When 15 blankets arrived with messy selvage edges despite "clear" instructions, I blamed the volunteers. That was not great, but then I asked: What if the problem is my communication? In this vulnerable episode, I share how frustration over "ruined" Binky Patrol blankets led to a profound leadership insight about expert blindness. After 30 years of nonprofit work, I discovered I've been assuming knowledge that first-time volunteers simply don't have. Learn why I'm inviting children to critique our instructions, how to recognize when your expertise becomes a communication barrier, and practical strategies to bridge the gap between what you know and what volunteers understand. For nonprofit leaders tired of repeating themselves or fixing well-intentioned mistakes, this episode offers a fresh perspective on volunteer guidance that transforms frustration into growth opportunities. #NonprofitLeadership #VolunteerManagement #CommunicationSkills #ExpertBlindness

Last week, we began our conversation with Cynthia Luvlee, CEO and Founding Board Member of Shyne. If you missed that episode, I encourage you to go back and listen as we discussed the economic challenges facing vulnerable communities and how innovative organizations are responding. Today, we continue that important conversation by exploring Shyne's revolutionary approach to supporting survivors of trafficking and exploitation. Cynthia and her unstoppable team of dedicated volunteers and employees work tirelessly to provide survivor entrepreneurs with access to small business support, mentorship, coaching, education, and capital. They envision a new economy where survivor business owners network to maximize impact and accelerate innovative solutions. By generating equity and shifting power, they believe financial independence and freedom for all survivors is possible. In this second part of our conversation, Cynthia shares how Shyne has reimagined support services by focusing on purpose, dignity, and entrepreneurship rather than traditional "rescue" models. We'll explore how building ongoing relationships and responsive programming has created a sustainable community where survivors design their own paths to success. As fellow nonprofit leaders, there's so much we can learn from each other's approaches, even when our missions differ. Let's dive back into this enlightening conversation. In 2012, just two days before her 16th birthday, Sunnie Carney lost her father to homicide. Through her personal journey of grief, mental health struggles, and ultimately healing, she discovered a critical gap in support services - one that affected countless children in similar situations. This revelation led her to found Children of Homicide Victims (COHV) in Kansas City, an organization dedicated to restoring hope, love, and faith to children who have lost parents to violence. COHV serves children from infancy through age 17, with a particular focus on ages 8-16 - a developmental period already complicated by natural growth and change. These children often face misdiagnosis in school settings, where their trauma responses are mistaken for behavioral disorders. Through COHV's comprehensive support system, they receive academic assistance, mental health resources, and perhaps most importantly, a community of others who truly understand their experience. What sets COHV apart is its team - 75% of staff members are themselves children of homicide victims. This shared experience creates an authentic connection with the children they serve, showing them living proof that their circumstances don't define their future. The organization's name, abbreviated as COVE, reflects its mission to be a protected harbor for these young souls navigating unimaginable loss. In this powerful conversation, Sunnie shares success stories of transformation, discusses the unique challenges faced by grandparents suddenly thrust into primary caregiver roles, and explains how COHV is working to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Her work reminds us that while we cannot prevent every tragedy, we can create communities of support that help children not just survive their loss, but emerge as future leaders and agents of positive change. About Sunnie Carney: Founder, Executive Director Sunnie was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. She graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2017, where she was awarded a bachelor's degree in Communications, and she is currently attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis to obtain her Masters degree in Education. Sunnie has a huge heart for children. She identifies as a child of a homicide victim. Aside from COHV, she is also a member at The Refuge KC, the Youth Director of Refuge Little League Youth Ministry. Sunnie's goal is to be the voice and the light that leads people to change and the help that transforms a wounded child's heart and mind.  Links from this episode: https://www.cohvkc.com/ https://www.instagram.com/cohvkc https://www.facebook.com/cohvkc https://www.linkedin.com/in/sunnie-carney-700779183/

