In this powerful episode, Jon Owen, a compassionate leader dedicated to building community with those in vulnerable situations, shares from his experience and the insights and wisdom he has gained from years of serving others. Jon opens up about his own journey and offers practical guidance for anyone going through tough times or supporting others facing adversity. Through his work with the Wayside Chapel community, Jon has learned invaluable lessons about the importance of not defining people by their struggles, the transformative power of presence, and the role of empathy in supporting people in difficult times. Together, Stewart and Jon discuss how to face struggles with courage, seek God in the midst of pain, and hold onto hope even in life's darkest moments. In this episode, you'll discover: Practical ways to offer genuine support to others without minimizing their pain. How embracing vulnerability can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections. Insights on building resilience and sustaining hope in challenging times. The importance of being fully present with others in their struggles. How faith and community can be anchors in times of despair. Simple actions you can take to create a compassionate, inclusive environment. Why defining people by their strengths—not their struggles—can be transformative. ... and much more. Welcome back to Sunburnt Souls, where we chat about the intersection between faith and mental health. Today, we're getting into the journey of Jon Owen, a super likeable guy that follows Jesus wherever he leads. Jon ditched the whole 'promising career' gig in Computer Science to do something truly extraordinary. He and his wife Lisa opened their home in Mount Druitt, Sydney to those battling addiction, homelessness, and the fallout from life's tough knocks. Their place became a real refuge for over a dozen souls, thanks to Jon and Lisa's big hearts. They didn't just give these folks a roof over their heads; they gave them a sense of belonging. Fast forward to today, and Jon's the Pastor and CEO at Sydney's Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross. He's still at it, spreading love and hope wherever he goes. Jon Owen's all about showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a huge difference. His story's a reminder that we all have the power to change lives for the better. The manger was just the beginning... Christmas. A time of presents, family, Christmas carols and joy as we celebrate the birth of our Saviour King. However, all too often in this Christmas season, the story finishes in the manger. We don’t stop to consider Mary and Joseph’s visit with their baby to the temple, or the loss of thousands of children due to Herod’s hunt for the Messiah. We sometimes also forget the frantic race to Egypt for Mary and Joseph in order to protect their newborn son. Over the course of the next 10 days, we will consider the events in the arrival of our Saviour. How the word became flesh, the virgin teenager who became the mother of our Saviour King, her husband’s wrestle with heart and mind, the birth of their son, the one who would rescue us all, the prophesies of Anna and Simeon, the heartbreak of a nation and the Saviour King becoming a refugee. All these events are woven together in a tapestry that proclaims God’s deep, sacrificial and saving love for us! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Darlinghurst Theatre Company recently unveiled a new two-pronged leadership team with current Co-Artistic Director Amylia Harris promoted as sole Artistic Director and founding CEO Glenn Terry taking on the newly created role of Executive Director. This restructuring is accompanied by Terry's announcement that he plans to retire in early 2022.For Glenn Terry, this has been a long time coming, and the culmination of many years spent searching for the right person to whom he could entrust his legacy – someone who understands that social inclusion is part of the Darlo DNA.Inclusion has been a hallmark of Glenn Terry's work, since the 1992 establishment of Darlo Drama, an acting school for adults of all ages and from all walks of life. The following year he presented an all-female staging of Waiting for Godot, before founding Milk Crate Theatre, which is celebrating 21 years of theatre making specifically by and with people who have lived experience of homelessness, mental health issues and disability. In 2005 Terry established Critical Stages Touring to deliver outstanding independent productions to every corner of the nation, and in 2009, after many years of lobbying for a larger space, the City of Sydney invited Terry to collaborate on the design and construction of the 200-seat Eternity Playhouse, which became the home of Darlinghurst Theatre Company in 2013. The company's former home, which Terry had also fitted out at the Reginald Murphy Hall in Potts Point, now houses the Hayes Theatre.Few people can claim to have given a city two brand new theatres and founded four unique performing arts organisations that continue to thrive. Glenn Terry has done just that. With all these achievements behind him, Terry is confident he can finally hand over the artistic reigns to a new Artistic Director and begin the process of transitioning out of the company he's spent the last thirty years building. The Stages podcast is available from Apple podcasts, Spotify, Whooshkaa and where you find your favourite podcasts. www.stagespodcast.com.au

In this episode, I speak with Lachlan, an early career Social Worker whose final placement saw him working in a youth drug and alcohol NGO providing specialist homelessness services. This piqued Lachlan's interest in the social complexities of this client group and saw him working as a new grad Social Worker in an Opiate Treatment Program based in the inner city, where he has found a passion for domestic violence, mental health, institutionalisation, and homelessness. It's needless to say that 2020 has been a challenging year for most but a personal highlight has been finding my new creative home in the historic district of Potts Point in Sydney. For Season 3 of Style Stories I wanted to honour this vibrant community and celebrate coming together. What better way to do this than to partner with a community organisation that brings life and laughter to those who need it most, like the Wayside Chapel, the heart and soul of Potts Point, a Sydney village which has been likened to New York and Paris. Like these great cities, Wayside joyfully embraces diversity and brings together all walks of life in many creative ways but notably through it's Op Shop, which is renown for being a treasure trove of donated designer digs as well as a vital source of support for the organisation. Of course I talk all things style with my guests this season however I also hope to honour their stories by highlighting their contribution to their community not only through their creative pursuits but by looking good, feeling good and most significantly doing good. To help introduce Season 3, I spoke with CEO and Pastor of the Wayside Chapel, Jon Owen, whose human spirit and contribution to community echoes through all the upcoming episodes of Style Stories. I hope you can sit back relax and enjoy our conversation. Produced by MITT Work.

