When Jesus said, "...whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me," He wasn't just giving us a moral lesson. He was literally putting Himself in the shoes of the hungry, the sick, the stranger, the prisoner. Every act of kindness, every moment of compassion—it's like you're doing it for Him. This isn't just about charity. It's about seeing the face of Jesus in every person who's struggling. The homeless man on the corner. The single mom barely scraping by. The kid who never seems to fit in. Jesus is right there, in the places we might overlook. He doesn't draw a line between Himself and the less fortunate. He stands with them. He is them. If you ever wondered how to love Jesus, start with the people who need it most. That's where you'll find Him

Austin has almost 7,000 unhoused residents, including about 1,200 in shelters, a population that has swelled in the past few years. Meanwhile, a ban on camping that the city lifted and then voters reinstated has forced Austin to reckon with how it addresses homelessness and what happens when people illegally camp in the city. After a state ban reinforced the city's, and the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the limitations, the city was flush with federal cash, $95 million of which was dedicated to homelessness. Now, as a so-called fiscal cliff approaches, Austin must decide where to prioritize, where to partner, and where to let resources die. Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by David Gray, Austin's Homeless Strategy Officer, to discuss it all. We'd like to thank Tecovas, who makes our favorite Western wear in town, for being our exclusive launch sponsor. Want some more Austin news? Then make sure to sign up for our Hey Austin newsletter. Welcome to our podcast featuring Sean Cononie, a compassionate individual who has dedicated his life to helping the homeless community. Sean's journey began when he started feeding the homeless right after high school. In 1997, he encountered John McCormick, a homeless man in need, and took him to a hospital, which marked the beginning of Sean's journey in providing housing and support to the homeless population.Initially not intended to be a shelter, Sean's actions led hospitals to start sending him homeless individuals in need of housing, effectively transforming his efforts into a shelter overnight. Despite facing legal challenges from the city later on, Sean and his team persevered, ultimately winning the case and continuing their mission to serve the homeless community. In addition to his work with the homeless, Sean operates the Mass Shooting Prevention Center Crisis hotline, aiming to provide assistance to individuals at risk of committing violent acts.To learn more about Sean's work and support his initiatives, visit http://homelessvoice.org. Wil and Liam are back with Susan talking about what the homeless in Portland really need, and it's not tiny houses. They need to kick addictions, get teeth, get an ID, get a ride and sometimes that's all it takes to get them off the streets. Dinner and a Movie has great gift cards you can give instead of having mugs printed with your company name for client gifts. The focus is on helping one person as a time, not unlike Binky Patrol comforting one child at a time. Don't try to solve the issue with one big stroke. You can't. No one can. It takes time with individuals. Throwing money and building tiny houses won't do it. It just tucks them away and lines the pockets of those involved in "solving." Listen to this episode to hear real stories from people helping those on the streets of all ages in this episode of All Volunteer, All Heart from Binky Patrol, "How to REALLY help the homeless in Portland." 60 percent of all of those on the street are there because of drug addiction. They don't want to be restricted by the rules of tiny home communities. They need recovery - now. Most have suffered from neglect or sexual abuse as children. These are the two connecting threads. They have varying levels of education, skills and unique interests that could have them independent if they could break the cycle of addiction. This isn't just adults, this is for teens on the streets too. Help Dinner and a Movie help them.