Have we investigated potential partnerships with other local non-profits that have complementary missions or serve similar populations? Have we explored partnerships with local government agencies, such as social services departments, to identify areas of collaboration or support? Are there any local service clubs, like Rotary or Kiwanis, that we could engage with for volunteer recruitment or community outreach? Have we contacted local media outlets to discuss potential partnerships, such as public service announcements or featured stories? In this episode, we'll be sharing some creative and affordable ways to show your volunteers just how much they mean to you and your cause. From small tokens of appreciation like pins and stickers to heartfelt gestures like personalized thank-you notes and special events, we'll explore a variety of ideas to help you celebrate your volunteers and keep them motivated and engaged. So grab a cozy blanket, settle in, and get ready to be inspired by the power of volunteer recognition. We are all in this together, working towards a common goal of making a difference in our communities. So, let's lift each other up, celebrate our successes, and show our volunteers just how much they are appreciated. Here are some key suggestions for non-profits mentioned in the episode: Recognize and thank volunteers through small gifts like pins, stickers, or patches. These can be ordered in bulk to last for years and distributed to volunteers at events or through chapters. Apply for grants specifically aimed at volunteer recognition and support to cover the costs of items like pins, stickers, and T-shirts. Partner with organizations like the Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, who appreciate patches and can help spread awareness about your non-profit. Use services like Vistaprint  or lynmar.com to order promotional materials such as brochures, banners, and postcards. Take advantage of coupons and sales to save on costs. Create a store or online platform where chapters can easily order branded items for their volunteers. Organize contests and challenges for chapter leaders and volunteers to engage them and reward participation with small prizes like fabric kits or branded items. Encourage volunteers to wear and use branded items to promote your organization and make it easier for people to learn about your mission and how to get involved. Plan and budget for volunteer recognition initiatives, as they are important for keeping volunteers motivated and committed to your cause long-term. CopyRetry

Kmetic shares how her experience as a prosecutor showed her the need to help children after going through trauma and the justice system. She details the year-round work Angels in the Outfield does to give kids opportunities to pursue their passions, from sports gear to college visits, and provide a sense of normalcy. Kmetic emphasizes the power of helping children heal through positive outlets and relationships. As Susan describes their upcoming collaboration providing blankets to Angels' holiday store, Kmetic thanks participants for giving children warmth, security, and care. Together, they model uplifting partnerships that allow grassroots groups to transform children's lives. Will you join them by volunteering time or donating to organizations like Angels in the Outfield? About Shannon Kmetic Shannon was a Deputy District Attorney for Clackamas County when she founded the Angels in the Outfield in 2009.  She had been a prosecutor since 1996, and her caseload for quite some time had involved domestic violence and child physical and sexual abuse cases.  Shannon had just prosecuted one of the worst sexual abuse in her career, and she realized that more had to be done for this young victim and others like her. She was worried that the "system" was not equipped to deal with long-term issues related to victimization and healing. Shannon was blessed with a wonderful family and supportive parents, but not all children, including vulnerable children who are abused and neglected, get to experience what she did. Shannon's hope was, and is, that the Angels in the Outfield will provide hope to children who fall within our mission. Getting to experience or do things that they may not have otherwise, or participate in an activity or event, or have something that will assist them daily will be the impetus for healing.  Links from this episode: Angels in the Outfield Binky Patrol MrBallen Foundation

