity investors in India are optimistic that the BSE Sensex 30 will have scaled the 100,000-mark by then.

If you are a new-age investor who joined D-Street in 2020, Umesh Mehta of Samco Group has few ruled which one should consider while trading, he elaborated on them in the Market Podcast with Moneycontrol. The last year might have felt like a breeze as the only direction in which the market went was on the upside especially for someone who started trading in April. Well, things might not remain the same as the market goes through up and down cycles. Legendary investor once said that “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked”. This was one reason which led to the fall of Harshad Mehta, a registered broker, back in ’90s. Harshad Mehta used the loopholes in the Indian Banking system & Bombay Stock Exchange transaction system to rig prices of dubious companies and defrauded Rs 5,000 crore from financial markets. A new Bollywood movie on Harshad Mehta with actor Abhishek Bachchan ‘The Big Bull’ is set to make its debut on April 8. “Harshad Mehta was a Street smart guy who was bullish on the economy, but with greed taking control, he overleveraged largely borrowed from financial institutions which led to the fall,” explains Umesh. Avoid over-leveraging is one key rule out 5 which investors should take note of while trading which could reduce your losses by 90%: 1) Overtrading/Leverage: The number 1 reason why traders across the globe are ruined is overtrading. Harshad Mehta is one example. Even large corporates have not been able to make up due to large amounts of debt in their balance sheet. Ideally, 1% of capital should be the loss he should bear, and for the seasoned player, it is 2%. 2) Don’t Mix Trading with Investment: Investors should avoid mixing trading with investments. If you lose in a trade it is better to book losses and move out rather than staying with the stock. 3) Black Swan Events: Yes, there will be events that might not be in our control, but as a trader, one should cover their open positions every day with a trailing exit or a stop loss. 4) Never average a loss: Investors should avoid averaging a loss. Averaging a loss is the biggest mistake. 5) Knee-jerk Reaction: There will be knee-jerk reactions to events such as news, earnings, etc. Sometimes the reactions are favourable while most of the time it might go the other way. It is best to avoid knee-jerk trading.
