In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Ian Hunt-Duffy about his debut feature Double Blind. Double Blind is in Irish cinemas from Friday 9th February and is available on demand and digital February from 13th. Directed by Ian Hunt-Duffy and written by the award-winning screenwriter Darach McGarrigle and starring British actress Millie Brady (The Last Kingdom, The Queen's Gambit, Roadkill) alongside horror icon Pollyanna McIntosh (Vikings: Valhalla, The Walking Dead, The Woman), Double Blind follows seven young test subjects who must face a terrifying side effect when an experimental drug trial goes horribly wrong – if you fall asleep you die. Trapped in an isolated medical facility, they must find a way to escape, and somehow manage to stay awake. The feature which was filmed in Limerick and Dublin had its world premiere Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) last year and has gone on to screen at numerous festivals across the globe including Leeds Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, Galway Film Fleadh and Belfast Film Festival. Produced by Simon James Doyle for Dublin-based production company Failsafe Films in association with Los Angeles-based indie genre production company Epic Pictures Group and Screen Ireland.

A presentation by Dr Ian Hunt on his recently published paper, Digital Issuance - An Optimal Model for Digital Assets and Transactions, was followed by a discussion with an expert panel and the members of an invited audience, moderated by Future of Finance co-founder Dominic Hobson. Margin pressure exerted by institutional investors and passive investing means asset managers must cut costs but the methods used over the last 30 years – computerisation, outsourcing and offshoring – are no longer sufficient, partly because of rising regulatory costs. The asset management industry needs to move on to a new operating model. If the asset management industry fails to adopt a new operating model, it risks being displaced by the Decentralised Finance (DeFi) industry. Despite reputational issues and a recent loss of value, DeFi protocols have experimented successfully with alternative models of capital-raising, trading and investing, and are attracting interest from asset managers. A further challenge facing the asset management industry is set by unavoidable generational change. Baby Boomers which saved via pensions, funds and housing are being replaced by Millennials and Gen Z, which are not only digitally native but alienated from all existing financial services providers, as their enthusiasm for tokenised forms of finance proves. Tokenisation offers a new operating model. Instead of assets (such as securities) and cash (as payment) being moved between buyers and sellers by a complex eco-system of exchanges, brokers, clearing houses (CCPs), custodians, central securities depositories (CSDs), registrars and paying agents and their computer systems, tokens move between nodes on a network. Ultimately, finance is about the transfer of value through time. Its essence can be reduced to flows of value in which an asset is a purchase of future flows of value (an investment by investors) and a liability is a sale of future flows of value (an issue of equity or debt by an issuer). Financial services exist to facilitate exchanges between investors and issuers. It follows that intermediaries that facilitate exchanges of futures of flows of value between issuers and investors must add value or they will become vulnerable as forms of transactions costs only. In principle, tokenisation can dispense with intermediaries altogether, with issuers and investors holding self-servicing tokens on their nodes only. Tokens differ from conventional financial assets. A conventional equity offers an uncertain promise of capital appreciation and dividend income. A fixed rate bond offers a certain income and a promise of redemption. Mutual funds are more like bonds than equities. What tokens offer is something simpler: a pledge to deliver a particular flow of value in the future. These pledges of future flows of value are made by token issuers to token investors. There are two variants. The first is a “native” token that exists in digital form only (as Bitcoin does). The second is a “title” token or a tokenised underlying analogue asset (such as a company share or a building or, in the case of a Stablecoin, cash and near-cash financial assets). Fulfilment of pledges of future flows of value can be automated by building intelligence into a token, making it a “smart token”. For example, when the date arrives to make a transfer of value such as a dividend or interest payment or rights issue or redemption, it triggers the token to deliver other tokens of the requisite value to the node of the holder of the pledge. Michael Hunter Hunt for Hunter is a 4-piece symphonic rock band based in New York City. “Symphonic rock” may sound like an ambitious genre to claim, but this is a band that was explicitly formed with the intention of creating music without limits or boundaries. Originally conceived in 2014 as an acoustic folk duo by Ian Hunt (drums) and Michael Hunter (vocals/electric violin/keys), Hunt for Hunter found some initial success playing in small bars, cafés and colleges around the Northeast. They occasionally experimented with hiring additional players to play Hunter's heavier, less folksy material, but lacking a clear sense of direction the band eventually came to a crossroads in the winter of 2018. The choice was simple, to take the easy, safer path and continue on as a folk duo, or go for broke and attempt the impossible: form a successful, original rock ‘n roll band in NYC. They chose the latter, and as luck would have it, Chris Kelly (bass) and Patrick Brennan (guitar) were ready and waiting to sign on. All four members had actually played with each other before through their day jobs as professional freelance musicians. Equipped with a considerable level of proficiency and unified by their desire to play exciting, original music they began writing and rehearsing in earnest. Drawing inspiration from diverse influences like Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and more modern bands like Manchester Orchestra, The Dear Hunter and Nothing But Thieves, the quartet began developing an exciting set of music built around their single “Boundaries”. This song was deliberately chosen to be Hunt for Hunter's first recorded output, as it best represents not just Hunt for Hunter's sound and style but their musical ethos: to honor the past and the music that inspires you, but never let the fear of failure keep you from pursuing your art to its fullest. Now poised to share their music with the world, Hunt for Hunter is proud to carry the label “symphonic rock.”

In December 2013 David Cameron took the largest ever delegation of British business people to China, signing over £6bn worth of deals for British businesses. The opportunities for British companies in China clearly remain significant, but there has also been considerable investment in the other direction in recent years too. However, all of this is set against a backdrop of slowing GDP growth, rising wages and regulatory challenges that have led some commentators to question whether investing in China is still as an attractive proposition for foreign companies as it once was. In this podcast, we debate the challenges and opportunities for UK companies investing in China; the size of the prize for Chinese companies investing in the UK; and the significance of David Cameron’s recent visit. We are joined by - Guy Dru-Drury, the chief CBI representative in China; - Daniella Goldman, the director of public policy and government relations at Huawei Technologies UK; - Ian Hunt, the Gabbitas education managing director; and - Duncan Innes-Ker, the Economist Joint Intelligence Unit's regional editor, Asia.