That quote captures this episode with Texas EquuSearch's team as they tell their stories, how they found this organization, and how honored they are to find their why. This is the first half of the interview with Tammy Phillips, Director – Business Operations; Angelina Farris,  Deputy Director; Ken Sandor, Field Operations Manager; Mary Allbright, Research Analyst and family Liaison; and Mark Edwards, Field Operations Manager. This is part of the MrBallen Foundation series, introducing you to non-profits and volunteer opportunities nationwide.  About TXEQ Texas EquuSearch is a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer search and recovery organization.  Texas EquuSearch never charges a family or law enforcement entity for their services. Headquartered near Houston, Texas, resources have evolved far beyond the original horse-mounted searches. Today, searches include the use of ground searchers, side scan sonar, ground penetrating radar, boats, aircrafts, drones, and ATVs. Many law enforcement agencies across the United States call on the resources of the organization's highly skilled searchers to assist in their lost, missing or murder victim cases. Throughout the years, Tim Miller and the organization have received numerous awards from law enforcement agencies and grateful community groups, recognition from media partners, and countless thank you's from families of missing loved ones. Texas EquuSearch has assisted in thousands of cases throughout the US and abroad giving some form of resolution to distraught families as well as closure to many criminal cases. There is no doubt that Executive Director, Tim Miller and his team lend credence to the age-old saying… “Volunteers are not unpaid because they are worthless. They are unpaid because they are PRICELESS!”. How TXEQ Started “Don't thank me, thank Laura.” – Tim Miller Many great and meaningful things have been born from adversity. In some cases, the response and resiliency to that adversity has resulted in monumental benefits to humanity. Such can be said of Texas EquuSearch after the tragic and senseless kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Laura Miller in 1984. Laura's father, Tim Miller, knows all too well the heartbreak and trauma that other families feel when a loved one goes missing. In August of 2000, Tim Miller founded and became the Executive Director of Texas EquuSearch which began as a horse-mounted search and recovery team. Through the years, like-minded volunteers have given their own time, talents, resources, and dedication to help recover and return lost and missing loved ones to their families.

As part of our MrBallen Foundation series, we have Bev Warnock, the executive director of Parents of Murdered Children, an organization dedicated to supporting families devastated by the unimaginable loss of a loved one to violence. As I spoke with Bev, I couldn't help but feel the weight of her mission. The pain and grief that these families endure is unfathomable. But within that darkness, Parents of Murdered Children brings a glimmer of hope, a lifeline for those navigating the turbulent waters of grief. The organization's origins trace back to a tragic incident in 1978 when a young woman's life was cut short by the hands of her ex-boyfriend. From this heart-wrenching loss emerged a gathering of parents who, like broken pieces, found strength in coming together. And thus, Parents of Murdered Children was born, offering solace, compassion, and a sense of belonging to those who've walked this unimaginable path. In this episode, Bev shares the struggles these families face – the legal battles, the lingering questions of why, and the challenge of rebuilding lives while never letting go of precious memories. She tells us about the profound importance of remembering those lost, and how even the simplest acts of remembrance can comfort a grieving heart. But it's not just the families that bear the weight of grief; the entire community also suffers. Bev talks about how parents struggle to cope with their grief while helping their surviving children navigate their pain. It's a heartbreaking balance that requires understanding and support from everyone around them. So, as we delve into this episode of All-Volunteer, All Heart, let us remember the strength and courage of those facing unimaginable heartbreak. And may we all be inspired to reach out, listen, and remember the stories of those who may no longer be with us but whose memories will forever be cherished in the hearts of those they left behind. Bev and Susan gave a few challenges and action items in this episode: Reach out to someone who has lost a loved one and share a favorite memory or story about the person. Let them know that their loved one is not forgotten and that their memory lives on in the hearts of others. Encourage friends and family members to be patient and understanding with grieving parents or loved ones. Offer a listening ear and let them express their emotions without judgment or pressure to move on. Challenge yourself to attend a support group or grief workshop if you have experienced the loss of a loved one to violence. Connecting with others who have gone through similar experiences can be a crucial step in the healing process. Consider volunteering or supporting organizations like Parents of Murdered Children that provide vital resources and support to families affected by violence. Your contribution, whether big or small, can make a significant difference in someone's life. Be mindful of the impact of domestic violence and strive to raise awareness about its devastating consequences. Support initiatives that address and prevent violence within communities, as fostering a safe and nurturing environment is essential for everyone's well-being.   Links from this episode: POMC.org MrBallen Foundation Binky Patrol Comforting Covers for Kids

The encounters with other families and transplant patients illuminated the challenges faced by those who lived far from medical centers or lacked the support of a partner. Steve realized the privilege they had of living just a short distance away and being able to care for their son together. Witnessing the struggles of other caregivers who couldn't easily leave the hospital, they saw the significance of the little things they often forgot, like coffee gift cards, cozy blankets, or brand-name toothbrushes.
