The method requires a commitment of 12 minutes a day, which includes 10 minutes of decompressing and accessing the unconscious mind, and 2 minutes of tracking and reflection. Resistance to change and self-sabotage can arise when trying to adopt healthier habits, but acknowledging the positive intentions behind these behaviours and devaluing the old habits can help in the process of upgrading. Finding the right coach or therapist is crucial, as not all coaches are made equal. It's important to have a good rapport and feel comfortable with the person you're working with. BEST MOMENTS "I just kept my body in fight or flight mode... I just needed to wait and recover." "It's very hard for people who come to see me to acknowledge the fact that part of what is causing these symptoms or prolonging these symptoms is what is going on in their head." Welcome to this episode of Healthy AF! Zane Griggs' interview with Jason Atkinson, host of the Health Hackers podcast. In this inspiring conversation, Jason shares how he overcame his own health struggles and is now helping others to do the same. At 254 pounds and 33% body fat, Jason was diagnosed with high blood pressure, but instead of relying on medication, he decided to take control of his health and find alternative solutions. Through his journey, he realized that the medical system is not set up to help people get healthy and that we should take charge of our own health. Jason made significant changes to his diet by cutting out wheat and focusing on meat, and increased his workout routine, leading him to lose over 50 pounds. He has since maintained his weight under 200 pounds for seven years, following a low carb, animal-based diet. Jason's transformation inspired him to become a personal trainer, and he now helps others achieve their health goals. Jason's story is a testament to the power of making positive changes and taking charge of our health. If you want to learn more about his journey, you can visit his website at eatmeatnotwheat.com. Welcome back to the Healthy AF podcast, it's Zane Griggs, joined by Kylah Mook, a fitness performance and nutrition coach who specializes in helping women optimize their health around their menstrual cycle. Kylah explains that many women are unaware of the different phases of their menstrual cycle and how it affects their hormones and body. She breaks down the four phases of the cycle - menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and luteal - and explains how hormone levels change during each phase. Kylah emphasizes the importance of nutrition and lifestyle habits in supporting hormone levels at each phase. For example, during the follicular phase, when estrogen levels are high, she recommends a high-fat, low-carb diet and intermittent fasting to support the rise of estrogen. Conversely, during the luteal phase, when progesterone levels are high, she suggests increasing carbohydrate intake and minimizing fasting to support insulin levels and build up the uterus lining. Kylah's insights offer a new perspective on women's health and encourage women to pay more attention to their menstrual cycle in order to optimize their health and transform their life in the best ways possible. If you want to learn more about Kylah's approach to menstrual cycle optimization and how it can benefit your health and fitness goals, be sure to hit play and listen to the full episode and check out the links below! Today we are tackling a very important topic - seed oils and their impact on our health. As you probably know, seed oils are also known as vegetable oils, and they're everywhere in processed foods and restaurants. The top ones to watch out for are soy, safflower, sunflower, corn, cotton seed, canola, grape seed, and rice brown oils. These oils are high in linoleic acid, an omega-six fatty acid that's been linked to the rise in obesity, type two diabetes, heart disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Dr. Kate Shanahan, who is one of the first to raise the alarm about the negative impact of these oils, has coined the term "hateful" for these oils. And it's no wonder - these oils are incredibly high in linoleic acid compared to the traditional fats we've been using for thousands of years. In fact, linoleic acid has increased from 9% of our body fat in 1959 to 22% in 2008, which can only come from our diets. The problem with these seed oils is that they're relatively new to our food system, and they've only been around since the introduction of Crisco in 1911. Prior to that, we didn't see much of the diseases that these oils have been linked to. And it's not just the correlation - if you look at the numbers, you'll see that the use of these oils has paralleled the rise in obesity, type two diabetes, and heart disease, while traditional fats like tallow, butter, lard, olive oil, and coconut oil have not shown the same correlation. Hit play to hear this episode of the Healthy AF podcast is all about educating you about the dangers of seed oils and how to make informed choices about what you eat. The information about the correlation between these oils and the rise in diseases is backed up by peer-reviewed studies, and it's something that we all need to be aware of. By choosing to avoid these hateful oils and opting for traditional fats, we can help keep our bodies healthy and strong. Episode Minute-by-Minute Recap: 0:16 The hateful eight: A short list of seed-oils 1:28 What is Linoleic Acid and why it matters 4:19 When seed-oils first came on the food scene 6:30 The Linoleic Acid concentration in each oil 8:46 Why you need to double-check your avocado oil 13:24 5 Studies everyone needs to know about when it comes to seed oils 21:19 Terms to start searching for to avoid the oils 22:38 How these oils could make us vulnerable to disease 27:44 How long it takes for seed oils to leave your body Connect with Zane: Join The Healthy AF Club: http://HealthyAF.Club Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zanegriggsfitness ReLyte Electrolytes by Redmond Real Salt https://shop.redmond.life?afmc=Zane Links For This Episode: See the Charts and Graphs mentioned on this PDF: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_G0XbEtQDuNOgYZMyOP7mKTbzsftWzmp/view?usp=share_link Dr. Cate Shanahan's blog https://drcate.com/seed-oils/ Increase in Adipose Tissue Linoleic Acid of US Adults in the Last Half Century https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC4642429/ Dietary Linoleic Acid Elevates Endogenous 2-AG and Anandamide and Induces Obesity https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3458187/?fbclid=PAAaaGHjo-VupP3i1wJ4_mfsEXbRHVZdux0OyoiGoXPppgvb6fsmnzjCW-g_U Consumption of a high fat diet rich in omega-6 PUFA for only 4 weeks instigates mitochondrial damage and causes cardiac dysfunction https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17023268/ 4-HNE, a byproduct of linoleic acid directly correlates with obesity, growth of visceral fat and insulin resistance. