For episode 28 of season 2 we welcome back the noble and scholarly Douglas Batchelor of the What Magic is This? A podcast for those curious about Magic, the Occult, Witchcraft, the Esoteric, the Paranormal and the Supernatural. Douglas has been doing sorcery and magic for close to 20 years. And has a wealth of knowledge and experience. Today we focus on how his practice and areas of interest have changed since his recent move to the west coast of Canada. And we discuss his recent patreon show on Isobel Gowdie, his remarkable memory and his ability to communicate complex ideas. The title for this show is a reference to a phrase used by John Moriarty in one of his many Irish radio interviews where he talked about not sitting well with the modern world and feeling its separation from nature acutely. Consequently he left his academic career and moved home to Ireland to Connemara in Co. Galway. The conversation with Douglas reminded me of Moriarty's phrase not least because of their both moving to a rural location but in a topic that came up in the plus section of the show where we discuss the horror of poorly done TV and film adaptations. And how film becomes less story and more spectacle, that as a narrative form it is exhausted, the well has run dry. We discuss the need for new stories, new dreams and round out the conversation with hope and belief in the young generations and generation to be born will dream new stories and new art into being. The show notes are extensive for this one so do check them out there is a wealth of material to be explored there. Enjoy! Show notes: Website https://whatmagicisthis.com/ WMiT? Happy Spooky Wednesday, everyone! We went a bit off the rails this week with some serious stories and some not-so-serious side tangents. To start, Kala talks about the Governor Sprague Mansion in Rhode Island. The political intrigue is high, but not necessarily the reason for the haunting. Nope, you can blame that on a spurned butler and some people that decided it would be a good idea to make a homemade ouija board—no comic sans involved. And Brittany tells us the tale of Isobel Gowdie. This woman was a victim of the witch trials in 1600s Scotland. After listening to her multiple confessions, we are convinced she was born in the wrong time, because she could have made a killing as a YA author. Creative writing for the win. Fair warning, we never expected to talk about the devil's “member” as much as we did.

Last week I looked at Scotland's most famous witch - Isobel Gowdie and her infernal, mind-boggling, (and quite saucy) confessions. But what is actually going on with the frankly bizarre and incredible account of her witchcraft practice, was she performing shamanic death divination, she did terrible things but was she redressing the imbalance of power in her society by donning the cloak of a witch, was she in a dream cult, the suggestion of this forces us to radically reassess what our dreams actually are, was she communing the devil or was it something else - a land spirit or a spirit helper conjured as a protective entity on account of her harsh life, were her coven being contracted by community members to perform death transference? What is really happening? All my links are here. Get bonus content on Patreon Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/themageswell. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Isobel Gowdie is Scotland's most famous witch and gave the world the idea of a coven and that must contain 13 members. On trial as a witch, four infernally sensational confessions rocked the late medieval world, so much so that modern historians have described her confessions as ‘one of the most remarkable documents in the history of witchcraft.' Todays episode is difficult to listen to in places in regards to how women and those labelled a witch were treated within the legal system. But the suffering Isobel endured wasn't in vain, we have some powerful insights into how this talented woman practiced witchcraft. Ironic, considering the very system that sought to condemn and quell people like Isobel the documents from which are being pawed over and have the ability to empower a new generation of witches, the numbers of which haven't been seen the world before. It's very much the season of the Witch, and possessing powers over life and death - Isobel Gowdie is a blinding beacon. All my links are here. Do you have a witch wound around the word, “coven?”    Let us all take a moment to remember Isobel Gowdie who was the first witch to use the word coven after being tortured for six weeks in four separate torture sessions. Her confession was extracted and she was killed by strangulation and then was burned. On the surface, Auldearn appears to be a sleepy Highland village, the kind of place you might think would pass through the history books, unrecognized. However, the 1600s were turbulent times for Auldearn. The village took its place in the annals of Scotland's dark history in 1645 with the ‘Battle of Auldearn' where over 2,000 Covenanters were slain. Then, in 1662, it became the scene of one of the most bizarre witch hunts in Scotland. The witchcraft confessions by Isobel Gowdie are some of the most extraordinary on record. She is possibly the most famous ‘witch' in Scottish history. This is the woman who gave the world the notion of a coven. Some say that her ghost still haunts Auldearn. Sifting through the information on Isobel Gowdie was difficult: there is far more myth and fantasy surrounding the poor woman than there is fact. We're sharing the first episode of a new podcast series we've just released called Weight of Sand. This is an audio drama exploring the life and lore of Isobel Gowdie. Isobel was accused of witchcraft in 1662. She lived in Auldearn in the Highlands of Scotland and her witchcraft confessions were detailed and vivid. 30 years after her trial, a nearby village of the Culbin was destroyed in a storm and covered in sand dunes. The sand was so extensive the land was called ‘The Sahara of Scotland'. Folklore blamed Isobel for cursing this land as revenge. Weight of Sand explores Isobel, her life, and the environment she is said to have destroyed.  Listen to more Weight of Sand episodes at:  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/weight-of-sand/id1632916019 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6RD2r2aQJTXngkFPcvFgcq Pocket Casts: https://pca.st/podcast/815949a0-df45-013a-d9e1-0acc26574db2 Podcast Addict: https://podcastaddict.com/podcast/4024035 CastBox: https://castbox.fm/channel/Weight-of-Sand-id4994068 Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/weight-of-sand Amazon: https://music.amazon.co.uk/podcasts/7761809b-fe11-4ea2-9491-8c3c6659fd26/weight-of-sand Website: https://www.carryingstream.com/weightofsand/