In the past four days God has spoken to me in four different ways about being in the world but not of the world. But now I am returning to you so Father, I pray that they will experience and enter into my joyous delight in you so that it is fulfilled in them and overflows. I have given them your message and that is why the unbelieving world hates them. For their allegiance is no longer to this world because I am not of this world. I am not asking that you remove them from the world, but I ask that you guard their hearts from evil, For they no longer belong to this world any more than I do. John 17:13-16 TPT   Saturday night ... After dinner on Saturday Ken and I escaped to his office (aka man cave) for some peace and quiet. We were watching some of the analysis of the political antics of the week, Ken promptly fell asleep (we are getting older!) and I managed to just stay awake (it was only 7.30pm) to watch the next show, Australian story.    The episode was Leading the way - Love over hate: We step inside the Wayside Chapel to see what’s in store for the new man behind one of the toughest, yet most rewarding jobs in Sydney. Sunday night ... At church we were blessed to have a visiting pastor, James MacPherson preaching at the 6pm service. He spoke about where our identity comes from - our intrinsic value, not externals. And building on this he also spoke to us regarding what we do in our day to day lives and challenged us to ask how God would go about doing that job/profession? Lots of food for thought.  Monday night ... Not really sure what I was doing (it was at least 36 hours ago), perhaps taking a brain break from work. Anyway I was skimming through the Eternity News website, which I find is a great alternative to the ABC news website, and I found this video "Prominent pastor Carl Lentz on fame, criticism and #MeToo When watching this video the word that God highlighted to me was demonstrate.  Tuesday morning ... I had a couple of hours waiting for my car to be serviced, so after doing some work, I took a brain break and continued reading a book that a wise lady has lent me ... Kid's Ministry is for Real, a collection of true stories that show the 'why' of kids' ministry, by David Goodwin. There is so much gold in this book, such as... I understand from Erickson's psycho-social stages that children in the middle childhood years need to experience success to have a healthy and confident transition to adolescence. It doesn't mean they need to be top of the class, but they do need to shine in one or more areas. Sadly, we all know many children who have experienced little or no success. Those of us in kids' ministry are in a unique position to help them. There are a couple of reasons I have shared this today.  Firstly I found it interesting that God would use four different ways to communicate the same message to me, be in the world, but not of the world, love people my way. I am not sure what this means for me in terms of actions. I have an inkling, but will continue to seek Him for direction. Secondly to encourage you to look at what and how God may have been speaking to you recently, is there something He has been communicating to you through different ways? Are you listening? Do you know what He wants you to do next? And will you have the courage to do it, knowing that He has gone before you and is with you? Let's finish with prayer Jesus prayed for us ...   And I ask not only for these disciples, but also for all those who will one day believe in me through their message. I pray for them all to be joined together as one even as you and I, Father, are joined together as one. I pray for them to become one with us so that the world will recognise that you sent me. For the very glory you have given to me I have given to them so that they will be joined together as one and experience the same unity that we enjoy. You live fully in me and now I live fully in them so that they will experience perfect unity, and the world will be convinced that you have sent me, for they will see that you love each one of them with the same passionate love that you have for me. Graham Long wears two watches. One is his regular watch. The second belonged to his son, James. It stopped at one minute to midnight during the first year of James’ death – a reminder to live in the present moment. Graham doesn’t care what car he drives, how big his house is or whether you think he’s doing a good job. He also believes that people are not problems to be solved, but people to be met. He reminds us to let go of the ‘expert mode’ and meet people in the ordinary moments of life. This is what he calls ‘the invitation into the awesome’. Graham Long is a community leader, accomplished author and CEO and Pastor of the renowned Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross. For over fifty years, Wayside has provided unconditional love, care and support for people on and around the streets. Graham has touched the lives of thousands of Australians and created a community free of judgment and the normal barriers that divide society into ‘us’ and ‘them’. Graham’s motto for Wayside is 'Love Over Hate' and he believes that action should come before preaching and community engagement is more important than going to church on Sunday.