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28088621/ Linoleic acid can cause endothelial dysfunction. Today, we're going to dive into a topic that's been on my mind for the past 25 years as a fitness professional - our flawed nutrition guidelines and the ideas behind them. Do you ever wonder why our nutrition guidelines, which have only led to increased metabolic diseases, continue down the same path despite decades of failure? Well, there's a strong driving force behind it all. (Can you guess what it is?) Hit play to learn more! The famous 1979 food pyramid recommended 6 to 11 servings of grains, leading to weight gain. The guidelines were established by politicians and nutrition scientists, including Mark Hegsted who was paid by the Sugar Research Foundation to promote sugar and blame saturated fat for heart disease. Hegsted later became head of the USDA and drafted the nutrition guidelines. The food pyramid was released in 1980 and updated every 5 years. The nutrition guidelines have been influenced by politics and the food industry, including organizations like the USDA, Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Last year, two articles revealed the extent of industry influence over these organizations. 95% of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Council members had conflicts of interest with the food and pharmaceutical industries. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics became a pro-industry voice, accepting corporate contributions and investing in companies like Nestle and PepsiCo, even if it clashed with their original mission of public health. Academic institutions like Harvard and Tufts, heavily funded by corporations, have been recommending a low-fat, plant-based diet and vilifying meat, full-fat dairy, and saturated fats for decades. With 65% of the US diet being processed food and 80% of the US being metabolically unhealthy, it's clear that this isn't working. Eating whole foods is the solution. That's why I created the Healthy AF club, a community of like-minded individuals who support each other and receive weekly coaching from me in an effort so we can all learn the truth together. Emotional eating is a common phenomenon that many people struggle with, but often goes unnoticed. It involves turning to food to cope with difficult emotions, rather than eating because you are hungry. Emotional eating can lead to consuming more calories than your body needs or can use, which can cause health problems. However, there are ways to overcome emotional eating and manifest true health by setting healthy boundaries and cultivating self-love. In this 2-part series, we will hear from experts in mindful eating, emotional healing, self-doubt, and setting healthy boundaries. We'll explore some behaviors and thought patterns that may increase your likelihood of becoming an emotional eater, and how to change them. In the first two clips, Allison will discuss an overview of how to get healthy AF, then we'll talk about mindful eating and how to become aware of your emotional eating habits and how to change them with a food and mood journal. Then, we have JJ Flizanes discussing self-doubt, avoiding self-sabotage, emotional healing, and the law of attraction. JJ says we can't create long-lasting change when we are doing it from a place of "I'm not good enough" or "I'll be good enough when I am fit, healthy, thin." Instead, she encourages us to get healthy AF from a place of self-love. Finally, we end with Laura Powers talking about how to set healthy boundaries. Laura emphasizes that whatever we are choosing, we get sent more of that. Therefore, it's essential to show the universe what we want more of by creating more of that in our lives every day. Are you ready for a total health transformation? In today's episode of Food Heals we're talking all about how to get healthy AF with 4 simple steps. Did you know that most of us gain extra weight between Halloween and the New Year? Let's be honest - it makes sense! This time of year is full of fall celebrations, family get-togethers, gift giving, and a two month food fest - one that often ends in weight gain and feeling worse on January 1st than you did just two months ago. The problem is that weight gained during the holiday season usually takes months to lose according to the New England Journal of Medicine. And many of us never lose the weight, packing on extra pounds that stay on and accumulate, year after year. In fact, researchers found that it took much longer to lose the weight than to gain the weight. So I don't know about you but our goal at Food Heals over the holiday months is to have fun, and enjoy the holidays, but not become a statistic! That's why on today's episode we'll go over four steps to completely transform your health with functional medicine, peptide therapy, daily habits, and emotional healing. Today's show was created to inspire you that you can absolutely reach your health, wellness, and weight loss goals - now matter what time of year it is! Because, remember, the body is designed to heal itself when given the tools it needs to do so. So let's give it the tools for transformation! Tune in to learn: How to find the perfect diet that is right for you A brand new weight loss secret that for everyone who has tried everything to slim down and nothing has worked (Hint: it is Elon Musk approved) Four small daily habits that can completely change your life - and your body Why we have