On International Women's Day in March of 2022, Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, issued a formal apology for the thousands of people Scotland burned at the stake from the 1500s to the 1700s.  Most of those people were women, and it seemed fitting to the First minister, as the first woman to ever hold the title, to apologize during international women's Month (it's every March, guys), on March 8th, International Women's Day, for all the women (and men) the government of Scotland murdered for turning into cats and spoiling ale. We tackle the history of Scottish witches by examining the life of Isobel Gowdie, Queen of the Witches!  As a self-confessed witch in the 1600s, she is the woman who gave rise to witch lore and a voice to fairy lore.  Her life is largely unknown but her four confessions have withstood the test of time, fascinating scholars and witches alike for the last two hundred years. Find out why, and hide the matches, when we explore witchcraft and State-craft this episode!

As we mentioned during our interview, one character who Nancy Hayes Kilgore describes in Bitter Magic is the devil himself. He appears to Isobel Gowdie in a spot where a tree had stood only moments before. She depicts him as a blonde man wearing green, but during their encounter he changes. This week's Write the Book Prompt is to write a character based on a famous non-human entity: a leprechaun, a fairy, a centaur, a cherub, a poltergeist, a ghost. Consider what you feel to be accurate about how this entity has been depicted historically, and how you might change that depiction. Will you use this character in your work without naming who or what it's based on, or will you leave that to readers to identify? Good luck with your work in the coming week, and tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion.   Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro 693

The witchcraft confessions given by Isobel Gowdie (in Auldearn, Scotland in 1662) are widely celebrated as the most extraordinary on record in Britain. Their descriptive power has attracted considerable interest on both academic and personal levels. Isobel Gowdie, the renowned “Queen of Scottish Witches”, was a young Scottish housewife who was tried for witchcraft in 1662. Her detailed confessions, apparently achieved without the use of torture, relates her fifteen years of involvement with the Devil, and offers one of the most detailed looks at European witchcraft folklore at the end of the era of the Scottish Witch-Hunts. The most interesting part is that her testimony and fate are highly debated, still to this day. So, let's find out what she had to say that still has scholars scratching their heads. The four confessions given by Isobel Gowdie to a Scottish court, in May 1662, are seminal witchcraft texts; bringing folk belief in the faerie, the world of familiar spirits, night flight and the coven to stark prominence. This talk shows how a marginal figure, in her own day, moved towards the cultural mainstream, through the works of modern composers, rock musicians and novelist, and was comprehensively recast in the process. Dr John Callow is an author, screenwriter and historian, specialising in Seventeenth Century politics, witchcraft, and popular culture including Embracing the Darkness: A Cultural History of Witchcraft (IB Tarsus 2017).

In the latest episode of The Infinite and the Beyond, we speak with Australian author and teacher, Lee Morgan about her new book A Deed Without A Name: Unearthing the Legacy of Traditional Witchcraft. Lee identifies as a pagan animist – witch and runs a blog titled My Craft and Sullen Art where she identifies herself as a Traditional Witch, non traditional dichotomy-smasher, line-blurrer, bone-singer, folk-healer, head-bender, and sometimes poet. We hear some awesome music by Swallows from their latest album, “Witching and Divining.” Swallows is an Americana/rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota who has recently released their second full-length album, the roots-oriented Witching & Divining. Since its release, Witching & Divining has received strong media support in the Twin Cities and was in rotation on over 160 college and public radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada, including several weeks of charting in the CMJ and Earshot! top 30 on 15 stations. In A Corner in the Occult, we learn about Scottish witch Isobel Gowdie who was tried for witchcraft back in the 17th century. One of most of the witchcraft confessions obtained in trials from the past centuries, Isobel Gowdie's, a flaming red haired woman from Auldearn, Scotland, is said to be the most elaborate and compelling and offers a unique look at what Scottish Witchcraft may have been like. And in The Essence of Magick Series, we consider the values and issues surrounding authenticity. The desire for truth and the concern for authenticity in one's spiritual and religious practice, has a tendency to even filter into one's personal magickal practice. Which begs the question, what does it mean for one's magick to be considered as authentic? Does this issue refer to history and the accuracy of a practice or does it refer to the level of sincerity behind the act? All this an more in this episode of The Infinite and the Beyond. Enjoy!
