That's a question a lot of people have, honestly. But a kid named Rosie was bold enough to ask us to investigate why. So, in the latest episode, we dig in on why cockroaches get such a bad rap and why you might want to reconsider if you're not a fan. Only two percent of the world's cockroaches are considered pests. Those are the ones that can live in houses and potentially make us sick. But the vast majority of cockroaches don't bother humans at all! Some, like the social cockroach species known as termites, work to decompose organic material and are hugely important to our environment. So where do people learn negative attitudes toward insects? We dig deep into insects with Jessica Ware, an entomologist and curator at the American Museum of Natural History. She's also the host of the PBS digital series Insectarium. Answers to your questions about cockroaches, termites, dragonflies, praying mantises and more! Download our learning guides: PDF | Google Slide

The Dark Ambient genre evolved out of the Industrial, Experimental, and Noise genres of the 1970s. The arrival of affordable synthesizers, samplers, and effects units in the 1980's led to more complex styles like Ritual Industrial, Black and Doom Metal, Dark Wave, Gothic, and who can forget the reverberating chains and tortured screams of Dungeon Synth? Our yearly immersion in the morbid emotions of fear, death, and horror at Halloween, provides an insight into the more aesthetic and environmental qualities of Dark Ambient. Whereas the horror genres aim to shock and terrify, Dark Ambient seeks merely to disturb, evoke feelings of isolation, melancholy, and confinement, and reflect an atmosphere of gloom and darkness. I'm DR. DARKO, and on this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a subterranean underworld journey for Halloween, on a program called DARKTIME ATMOSPHERES. I don't search for them anymore, my heart still beats for them. Imagine my excitement when I was told that the ENTIRE INSECTARIUM'S ENTOMOLOGIST from Audubon Institute would sit down with me and talk not only ROLLY POLLYS, but beetles, butterflies and SO many more! Zack Lemann, one of the nation's most knowledgeable entomologists (experts in zoology dealing with insects) sat down with me and told me all about my dear rolly pollys as well as so many others! I am left so inspired, invigorated, and excited to share everything I learned with my 3 kids! With that said- THIS IS A MUST LISTEN FOR ALL FAMILIES!Then later, what happens when your carefully planned vacation starts to go south?
