In this episode of Interpreting India, we delve into the often-overlooked history of India's early relationship with China. Author Vijay Gokhale former Indian Foreign Secretary, takes us back to the 1940s and 50s, exploring pivotal moments like India's quick reaction of the People's Republic of China and its involvement in the Taiwan Straits crises. Beyond familiar narratives of border disputes and Tibet, Gokhale sheds light on a "forgotten" rivalry: the struggle between a declining British Empire and a rising United States, which powerfully shaped India's diplomatic dance with both China and the West. We navigate the complex alliances under Prime Minister Nehru, gleaning valuable lessons for understanding India's present approach to Asia and China. Gokhale's book, "Crosswinds," offers a new perspective on this crucial period, prompting us to reconsider the forces that shaped a nation's foreign policy. So, tune in as we unpack the past, revealing its enduring relevance for the present and the future.EPISODE CONTRIBUTORSVijay Gokhale is a nonresident senior fellow at Carnegie India. Mr. Gokhale retired from the Indian Foreign Service in January 2020 after a diplomatic career that spanned thirty-nine years. Have you ever wondered what's happening in the 98% of a football match when players aren't actually touching the ball? It's a fascinating thought, right? Considering what we typically focus on is that mere 2% of on-ball action! Well, you're in for a treat today. Today we welcome Paul Neilson, General Manager at SkillCorner, to the show and he's going to blow your mind about this very topic. SkillCorner has been doing some pretty incredible stuff in the football industry, making a name for themselves with their data-centric approach. And in this episode, Paul's going to share how they do it, including: How SkillCorner helps football clubs and other sports bodies make sense of their data to enable effective decision-making. Valuable learnings from their experiences with top-tier clubs globally, including the framework that best clubs from LaLiga, The Premier League, etc. use to analyze data. A sneak peek into what the future looks like for SkillCorner, especially after dipping their toes in the NBA and NFL waters. And of course, Paul's going to talk about the journey that brought him here and the qualities he thinks the most successful analysts possess. The amount of data that could be analyzed during a match is incredible, but more so when understanding that the advantage comes from scaling those analytic capabilities. Finally, remember WFS Europe is quickly approaching (September 20-21), and we're excited to announce that Paul will be joining us! Moreover, SkillCorner is part of the family of industry partners who will help us make the event a reality. After this engaging conversation, we're buzzing to see what's in store for Sevilla! Don't miss out on the opportunity to help shape the future of football! Head over to www.worldfootballsummit.com to buy your ticket now. World Football Summit is where the football industry meets.

Joined today by former MLB all-star and 14-year veteran, Bob Tewksbury. Bob and I talk about me waking him up at 5am on accident on the day of the interview. We hear about him being drafted by my NYY and refusing to live in the big apple. We then talk about his book "Ninety Percent Mental: An All-Star Player Turned Mental Skills Coach Reveals the Hidden Game of Baseball" and how relevant it is in today’s game. Bob tells me what he’s doing now with the Cubs, how he approaches the superstars of the game and why mental wellbeing is so important in baseball. He shares what it was like dealing with the mental difficulties of being a pitcher, being on 6 different teams and how golfers, kickers and other sports are realizing the importance of being mentally realistic and strong. I ask bob if he would make it in today’s game or even given the chance to make it, his answer is surprising. From baseball movies to why Wrigley is so special and more.
