Emma Klues, VP of Communications & Outreach at Great Rivers Greenway, and author Vivian Gibson join KTRS' John Carney and Julie Buck to discuss her book, The Last Children of Mill Creek. The once-thriving Mill Creek Valley neighborhood in the City of St. Louis was destroyed and its 20,000 Black residents were displaced in 1959 in the name of “urban renewal”. GRG is hosting a virtual book discussion with Ms. Gibson along with historian Lois Conley, journalist Jade Harrell, and educator Sarah Miller to share experiences of being a part of the Mill Creek Valley community and talk about what we can learn from Mill Creek Valley today. If you missed that discussion live, you can watch it here on GRG's YouTube channel.  Great Rivers Greenway is working with partners to celebrate the stories of Mill Creek Valley residents as part of the Brickline Greenway project. Mill Creek Valley and its former residents will be commemorated through a public art installation by nationally-acclaimed artist Damon Davis on a portion of the Brickline Greenway along Market St. between Compton Ave. and 20th St. Learn more and get involved at www.BricklineGreenway.org/MillCreek.

Jade Harrell with Rachel Winograd, Assistant Research Professor with UMSL, the Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH). She leads an extensive effort called the Opioid Crisis Targeted Response. The opioid epidemic is hitting a lot of people and families in Missouri with no exception. Last year in Missouri we lost upwards of 900 people. It is the biggest public health emergency of our lifetime. Looking at the number of people who died of fatal overdose, 2016 was the biggest year in recent history the numbers are rising. Last year, for example, we lost more people from overdose than we lost from gun violence or vehicle accidents or than we lost at the height of the HIV epidemic in the 90s. We lost more people last year alone than we lost in the entirety of the Vietnam War. Rachel and the organization have been granted 20 million dollars over the course of two years and they're dividing that between prevention treatment and recovery support services. The bulk of dollars are going to treatment. The goal is to close the treatment gap because there are waiting lists of people who are trying to get help and they're told it's three months or it's six months. They also putting funds directly to treatment reimbursement for people who don't have insurance. So if you're looking for treatment or if you have a family member who's looking for treatment for heroin or painkillers or fentanyl, you can get treatment and you can see treatment programs in your area. Hangin With Shawn Stevenson! Well, ‘The Mindset Mountain Podcast' had the privilege of hangin with author of the best seller “Sleep Smarter” and host of the number 1 podcast “The Model Health Show”……Shawn Stevenson!! Shawn Stevenson, a prior guest of our show, as well as his co-host Jade Harrell……these two have reached the number one spot on itunes with over four and a half million downloads Not only did my co-host Jason Legaard have the honor of introducing Shawn at his book signing and Q and A in Phoenix, AZ……we had the privilege of hangin with him afterwards with him and my girlfriend…..along with another dude whose story is  going to be shared on our podcast in the future! You see, when you begin to reach out and strive for higher ground, you need to not fear reaching out to those who are already where you want to be…..and Shawn is that person for Jason and myself. Not only that, but Shawn shared some insight with myself on conquering the road blocks that I've been facing in getting my book done…..on top of sharing some advice with my girlfriend about some of her fears and why she should take action. You see, the birthday girl, my girlfriend Jodi, myself, and Jason were able to learn, laugh, and enjoy a few hours of personally chillin with someone we admire. And in the process, we not only learned a few things about this guy who so many have come to love…..We have the option to take what he's freely given and either use it…..or toss it away! And when you are put in such a situation….someone like Shawn not only gave of himself freely, he did so from a place in which all of us should be doing! The question now lies before us…..what are we going to do with that advice? You may be in the position yourself where you've been given the keys to open several doors…..the question is are you going to start opening them up and walking through the doorways……or are you going to sit content in a room you've come to  know, yet are tired of  residing in? Time to listen in….. ~~Eddie Subscribe: Mindsetmtn.com/itunes Mindsetmtn.com/stitcher     The post Hangin With Shawn Stevenson…. appeared first on .
