SHOW NOTES: S4-E05   THE MYSTICAL SPEAR OF DESTINY!!! In this episode we'll tell you all about the Spear of Destiny, also called the Holy Lance or the Holy Spear. It's allegedly the lance that pierced the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross during his crucifixion. For lovers of history and the occult alike, there are ancient objects which continue to intrigue and puzzle us. Among these are the Holy Grail, the Shroud of Turin and the Holy Lance or ‘Spear of Destiny'. For some, the lance is a medieval artifact only half as old as some claim. For others, the spear is an object of vast occult power. It does exist, but trying to chase down the various legends about it can be challenging. But we'll give it a shot so you can decide for yourself whether this relic from history actually exists. From 1095 to 1291 CE, thousands and thousands of knights, peasants, nobles, soldiers, and more left Europe for the Holy Land around Jerusalem to take land and power away from Muslims, and into Christian hands. Pope Urban II issued a speech in 1095 calling Christian to take up arms and reclaim "Christian" lands. As incentive, he promised salvation for all who died fighting for what he said was God's will.  But was it ever about God's will? Or was it about Pope Urban's will? Were the Crusades ever really about anything celestial? Or were they about man and power?  Were they mostly about the Catholic Church struggling to consolidate power amongst European Christian monarchs and make sure Christian leaders knew who was really in charge? Holy War? Or power grab? Either way, the decree of Pope Urban set much of the western world on a path we are still following today nearly a full 1,000 years later. Wet Hot Bad Magic Summer Camp tickets are ON SALE!  BadMagicMerch.com Get tour tickets at dancummins.tv Watch the Suck on YouTube: https://youtu.be/pnXcKKOcYakBad Magic Charity of the Month: Over the years, we have tried to donate back to our local community here in Coeur D Alene. In this episode the awesome scholar Dr. Andrew Latham guides us into the role of disease and how it defined ancient and medieval history. We set out in the ancient world exploring pandemics like the Plague of Athens, the Plague of Justinian and the Plague of Cyprian; and as we explore the impacts that these diseases had on city states and empires. We explore how these diseases caused society and history to evolve from the decline of paganism to the dominance of Christianity in the West and later the expansion of Islam in the East. Slowly we reach the end of the Western Roman Empire, the survival for the time being of the Eastern Roman Empire and the birth of the "Barbarian" Kingdoms of Europe as we reach the foundations of the Medieval World. And with a new era comes and equally vicious disease determined to make its mark in our history and that is the Black Death. We watch as Europe is engulfed in a nightmare of apocalyptic proportions. However, there is a silver lining. Society had to adapt. And we see the evolution of medieval society and the working class as the chains of feudalism and serfdom are cast to the way side and the foundation of the complex capitalistic world that will create the borders and parameters of our own world. This is a story of disease. A story of collapse and revival. It is a story of triumph. It is our story. Welcome to lecture one of the series A Very Brief History of the Crusades, 1095-1291! This episode is taught by Dr. Andrew Latham and he carefully and thoroughly guides us through the background of the Crusades and how Holy War and Crusading was created in the Medieval World in "Western Christendom." We begin with the Plague of Justinian and the stagnation of the Byzantine and Persian Empire which allowed the Arabian Armies of Islam to burst out and expand across the Middle East, into Africa and Europe. We explore the creation and concept of Crusading and Holy War in "Latin Christendom," and the complexity and nature of these terms. We see the evolution of the idea of Crusading and Holy War as it changed and adapts to be used within Christendom itself when dealing with various heresies and heretical groups and we use the term heretic very much in a historical context rather than a modern view. We also see the concept expand to cover missionary expansion in the Baltic's but what is even more interesting is how we see how different these Crusades were by region and how they differed from each other whether it was in Northern / Eastern Europe, Iberia, the Middle East and Southern France. I loved this and I hope you all enjoy it as well. This Writer's Cut edition of The Malta Exchange features fascinating behind-the-scenes commentary read by the author. In the latest thrilling Cotton Malone adventure from international bestseller Steve Berry, one by one the seven precious relics of the Arma Christi, the weapons of Christ, are disappearing from sanctuaries across the world. After former Justice Department agent Cotton Malone witnesses the theft of one of them, he learns from his old boss, Stephanie Nelle, that a private auction is about to be held where incriminating information on the president of Poland will be offered to the highest bidder - blackmail that both the United States and Russia want, but for vastly different reasons. The price of admission to that auction is one of the relics, so Malone is first sent to a castle in Poland to steal the Holy Lance, a thousand-year-old spear sacred not only to Christians but to the Polish people, and then on to the auction itself. But nothing goes as planned and Malone is thrust into a bloody battle between three nations over information that, if exposed, could change the balance of power in Europe. From the tranquil canals of Bruges, to the elegant rooms of Wawel Castle, to deep beneath the earth in an ancient Polish salt mine, Malone is caught in the middle of a deadly war - the outcome of which turns on a secret known as the Warsaw Protocol.

