At its height, the influential SCOTUSBlog provided Supreme Court coverage that drew comparisons to the comprehensive way ESPN reports on sports. But while the blog was becoming required reading for attorneys, law students, and journalists, its founder was allegedly racking up millions in gambling and tax debts. High-profile Washington attorney Tom Goldstein was indicted last month on federal charges allegedly tied to an ultra-high-stakes poker hobby involving billionaires, professional gamblers, Hollywood stars, and trips to Macau. Goldstein—a seasoned litigator known as a risk-taker both in court and at the poker table—was arrested Feb. 10 after prosecutors said he violated the terms of his release by hiding cryptocurrency accounts from pretrial services and transferring funds without approval. He has since filed an emergency motion challenging his detention. On this episode of our podcast, investigative reporter Alexia Fernández Campbell and legal reporter Holly Barker discuss the story that's riveting the legal world. In Episode 2 of “Exposed”  from our friends at San Francisco Public Press, we explore a little-known chapter in San Francisco's nuclear era: human experiments carried out to assess the health effects of radiation. Scientists from the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, located at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, designed and executed at least 24 experiments that involved gathering data from humans — in some cases, injecting test subjects with radioisotopes or having them ingest fluids laced with trace amounts of radioactive materials. Even football players from the San Francisco 49ers were enrolled as test subjects in these so-called tracer studies. We hear from military veterans who were sent on a mysterious mission to spread radioactive substances onto rooftops at an Army base near Pittsburg, Calif., for an experiment the radiation lab played a role in designing. Some recount experiences of witnessing nuclear bomb blasts in the Nevada desert. We also examine a national pattern of human radiation experiments revealed by Eileen Welsome, the author of a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation, who shined a light on similar practices conducted by government facilities, hospitals and other institutions.   Featuring: Eldridge Jones, served in the military and was part of Operation Stoneman; Merle Votaw; a Navy veteran who participated in Operation Stoneman II; Eileen Welsome, author of "Plutonium Files"; Holly Barker, Anthropologist and professor at the University of Washington who studied the Marshall Islands. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 28, 2023 is: arboreal • ahr-BOR-ee-ul • adjective Arboreal is a literary term that means “of or relating to trees.” It can also mean “living in or often found in trees,” as in “arboreal monkeys.” // Despite taking weekly hikes on the same trail, she never ceases to be amazed by the forest's arboreal beauty. See the entry > Examples: “[The satanic leaf-tailed gecko's] mottled brown skin, replete with mossy splotches and vein-like ridges, makes it the perfect imitation of a decaying leaf. Any predator clever enough to see through its arboreal disguise and mount an attack will be in for a fright. The leafy gecko opens its mouth, sticking out a blood-red tongue and unleashing a chilling scream that will frighten off the boldest of predators.” — Holly Barker, Discover Magazine, 7 Oct. 2022 Did you know? Arboreal took root in English in the 17th century, at a time when language influencers were eager to see English take on words from Latin and Greek. Apparently unsatisfied with the now-obsolete word treen (“of, relating to, or derived from trees”), they plucked arboreal from the Latin arboreus, meaning “of a tree”; its ultimate root is arbor, meaning “tree.” That root arborized—that is, branched freely (to use the term figuratively): English abounds with largely obscure words that trace back to arbor, meaning “tree.” Generally synonymous with arboreal are arboraceous, arborary, arboreous, and arborous. Synonymous with arboreal specifically in the sense of “relating to or resembling a tree” are arborescent, arboresque, arborical, and arboriform. Arboricole is a synonym of arboreal in its “inhabiting trees” sense. (The influencers may have overdone it a bit.) Arboreal is far more common than any of these, but other arbor words also have a firm hold in the language: arborvitae refers to a shrub whose name translates as “tree of life”; arboretum refers to a place where trees are cultivated; and arboriculture is the cultivation of trees. And of course we can't forget Arbor Day, which since 1872 has named a day set aside for planting trees. Despite its spelling, however, the English word arbor, which refers to a garden shelter of tree boughs or vines twined together, has a different source: it came by way of Anglo-French from the Latin herba, meaning “herb” or “grass.”

Reporters Ronnie Greene and Holly Barker just released a five-part series that looks at how guardianships can go wrong—from wealthy celebrities like Britney Spears to indigent senior citizens. She has always had a passion for knowledge and fitness and was taught the importance of education and travel from her grandma and amazing work ethic from her mom and dad throughout her entire life. She went on to university where she met her now husband. She graduated with a business degree and moved on to a career in finance where she discovered the corporate world was not for her. Her love for business as well as fitness came together as one when she took the plunge into the entrepreneurial atmosphere with her husband in 2010 opening their first Anytime Fitness Franchise location in Saskatchewan Canada. They went on to open their 2nd Saskatchewan location in 2011 and have just opened their 3rd location and first in BC Canada this past December. Holly began competing in bikini competitions in 2011 and obtained sponsorship with Magnum Nutraceuticals, a Canadian supplement company in 2012. She travels twice yearly to represent her sponsor and stands behind the quality products, selling the entire line in her 3 Anytime Fitness Locations. Passion for all things fitness, fashion, food and fotography (she calls it the 4F pillars of success) has taken her on a journey to work with some of the best photographers in the industry, has allowed her to contribute to multiple publications in the industry and has enabled her to put her entrepreneurial acumen to work; creating an EBook titled Behind the Photo w/ Holly Barker, a fitness app titled Total Body Fitness Challenge available on iTunes and incorporating and building up a lifestyle apparel brand mhbworld.com to help promote a lifestyle of adventure in health and wellness. Holly loves travel and adventure and is passionate about the platform that social media allows her to spread the 4F lifestyle and to inspire many around the world. No one wants to think about death and dying and even fewer people want to talk about it. That's what makes today's episode so AWESOME. Holly Barker is the founder of an organization called Grief Anonymous, a group she founded following the death of her husband. She created it because she NEEDED it and thousands of others, it turns out, do too. It's a labor of love born out of the saddest chapter of her life, designed to help others when they find themselves in the throes of grief. I hope you will listen and then share with someone who might need to know about this organization. Here is Sherrie's interview with Holly Barker.

The original Launching Pad Restaurant opened in 1960 by John Korelc under a different name, and while attending the National Restaurant Convention, Korelc paid $3500 for a fiberglass Muffler Man to draw attention to his restaurant. Korelc had his newly purchased fiberglass giant updated to keep in line with the 1960’s space race as an astronaut with helmet and rocket, and renamed the restaurant, as the "Launching Pad”. There was a naming contest and the fiberglass giant soon became known as The Gemini Giant which has always been a popular photo opp for many traveling through Wilmington, just 60 miles out of Chicago. In 2007, the Launching Pad was purchased from Jerry and Sharon Gatties, the owners at the time, by Morey Szczecin, but, after a struggle, the landmark closed again in 2010. In October 2017, it was purchased by Holly Barker and Tully Garrett, who announced plans to restore it "to what it was in its glory days," with the Gemini Giant remaining as a recognized Route 66 landmark. Both the Launching Pad and the Gemini Giant were inducted into the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame in 2000.