In this episode of Change It Up Radio, April Cargill joins me to talk about helping the homeless and transforming lives through the power of running. My guest today, April Cargill, who is 57 years old and born and raised in Harlem, NY, began running at her local YMCA 10 years ago, after finally kicking her smoking habit of over 36 years. Since then, she has run several official road races, including 11 full marathons (3 of them overseas), 22 half marathons, and countless smaller mileages. April's next endeavor will be running in the 2022 Boston Marathon, which is known as the world's oldest annual marathon, ranking as one of the world's best-known road racing events. The Boston Marathon draws in over 30,000 runners to Massachusetts and is part of the World Marathon Majors which makes it at the top of any runner's bucket list. Not only is April running through eight cities and towns in the 2022 Boston Marathon on April 18th, but she has also been chosen out of many applicants to run for an amazing charity called Back on My Feet (BoMF), an organization that seeks to revolutionize the way society approaches homelessness. This national organization operating in 15 major cities across the U.S. works to combat homelessness through the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources. For individuals in need, they hope to provide an environment that promotes accountability, practical training and employment resources for achieving independence, and a community that offers compassion and hope. April joins us today to discuss how mentally healing running has been for her over the years, proving to help break through some of the struggles and stresses of life. She also shares how her own experience with homelessness when she was very young makes an organization like Back On My Feet hit very close to home and keeps her running and doing what she can to make a difference. About the Author: When God knit me together in my mother's womb, I believe He added a little extra tenacity and a whole lot of resilience. He knew I'd need it to fight and overcome the battles my life would face. Since I was a little girl there has been an attack on my voice. As a small child I practiced screaming to prepare for the next time I would face my abuser, but when the time came, I couldn't open my mouth. As I grew, life beat the desire to speak up right out of me. I believed I was damaged goods waiting to be discarded by the next person that came along. The pain of the past marked me. Even when I believe I had something to say, I usually kept quiet for fear it would lead to more pain. Rejection, abandonment, loss of love… In my mid-twenties God set me up to meet a series of women, I call checkpoint people, who over the course of a decade would each teach me a different facet of God's character. One would share God the Son, Jesus Christ. Another would reveal God the Spirit and my identity in Christ. Lastly one of my beautiful mentors would show me the love of God the Father that would ultimately lead me to trust God and accept my position as a daughter of the King. Through the years of learning who I was created to be, I discovered the courage to find freedom from a life of abuse. My hearts cry was to be whole, healed, and healthy which led me to ferociously go after the healing my mind and heart so desperately needed. I was determined to be free from the pain of the past. In doing so I've discovered a new way to live. I've found peace that is not of this world (John 14:27). It is now my mission to speak up and comfort others with the same comfort I was comforted with. To encourage women to uncover the lies of the enemy and discover who they were created to be. To walk as daughters who are healed and healthy inside-out. I'm here to tell you sister, if He did it for me, He will do it for you and not only is He able, but He wants to. I now get to do life with my best friend, and the love of my life, James. I am also a mother to three incredible world changers who keep me on my toes and constantly striving to be better. I am a Certified Mental Health Coach through the American Association of Christian Counselors and run a YouTube channel aimed at encouraging women to be the healthiest versions of themselves, inside and out. I promised God if He gave me His words, I would give Him my voice. Here I am Lord, send me… I have been in ministry for ten years, advocating for women to discover the truth of who they are in Christ. I am a certified mental health coach and desire to help others overcome the pain of the past and live with peace and freedom. About her Book: Imagine believing you were sentenced to a life of isolation, fear, rejection, pain, and loneliness. That there was nothing beyond the darkness of the prison you'd been thrown into. This was how Kathryn lived most of her life. Held captive by the lie that what was done to her defined who she was, until she heard the voice of God calling her out. This is one woman's story of escaping a life of abuse, breaking free from the lies that bound her, punching fear in the face, and discovering her true identity. Through her memoir, Kathryn reminds us that no matter how painful our journey is, God desires us to live in freedom. We have the opportunity to live fully aware of our identity in Christ. Kathryn shares personal revelations and biblical principles that led her to the truth of who she was made to be. Truth...that is the same for you. Dow and Joey talk with Scott Foster, Executive Director of The Journey Home, about his mission to "Love God and serve people" in Rutherford County.
Host Robert Strock asks the question: "Are we balanced in how we view ourselves and use our resources?" To address the growing issues of global warming, homelessness, immigration reform, and other world and societal problems, there's an overwhelming need for each individual to broaden their view. As we learn to see beyond our immediate needs and question ourselves and society, we better use the resources at our disposal as individuals and as a society. Currently, the planet is headed toward rock bottom. Consequently, building awareness is crucial to healing. Healing those in need, healing ourselves, and healing the planet.