food addiction and how to heal it for good - Hint: it's emotional How to get healthy AF in 2023 And more To have a total transformation together and get healthy in 2023, go to: FoodHealsNation.com/Transformation Thank You to Our Sponsors! I am thrilled to share a little about me so you can get a sense of the passion and dedication that is present at Healthy Living Coaching. From Amy...I started my professional life in 1995 as a Registered Nurse with an Associate's degree in Nursing. I loved my time at the bedside taking care of, educating, providing dignity, and comforting patients and their families. In 1999, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my bachelor's degree from University of Rochester (NY), and in 2002 finished my Master of Science in Nursing degree, becoming a Critical Care Nurse Practitioner. Later that year I was honored to pass my board exam and be a national board certified Adult, Acute Care, Critical Care Advanced Practice Nurse.Meanwhile, in my personal life, I became a mom in March of 2001 (Maggie), October of 2002 (Max), and again in November of 2004 (Molly)! It was a busy time and I chose to leave my nursing career for the moment and take on being a full-time Mom. In addition to being with the children, I found two passions: CrossFit, when I became an athlete, trainer, and eventually gym owner, and Hickory Day School, where I was president of the board and volunteer. As the children grew and my life shifted, I looked to reignite my professional life. I never let go of the nurse in me and now I had a new love for training people at CrossFit as well. I knew I loved both roles for the same reason — I got to educate and inspire people to take control of their health, have more confidence and self-efficacy, and thrive in their lives! I just wasn't sure the best way for me to make this a career…Then BOOM! The perfect email at the perfect time perfectly intersected my passions. I opened an email from Duke Integrative Medicine offering the Health and Wellness Coaching program and I was lit!! Health coaching was my next big chapter. I attended the Foundation and Certification program offered at Duke over the next year (2019-2020) and Healthy Living Coaching was born!Since then I have worked with people to create inspired health for lit up living! It has been a calling for me and a privilege to walk alongside people as they take responsibility and power in areas of their health that have been lagging behind. Together, we go from defeated, anxious and out of control of their health to in control, “lighter” (in both ways!) and finding everyday joy. I haven't been sick in like 5 years. I've probably vomited once or twice over that period from having too many beers but I haven't actually been sick from catching a cold/flu or had something that puts me in bed or where I've needed to go to the doctor. I haven't always been this way though. Growing up, I would fall sick every few months, nothing major but like most people, there would be several times a year where I wasn't feeling well for a couple of days. About 10 years ago I met a guy who claimed that he hadn't been sick in about 7 years which I thought was BS. My belief was that everyone has to get sick every couple of months to give the body a bit of a recharge so it can get healthy again. Even though, I found it hard at the time to believe that this guy didn't get sick (because it wasn't a reality for myself and everyone I knew) I now get it. There's more to health than just eating the right foods and exercising. I know plenty of people that eat much healthier than me and exercise much more but still get sick a few times a year. When it comes to my health, I prioritize it, I work on it every week but I don't do anything extreme. No extreme diets, no extreme exercise, no magic pills. Make sure you subscribe to my podcast to stay up to date with episodes I release most weeks. Thanks for joining us for West Seattle Daily Ep. 25 on this Wednesday, brought to you by Sea-Town Real Estate. I'm your host, Christian Harris. Did you know there is a new coffee shop that just opened in West Seattle? With beet root lattes and fun eye-catching aesthetics, this coffee shop is Instagram ready for all you millennially out there. From the Eater Seattle website: In a competitive Seattle coffee landscape, there’s a new player on the scene adding a splash of neon — and some serious Millennial energy. Lula opened this weekend at 4451 California Ave SW in West Seattle, with a menu of playfully-named items like “B*itch Better Have My Matcha,” “Healthy AF” options (such as a red velvet latte with cacao and beet root powder), and bright Instagram-friendly artwork along the walls. Lula is owned by 27 year-old Taylor Platt (who has nine years of experience working in the coffee industry), and the eight-person staff consists entirely of women in their 20s. Platt tells Eater Seattle that her goal was to try to stand out from the crowd with a “happier, lighter mood” than some of the other cafes around the neighborhood. The eye-catching mural is by local artist Tori Kirihara, and the decor — including the giant “Coffee” sign — was all created by Platt and her crew. Lula tries to skew toward healthy options for the drinks menu, with collagen powder lattes (rather than ones made with regular milk) and a turmeric-flavored option blended with oat milk, while aiming to limit ingredients with refined sugars. All beans are espresso roasts from Cutters Point Coffee Co., a fair trade-focused roaster from Gig Harbor (and Platt’s former employer). On the food side of things, there are burritos from neighboring food truck El Chapulin Oaxaqueño, along with some pastries and bagels. Platt also wants to give back to the community by following the example of businesses such as Conscious Eatery, which donates a meal for every one sold. Right now, that means connecting with local schools on fundraisers, but she hopes to get to a point where every transaction has a charitable component. Beyond that, Platt says she wants to make sure people come first, before profits: “If someone’s having a bad day, the coffee’s on us.” Now that is a coffee shop and attitude I can get behind. My next coffee will be from Lula.