Cigar of the Week - San Cristobal Seleccion Del Sol from Ashton Crafted by Pepin Garcia in 2009, the del Sol features a sun-grown wrapper grown on the Garcia’s “Estrella” farm in Esteli, Nicaragua. 100% Nicaraguan tobacco makes these special cigars a special event for your palate. Wrapper: Nicaraguan Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Nicaraguan Made In: Nicaragua Sizes: Robusto - 5 x 52; Belicoso - 5.5 x 52; Toro - 6 x 52 What else have you been smokin' Dale? Cusano 18 Paired Maduro Robusto - 5” x 50 Manufactured in the Dom. Rep. using all Dominican filler. The wrapper is a Connecticut maduro, and Brazilian Mata Fina maduro wrapper leaf is also added. Packaged 18 to a box, but the “18” refers to the claim that the Dominican Oro filler has been aged for 18 years. Medium bodied and flavorful, but just a touch of a bitter edge in the last 3rd that fights with the savory nature of the cigar. Up until then, a well balanced mix of nuttiness, coffee and some salt was the profile. Avail for around the $6 mark most places, MSRP is closer to $7. Cusano 18 Double Connecticut Robusto - 5” x 50 A Connecticut shade wrapper and binder cover a filler blend of Dominican Piloto, San Vincente Olor and 18 yr old Dominican Oro. The first half of this cigar was very nice. Creamy herbal and citrus flavors in a medium bodied smoke. None of the dry, grassy bitterness I was expecting. However, just past the halfway point, the double layer of Connecticut shade tobacco jumped up and revealed it’s normal character. The cigar became harsh and bitter. Maybe Cusano cigars are meant to be smoked Davidoff style - only half way........ Illusione ~HL~ Maduro Lancero - 7.5” x 40 From the special run of maduro wrapped Holy Lance in 2010, leading up to the release last month at IPCPR of the original “numbers” line of Illusione in maduro for 2011. It’s no secret that one of my preferred vitolas is the lancero. I also prefer maduro wrapper quite often. Add those to the Illusione line of Nicaraguan puros and I’m in cigar heaven! This cigar is outstanding is all respects - construction, burn, flavors, room aroma, body - and provides one of those special smoking experiences. It has the pig-tail cap. The wrapper is full of tooth and oils. The cigar is complex, with earthy flavors and a semi-sweet chocolate tone. Also some dark fruit. I’ve enjoyed one of these occasionally over the past few months, and now look forward to trying many of the other sizes in the maduro capa. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Brickhouse - At $4.99 it is a value priced cigar. Although I did not enjoy the first few I tried, since it has received such high praise, I decided to try it again. For this event I chose the Corona Largo at 6.25x46 (having previously smoked the robusto and Toro vitolas). I chose to smoke this cigar with a fresh palate and a cup of Black Dog Coffee by making it the first cigar of the day. I immediately noticed a sweet fruit flavor, much like cranberries without the acidity. The cigar produced voluminous smoke and a slight spice tang as it burned smoothy and evenly. The wrapper is a Habano Subido and the guts are pure Nicaraguan. This turned out to be a decent smoke and I think I shall try some more. The cigar does have a slightly harsh edge to the flavor so it may not always be appropriate but it does have its place. It smokes very dry so I prefer it with a coffee or other non-sweet beverage. La Reloba Seleccion Sumatra - A Pepin Garcia true value cigar with bigger-than-its-price flavors and construction. Flavorful and not quite as powerful as other DPG creations, this is one fantastic smoke. This cigar will let you drift away on a luxury liner while paying for a rowboat. With suggested retail prices starting at $4.50 for the corona (which at 5 5/8 inches long by 46 ring gauge is very large for that vitola) and going as high as $6.50 for a Torpedo, which measures 6 1/8 by 52 ring. The brand comes in two other sizes, Robusto (5 by 50, $5.60) and Toro (6 1/4 by 52, $6.00) and in a Habano wrapper as well. Cusano - I recently smoked 4 Cusano cigars of various styles and I disliked every one. Harsh and not evenly constructed they do not showcase the best of the cigar maker's art. The biggest surprise is I have liked these in the past. So was it a bad batch, a bad retailer or has the brand slid downward since being consumed by Davidoff? Based on the recent shakeup at Davidoff, it may be growing pains for what is surely a fine brand. What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar, the Cohiba Churchill 7 x 49, was selected by executive producer, Liz.
