Has your effectiveness ever felt compressed, buried under the weight of emotional burden? Diamonds are rare from the Middle East but Tessa Afshar is one of them. A researcher of Biblical history with a Master of Divinity from Yale and an award-winning author, Afshar speaks like one who has probed the Word of God and unearthed the precious. Raised as a nominal Muslim, Afshar thought all religions were the same until one night, in a dream, when Jesus beckoned her to follow Him. Her story is fascinating, but it is her internal struggle with discouragement and anxiety that will keep you riveted. Having experienced abandonment as a teenager and a broken marriage in her early twenties, Afshar found herself dealing with compounded discouragement, not a sinful feeling but one she describes as ‘sin-adjacent' to self-pity and discontent. Opening the door to those, she soon found herself unable to pray, sleep or function at work, but there were answers. If you are experiencing debilitating anxiety, or know someone who is, you will be encouraged as you discover the gems Afshar found through her journey. For Show Notes & Episode Details: https://theinfluencerspodcast.orgGet more inspirational content all week…FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/theinfluencerspodcastofficialINSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/theinfluencerspodcastofficial/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/hearinfluencersYOUTUBE: https://youtube.com/@TheInfluencersPodcastLearn more about Tessa Afshar and get a copy of her book The Rested Soul at https://tessaafshar.com

In episode 218 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with journalist Melissa Fleur Afshar. We came across Melissa through an article she wrote on Newsweek about the contraceptive pill entitled ‘Did My Pill Cause Cancer?' Women Describe How the Pill Changed Their Lives'. In the article she speaks to women and medical experts about the physical and mental impact of the pill on these women and its wider health implications. In this episode we discuss Melissa's journalism journey and breaking into the industry without having the family connections. For industry issues, we discuss the challenges she's felt when receiving feedback on her articles and the vulnerability of that exposure. For Melissa's mental health, we discuss a tumour that her mum developed when Melissa was 17-years-old and the impact that had on her. Thankfully, the tumour was benign and was removed successfully. Melissa's father was also diagnosed with Dementia in early 2023 and we discuss the emotional toll that's taken on her and her wider family in caring for him as the disease affects his mind and behaviour. We finish by discussing her own negative experience of the pill, which she took from the ages of 24 to 25 and which sparked her interest in writing the Newsweek article. We explore why it made her feel ‘lost', provoked an existential crisis in her and led her to eventually come off it. As always, #itsokaytovent You can read Melissa's Newsweek article in full here: https://www.newsweek.com/women-open-about-contraceptive-pill-side-effects-1804620 You can follow Melissa on social media below: Twitter: https://twitter.com/melissafleura Support Us: Patreon: www.patreon.com/venthelpuk GoFundMe: www.gofundme.com/f/help-vent-supp…ir-mental-health Merchandise: www.redbubble.com/people/VentUK/shop Music: @patawawa - Strange: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d70wfeJSEvk

Daria grew up in Fishers, IN where she begun dancing at the age of 3. When she was 13 she experienced her first bout of shame when a teacher pointed at her and told her to "shrink that", referring to a part of her body. Daria pushed passed this traumatic event and would eventually go on to study ballet at the John Cranko School in Stuttgart, Germany. Here, body image became even more of an issues when a teacher told her she needed to lose weight ON THE 3RD DAY. She completed that year of training and eventually said enough is enough. She was able to see this treatment as traumatizing and something that no one should have to go through, so she walked away from ballet at the age of 15.
